I started going to Spinning Bones during COVID when they converted an empty lot across the street into an outdoor dining space. It was great. Everything I ordered during that time was delicious. Fast forward to this year. I have been there twice. Tried the prime rib as I had heard it was great. Mine didn't have a lot of flavor. Feeling like I needed to give it another chance, last night I ordered the junior cheeseburger to pick up. Pickup time was 6:55. I arrived about 6:57 and took my order home. The burger was cold, the cheese wasn't melted and there was just too much bun. I've had a better burger at 5 Guys. Ordered: Special items: Salmon toast - Yummmmm....underneath their perfectly cured salmon (perfect salt ratio curing) was a layer of egg salad on a buttery, thick & soft brioche toast. On their IG it had ikura but mine had none instead of tobiko. I was disappointed even though it was delish. Hence, minus one star. Chips & dip - Yummmmmmmm..... with the right amount of salt, creaminess, and the crunch from the chip! I love my olives tapenade + hummus + soft cheese = LOVE!! ....soooooo in love with this dip!! Salivating thinking about it. Usual suspects: Trip's triple: Love the spicy kick of the garlic- jalapeno garum sauce more than the chimichurri. Came on a Sunday after hearing so much about the place. It's expensive-ish so we figured this was a treat. Ordered chicken and flank steak. Both were cold, steak was over cooked. But the mystifying thing was the seasonings - not only did the mains have no seasoning but the condiments made no sense - picked onions, weird chimichurri on things with Asian ish flavorings, pickled jalapeños - all good on their own but nothing here went together from a flavor profile. It was like overpriced cafeteria quality food dressed up with things that look pretty on Instagram but taste downright bad together. And I love fusion food, but this was sooo bad. With Bane Mae Vane and Fikscue and Ceron in Alameda why does this place do so well? It's so bad. Maybe the chef was phoning it in but these are the recipes and they just aren't good. Was looking for a SIP outdoor dining spot with great food & ample space- this came up on Yelp & decided w my bestie to check it out. Parking & seating was easy, Food was SO Delicious- definitely will return for more. Corn fritters were a treat, really didn't need the sauce it came with. Trips triple was excellent- every bit from salad greens to pork to roast chicken to beef & chimichurri & jalapeño totally on point. I could probably use 10x the amount of chimichurri came with but also tasted great w out sauce. Service was efficient, drink selection was really fun & good selection ( too bad I can't day drink no more ) clean ports potties & wash station, awning over most of the tables & some in full sun if you prefer that. Everything about this dining experience was fantastic. The beet salad Was fantastic. The portion was perfect, and the dressing was excellent. The skirt steak was absolutely perfect. It was cooked to perfection, and could not have been more tender. The coleslaw that comes on the side was shocked and amazed. Normally I don't like these sort of random pickled slaw side dishes. But this was good enough to actually be a little meal in itself. I ordered the fries extra crispy, and they were. Service was fast, and the dining area could not be more covid-19 safe. Picnic tables are all covered with adhesive contact paper to make for better cleaning. And just when I didn't think it could get any better, the food is served in compostable cardboard like containers with what looks like a plastic lid. But guess what, the plastic lid is also compostable. End of the utensils were real metal. This restaurant is set up in the parking lot of the old Big o tires. they're brick and mortar store is across the street, but obviously closed for covid-19. I certainly hope they work out a 100-percent canopy solution for the rainy season. Because I will definitely be back here, and you two should give it a shot. read more

I had been working in Alameda recently and I ordered take out for Lunch. I saw this place driving by and decided to try it out. I had ordered a Cheeseburger and fries. I had also bought a soda and water. It was completely empty but lunch had just started and I was early. It was a pretty quick wait and the food was ready In under 15 minutes. The Burger was quite good and it was a double patty. Fries were also good and I loved the 1000 special sauce that came with the Burger. The burger reminded me of the Bob's Big Boy special for some nostalgic reason. I will go back again and try the place, , but maybe for Wings or Bbq Brisket. It's kinda difficult to write a fair review for this place since everything is so crazy right now in general. They are on the right track though. The menu is interesting and the food is good. We had the roti with pork and beef respectively. Very nice flavors. The fries were bland and greasy though. And I am all for helping local eateries, but man, those portions were small. And the price with almost $50 for two people (tip included) too high, if I get up from the table hungry :-/ The staff was not very friendly, but very on top of disinfecting and generally keeping the guests and themselves safe. That's a big plus in my book! The eating area is meh. Usually a parking lot, now with a fence around it. If you are not careful about selecting your table, you will have the smell of garbage or the porta-potty in your nose during your meal. No bueno. I like their cute picnic tables and the guidelines for staying safe. So yeah, a bit of a mixed bag. I will definitely come back and try more of their food and maybe even pick up something. Pate- nothing special. Party rice - bland. I actually used some of the seasoning from the cauliflower to add flavor to the rice Butter mochi - liked the mochi texture, fun to eat. However wasn't amazing wouldn't order again Rotisserie cauliflower - seasoned well. I'm not sure if this is supposed to be crispy or not since my order was take out. It would be tastier if it was. Trip's Triple - chicken was dry. Didn't really care for the pork, nothing special or memorable. LOVED THE flank steak, cooked well, tender, and flavorful. Loved the chimichurri and garum sauces the Triple came with. Wasn't a fan of the pickled onions. I LOVE LOVE LOVE all things pickled. The food, service, ambiance and cocktails were all great. What we shared: Cauliflower: chili oil, fried shallots $7 Blistered shishitos: umami salt, lemon aioli $8 Trip's Triple: 1/4 chicken, pork shoulder, flank steak, chimichurri, garlic jalepeno garum $27 The sides were solid and well seasoned but my favorite was the Trip's Triple. I loved the assortment of meat and it was all well seasoned, juicy and tender. I can't remember which cocktails my coworkers ordered but I had a nice clean and dry sake that came in a fancy glass and it was refreshing. Let's talk food first - DELICIOUS! We ordered a starter, two plates, and drinks. The portions were on the smaller side, but we definitely licked the compostable plates clean and will be back to try other things on the menu. The wait was standard, and we got our drinks first then all of our food arrived at one time. Signage, great! QR code for menu, check. Multiple posters of menu, check. Masks, check. Gloves, check. Hand sanitizer, check. Washing station, check (though instead of an actual sink, a water cooler is used and there were a couple of porta potties in the corner of the yard -not my favorite). The spacing in the yard was great and complied with the 6 feet distance requirements. There were tables for smaller groups and picnic tables for bigger groups. I'll just add that our original table didn't seem 100% clean, so I pulled out my Clorox wipes. It seemed like there was food or bird poop caked on a corner of the table. Gross! But other tables were clean so hopefully that was an isolated incident. We will give them the benefit of the doubt of having to make the best of what already existed. Other than my personal preference for bathrooms, especially when I'm eating, they did a great job. All in all, we loved the food and the overall concept of having outside seating. We'll be back for more and will definitely be back when we can sit inside. read more

Spinning Bones = rotisserie'd meats are a focus to their menu. And that is what pulled me here to The Meda. Quite hipster, place was packed with all types from young to old, but mostly young techie types. The space itself is actually pretty plain, outside of the open kitchen. They are new, so maybe they will evolve it eventually. But the food is so much more impressive than the atmosphere. And the pricing and the portioning is so on point, that I could totally be a regular here. I found eating family style here is the way to go. Pate ($12/4*) A smooth yet mild chicken liver pate sits cute in a tiny hipster glass jar. Served with crostinis, pickles and a ton of a sweet fig preserves. I actually don't know why they dished out that much fig jam, as you only need a dot of it for each crostini. So I brought it home to use for other applications, so score. My only knock for the dish is the pate was really cold and was hard to spread. Kinda like butter, I just prefer it to be softer/warmer so it is more spreadable. Trip's Triple ($27/4.5*) This is their sampler platter from the rotisserie. I'll break down the components. Chicken (4*) Super juicy and flavorful without being salty. Gotta give em props on that. Way more natural than any commercial roast chickens out there. They give 3 nice sized pieces. This was enhanced with a few dots of their chimichurri, which was boldly garlic-y and herbaceous. Pork Shoulder (5*) This was slice-able pork shoulder versus the pull apart kind. Nice and tender with a perfect chew, just the way I prefer my rotisserie'd meats. Again seasoned just right, that I could of eaten it as is, but a light spread of their jalapeno garum just added another level of spicy umami that complemented it wonderfully. Flank Steak (5*) I love places that serve these non-mainstream cuts of beef. Skirt, Flat Iron and Hanger Steaks are the others. Since this is a thinner cut the salt/seasoning came through more, but still not "salty". Cooked to medium which was fine as it still retained a good chew while never coming off as dry. I ate this one as is, as the beef flavor from the flank is about as perfect as it gets. Green Beans ($6/3*) Perfectly al dente chilled green beans. But the crushed tofu and edamame that dress it, add nothing for flavor. It came off as bland. But with everything else being so flavorful, I suppose it could be used as a counter bite. But a sprinkling of seasoning or acid could definitely benefit this dish. Crab Fried Rice ($20/5*) On special. Not really the intensely flavored wok style, but more of a very moist and rich rice dish. Awesome hunks of true Dungeness just stamped the validity. Something rich and creamy in there as well, which I really could not pick out, almost like hits of a creamy aioli. Shreds of nori finishes and adds another pop. So glad this was available on our visit. Service super friendly. My only knock was how close everything came out to our table. Within 2 bites of our appetizer, everything also arrived. Thank goodness we were at a 4 top and not a 2 top, otherwise things would not have fit and would had to get sent back to the kitchen. So just knocks on their timing. We brought a bottle of wine, so we didn't get to try any of their drinks. I saw wine being poured from bottles and the taps from the back. I ordered a drink to start with they don't have a full bar so it's that fake vodka stuff so you would hope the cost would be a little less not the case :-( They food was unique and interesting combinations all were phenomenal. Having walked by several times and noticed that Spinning Bones was always full of customers. Then after reading Cheryl M's review, I knew I had to give it a try. We came here with friends on Friday with 5:45pm reservations. The main dining room, which looks into the open kitchen has about a dozen tables. There about eight tables in a back dining area. We were seated at the window table that looks into Park St. Our friendly server, Shawn, welcomed us. He filled our water glasses as we checked out the menu and ordered drinks. We perused the menu and we knew we had to order the roasted meats as they were Spinning Bones specialty as a rotisserie restaurant. Our orders: Trip's Triple - a sampler consisting of ¼ Koji chicken (half a breast and a drumstick), pork shoulder and flank steak with a chimichurri and garlic-jalapeno dipping sauces and a side of mixed greens. All three meats were so tender, flavorful and moist. I liked the chimichurri as the garlic-jalapeno sauce had a kick to it. Koji Chicken - half a chicken with a side of tossed greens and roti. Friend complemented about how moist it was the large portion. St. Louis Ribs - has a yellow curry salt coating accompanied by SB BBQ sauce and Japanese potato salad. Tried a rib and it was tasty and the meat fell off the bone. Roti Ramen - this was a Restaurant Week special. Three slice of char siu pork with the egg noodles in a roasted chicken and pork broth and a nicely cooked. The broth was nice and hot, but it was on the salty side. Having tried many ramens, this one didn't meet my expectations. For dessert, we shared two orders of the Butter Mochi. Each order had three pieces of coconut mochi with a dollop of coco whip cream and slices strawberries. We agreed this was one of the best mochis we tried. Slight chewy texture with a nice coconut taste and it was not overly sweet. So happy to have finally tried Spinning Bones. Returned here for the 2nd year to celebrate my birthday. Food was spot on fantastic, fresh, delicious, & perfectly prepared. However, we found some aspects disappointing this year. 1st, $17.00 for a cold appetizer made of 2 oz ball of fresh cheese, 1/4 of a peach, & some arugula is highway robbery! A seasoned server would have listed the prices of the daily specials along with the descriptions; but it's on us for not thinking to ask! Nearly fell outta my chair when I saw that on the bill!! Lesson learned! Do yourself the favor of saving your $$ & skipping this item! 2nd, While their kitchen used to be far more flexible with dietary-driven changes & substitutions, this time was far harder to get the same. Only when realizing the potential loss of a $40 sale did they find a way to change out a veggie option for a different veggie option! I mean... really?!?! I know supplies are tight, but is it REALLY all that hard to sub out broccalinni for arugula?!?! Anyway... And 3rd, while here for a past birthday dinner and offered a complimentary dessert item of choice, no such offer was mentioned this time. True, they were sold out of the best dessert item they have (banana pudding), but they could have offered another item instead. This IS why we go out to celebrate special occasions, for the moments of "making a big deal" outta events; ESPECIALLY when we've been unable to do so with big groups for now the *3rd* year running! And for an $80.00 meal you'd think a birthday dessert would be a given! Oh well.... We'll probably go back eventually because we like the food. I have been wanting to try the food in this restaurant for so long since they opened last 6 months! Now that I have tried it I want to go back again. We had lunch here today Sunday and had a great time. The food was delicious and the service was fantastic. I highly recommend chicken salad, the ingredients were very fresh and put together perfectly that they complemented each other. My boyfriend had Pork Poutine, He loved it. He said it's really delicious, authentic and unique seasoning. The sauce is not heavy at all, basically it gives you a very good combination of flavor. The owner was very personable; he came out to greet his customers one by one and chatted a little. All of these made us feel welcome here at Spinning Bones. Quiet on a Wednesday evening. Seating indoors and out. Unobtrusive Warriors game on a small corner TV and excellent alt-rock music playing loudishly, but not overwhelming. Went for a burger after reading that they served the best one on The Island. Instead, I tried a pulled-pork burger SPECIAL with a medley of pickled accoutrements, shredded cabbage, dried onions, & BBQ sauce on a grilled brioche served with a side of delicious rustic potato salad and was blown away! Not totally sure if I got all the ingredients right... Washed it down with a beer from the modest selection on tap. Tasty! read more

I usually keep up with new businesses on Park but this place came up as a pleasant surprise to me! This is a really solid rotisserie spot that may potentially usurp Papaito Rotisserie in San Leandro as my go-to from now on. I loved the entire concept of the restaurant - it seems like there is some Japanese influence infused into the food and everything was thoughtfully made. I tried the Trips Trio, and while I thought the chicken was probably the best of the three, the pork shoulder was super tender and tasty which made it a close second! The beet salad was a great side to the meat, and I happily munched on the complimentary popcorn. A nice addition to Park Street that is hopefully here to stay! Absolutely amazing. Came here for brunch and I have no complaints whatsoever. The ingredients are clearly fresh. The food did not feel heavy at all. The waitstaff had a clear eye on every table and knows how to read the mood of the tables. Need another drink? already there! Ready to box up? Offered to do it before asked! They wasted no time making sure it was a delightful experience. The thing that Spinning Bones does far better than others is provide ample sauce for their appetizers. So many other places I've been to I would have to sheepishly ask for another dish of sauce. (These dishes taste amazing without the sauce!). Just couldn't get enough of their sauces. I highly recommend the chicken karaage. There is a subtle hint of just the right amount of lemon juice in each bite, while maintaining its crisp. Other places give you a slice of lemon for you to do it yourself, but let's be real, we're not chef's - most of the time, we just drench the top couple pieces and ruin them. Come check this place out before word gets out or you'll have to wait out through the crowds. read more

Apparently I misread the description which they had prior to opening. I had planned for takeout, and now know they have full dinner table service. I had the mochiko fried chicken nuggets and the black pepper beef. While the beef was tender, I think perhaps they may have given me the wrong accompanying sauce. I had never seen a chimchurri sauce that was creamy, and it doesn't match other photos. While maybe a tad on the pricey side for Alameda, it is a nice addition. Butter Mochi Reasons of approval: - Beef in Trips Triple goes incredibly well with the spicy sauce (garlic jalapeno garum). Match-made in heaven I can't say the same with the other meat and sauce combos... - That garlic jalapeno garum sauce has a solid amount of heat and deliciousness. Granted, I can handle a lot more, but this isn't a competition. For the general masses, it's enough to experience the heat without going overboard, methinks. - Pate had a great combo of pate, pickled vegetables, fig jam and bread. It needed all to be put together for maximum enjoyment, meaning, don't half-ass it and instead eat it altogether. - Butter mochi is awesome! Delicious through and through. - Server was super attentive and kind. Reasons of opposition: - Fried rice with crab: overall dish needs to be warmer (crab tastes better that way) and the rice was clumped together too much which means some of the sauce and flavoring didn't have any seasoning, no matter how much you try to mix it all up. - The trio meat had flank steak that should be medium rare and not well done. If you like well done steak, all I can say is you're missing out on the tenderness and delectability of a medium rare. At the very least ask how we like it. The pork shoulder was the highlight of the three. - For pate, the bread need to be less crispy and warmer. It was very much like a giant crouton. I can respect it if that's the chef's intention, but it didn't improve the taste for me as a warm, thinly sliced baguette would. - Shishito peppers with the umami salt needs to be charred. It was very light in seasoning and the char would have amplified the taste a lot more. There's not a lot of flavor otherwise. - Chicken breast (in the Trips Triple) is dry. That's it. Good taste, but dry texture. Overall, there's nothing here that would make me jump at coming back, but if I'm in the neighborhood and want some Japanese fusion food, Spinning Bones is a fine choice. If they could just tidy up the details of the dish just a bit more, I could see myself wanting to dine here more often. read more

We ordered 3 beet salads, asparagus appetizer, two fried chicken sandos, chicken lickin (mochiko chicken), trip's triple (1/4 chicken, pork shoulder and tri tip), corn fritters, and butter mochi. The beet salad and asparagus appetizer were okay - nothing special. The other dishes, however, were well executed. Chicken lickin was crispy on the outside, seasoned well, dark meat chicken, and came with a really tasty aioli sauce. You should definitely order this to share. I didn't get to try the fried chicken sando because they were my hubby's friends' orders, but they loved the sando. The corn fritter wasn't really my jam, but everyone else enjoyed it. They know how to fry food because the two fried entrees that I tried weren't oily at all. Temperature right for sure! Finally, the trip's triple - the chicken was a bit dry, but the pork shoulder and tri tip were cooked to perfection. I suggest ordering just these two meats. Oh, can't forget about the butter mochi..quite pricey..$9 bucks for a small piece of butter mochi, but it was the first time that I've had butter mochi that wasn't too sweet. Service ignored us. We waited nearly an hour for our meals. 1 person didn't get their meal until an hour after we ordered. Editing my review after a spirited reply from the owner. Yes, I don't post reviews often. I only post when there's a terrible experience. I should really try to honor the other establishments that, even in covid, are doing amazing jobs. That's totally my bad. That said, the owner did give us free stuff. But honestly, we didn't ask for it. I absolutely don't mind paying for the things I order/consume. The dessert is still in our fridge and probably won't be eaten. LOL I thought we were quite patient, actually. I had to go into the restaurant and found our last entree waiting on the counter. Our sides got delivered even later after our last entree. The food was fine. A little on the salty/overdressed side, but salt is such a subjective thing. So this review isn't so much about the food. This review is mostly about the service. Certainly, there are ways to communicate with clients when unexpected volume or disasters in the kitchen cause delays and issues. That didn't happen here...unfortunately. As for trying to communicate at the restaurant, we tried 6x to get somebody's attention. We realized going into the cashier area was the only way any communication would happen. Our server literally never checked on us after she took the order and delivered part 1 of our order. People have been raving about this place so I finally decided to try it. Menu is a bit odd. Everybody enjoyed their food... Salad, large plate of meat... probably better for sharing, at least what we ordered was... but the service was junior league and no heaters outside which in Alameda is a bit of a problem in the evening. Hi, I have visited Spinning Bones in person a few weeks after they opened and was impressed with the food. I especially loved the St Louis Ribs so suffice to say I was excited to try again for delivery. While the flavors of everything were spot on still, I was incredibly disappointed by the ribs. The fall off the bone meat has disappeared and I was sent ribs that seemed to be cooked for 30 minutes, Chinese take out style. As I know this was not the case before I am hoping this was a fluke and will hear from the restaurant. Every since I moved here I have heard about chicken licking' ... but to my disappointment, it wasn't what I expected. I ordered chicken licken but got fried pieces of thin, fat thighs and very disappointed. $15 seriously and the aioli was like Mayo. read more

Amazing food by way of Orange County...and seasoned with everything we love about the bay. Have enjoyed slaw, chips, rainbow bowl, pickled veggies, tofu salad, sandos and a spanking good brownie walnut mochi cake?!?
