A little pricey but worth it. Flavor profile is elegant and delightful. The restaurant isn't big but flavor makes up for the location

Unlike many restaurants today, Nisiotis Taverna had pure virgin olive oil on the table in a clean white bottle which we used generously and thankfully to dip our bread into. Yum! The spreads were excellent and the pita was toasted just right and served warm. The pita was chewy, warm and well toasted. The lamb chops were grilled exactly to requested temperature and seasoned correctly. The fries that came with that were warm and crispy. Lightly sprinkled with dried oregano for that Greek flavor. The branzino was filet fresh and grilled to perfection. But I would suggest getting it with vegetables instead of potatoes, which were fine but not particularly special. They also had "off the menu" selection of sea food which were recommended and fresh. The black bass was truly as fresh as I've had in NJ, but slightly, just slightly, undercooked: A minute undercooked. This was actually good for me but some may recoil a little. Otherwise it was perfection. If you know how to eat fish, I'd ask for it whole, instead of fillet'd. The dandelions that came with it was over cooked but the mild flavor was a good compliment to the black bass. They also had large anchovies, which grilled properly would be awesome. The service was spot on but not intrusive but it wasn't busy because of our late lunch. The ambience and decor was charming and really helped to focus our minds towards beautiful beaches and warm breezes of the Greek islands, where this kind of food would be served. Overall a very good experience but slightly expensive. There was nothing wrong with the food per se but slight improvements here and there could make it fantastic: For example, vegetable was over-cooked, and black bass was just slightly undercooked. Regardless, I recommend this quaint Taverna! The owner's care and friendliness topped the scale from a four to a five star. Realistically, it is a 4.5 or 9/10.

There were a lot of empty tables awaiting reservations. The complimentary bread and olive tapenade were also appreciated. We really enjoyed the food: spanakopita ($20) was tasty with a very flaky Phyllo and a fresh salad with grape leaves and chunks of feta, things you don't normally see in a side salad. The pork souvlaki platter ($22) with fries was also very tasty. Their menu is not super big but adequate options. If you have a special occasion, this is also a good spot but be sure to make reservations and know it's a relatively small place. The atmosphere and decor are very comfortable though it can get very loud if there are a lot of customers (and these customers seemed to be enjoying their experience!); perhaps because of the small place and acoustics. BYOB. They had an entrance in the back so they likely have a small parking Iot there? But we found parking around the corner, as there's no 2 hour parking limit on weekends.

Located on a busy Boulevard in the heart of Hasbrouck Heights, I finally got the opportunity to stop in at this BYOB family-owned/operated establishment. Upon entering for lunch after 4 years, Sofia's Mediterranean Grill, named after the owner's mom, I was greeted by the staff. I got a booth, immediately knowing how they get crowded. The inside evoked a cozy and warm vibe with Greek music playing throughout. Outdoor dining is available, weather permitting. Their menu features an array of traditional Mediterranean dishes, offering a variety of soups, appetizers, salads, sandwiches, meats from the grill, seafood cooked various ways, and entrees cooked from the oven. I decided on the Greek salad with grilled chicken. The food was authentic, fresh using the finest ingredients, delicious, and prepared simply, which is exactly what I was looking for. The portion was healthy. The service is always friendly and welcoming. I got to connect with the owner, Nick, a fellow Astorian, to catch up about the old neighborhood. The price was reasonable. If one's craving the vibrant flavors of the Mediterranean, then look no further. One doesn't need to book a flight to Greece to enjoy authentic meals.

It was a frigid Friday night at about 6:30, so we lucked into a table for 2. Our waiter was personable and professional. He listed the specials for us and I selected the fried halloumi appetizer, avgolemono soup, and branzino for an entree. My daughter went with chicken kebabs and a Greek salad. The fried halloumi appetizer was perfectly fried sticks and was served with a cherry sauce which was the perfect accompaniment! Branzino was a great portion of perfectly cooked fish. My daughter enjoyed her chicken kebabs. It's a great place to have a nice conversation with some delicious food.

The menu length reminds me a bit of a diner menu in comparison to the usual Greek menu. There are pitas/gyros, platters, entrees, apps, salads and soups. There are also a few things on the menu that don't belong on a Greek menu: burger, quesadillas, and chicken francese; I'm not sure what to think about this but it would be something picky eaters could have! I enjoyed the spanakopita platter with fries and grilled veggies (spanakopita didn't have a strong taste, grilled veggies of zucchini, carrots, onions were soft and perhaps slightly overcooked but good). The shrimp souvlaki platter with mashed potatoes and rice was also tasty. Most platters come with two sides. They also give you complimentary hummus with pita bread. Service was nice and not pushy. The decor is pretty casual with some Greek art and knick knacks around, along with plenty of pictures of the chef. Their website isn't that great and seems more catered to to-go orders. It's located on a street with a few other places like a pizza spot but there are also a lot of empty storefronts. Street and metered parking before 8 pm. Given its location, not sure I'd be back anytime soon but I recommend!

Their menu was extensive, with the iconic favorites such as gyros, souvlaki, and other comfort food dishes with vegetarian options. As appetizers, we decided on the Dolmadakia - Stuffed Grape Leaves, Saganaki Cheese, and Fried Calamari. For entrees, we opted for Sparta Beef Gyro Pita, Chicken Chipotle on Gluten-Free Wrap, Spanakopita, Hamburger, Pastichio, and Sparta Fries. For dessert, the rice pudding with a birthday candle arrived, and we shared a slice of carrot cake. Complimentary pita bread with garlic hummus started our meal. Our food was authentically made fresh using healthy ingredients with bold flavors, making it one of the most delightful meals. The portion was a healthy size. The service was friendly and gracious without being overbearing; our server was Carolina. The price was reasonable for the area. Another exceptional dining experience for the book, which we can recommend.

Located on busy Broadway in Elmwood Park, we decided on our Christmas Eve dinner at this family-owned establishment. The reservation was easily made via OpenTable. Upon arrival as first-timers, my partner and I were greeted by the owner at Taverna Mykonos and got a table for two right away in the corner where the tables are close to each other inside their cozy, very dim-lit, and elegant dining room with Christmas music playing throughout. There's a full bar with an extensive selection of Greek wines, with approximately 80% sourced from regions across Greece, as well as other excellent choices from California and Spain. The menu featured both authentic traditional Greek dishes along with many other options. The restaurant bakes all of its bread as well as its desserts. Traditionally, the meat of choice served during a Greek Christmas meal is lamb and pork. For starters, we decided to share Keftedes (Greek-style seasoned meatballs served with tzatziki dipping sauce). For our main meal, we opted for Baby Roasted Lamb with roasted potatoes and Lamb Shank with tomato orzo. Complimentary bread started our meal, and we washed it down with a sparkling spring water product of Greece. Complimentary cookies were given to each table at the end of the meal. The food was fresh, using quality ingredients, tasty, and well-presented. We enjoyed the keftedes very much, as they were moist and complemented well with the tzatziki dipping sauce. The portion was reasonable. However, we were disappointed with the Baby Roasted Lamb, as it was mostly bones with only some pieces of edible meat. Service is professional, friendly, and fast. The cost is comparable to the area. Exchanged a few words with the owner, George, about the old neighborhood in Astoria. Opa!

I felt gaslit because I have never had Parmesan with such questionable green growth on it for consumption in any restaurant in my entire life. We started with their complementary bread, so fluffy and light, we pretty ate the whole thing before any of our dishes came. I ordered my favorite fried liver cubes from the hot apps section, and it was fantastic. It was full of flavor, perfectly sized cubes and properly fried. Tasted so good with the complimentary bread (we requested a second one). For entree we ordered the Mix Grill and Karisik Izgara as it was a perfectly sharable dish for two and we got to try 5 of their kebabs that are lamb shish, ground lamb, chicken shish, ground chicken and grilled meat patties. Both ground kebabs were excellent, full of flavors. The shish and patties were also good. We got the margarita pizza too, but that one was disappointed, seemed like some sauce was just thrown on top of the cheese and wasn't baked long enough. Our server was really friendly. She always stayed on top of things. Our dishes came out in quick time, it was impressive. Despite the shortcoming of the pizza, which is not usually a Turkish dish, I was thoroughly impressed by the actually Turkish dishes, like liver cubes and kebabs.
