The only thing I know about bikes is that they have two wheels and how to ride one. I called ahead and explained my situation then again when I got there. Looking for a consultation and guidance on possible maintenance for my brand new bike that's been collecting dust in storage for two years. The only guidance I got was to put 60 in my tires and get back in line. Fortunately the gracious customer behind me showed me how to put air in my tires and did a quick check to confirm the grease was right. He suggested I take it for a ride and bring it back if I hear any sounds. Extremely grateful for this customer and I rode away hoping I never have to come back again. I'm riding my bike and every time I start pedaling again there's a clicking sound that goes away when I start pedaling continuously. I decide to go back and same abrasive/dismissive man comes out and asks technical questions like I should be able to diagnose the problem. He tightens something and says he doesn't hear anything. I ask if the seat could be adjusted and he sends me to ride the bike and see if the clicking is gone or figure out where it's coming from. I rode away but this time I won't be coming back. Too bad my next visit was to try out a recumbent trike for my daughter. I can't imagine they would have the compassion or patience needed when purchasing an adaptive bike. read more

Doug, Come on... Nice attempt at recovery, but we took your advice and went elsewhere for our current and future biking needs. Frankly, I remember vividly the reprimand you gave me for bringing our $3000 tandem we purchased from you in for a tune-up unannounced. You told me to call ahead of time to schedule for such a big bike. And I have ever since. And I have been appreciative of you standing behind your work, as my initial review indicates. But wow! Yesterday I called in for service and felt far from appreciated by you as a loyal customer, especially hearing you in the background telling your employee on the phone with me to "have him go to another bike shop because you are too busy." That's a good problem to have; I guess... But really? I was calling in because my wife and I had just had our first crash. Not a bad one, but I knew the bike needed attention. So I called, like you trained me to do, to see if I could bring the bike to you. I could hear every word you spoke in the background to your employee while he was on the phone with me. You wanting me to diagnose what was wrong with the bike was insane. We crashed. I wanted to bring you the bike to have you diagnose what was wrong. You're the bike expert. Anyway, when you eventually got on the phone to ramble about how busy you are and it took a good while for you to breath and realize it was me on the other end of the phone with you (I'm guessing a pretty good customer??), and then to soften a bit, but still tell me it would take a good 10+ days to schedule the bike in for service... And then to still suggest I take our bike elsewhere... And then to answer me, after I confronted you and asked where you suggest we go... I'm guessing you recognized your piss-poor appreciation of us as good paying customers in your attempt of calling back 3-hours later and attempting to squeeze us in on Monday, 2-days after our crash. Too late, Doug. We took your advice and took our tandem to Mill Race in Geneva. They have a parking lot, unlike you. It seems I can bring our big tandem to them anytime; unannounced and all!! They have an automatic door that opens for me to easily bring our big bike in and out of their shop. And it seems like their tandem repair/tune-up pricing is more reasonable than yours. My wheels are spinning! And I'm not just talking about the ones in my head that never seem to stop. In the spring, we took our bikes in for a tune up.. misaligned brakes, slippery gears.. all around pain in the butt (not really, we have cushy seats) stuff. Not cheap, but competitive. We didn't go for the spit and polish clean and shine.. I can clean my own dang bike! They did a great job, it rides like new again. So when I wanted a bike rack for my Jeep, I went here. Yes, I might have got it a little cheaper elsewhere, but I like to support local business when I can.. and it was really helpful to be able to talk to someone about the different styles. I got good advice and walked out with the purchase that I was hoping to make. I casually asked about what he's recommending for a two year old (there is some gift buying in my very near future) he gave me a couple of ideas and also recommended that I go down the street and visit the most excellent Moore's Toy's and Gadgets. I brought my bike here because it is my LBS, and because when I came in to buy pricey accessories the staff was helpful. I brought it in for a tune up and to get my bottom bracket replaced, because the bearings on my old one were shot. Doug, the owner, got it done fairly quickly. I was able to grab it before the weekend, which was nice. I took my bike on its first ride, and it felt great for the first 10 miles. At the 10 mile mark, my crank arm started feeling more and more off kilter. I stopped and got off to check what was going on. The crank arm had not been tightened correctly causing my left crank arm and pedal to almost fall off. At this point I was about 4 miles from the house. I had to walk most of the way home. I finger tightened it enough to be able to do the downhill sections. I brought the bike back into the shop the next day. I showed it to Doug's polite assistant in the repair shop. He took a look at it and knew that it was not done correctly. I waited for Doug to come back from helping another customer. He took a look at my bike, but never at me. He took the pedal off the old crank arm, and replaced the crank arm and put it back on the bike. He handed me back my bike and said "here you go". He was even nice enough to leave the price tag on the new crank arm. I must have taken a different course on customer relations. A simple handshake and "I'm sorry, and your next tune up, next year, is on us." would have been more than enough. Due to Doug's awful customer service, I will never spend another dime at his place. I will take my bike to Spokes or whatever place I find that treats me like a human being. read more

This is another great bike shop near my house. It's located in downtown Wheaton, so you are forced to park on the street and if you have to bring a bike in for repair, you may have to walk with it for awhile. This place carries lots of high end stuff for all ages. I was looking for a bike trailer and they carry some that are as high as $500! For that price maybe I could get someone to attach it to their bike and do all the work! Another good feature about this location is that they rent out bikes here. So if you are in town for a day and want to visit the Prairie Path, you can rent here and enjoy the scenery! read more

I had to get a bike disassembled and packed up for shipping, I called around and asked for estimates and this shop was extremely reasonable. Not only did they have a great rate but the job was only a 24 hour turn around (the norm being 2 business days at least). I picked up my bike and they had wrapped the frame in foam and packed it securely in a box that was even the brand of the bike! It's well-stocked with a good selection of Cannondale, Fuji and other brands plus a huge range of accessories but the best part is owner Doug's knowledge and friendly willingness to tune-up or fix your bike on the spot if possible. Doug is a cyclist himself, is great at recommending products that are well-suited to your age, build, and riding ability and style. This is a pretty solid bike store in downtown Wheaton. They have a decent selection of bikes, ranging from single speed commuter bikes to race bikes to off-road. They have decent helmets, water bottles, lights, and other stuff. The staff are friendly, but didn't go out of their way to help. However, when I did have a specific question about a bike, they were very knowledgeable. I bought a bike here when I was about 13 years old, and now, 17 years later, I am finally riding it again after a check-up in their maintenance department. The bike is still running strong (though it did have several years in between of relaxing in the basement of my mom's house). Being right across the tracks from the Prairie Path is great too, because you can stop by if you need something along your ride. Parking is also pretty easy in this stretch of street. read more

We were looking for a bike for my adult disabled brother and they were so helpful in the test ride. However the bike was just a little too big for him. Recently, the air hose blew off an air pump I had purchased from Doug; I took it in, fearing I would have to buy a new pump. Doug fixed it for me on the spot, charging me nothing. While I did not buy my bicycle from Midwest, I have bought the pump, a new seat, a rack for my van, several inner tubes - removed and replaced by Doug or other staff member; they have been prompt, courteous, friendly, and always willing to explain stuff. I frequent Midwest Cyclery, and I have been going there for bike supplies since the late 80s. They are always very helpful. I came in at about 5:30 (1/2 hour to closing) last night with a problem with my rear wheel. Doug talked with me briefly and gave me a few pointers as well as enough of a patch fix so that I could ride my 18 miles home. He also gave me a few spoke heads to fix my problem at home. I made it home and was able to fix my spoke, true my wheel, and ride in again this morning. I am very grateful for Doug's help. He has always been very kind and helpful. read more

Worst customer service. My husband bought me a bike as a surprise. It's a nice bike but it's not as fast as I'd like and I can't keep up with my husband's bike. I rode it once and went to return it because there's no point in riding with my husband if he's a mile in front of me or he has to pedal in slow motion to stay with me. They built it for her and held it for me until her birthday. These guys are seriously the nicest, kindest, most attentive, and knowledgeable guys I've met trying to buy a bike. After another bike shop told me it would be a week before my bike was fixed, I decided to give these guys a call. They told me that if I brought my bike in that day, they could fix it in 45 minutes. I dropped it off and wandered around the Wheaton French market and came back in less than 45 minutes and it was ready for me. I have been a faithful customer for years. I always thought the store was a little expensive. At first I thought that was because the store is in Wheaton. A month ago I visited the store with a flat tire issue on the back wheel. Immedatly he noticed that the glass on my review mirror was cracked. Without delay, without asking me he spoke out by saying, "I can change to mirror for you"! When I arrived to the back of the store by the repair area he went to work on the back wheel. I pulled a repaired inner tube to use on the bike. Like a shot he ran off to get a new inner tube without asking. In disbelief I watched him put the new inner tube on the bike. In the process he (Doug) pulled the protective strip off the wheel and said that this can fail. Without asking me he pulled off the strip and replaced it with a more expensive strip. I've been in the retail business for 40 years. I watched, in disbelief, him (Doug) "up-selling" me without a question of what I wanted. The young man behind the repair desk watch with a smile as Doug continued his actions to the young man how to sell a customer. I entered the store thinking that I was a valued customer. I left the store knowing the Doug's approach to a customer is without respect to a customers needs but rather to the bottom line needs of the store. I WILL NEVER GO IN MIDWEST CYCLERY AGAIN. THE OWER HAS NO RESPECT OR CONCERN FOR HIS CUSTOMER. IT IS A COLD AND INSULTING EXPERIENCE. HE MIGHT SHOW YOU A SMILING FACE BUT BE VERY CAREFUL IN DOING BUSINESS WITH HIM.
