We stopped here after reading good reviews but severely disappointed with the empanadas. The beef empanada had virtually no flavor, it was practically straight up ground beef in a homemade dough. On our trip to St Augustine my boyfriend and I decided that one of the things we had to do during one of our mornings visiting was to stop at a bakery and indulge in a pastry and coffee. After taking a quick look on Yelp we decided to stop here. As you can tell by my stars, I wasn't really satisfied with what I thought was to be at least a decent experience. When we arrived there was a line out the door which thrilled me. That must mean the place is legit, right? Nope, just another tourist trap. There were two small cases of baked goodies. On one side they had a case which contained two kinds of empanadas, chicken and beef. In their second case they had guava pastries, Cherry turnovers, and bread. Not a very big selection but after waiting 10 minutes to even get up to the counter to see what they had, we decided to bite the bullet and committed to ordering. He ordered a guava pastry and a bread roll as well as a cup of coffee. I ordered a cherry turnover. Before I get to how the food was, let me tell you about the service. There were three ladies working, one of which would float around here and there, cleaning off dirty tables, delivering food, cracking a joke with a random customer. She was great. The other two? Not so much. While one complained about how she regretted saying she wanted it to get busy this morning, the other would scowl and mumble complaints under her breath. When my boyfriend ordered the coffee you would have thought he insulted the lady. There wasn't much coffee left in the pot and although he said he would gladly wait for a fresh pot, they gave him the remainder of what was already there. It hadn't even filled his cup. Not one to complain, he paid and outside we went to sit down and enjoy your pastries. I bit into my cherry turnover and it crumbled into a billion little pieces. The cherries, obviously canned jelly, and the flaky outside tasted stale. I ate on anyways. My boyfriend's guava pastry was much better, flavorful, but both seem to have a strong refrigerated taste. The bread roll? Nothing to rave about it wasn't warm. It had no special taste. It was just a roll. My overall experience wasn't horrible but it wasn't great either. My advice? With so many other tasty places to go and spend your hard-earned money on, dodge this place. read more

From the time of discovery at my 4th grade field trip to present visits, the Spanish bakery is a must do destination when in the area. Tucked into a secluded courtyard in a reconstruction of the Salcedo House, it is the ideal spot for an inexpensive and authentic lunch experience. There are minimal frills, so don't expect much, it really just a simple order and go place. The chicken soup with rice is a classic, and for a paltry addition of $2 you can make it a meal complete with a drink and a cookie. The soup is hot and fresh and comes alongside a soft, pillowy bun perfect for tearing and dipping. Other regular options include the picadillo, or choice of homemade empanada. In addition, the Spanish Bakery has rotating "specials" as well. On the last visit a particularly interesting choice was Minorcan sausage pilaf made with local datil pepper (an extra spicy variety indigenous to the area). Place your order and then move along. Super rude customer service made us turnaround and leave before we even ordered. The female with blonde hair who opened at 10 am on Dec. 31, 2019, needs customer service training stat! We wanted to order cinnamon buns (highly recommended by our hotel's front desk--special treat for our 8-year-old daughter) and didn't see any. We asked her if she had any and she said, "No" as she rolled her eyes. We then asked if any were coming soon and she said, "Yea, sometime today." We asked if she knew about when and she angrily snapped that she doesn't work in the kitchen so how would she know. Then we left. I'd rather spend my money in the dozens of other eateries with kind people behind the counter. I hope and pray the owner reads this and takes action. read more

Stopped here for a light lunch touring St. Augustine. Was wanting to try Spanish food and surprisingly there was only a few that were open for lunch and looked decent. Came to Spanish bakery to try, well, Spanish food, but was very disappointed to find an attempt to make something very far from an authentic Spanish bakery. They sell a Serrano ham sandwich...that does not have Serrano ham! But some country honey ham. Just bizarre. Empanadas were a 3 at best. The Spanish bakery is only open on Novembruary 32nd, between the hours of 3 am- 3:13 am. I am kidding, but really, it's a small window. Blink and you miss it. 11am-2pm. I grew up in St Aug, and the Spanish Bakery was grounds for skipping school. The main draw for me was the freshly baked bread. I think you can get a small loaf, which is perfect for one person, for $1. There is also some sort of lunch special for $5 which includes an entry, a cookie, a drink, and a bread. I hear the empanadas are delish, but they are pork, which isn't my favorite. I should just get over it and try one the next time I am in town. The bakery is located in a secluded courtyard off of busy tourist destination, St. George St. You have to walk past Whetstone's to get into the courtyard. The building is a tiny structure that probably used to be the kitchen for one of the historic homes. You eat outside under the oak trees. My only complaint would be that they have Parkay fake butter in squeezy bottles out on the picnic tables in the hot sun as your only butter option. read more

They're back! Actually, they never left! There was a foul rumor in some newspaper that the Spanish Bakery was closed down, and I wept. A little piece of Saint Augustine died today - I thought. Then a few days ago, as I'm strolling down St. George's, THERE IT IS! They're back! When I went in raving about how happy I was to see them come back, the lady behind the counter told me they never left. All they did was close down for a few weeks in the winter to renovate, and some newspaper, without interviewing them, assumed the worst! Well, now for the review itself. I had the beef empanada, and my wife had the serrano ham and cheese. The empanada was nice, but especially good with a side of that hot/sweet sauce. Their bread is light and buttery as always. My wife enjoyed her sandwich, and we both enjoyed the cookies. They keep things very simple here. It's all baked goods, a few sandwiches and salads, chips, and canned sodas. If I was going to recommend any change, I'd like to have had the option of a small side salad (and I don't mean pasta salad) with my empanada. An empanada with a side of the bread roll, and a cookie, is rather heavy on the starch, though I don't deny I enjoyed it. They also will usually have two soup options, and you can sample. I sampled the picadillo. It tasted like a good no beans chili. I liked it fine, but it was a hot day and spicy chili was not hitting the spot. Glad I went with the empanada. Be sure to get a loaf of bread on the way out. They are $3 these days. I remember when they were a dollar in the 90s, but I know they'd go out of business if they sold them that price in 2015...so $3 is fine. Made a nice addition to dinner that evening. The Spanish Bakery acts as a sort of cafeteria/mess for the workers and visitors of the Spanish Colonial Quarter museum, but is also, of course, open to the public for limited hours. The fare is basic, and it is cheap. Always available are Chicken Noodle Soup, Empanadas, and Beanless Chili, served over white rice. Other soups and entrees come and go. For myself, it's four dollars for an entree, cookie, bread and drink combo. For you, it's five dollars. I am a city tour guide. Hah. What I really mean to say, though, is that it's a very affordable, very pleasant place to stop in for a basic meal. When school tour groups come through town, it can be hectic, with entire classes scarfing hot dogs in the courtyard. Great little spot! Found this place by walking by. It's behind another building/wall. You stand in line and order cafeteria style. The combo for $6.50 comes with one item (empanada, soup, etc),bread,a drink and a cookie. We dined under a large tree out side of the place. They have little picnic tables. It's very quaint. The chicken empanada was tasty! The chicken soup was the best I've ever had! The bread was good too. The lemon cookie wasn't the best but I ate half of it. I would definitely return. If you have been to St. Augustine any time in the last 30+ years I hope you have stopped by here. Tucked away on St George street is one of my favorite lunch spots and long standing St Augustine faves. With the area changing so much...martini bars, urban chains, and pirates around every corner it is nice to still have this little gem. Formerly family owned and operated the bakery was briefly closed and then acquired & renovated by Whetstone with the son of the original owner on board. A replica of the Salcedo house this place serves fresh, rustic Spanish fare in a no nonsense outdoor setting for reasonable prices. Those beautiful airy rolls with just a touch sourdough still remain, along with empanadas, sausage rolls, cookies and soups. They have added salads, pastries, an icee type machine and a few other items as well as extending the hours daily. & a credit card machine (cha Ching). After running from the rain at Ft Matanzas we headed to the old city and searched for some prime parking. The ominous clouds must have deterred tourists because they were empty at 1:30. We ordered a chicken and rice soup combo that comes with a cookie and roll; a side of picadillo soup, a beef empanada combo with cookie and roll; a sausage roll combo with roll and cookie; 3 canned beverages for $28. The chicken & rice soup is hot and flavorful with large chunks of chicken and a complementary portion of white rice and just the right seasoning. Picadillo --- think the inside of a stuffed pepper turned into a soup. This soup is hearty and eats like a rib sticking chili. The sausage rolls or as my kids call them giant pigs in a blanket are always a hit. Not too spicy or greasy. We always enjoy an empanada. A good portion of filling to baked dough outside. The dough isn't overly worked or dry but has a nice sheen and crispness. A variety crispy cookies from an old recipe with flavor like cinnamon, lemon and almond. If you are a crisp sugar cookie lover you will enjoy this little treat. Soups are served in styrofoam cups with plastics spoons. All meals are served on wax paper on a basket. Receipt has 10% off Whetstone. Always clean patio tables available with a few in the shade. A clean restroom just feet away. The service is more lunch lady cafeteria friendly than friendly tourist hospitality. No soup for you ring any bells? read more

Excellent food for the price! The only reason I select four stars instead of five is they have limited offerings during lunch and seating is outdoors with umbrellas, so no way to get out of the humidity while you eat. Fortunately, this isn't much of an issue since I'm accustomed to the heat and humidity of Florida. Enjoyed the chicken empanada meal that included a Coke, fresh bread roll, and cookie. My wife and I always make a beeline to the Spanish Bakery and Cafe; however, it has changed over the years. My first stop here was as a child on a school trip; and, this was part of the cultural heritage on display in St. Augustine. Now, the property is much smaller, albeit neater; and, the cookies are prepacked in plastic wrap. Still, I very much enjoyed the fresh-made Sweet Potato Turnover; it was delicious; and, still warm, covered in granulated sugar; and, crunchy to the bite. Very nice, despite the changes. read more

There is, of course, the added benefit of eating at a picnic table in the shade, telling the stories of the legendary lemon cookie squirrel. The legendary squirrel himself is long gone, but his descendants live on and if you're really lucky you'll have the honor of having your lemon cookie lifted by the crafty squirrels that bound through the Spanish moss, ever seeking delicate lemon cookies and other assorted goodies available here at the Spanish Bakery. We went to the Spanish Bakery today because we were looking for something a little different than the run of the mill. What we found hidden behind the fence was this great find. We ordered the Menendez Beef one with the jam and one without. I order with jam and am very happy to say it was the right thing to or. It is not spicy and adds just the right flavor. My husband and I sampled a big swath of the small menu at this place. The beef and chicken empanadas were both good but a little dry. Be sure to try the hot mustard and sweeter red hot sauce. They both have datil peppers and make everything tastier. The picadillo was rich and delicious. Far and away, the highlight of this meal was the cinnamon roll. Soft, warm, gooey, and with a maple-coffee frosting. The Spanish bakery is right in the heart of the Old Town and has quick service with nice courtyard to sit in. This is a Spanish colonial style bakery. I can't speak to the other items, but the bread, cookies, chicken soup, picadillo, and empanadas are authentic fare from that time period. In the old-fashioned way, the bakery is open early (9:30 AM - 3:00 PM) and once it runs out of an item for the day, no more is made. In other words, get there as early as possible. A lot of festivals have events that take place in the bakery's courtyard, and there is shaded bench seating there year-round. Spanish Bakery is where locals go for brunch, so you may see reenactors sitting around, talking. WHAT I'VE TRIED THERE: The loaf of bread, beef empanadas, and sweet potato empanadas. Great empanadas. Sweet potato empanadas are an off-menu special, but they always have them during the annual Minorcan Festival, which hosts certain events at the Spanish Bakery courtyard. The bread loaves are full size loaves, like the bread that the Pennsylvania Dutch/Deutsch make. My parents get a loaf of bread on virtually a daily basis (Give them this day their daily bread?). At $2 a loaf, it's infinitely cheaper (not to mention fresher, softer, and tastier) than grocery store bread. read more

My daughter ordered an empanada and I had a roast beef and turkey club sandwich and the food was just not very fresh.

As I look at the few reviews that are of the Bakery I feel it fair to say that there needs to be a more recent post. I have eaten there maybe Oh I am not sure 100 times and every visit its flavorful food, simple and always always a great value! To me the bakery is what St Augustine is, a city with great History great flavor and great value. The only thing that I could say against The Bakery is when the food is gone its gone to me though thats a quality issue thats what makes it what it is. If you are ever in the area its a must place to eat but, go early when the food is gone its gone! read more
