After many recommendations, we finally made it to Spinning Bones in Alameda! We didn't have a reservation, but arrived around 5p for dinner on a Saturday and were seated immediately with a beautiful table. We ordered the Corn Fritters (they come with a delicious side of jam, highly recommend), the Smashed Potatoes (topped with a cheese fondue, chives, and sour cream), and the Chicken Salad (made with fresh pulled chicken straight from their rotisserie). There's a wide variety of other delicious starters to choose from, but loved the mashup of sweet and savory here! The corn fritters were so crispy and light, the smashed potatoes became an instant classic & were so comforting, the salad light and aromatic. We moved onto the Bones Burger (served with thousand island, shredded lettuce, pickled red onions, American cheese, and not one but two patties) for $15. I love a thick, juicy burger for a great value..and the American cheese was a nice surprise. I can honestly say the burger held up to the hype - I would come back for it! We didn't have room for any entrees this go-around, but to note they serve slow roasted meat platters including pork shoulder, ribs, beef, sausages, and more. There is a kiddo menu & beer/wine/sake and non-alcoholic bevvies too. The dessert menu is also a must for when we return ~ butter mochi...sign me up! We love coming here, but it seems like there's only one server every night and it makes things pretty slow. I feel bad for the server and it seems like they need more help. Was so excited to try this place and am sad to say it was a bit of a disappointment. Not sure if it was because I had high expectations but I just found the food to be okay. We got corn fritters a tsukune burger and 3 little pigs. Corn fritters were hot and flavorful and well fried, but not sure that the jam added anything to it - favorite item of the meal though! 3 Little Pigs platter was good and you could tell the quality of the meat was there, but again, the sauces (and pickles) were kind of meh. The best thing on that plate was the salad and I'm not saying that as a joke...the salad is actually really, really good! Biggest let down was the tsukune burger. Patties had a strong umami flavor to the point that it overpowered everything. There wasn't enough contrast in texture or flavor and we ended up leaving almost half a burger behind. Tonight we tried again and after waiting for 10 minutes to be acknowledged were told that they were down a chef and they could not seat us (2 persons). The attendant was basically rude. If ever a Half Star was appropriate, this is the time. Cant give this place a 4 star, but it was closer to a 5 star. A true 4.5 Star experience for my wife and I during our 1st visit. Service was excellent as they were prepping for the dinner service. It was clean, quiet and food came out quickly. We were ordered the Rotisserie Cauliflower starter that had great flavor and was cooked very well. Tender and a lot of umami flavor. We shared the Green Goddess salad and based on the recommendation of our server, we got to taste a bit of everything with the Trips Triple. It was perfect. The Shoulder to me was the star of the platter along with the Garum that to be honest. The tri-tip with the Chimichurri, equally yummy and the chicken, so moist and crispy on the skin, was great with both sauces. The salad was great also. Not too sauced, and very fresh. Came by for dinner the other night and it was an excellent experience! Made a reservation via OpenTable and our table was ready upon arrival. Dining is available in the heated outdoor parklet or indoors in the dining room with an open kitchen. Spinning Bones appears to be on the end of the busy main strip of the otherwise sleepy Alameda. Started off with the corn fritters which were tasty. The corn fritters consisted of cornbread along with a few pieces of fried corn. This was lightly fried and the flavor was on point. The dipping sauce was perfect. Moved on to the spam rice special and it was excellent. The spam was homemade and was served over a bed of rice and seaweed. This was topped with some fried egg. Portions were gigantic! The prime rib Sunday special was another excellent entree. The prime rib was extremely tender prepared to a perfect medium rare. The crust was well salted and had a crisp to it. The au jus was also excellent and flavorful. THe side of creamed spinach complemented this entree nicely. They had outdoor seating available and it was a nice day too. But the guy said they didn't have seating for us outside. I pointed to an empty table outside in the corner. The guy said "sorry, you're only 3 and that's a table for 4." Lololol. what?? That seemed ridiculous to me. There was no one sitting there and it wasn't reserved. What was the big deal? We sat inside and flies were buzzing around our table. We were ignored for a bit, longer than normal and had to ask for water. I got a salad with chicken. The chicken was shredded and incredibly bland. The dressing was the only part with flavor in my salad. We were not checked on during our meal. My hibiscus soda was good. Got take out at 6p. They were not busy. The guy at the front of the store was rude. First he ignored me, the only person standing at the front of the restaurant. Then when the food was ready for pick up, he rudely said," you never gave me your name." Dude you didn't give me a chance to say anything. The food was mediocre. I just called and spoke with someone at the restaurant before booking a reservation, and I am glad I did: There is not a dedicated gluten free fryer. This means that the corn fritters are NOT gf and WILL sicken people with Celiac disease or severe gluten sensitivity. I took a star off bc the person who answered the phone did not say hello, tell me thief name, or say goodbye, but did have an immediate response to my question. I did not ask follow-up questions about their other contamination protocols, but I would assume that they're low-to-no, given the fryer situation. The name of the restaurant was compelling enough for us to try it out. Luckily, we got there more than an hour before they close. It's good that they're open till 8 o'clock on Sunday. My friend saw the fried egg on the link I sent him and he was really curious. For the dinner menu only one entrée has a fried egg on top: Tsukuba sando. It must be a popular item because we saw several orders go out before we even got our order taken. Service was very good and prompt. The interior is really comfy, colorful, and a good environment to dine in. Plenty of wishbones scattered all over the place in jars! We ordered the three little pigs that come with sliced pork shoulder, barbecued ribs, and a pork sausage with a side salad. It also came with barbecue sauce and a green spicy jalapeño sauce. We also ordered the green goddess salad and the corn fritters. Both of us got the ginger and soda for drinks except that my friend wanted lemonade in his as a half-and-half. He was granted his wish! Our server was the best. The corn fritters are like little balls of fried dough with corn inside. They remind me of the southern hush puppies. The menu seem like a mishmash of a variety of cultures. Definitely an Asian hint to it, as well as a southern touch. The green goddess salad was excellent with a very light goddess dressing, and the tomatoes were unusual colors. Our three little pigs that came were on a tray of which 2/3 of the tray where the entrée meats, and the rest was a salad and the two sauces. Have been here multiple times for lunch and the food is pretty consistent and a good blend of American food with some Asian flare. Service can be a bit slower during peak times. Love coming here for the appetizers, more than the entrees itself. The corn fritters are fresh and the strawberry jam is a great pairing with it. The beet salad and chicken salad are flavorful and a good portion. The mochiko chicken with the aioli sauce is delightful. If you like pate, they do it well here with the crostini! The fries are so good here - if you come here, please try them. Shishito peppers & Brussel sprouts are standard, hard to go wrong with them. Epic meal! From start to finish was really good. For starters we had the cauliflower (10/10) absolute FIRE! Probably one of the most amazing things I have eaten this year. The corn fritters (8/10) overall really well seasoned and cooked through. Entrees We got the chicken sando Tsukune sando and the salmon salad. Chicken sando was amazing perfectly crispy and juicy but not a mess to eat super good 10/10. Tsukune sandwich was a HIT! Patty was juicy and seasoned very well and the sauce they use on the bun was amazing as well - throwing the fried egg set it over the top overall was just spectacular. Potato salad was great it had cucumber slices and edamame in it which made it very unique but also refreshing almost? Not sure how to explain it. Salmon salad had tons of salmon and a GANG of cheese. I do not recall when we saw this restaurant on a local tv show but I immediately bookmarked it for future reference. Fast forward to tonight when my husband asked the dreaded question "what should we do for dinner tonight?" Fast forward to our Lyft ride home as I write this review. I have been following this place on IG and remembered it was still on the list. I was able to get an evening reservation and we arrived to super friendly staff that sat us and got us on our way to an amazing meal. What we had was all from the regular menu. Specials sounded awesome and we can't wait to go back. We had: 1) corn fritters: crispy on the outside, soft on the inside and a yummy jam to dip. 2) Napa slaw: a little bit of crunch and a whole lot of flavor. 3) Double Dutch: ribs, chicken, salad and roti. chimichuri and bbq sauce on the side. Warning- the jalapeños are spicy! Everything has such great flavor and we enjoyed every bite. We skipped the beverages and had water but I loved that all of the drinks were very reasonably priced. The black pepper beef is pretty good, but the pork shoulder is so tender and flavorful. Chicken isn't great doordashed. I wouldn't doordash the chicken. It gets too dry. Corn fritters are pretty kewl. Comes with. A strawberry jam. Ribs were pretty good. Beet salad is pretty good. Smashed potatoes are a must. Pork shoulder is great. Have a reservation, but there was plenty of available seating in the front and back of the restaurant. What I loved about this restaurant was that it is family friendly lots of little kids toddlers babies eating at this place. It's good for small groups. I do love the laid-back style of this place. It felt very welcoming. The server and the kitchen staff were all very nice and it didn't feel pressured to buy extra. The price of the food is a little bit expensive but what do you expect from a Michelin star restaurant? I agree with the prices. The food themselves was fantastic. Very well seasoned , chicken was moist, super Flavorful potatoe salad. The hash meat was tender, fried egg runny and potatoes were crispy and soft on the inside. We actually could share the two plates between two people. We didn't try the kids meals, but there definitely was a bunch on the kids menu that looked good even as an adult! Recently me & a few friends I had lunch here and we are certain that we won't be coming back. We all ordered entrees that had pork, beef & chicken. I ordered Trip's Tripple: chicken, pork shoulder, tri tip, my friends ordered 3 Little Pig & Black Pepper Beef. I only wanted brown chicken meat and already informed the server if I can't get all the chicken brown meat please let me know so that I could change my order. The server did not let me know and just brought the order which has one piece of white meat and one piece of brown meat I was very disappointed thinking: Did you listen to my request ??!! Or you just did not care to let me know ahead of time so that I could change my order ? All of the meat (chicken, pork & beef) that we ordered tasted really bland, unappetizing, and the texture was very poor and not fresh at all. The chimicurri sauce was very oily as well. Surprisingly the server did not bring us any barbecue sauce at all having that we all ordered that BBQ pork & beef The server told us that their signature dish is corn fritters, so we ordered it. I was very surprised how the corn fritters became a signature dish? The corn fritters were made with a lot of flour and with very little corn! The sauce did not taste good either! Went for my birthday dinner on a weeknight and it was easy to get a table. The service was fine but wouldn't say it was super friendly or engaging just very polite and efficient. The food was well prepared and the flavors were great, I think it would've worked better for us to come with a larger group so we could try more of the smaller plates. It was hard to choose variety for just 2. My favorite dish was the 3 little pigs - everything was tender and flavorful. The chicken fat rice did feel a bit heavy and with the meat we ordered I think I would've preferred a more neutral salad or veggies. I'd try it again but take more friends ! read more

Hands down the BEST gluten free sando I've had. This is going to be my staple sando place from now on - PLEASE keep the gluten free option available. You got the best gluten free waffle (bun replacement) option going. The waffle has some fluff to it while also savory. It was a good match to the pork chicken patties. The fried chicken sando (spicy) was good as well. I tried a small piece of the chicken (this is not gluten free). It wasn't spicy but has a mild kick to it. It was a good servicing size with two pieces of fried boneless chicken. Service was fabulous. The server made sure to check on all allergy since I asked for gluten free. They are very considerate and definitely a place to go for any allergy conscious diners. Corn fritters: Staple appetizer with real corn kernels incorporated inside! Served with strawberry jam, it truly is next level Pork Shoulder: Served with garlic-jalapeno garum and pickled jalapenos, I was worried this would be too spicy for me but it was perfectly balanced. The meat itself isn't spicy but the sauce on the side has a kick, so you can add as much or as little heat as you want. Koji Chicken: Interesting and delicious take on fusion Japanese rotisserie. I was able to make a reservation easily on Opentable. Located on Park St with 10-ish tables Parklet outside, the restaurant is cute and evokes a feeling of a Hawaiian mom-and-pop place. Rotisserie chicken and meat were being roasted behind the counter. Chef was very focused on his work. Customers seemed to be mostly local. They knew the place, and they appeared to be familiar with the menu. We ordered, Corn fritter served with strawberry jam. It is sweet and crunchy and is a nice snack. Although the coating could be a little airier and lighter. Tsukune lunch plate ( loco moco up a notch): one ground pork, one ground chicken patty with hapa sauce, and a fried egg served with rice. It was very flavorful and juicy. 1/2 Koji chicken rotisserie with salad and roti: the salad was very refreshing and tasty. The red meat part of the chicken was incredibly tender, juicy, and full of umami flavor. I loved it. I would order it every visit. I even licked bone :). The chicken breast part however was dry and bland. I wished there was a little roasting juice dripped over the chicken breast to compensate for it. But there was none. The roti was unfortunately burned during reheating. Drinks: I loved the fact that they have house wine on tap. House wine is very popular in Europe. The wines are chosen such that they would work with most of their dishes. It saves customer time and effort. They are usually also cheaper. In this case, their house wines were Pinot Noir and Sauvignon Blanc which worked perfectly with our dishes. The service was not quite up to par. There was a lack of attention to customers. Our server appeared to be a little clueless or forgetful, with small glitches here and there. The menu was not explained. Dishes were brought to the table without a word. We understand the difficulty restaurants face now after the pandemic. So we still showed our appreciation for the server's effort. Found one kitty corner from the restaurant in front of a laundromat. With it being closed Monday and Tuesday, we celebrated my birthday on Wednesday instead! This one-star Michelin restaurant takes reservations with seating options indoors and outdoors (heated parklet). I love how nicely they decorated their parklet. CORN FRITTERS - $12 Sweet yellow corn, egg, rice flour, apricot jam. This was not as good as it was hyped out to be. I was hoping for more of a corn bread texture but this was prepared with rice flour with kernels of yellow corn. The apricot jam was not a fit for me. I was hoping for like honey butter. What do I know except the old fashioned cornbread kind of appetizers. It was my bad for having the wrong kind of expectations. SMASHED POTATOES - $12 Romesco sauce, sour cream, chives. Not as pas fried as I had hoped. It was more like potato o'briends but of small round potatoes. I wanted more sour cream and chives. I honestly could have just asked for more. This bad boy was hefty and should (and was) be shared. We had it spicy since it's just milk which is manageable. The chicken itself was yummy and I asked for more sauce. It was good! BIRTHDAY BROWNIE Although a birthday treat was brought out for me, which was super sweet, I couldn't enjoy it. The brownie was hard and cold, topped with condensed milk, whipped cream, blackberries and sprinkles. Lovely! But darn that brownie was so hard that's why they couldn't stick a candle in it (I knocked over and I held it for photo opp, haha). I should have taken it home and nuked it. So we ordered dessert! BUTTER MOCHI - $9 Coconut Mochi Cake, Caramel Pineapple, Whip. Oh man this was SO good! The huge scoop of whipped cream was nice--I thought it was ice cream at first. We sat outside in the covered parklet and people watched. Our server who was working very hard (obviously she was quite warm as well) was attentive but lapsed on a few minor details. Sunday night prime rib -- so good and no need to wait months for reservations. This place is really cool because they have daily/weekly specials, while supplies last. They bring a lot of creativity in that way. The prime rib is luckily a daily special that stuck around as a Sunday special. It was satisfying and came with horseradish cream sauce and creamed spinach. The other daily specials were the killer bone marrow over bean stew, lumpia with lettuce cups, and yakisoba. I would definitely get the bone marrow again if we come across it. The recurring dishes were the fried mochiko chicken (a favorite), the goodie sampler, and the chips and dip. Yet another return to a neighborhood favorite and Michelin Guide Bib Gourmand list inductee, Spinning Bones. Again we feasted on the appetizers part of the menu. The Chicken Lickin' is still superb; check my previous review for more. The Kennebec potato chips with pickle yogurt sauce is yet another flavor bomb, immensely satisfying. The black vinegar edamame with bacon was amazing, and not for the reasons I expected. Such the spices off the pod, pop the beans into your mouth, add a bit of bacon, and chew. Those 3, combined, brought me right back to Sichuan province in China. The schmaltz rice with crispy chicken skin and green onions felt like a work in progress; unperfected. The interplay of textures is there but it felt underseasoned and missing soy sauce (for vegetarians) or Portuguese Linguica sausage (for omnivores). I visited here yesterday just for the salad with green goddess dressing the dressing was spot on followed up with banana pudding to and one of the best coffees I've experienced I ate outside and the service timing was impeccable I highly recommend Spinning Bones I was pleasantly surprised read more

It was just OK. Most likely not returning. I met friends for lunch this past Sunday (1/5/25). Spinning Bones is cute and comfortable. Don't you hate it when restaurants have uncomfortable tables and/or chairs? I do! We made reservations for 4. We shared the brussel sprouts, cauliflower and corn fritters. All were delicious! I had the sparkling water with POG (pineapple, oj and guava) , which I enjoyed. I ordered one of the specials - a breakfast burrito. The fried chicken sando was the first to arrive at the table. Next to arrive was the tsukune sando - after about 10-15 minutes. Then, about 25 minutes after the first entree arrived, the St. Louis Pork Ribs arrived. Finally, 45 minutes after the first dish was served to our table, I got my burrito. As a burrito - moreso a breakfast burrito - enthusiast, it was not a good burrito. It would have been fine had it not been for the yellow American cheese. That was not even melty. In conclusion, I will not be returning, unless I happen to be in Alameda and there is no where else to eat on the island because the wait for our food really killed our buzz from the drinks and yummy appetizers. I ate here during a early dinner reservation on Valentine's Day. I'm vegan and was underwhelmed by the limited options, even most of the salads and appetizers have meat and/or dairy. I got their veggie burger, I love a house made veggie patty, and this was ok. The texture and consistency was great plus it was cooked well, but very under seasoned. I was dining with someone who eats meat and dairy, and they commented their chicken was also under seasoned and bland. The fries I ordered with the burger came out last and I couldn't eat more then a pinch because they were so salty it made my mouth hurt. I think the ketchup that was served with the fries was store bought versus fresh made. The service, however, was immaculate and could not have been better! Both my friend and I are disabled and they were very accommodating despite us being late for our reservation. Our server also waited to approach us until we had her masks back on while dining outside, and we both super appreciated that consideration and thoughtfulness. Upon reading some of the other positive reviews, I noticed that they were all in regards to their meat dishes. Maybe we caught them on an off night, or maybe they're just better at preparing their meaty options. read more
