Oh my this was a delight! A few friends and I had to go to a wake in town and we were starving after. We're not really familiar with Tenafly but Axia Taverna was down the street and convenient. We were blown away by the food and service. Everything we ate was excellent! From the pita politiki (phyllo dough stuffed with spinach and artichokes) to the Tuna Tartare, Fresh Feta and the steak. We really ate well. For dessert, we shared the cheesecake and Galaktoboureko which was a semolina custard in phyllo dough. Didn't get as many pics of the dinner / dessert but trust me, you'll enjoy it! Overall, this is a beautiful restaurant with great ambiance. Seating is available both upstairs and downstairs. I grew up in Tenafly but haven't lived there for almost 40 years. When my family was returning for the funeral of our 97 year old father, I was looking for a place to have a group dinner for about 16 people. When I asked my high school classmate, who I knew still lived in the area for a recommendation, he recommended Axia Taverna. The restaurant Manager, Tim was a pleasure to work with in arranging our reservation and we enjoyed the entire upstairs. The food was amazing and the service from William and the others was so attentive and friendly. My Aunt, age 81, said it was the finest evening she had ever enjoyed. I wish I lived closer (I live in Nevada) so I could eat here on a regular basis. It is a wonderful restaurant. read more

Probably the only "fancy"(???) restaurant ^^ in Tenafly that opens at 5pm on weekdays. Great ambience, Staff, and ample parking, and just an OK food. What we ordered : 1) Tzatziki (of course) with pita bread ($10) : the pita was was baked(??)grilled(???), but became really hard in about 15 minutes. Some people would have preferred this crunchy(?) pita, but we would like softer fluffy ones. 2) Salad with Beet & mizithra cheese *$16) : cheese was quite bland (similar to ricotta cheese) and we would have preferred feta cheese to give it a bit more flavor. 3) Grilled octopus ($24): what can go wrong with grilled octopus at this price ^^ 4) Moussaka Tenafly ($24) : I was expecting a more general Moussaka, or was all the previous moussaka just wrong ....??? This one was too mushy, watery(??) from the eggplant. It was soooo soft that nothing much to chew on. I came for a work lunch and they serve a limited menu at this time. My team shared the trio of dips and Greek salad as starters. All were great but I loved the smoky eggplant dip the most. However it look a while for our entrees to come out, closer to 40 minutes. I ordered the avocado gyro with chicken. My meal was okay, it didn't wow me. Food and cleaning table) sort of just need 1 to 2 people for a service too many hands isn't good. The food was good. Enjoyed the company of 4 others who said their food was good. Fancy | Expensive | Quality food This is a fancy restaurant in the neighborhood, as I noticed all customers were nicely dressed. But the restaurant doesn't have any dress code, as I was able to dine in shorts and flip-flops. Due to Covid they do outdoor seating only, but they have plenty of tents (seating) available. We were able to sit in right away on Sunday evening dinner. I liked their food a lot, the octopus was delicious, lamb chops were tender and the prawns were grilled to perfection. Let me just start by saying the food here is very very good. Last night the wife and I sat at the bar, love this bartender, makes a really good and ample martini. We shared watermelon, tomato and feta salad, a special, lamb meatballs and the bronzino. Very steady alway good food. In the past I also like the octopus, very tender and the moussaka delicious, very filling. Only downside when it's to busy, staff is short and service is lacking. Especially poor an 2nd floor. My pet peeve is when the drinks take forever. I get it's hard to get staff, but when I'm out for dinner at least get me my drink and a piece of bread read more

Came here for my anniversary and the food was so good! The lamb was really tender and tasty. The mashed potatoes were so good as well as the grape leaves. We ordered drinks and they were not diluted; they were really strong! One thing we noticed though was that the upstairs seating area had so many flies. This is just an outstanding place for either lunch or dinner, and one of my very favorite places for a special meal. First, the ambiance is calming and classy. The staff is well-trained and stable; they won't be gone for half an hour when you asked for something. Now for the food: If you love Greek food, this is a find. From appetizers to dessert, the menu is excellent and you will have a hard time disliking anything. Some favorites include the sautéed zucchini chips, with roasted paste of tomato sauce, the bread is even perfect. Meats, chicken and fish are all delicious and cooked differently. Axia is by far the best up scale restaurant in Tenafly. Don't get me wrong, we've gone there in casual clothes with the kids so when I say upscale, it's pertaining to quality. The food is fantastic and fresh, the specials are always new and exciting and the drinks are great. The host and much of the wait staff have been there for years so when you visit, you see familiar faces who are attentive and friendly. The food preparation is timely and always the perfect temperature. Axia will always be our local go to restaurant for occasions and when we don't want to guess about the experience we're going to have there. It's always perfect. I'm in my 50's , so lots of experience in really great restaurants . Tonight at Axia- The Maitre d took our expensive bottle of wine , which we brought from home after confirmed with the restaurant it was acceptable to "bring your own wine" and pay $35 cork fee - in the back to decant it, he came out with the wine in a decanter and poured several glasses before I could ask him to taste the bottle first- basic protocols?!? One glass had excessive cork in it - lots of cork in fact, but the wine we brought tasted fine- not sure what they did to open the wine . When we asked the waiter to clean the cork out and pour a new glass the Maitre d reappeared , and informed me the cork fell apart in the bottle , and "the cork was a mess ". I asked why we weren't informed and got no answer, I got an angry stare instead, And the dinner took a terrible turn the next 2 hours . Yes , that's a long time ! The waitress took our order , over 90 minutes later we were given the wrong order - 3 out of 6 dishes totally wrong . They didn't put a setting down before dropping the dishes on the table- so they did t know what the basic normal protocols were. The waiter asked do we want the 3 orders first. We said no please bring out 6 new orders , 5 minutes later they tried to bring out the 3 orders again, we explained it would be awful that 3 of 6 at the table ate their food first, the dinner for the other 3 was at least 20 minutes , the staff were now furious at us ! . The looks we got from the wait staff the remained of the experience made it clear we were no longer welcome. The dinners came out , it was approximately 9:30 for a 7pm reservation. After we had to Send the fish back raw, the meat wasn't eaten (it was cold), and the 3 dishes that went missing and finally made it to the table over 2 hours later , were absolutely awful. Pasta with scallop and shrimp on top- like eating chef boy ardee when you were a kid, not exaggerating . The 1/2 chicken was good. The apps were all good too. They couldn't make a drink, and had to be asked 2x to bring out drinks we ordered - the wait staff were def untrained . Then - it went from really bad to a disaster/ the chef came out after our guest complained about the cold meat (and asked for a piece of cake to celebrate our friends 50th) he asked us to leave the restaurant , refused to bring out a piece of cake for our friends 50th bday- never been so shocked in my life . I eat out at restaurants all the time, never seen this. He says he's the chef for 16 years at this place- do yourselves a favor, find another place to enjoy your special night, the manager, chef, and waitresses - all of them - don't deserve your business after what we witnessed. We got reprimanded by the chef , the Maitre d was belligerent toward us the entire night, and waitress was lost and never smiled once since we sat at the table- it's a cultural thing at this place for sure. The Maitre d took a $100 bill one of guests handed him to give to one waiter who seemed interested in making things better for us- the old man threw the $100 bill at my friend. He yelled "and you brought your own wine" as if they don't accept BYOW, which they pre-approved, A shouting match ensued , we left with both the chef and Maitre D carrying on like 2 cowboys from the Yellowstone show, walking us to the front door, with arms crossed and defending/barking their track record in response to the disaster we endured. We're happy to bring our business to many other great spots in Bergen , if you want a classy & positive energy for a special Night - avoid this place for sure. read more

Upon arrival we were greeted warmly by the hostess, taken in by the beautiful ambience and marveled at the ceiling to floor display of wines that covered the length of the indoor dining room. (There was also an outdoor dining option.) Our server came over almost immediately and and we were given a choice between sparkling or tap water which was then delivered to the table right away. There is the option of scanning a QR code for the menu or using the paper menu on the table. The wine list is quite extensive. As it was our 1st time here and we knew nothing about the restaurant, other than what we explored online, we wanted to start by ordering a couple of appetizers to get a sense of how the chef prepared the food, portion sizes, and also have the luxury of taking our time. We were disappointed when the server said that the chef insisted they all be ordered at once. We thought for a moment about saying something but decided against it. This did leave us with a bit of a negative impression of the restaurant which was almost completely overcome by the quality not only of the taste of the food, but the presentation and the spot on temperatures for all dishes. As we continued to enjoy our meal the tables did fill up and I was aware of the noise and voices bouncing off the varied ceiling heights from one side of the room to the next. Because of the generous portions we did decide to take some of our entrée home in order to be able to enjoy a signature dessert, espresso, and uzo. Being 4:00pm we hoped it would be open, it wasn't but the gentleman standing in the doorway, Tim the owner, said we could come in for a drink. Gracious that it was, it just getting better. Let me just start by saying it's been 10 months since we went out for dinner with my husband. We chose Axia because the menu looked so good and it was even better than I expected. The outdoor sitting was set up very nicely in the parking lot. Tables were more than 6ft apart and all the staff were masks the entire time. We started off with a bunch of appetizers: Horiatiki salad was so good, feta cheese just melted in my mouth. My husband ordered grape leaves -dolmadakia kriti, Kefalograviera Saganaki which is baked shepherds cheese flamed in metaxa brandy and a salad which I don't remember the name of. When he bit into grape leaves he closed his eyes and moaned, that's how good they were! Baked cheese dish was amazing. For main course, I had pastichio which is a Greek version of lasagna. It had a flaky and crunchy shell and yummy noodles & beef inside with bechamel sauce. My husband had Solomos Kalamata which is salmon with olive crust and rice. We should P.D. stopped there but I couldn't resist the yogurt Napoleon. Now, look at the pictures and feast your eyes. I highly recommend Axia and will definitely be back. I have had enough of this place. It used to be the best upscale Greek food in the area.. No longer.... I have been going here for years and I've watched the decline. This is not just because of the Covid times. This is really just the owner not caring about his employees, it's obvious the place is run like an upscale diner. The service is lousy and the worst part of it is the the bartender, when choosing to sit at the bar. He is absolutely fake and rude all of the time he barely smiles and gives no feeling of warmth or comfort. When dining at the tables most of the waiters and waitresses don't speak good English and are usually overworked and they don't provide the service that this upscale restaurant should be giving. The food has gone downhill in many ways and the prices have gone up! A lot !!! I understand prices are up everywhere but this place is just out of control their quality is low and again service is low. So if you're looking for an upscale great place don't go here they've gone downhill and really they should be working harder in this exclusive area to provide good service and good food which is a rarity overall in Bergen county. This is long overdue. My 2nd time in to Axia, AND MY LAST. This is not so much a negative review, as it is a very critical one. Hopefully, the owner/head chef/ general manager find it, and actually absorb what is being said. To me, being from the culinary world, this is one more restaurant that is in the stages of "legacy"; living off a former reputation, and becoming increasingly lazier by the month and year. 1st - I came in months ago, with my girlfriend, and ordered the salmon (Solomos Calamata). The waiter even asked me how I wanted my fish cooked?? (Bad training or ignorance?) Sorry folks, there is only one way to cook fish -- til it is flaky, but still moist. That's IT!!! The outside was nice, but the inside RAW. Instead of being a complainy jerk in front of my gal, I opted to eat the outside politely, and then slam the middle in the microwave for 30 seconds, once back home. It's a crusted fish man, not rocket science. Now to our recent trip there. 2a - The "Pita" bread, given upon seating: This was rock hard, AND 50% burned, AND given with about 1 tbsp of olive oil (which ran out long before the bread, leaving nothing to absorb any punishment). 2 lonely lemon slices sat there, as well. Maybe sour is the perfect counter-taste for burned? (/s) I would have been content with nothing, as an option. Ate it because I was starving to death, and again, trapped with a be-polite situation. 2b - Ordering something, only to find out 5 minutes later, no more are around. 2 Moussakas were ordered, then a waiter came back, and (politely) stated only 1 was left. I can guess these are made by day prep cooks, and hang in the fridge, or a staging, until something is ordered to fire. So again, as we strive in the culinary world not to disappoint customers... it would have taken a true culinary artist 10 minutes to create another. Deduced from the overall menu, I could tell you that everything in that dish is in quick arm's-length reach to make one more. It's not that exotic. 2c - My Pastichio Rhodos ----- Comme ci, comme ca... sigh. It was ok, but there is nothing extraordinary about the dishes here. My dish was reasonably tasty, but still uninspired. When you cook for people, you cook to impress!!! Random thoughts, and conclusion: -- There was an elderly gentleman meandering outside. By his demeanor, and loose looks, I am guessing he was the Owner or GM. Sir please, quit meandering. Your ambience is fine. Your quality & opulence of food, is where your criticisms need to be. Get in the kitchen, point finger, taste-test, kick ass. -- The ambience again, nice, and I suspect, like any legacy restaurant, is being used to distract from declining food quality. Alcohol, nice decor, and a cool painted-concrete dining area outside w/ nice lights, are enjoyable, and great diversions from lack of cooking skill. -- The most impressive flavor of the night, that I pulled by accident, was the dill in the yogurty french fry dip. Grrrrr. I don't even have words for the lifeless french fries. Don't try to tell me they're some "Greek specialty". -- The waiter(s) really didn't make any effort to refill waters, or even lightly stalk our table (like good waitstaff should) and 2 people at our table ended up bumming water from the others. The food here, honestly, is maybe 2-3 steps higher than what Gordon Ramsay would refer to as "Drunk-people food"; when people are inebriated, and don't care what they're shoveling in, as long as there is salt & grease. Sorry, but this is the world of culinary, and you don't have be a douchebag food critic for a big newspaper, to guffaw or extort your way through a review. WE ARE ARTISTS, AND WE TAKE PRIDE IN OUR CRAFT. Ramsay only says, what many many others think. We are out there. The prices here should be 66% of what they are. This is the level of cooking, and "effort" as I see it. A dish that is $48, should be $32. Something that is $22, should be $14, etc... ----- So there you have it folks: ----- (A) The food is neither extraordinary, nor condemnable, but it's just sad that one cannot get really REALLY GOOD food, without spending less than Michelin Star prices. (B) The ambience is great. Overall review? Left for your discretion. Some people like ambience, and some people could gladly enjoy the biggest hole-in-the-wall, if the food is killer.
