Chicken Biryani
Bea R.

I'm not in Edison very often, so I knew I had to take advantage of the moment and eat at one of the many amazing Indian restaurants in the area. We decided on Spice House, located right on Lincoln Highway in a small plaza. We walked in around 9pm on a Friday night and were seated immediately. The restaurant wasn't busy at all; there were only two other tables with guests. It's a small place with a casual, mom-and-pop type of feel. Nothing fancy and not too big on decor. It mostly has booth seating and some tables for larger groups. They advertise themselves as an Indian and Pan Asian restaurant, but their menu focuses primarily on Indian cuisine and a few Indo-Chinese fusion dishes. So you'll see paneer, momos, tandoori, fried rice, curry, noodles, etc. on the menu. They offer Halal, vegetarian, and non-vegetarian options. Prices were very reasonable; most entree items were between $14-$16. We ordered: *Garlic Naan $3.50 - Come on, you can't go wrong with ordering naan (leavened, oven-baked flatbread)! Although it was good, it didn't hit the spot for me. I wish it was more fluffy, soft, and buttery. I've just had better :/ *Chicken Biryani $14.95 - An aromatic and flavorful dish made with basmati rice, marinated chicken, and whole spices (cardamom, cloves, bay leaves, etc.)! Chicken pieces were tender and seasoned to perfection. The basmati rice was fluffy and verrrrrry fragrant. You can tell it absorbed all the flavors of the spices. Just a heads up y'all, the chef really lives up to the restaurant's name. I like to think I have a decent spice tolerance, but this was a little too spicy for me. Thank goodness they gave me a side of raita (yogurt sauce); it helped a lot with cooling down from the heat. *Delhi Butter Chicken $14.95 - DELICIOUS. The tandoori chicken was marinated in a mix of spices (red chili powder, turmeric, cumin, etc.), ginger, garlic, and yogurt, giving it that iconic smoky and spicy taste. But the gravy was the star of this dish!!! It's mostly made out of tomatoes, butter, cream, and a mix of spices. The tomatoes give it a very distinct tangy flavor, but it's balanced with some mild heat from the spices. The butter and cream gave the sauce a smooth and creamy texture. I would order this again! *Gulab Jamun $3.95 - This is my FAVORITE Indian dessert. It's milk pastry balls doused in a warm sugar syrup with rose water and cardamom. Almost similar to dunking a donut hole in syrup... but this is 1000x better. It is reallllllllllly sweet, but that's right up my alley! This was a satisfying meal! I'm happy with the affordable prices and portion sizes. I wish I lived a lot closer so I could try out more dishes. They also have a weekend buffet on Saturdays & Sundays from 12-3pm. If you're in the Edison area, definitely include Spice House on your list of Indian restaurants to try!

Very good kadai and somosa chatt!! They were very well seasoned and a little spicy and sweet respectfully. The prices are very reasonable as well! The chili dumplings are okay, very spicy in a not so good way that sort of clogs your throat. I think they do Indian/Pakistani food better than indochinese.

1/2 -- 4.5/5 Stars Spice House - Edison, NJ We were so impressed with Spice House that we actually went back a second time just to dive deeper into their menu -- and they did not disappoint! From the start, the food quality was surprisingly good on our first visit, and I'm happy to report it held up perfectly on the second. Over the course of our two visits, we ordered a ton of dishes: Sweet Chicken Corn Soup, Sweet & Sour Soup, Steamed Chicken Momos, Mixed Grill, Garlic Hakka Noodles with Chicken & Shrimp, Garlic Shrimp, and Goan Shrimp. For dessert, we tried the Falooda, Gulab Jamun, and Carrot Halwa -- all delicious and satisfying finishes. The portions are generous, the service is friendly and attentive, and the flavors are spot-on. It's not a fancy restaurant by any means -- more of a casual sit-down spot with a big take-out crowd -- so don't make it your go-to date night location. But if you're craving really tasty food at nominal prices that won't hurt your wallet, it's definitely worth a visit. Overall, I really like this place a lot. Consistent food, great value, and solid service. My rating this go round, is a solid 4 out of 5 stars. Will happily return again!

The mango lassi's are delicious as well as the honey crispy chicken. Like an Indian take on general tso's chicken. I will definitely be back to try some of the other options on their menu.

I actually saw this restaurant from a yelp notification suggesting I check it out. The name sounded familiar but I didn't think I went before so it was worth a try. It wasn't very busy but it was a pleasant experience. It's not a high traffic area, the other shop space in the block were also empty businesses. The only workers I noticed were the owner and a waiter. They took our order, and if there were any other requests we had, they got it for us quickly. The food was good. The proportions look like they're small bowls but I consider it to be a really nice shareable size for maybe 2 and a half people. So it's enough to share between 2 people but it's plenty enough where neither would stay hungry. My group had 3 people so we ordered 2 entrees which both came with rice and a soup. It was enough where we had our fill and didn't take leftovers home. It's been a while since I haven't taken leftovers home from a restaurant. Some might think that it could be too little, but I found it to be the just right amount. Taste was flavorful and expected for what was ordered. I did order a falooda to go which I personally get excited for as I think it's such an indulgent combination. As expected it had noodles but it wasn't soft enough for me to thing it was that good. Most of the sugar came from the kulgi ice cream that was used so it wasn't aggressively sweet but a nice milky drink. I'd bring people to this restaurant again to show them what indian food is like. It's not crazy spicy but it is a comfortable kind of palette in their food

I have never tried Indian chaat and a review from a Yelp friend got me tempted to give it a try. Unlike most of the restaurants on the Edison stretch of Rt 27, Spice House is on the northbound side. Signage is huge and professionally designed. Parking is plenty and easy. The interior is also well thought out with red and yellow ethnic theme. The menu contains Indian and Chinese dishes. I knew I was going to try one of the chaats so I asked the manager for his recommendation. As a result, I ordered Samosa Chana Chaat ($8.95). In the process, I learned that the manager isn't Indian but Bhutanese. That may explained the color theme? It took a bit longer to prepare despite no one else was waiting. I think that was because the samosa either had to be cooked to order or had to be reheated properly. The rest of the ingredients were cold and ready made and just have to be mixed/sprinkled in. Most if not all chaats are vegetarian, so I didn't expect to be wowed. But the taste was explosive! It was plethora of spices, temperatures, and textures. The samosa was hot and chunky, the yogurt was cold and creamy, the chutneys were sweat, the curry was spicy, and the nylon sev was crispy. It was fantastic! I am glad I had a positive initiation to Indian street food. I will definitely venture for more in the future! P.S. 5% off if paying with cash

Cumin chicken
Angelo B.

The menu at Spice House consists primarily of Indian dishes, although there are some Chinese and Hakka options too. The food was decent, although in general way too much sauce. Started with the drums of heaven (basically hakka style fried chicken chicken lollipops). I've had this dish at a few restaurants and love it, but thought that the ones here were not great. Just like the other food, they applied way too much sauce. Now I do like strong flavors, but this was just like eating sauce. Also I could barely make out any Indian/ Chinese/ Hakka flavors. The Hakka noodles were also disappointing. This just tasted like regular Chinese food to me. Slightly like Singapore noodles (from HK cafes), except less strong. Disclaimer. I did enjoy the Cumin chicken, as I'm a big cumin fan. This was flavorful with a fairly generous portion. Again too much sauce though. 5% cash discount. Large parking lot.

Paneer Tikka lunch special
Heather L.

Ordered the paneer tikka lunch's special online - restaurant is directly across the street from my work so was able to just walk over and pick up which was nice. Reasonably priced and decent sized lunch portion. Tikka was flavorful and for the size I was surprised how many paneer cubes I got. Would definitely come back and try other dishes. I also got the gulab jamun dessert but forgot to get a photo....a little too saturated but perhaps they were sitting for a bit.

We finally made it here after exhausting all the nearby restaurants. The restaurant is medium in size, with pale yellow walls and cushy burgundy seats covering the dark brown floors. Framed black and white photos adorn the leftmost wall while the name of the restaurant is on the rightmost wall along with a framed painting. Finally, in the back, you can see the counter, which has a lucky cat and some plants on it, as well as a large painting of pink flowers in a pond behind it all. We ordered the following: Baby oyster omelet, which has pan fried baby oyster omelet with chives- this was delicious. We haven't had this for a while and enjoyed it a lot. Golden fried eggplant, which is lightly fried eggplant with cubes of bell peppers and onions. We all liked this dish a lot, as well. It was nicely fried. Claypot egg noodle, which has pearl noodle with minced pork, shrimp, squid, bean sprout in egg gravy. We've been looking for this entree for a while. Last time Hubs had this was 15 years ago and it was 30 years ago for me. Hubs loved this dish. Basil fish filet, which is stir fried fish filet with bell peppers, onions, basil leave and mushrooms. I thought this looked sweet and sour and was surprised it wasn't. Daughter liked it a lot and was addicted. Hubs was shocked at how flavorful it was. There were plenty of onion and peppers. There is parking in the back of the building but we managed to find a parking space in the front. It's a little tricky parking there but we managed. Service was quick and minimal. Will definitely return to try other items on the menu.

But with that said, my girl wanted some Indo Chinese.... so we made the trip here to see whether it's worth a second visit. Now, to be clear: the Rose is a Pan Asian Cuisine. So it's not necessarily just Indo Chinese, but it also encompasses flavors from all the other countries too. We ended up ordering 3 items in the following order: 1a: Gobi Manchurian 1b: Smoked Vegetable Sizzler 2: Mushroom Sautéed in Ginger Garlic We ordered the first two together and those arrived relatively quickly. The Gobi Manchurian was the better of the two, but I wonder if it was a bit too overpowered with spice and less of the sweet and sour taste (or even the soy sauce). The spice was a bit too overbearing. The sizzler was fine, but it was mostly onions and peppers. The tofu - while cooked fine - surprised me because it was like the silky ma po tofu (which coincidentally is what they serve here). In other words, the same tofu is repeated across multiple meals. I think the tofu needed to be pan fried at least for a sizzler. Because of the above, we didn't feel full and thought that the mushroom would provide a different taste pallet. Unfortunately, that was a miss as the mushroom had the same taste as the gobi manchurian, when it should've been infused with the ginger garlic. Additionally, the mushroom was way too overcooked so you couldn't even taste them either. It was like a crunchy mushroom. No good. To make things worse, the waiter, who also manned the front desk, seemed a bit too aloof at times. Often that meant not refilling water unless prompted and not providing the check on time or not even setting up the tables properly with silverware. It was a bit disappointing. This place has the potential, especially with the cute decor. But failed execution with the food and some lackluster service do not make this a place I'd recommend in the future.

They had a fantastic peanut and avocado roll that I ordered with soy paper instead of seaweed (I really don't like the taste of the sea) paired with the soy sauce it was a nice amalgamation of flavor and texture, I thoroughly enjoyed it. We also ordered pan fried gyoza and edamame for the table both extremely well executed. A friend said the gyoza was melt in your mouth quality and I felt that was quite accurate. I tried my friend's sweet potato roll which did have seaweed wrap on it but I actually really liked that too! For my meal I got hibachi steak. It was a generous portion and very tasty. I'm not big on mushrooms but I even gobbled those up- so good!
