Hummus and pita
Mel Y.

Tasty Greek food with a large menu, reasonable prices, in a casual environment On a Saturday evening, there was only one other party there but if it was filled I could imagine that it would get loud. The menu length reminds me a bit of a diner menu in comparison to the usual Greek menu. There are pitas/gyros, platters, entrees, apps, salads and soups. There are also a few things on the menu that don't belong on a Greek menu: burger, quesadillas, and chicken francese; I'm not sure what to think about this but it would be something picky eaters could have! I enjoyed the spanakopita platter with fries and grilled veggies (spanakopita didn't have a strong taste, grilled veggies of zucchini, carrots, onions were soft and perhaps slightly overcooked but good). The shrimp souvlaki platter with mashed potatoes and rice was also tasty. Most platters come with two sides. They also give you complimentary hummus with pita bread. Service was nice and not pushy. The decor is pretty casual with some Greek art and knick knacks around, along with plenty of pictures of the chef. Their website isn't that great and seems more catered to to-go orders. It's located on a street with a few other places like a pizza spot but there are also a lot of empty storefronts. Street and metered parking before 8 pm. Given its location, not sure I'd be back anytime soon but I recommend!

The Garden State is incredibly diverse, with a variety of nationalities having a major impact on exactly how New Jersey is, particularly when it comes to the extensive choice of international food patrons can enjoy. A favorite for many is Greek cuisine, with a number of delicious restaurants that can savor a sliver of the Greek islands year-round. Based on the staples of the Mediterranean diet, its culinary culture became more sophisticated as part of the Byzantine and the Ottoman Empire, receiving many influences at the crossroads where the East and the West meet. Located on Main Street in the heart of Ridgefield Park since 2004 and named after the owner's hometown, Sparta Taverna is a family-style BYOB establishment. A reservation was easily made for dinner via OpenTable. Upon entering this cozy, casual, and inviting vibe as first-timers to celebrate an early birthday, my partner, our friends, and I were greeted by the staff and got a table immediately surrounded by hand-painted Greek scenes. Their menu was extensive, with the iconic favorites such as gyros, souvlaki, and other comfort food dishes with vegetarian options. As appetizers, we decided on the Dolmadakia - Stuffed Grape Leaves, Saganaki Cheese, and Fried Calamari. For entrees, we opted for Sparta Beef Gyro Pita, Chicken Chipotle on Gluten-Free Wrap, Spanakopita, Hamburger, Pastichio, and Sparta Fries. For dessert, the rice pudding with a birthday candle arrived, and we shared a slice of carrot cake. Complimentary pita bread with garlic hummus started our meal. Our food was authentically made fresh using healthy ingredients with bold flavors, making it one of the most delightful meals. The portion was a healthy size. The service was friendly and gracious without being overbearing; our server was Carolina. The price was reasonable for the area. Another exceptional dining experience for the book, which we can recommend.

The owner is a well known chef.

Day 1: Escape from NYC to Bear Mountain and Westchester County Eatery 1 of 2 I had the good fortune to visit New York City and stay with a friend from grad school who lives on the Upper West Side. At times, I felt like I was imposing, but I was reassured that I wasn't. With having lodging in such a great location, I decided it would only be fair for me to take care of the meals and some sightseeing. As it happens, I got a bodacious deal on a rented econobox at La Guardia ... for a price that you would get in the sticks elsewhere. I've driven around the Tri-state area before and thought that this would facilitate seeing things beyond what the MTA pass allowed. In driving across the stately George Washington Bridge at around noon, I knew that we would be eating in New Jersey. One stop would be the village of Ridgefield Park, a place in which I've had immigrant relatives who bordered on sitcom material. The plan was to go to a popular cheesesteak place that I had bookmarked, but it was closed. I couldn't believe it. So I continued to drive down Main Street. I saw a Greek restaurant and something about it was familiar. It was that I had bookmarked it based on a Yelp friend's review. The eatery is named Sparta Taverna. It's an unassuming place inside a brick storefront. Once inside, it's comfortable and unpretentious. We sat about two-thirds of the way toward the back. The server introduced herself and was very accessible at all times. The menu at Sparta is quite vast. There are two pages, and then there is also a separate lunch menu with specials. At any rate, I ordered a chicken souvlaki platter that, in addition to the skewers, came with a Greek salad and the potatoes how I like them. My friend ordered a more traditional gyro as well as a small side salad. I really liked my meal, as all of its pieces tasted like they should have ... and I eat Greek food whenever the opportunity presents itself. What was on the platter vanished fairly quickly. My friend liked the gyro and the side salad, but then my friend isn't as emotive when it comes to giving a yay or nay to food. At the beginning of the meal, we were brought small pita triangles surrounding a dollop of hummus. I really appreciated that. The prices at Sparta are very fair. The variety offered is very good. Even though the desserts looked tempting, we skipped on them to move on with the day. As you move away from the restaurant and this small hamlet, you come to realize that you are very close to New York City, given that one is cautiously avoiding ramps that would put you on the tolled direction of the George Washington Bridge back to the city. We would be heading up the Palisades Parkway in New Jersey. On the way out, I stopped to take a few photos. I noticed that there were photos in which Guy Fieri gave Sparta Taverna his seal of approval. I almost didn't need to see that because I find Guy Fieri grating and that he veers toward being a big "cafone." But, then, I've ended up at eateries that have been on his show without knowing that in advance, so history is repeating itself. I could definitely eat here again and recommend it. That said, Sparta Taverna gets 4 high and solid stars.

I've been coming here for the past 7 years. At first it was great, not sure if they changed the cook or the ingredients but the salads started looking a lot lighter and the last trip the shrimp was mush.

My husband and I just moved to the area and had a few friends and family members recommend Sparta as a great local spot to check out. We went on a random weekday and were surprised to find a good number of parties dining in. Since the area is full of seemingly great restaurants, I took it as a positive sign that so many were choosing to also dine at Sparta that evening. The menu is pretty robust and I don't know enough about Greek food to speak to its authenticity, but my heart went straight to the falafels. Some might consider it sacrilege to put both fries and falafels into a wrap, but I applaud such audacity to happily 'junkify' a dish. Realistically speaking, both of these fried items suffered a little in the crunch factor after sitting together in a tightly wound wrap, but the flavor and fun was definitely there. My husband enjoyed his gyro wrap just as well, though he encountered a few drier bites here and there. The side Greek salad we ordered (mainly to balance out all the fried food in my order) was delicious if a little smaller in size than we would've liked. The surprising highlight of our meal was the eggplant dip that we ordered as an appetizer. It was served cold but delicious, and the accompanying pita bread was warm and slightly buttery tasting. Never did I think I'd be writing home about how good the pita bread in a restaurant was, but neither of us could stop talking about it - both during and after the meal. The restaurant is surprisingly spacious, and service was polite and responsive to our needs. Would definitely recommend if you're in the area!

Trio of Dips

3 1/2 stars - Two of us had lunch here. Falafel wrap w/side salad was good although the falafel was overcooked & dry. I had the trio of dips - Eggplant, spicy feta, & hummus. Loved the eggplant dip, spicy feta was very salty which feta can be salty at times. Hummus was OK - kind of mealy. Very nice interior & service was good. If in the area again, I would definitely go back. Street parking only. BYOB.

Ordered moussaka and spanakopita which were wonderful! Reminded of my trip to the Greek islands. Excellent!

This has turned into my favorite Go-To place to have delicious Greek/Mediterranean food. I LOVE their falafel wraps and the customer service is TOP NOTCH. They are always very patient with me as u always order through the phone, the food never disappoints and I could eat every day at Sparta if I can. Also, have you heard of the owner's George recipe book? Well, he just released his book based on the dishes listed on the menu and it's AMAZING! Definite recommend this book, it's so easy to make their dishes. George was kind enough to share it with us. If you haven't tried Sparta yet, I highly recommend that you do. You're welcome :)

Ordered lunch specials for pick up, everything is well seasoned and the portions are generous. The staff is friendly and the decor is spot on.

Greek salad
Cez R.

We had dinner last night for the 1st time in here and ordered Moussaka, greek salad, gyro pita. Our waiter is nice and very attentive she check us every now and then. The moussaka is perfect not salty, not dry it's a must try. even the greek salad perfect also Except the gyro pita the meat is a little dry and sauce is a little bland compared to other Mediterranean place i ate for the fast few days and week. And I don't want also a Gyro served with a fries inside instead they putting enough meats and vegetables they put french fries, ( the fact the gyro served with fries on the side) additionally there is not enough vegetables inside and the tzatziki sauce. The pita bread also is too thick it over power the lack of meat and tzatziki. The place is a little old but neat maybe they should update it a little so it will be more cozy and can compete to other Mediterranean restaurant nearby ( FYI englewood has new one, Cliffside park and others near town) While waiting also for our food they give us on the house pita and hummus. This place also is a BYOB.. hopefully our next visit we found more flavorful food they can offer.

It was 5pm on a slow Monday so we were seated right away. The interior is cozy, quiet, and clean. We started with 3 Mixed Appetizers along with their complimentary warm bread. The 3 dips were all solid but nothing out of the ordinary. Good flavor, smooth & creamy texture, and great for sharing. I love ordering dishes like the Mixed Kebab Platter for Two as we get a taste of everything and it's family-style. The presentation was beautiful, the meats were tender, and I like that they paired it with rice, bulgur, and some salad. All the meats were tender and well-seasoned but could've been hotter in temperature. I particularly enjoyed the chicken & lamb adana kebabs. My other minor complaint was the sides were not enough to share and the ratio compared to the meats was off. We definitely could've used more rice with the meats. The staff were super kind & friendly the entire time. Decent try overall!

The restaurant has an interesting history. Even though the original opened in Cresskill, NJ, it unfortunately has permanently closed. However, not only is the Edgewater location amazing, but it had the guts to open during COVID (2022), survived, and is succeeding. The restaurant is beautiful inside and outside. Their decorations are tasteful, the presentation of the food is award winning, and the service is stellar. I started with a Mocha Cappuccino and it was so good. Served in a large mug, an airy/creamy top, and had the perfect amount of mocha happiness throughout. Before the meal even started, we were graciously given Za'atar (a popular Middle Eastern spice blend with an earthy, tangy, and nutty flavor, toasted sesame seeds, and sumac, with salt). It was crunchy, drizzled with oil, and I enjoyed how each thin pita bite made the spices explode all over the table. The entrees were: Strawberry French Toast. The next was the Falafel Platter (chickpeas and fava bean balls, served with tahini sauce, pickles, turnips, tomato, and mint). The last selection was the Avocado Toast (Citrus cured salmon over multigrain bread, tomatoes, onions, capers & citrus vinaigrette). Not only were all of these dishes beautifully presented, but all were filling, as well. My Avocado Toast kept me full for the rest of the day and the salmon was enjoyably salty, thin, and delicious. I noticed a dessert in their display case and ordered it. The dessert was the Riz Bil Ashta (Lebanese rice cream, infused with orange blossom water, blended with milk and cheese, and topped with crushed pistachios). This dessert tasted like a regal custard and the pistachios added an enjoyable texture that makes it recommended. Of course, I had to cap the meal with a Mocchiato. This amazing beverage followed the rest of the meal..... delicious, eyes closed good, and every sip was full-flavored. Thank you, Madison Café and Grill, for presenting a memorable meal and I wish you continued success.
