We were celebrating our anniversary and we had an amazing experience. They were very busy and looks fully booked when we arrived, but the service from the beginning to the end was excellent. Very attentive and thorough. It was bumpy start with the wine because of some miscommunication, but the servers resolved everything quickly. The menu is exciting and decadent perfect for celebrating special occasions. We ordered the seafood risotto, black truffle angel hair and the foie gras for appetizers to share. The server was kind enough without us asking to split everything in to two so we each got our own plate of food. A very thoughtful touch. For the main we shared the rack of lamb and it was cooked perfectly. Everything on the plate worked together and balanced each other out. Even if you are not a huge lamb eater, I would still maybe encourage you to try it. The gaminess is very mild and more buttery than anything. For dessert we were recommended to get the rum baba and wow was it good. I was at first concerned if the rum might be overpowering because of the alcohol, but it was not at all. The rum flavor is fully there but there is no strong alcohol burn. The cake is light and soaks up all the rum flavor and the cream topping. It was delightful way to end the dinner. Because it was our anniversary, they got us a nice box of cookies to take home to enjoy. They were a very nice accompaniment to some coffee or tea. read more

I was very excited to return to Spago, and while the food didn't disappoint, the overall experience was tainted at arrival. I'll explain. First of all, the food and service is quite good, exactly what you'd expect. I highly recommend the Spicy Ahi "Poke" in Sesame Miso Cones. Wonderful taste and texture, and fun to eat. My entrée, a grilled, Szechuan-style steak, was delicious. Just the right amount of heat and perfectly prepared steak. So, if the food was so good, why the low rating? When checking in, the hostess was unable to find my reservation. I explained that I had just received a confirmation call earlier in the day, and went to my phone to pull up my confirmation email. This is when I saw an email in my inbox stating that the restaurant had canceled my 7:45pm reservation at 7:16pm. They could not explain why they had canceled my reservation, but decided to seat us anyway as the restaurant was not full this night. Having my reservation canceled for no reason was incredibly insulting. I'm still fuming! The manager stopped by, and his nonchalant demeanor added insult to injury. He didn't even attempt to explain why my reservation was canceled. Instead, he offered a free starter - not at all what I was looking for or cared about. I just wanted an explanation for being made to feel unwelcome, unappreciated, and embarrassed, especially when I had been looking forward to this night for so long. A very bad restaurant. Every dish is 70 dollars. And I mean every dish including the apps. If you are interested in French fries you will have to pay the same price as a wagyu beef steak at 70 dollars. They are pillaging you at every turn. Of course Wolfgang isn't there to oversee anything, so your food comes out worse then what you could cook in your own kitchen. I'm serious, the place is only meant for those with so much money they don't care about the quality. If you are interested in a culinary experience with high prices but also a good quality experience, Spago is certainly not for you. The food is small, not a lot, and literally so overpriced, with a truly average taste. The Gnocchi and mahi mahi dishes came on par with what a bachelor would serve his new date at his pad. We came here for dinner because of the amazing view the restaurant offers.. We came early just before sunset to experience the sunset view. We sat outdoors and the staff was accommodating and they let us choose which table we wanted. Besides that, service was pretty lacking. Bread: To start us off, they gave us some amazing bread with butter. I forgot the exact name, but the Parmesan crisp bread was amazing! Of course, waiter didn't come ask us again if we wanted more bread, or water and he never poured our wine glass and we had to do it ourselves (the last one not being a big issue, but if this is supposed to be a "fancy" restaurant I think this is expected). Pan Roasted Organic Free Range Chicken - Maui Surfing Goat Cheese, Potato Purée and Hamakua Mushrooms: My least favorite entree of the night. The chicken was nicely cooked but the skin wasn't very crispy. All the items were solid but nothing was spectacular. Caramelized Pork Chop with North Shore Pineapple - Baby Bok Choy, Clove, Anise, Cinnamon, Thai Basil and Sweet Molokai Yam: This dish was incredible. The pork chop was really juice and tender and the sweet molokai yam was sooooooooo amazing. It went excellent with the pork. Lava Rock Grilled Bone-In New York Sirloin - Sautéed Asparagus, Maui Onion Rings and House Steak Sauce: Meh. Not the best steak I've had. I mean, it was well cooked but I think it was a little bland. Given my experiences at the other two restaurants in the Four Seasons I went in with muted expectations. I had heard of Spago, there is one in Palo Alto that I used to pass by all the time, but strangely I never bothered to stop in. I did know the restaurant (chain?) had something to do with a Wolfgang guy who has no connection to classical music and happily puts his name on crappy frozen pizzas. Not a great start. Yet my Spago experience was a total shock to my system. The cuisine and service really wowed me. I started with a tasty sculpture built of ahi tartar and sashimi (fairness qualifier: tuna quality was consistently great throughout Maui). Our server provided real wasabe freshly grated before my eyes which was a pleasant touch. Next I had a spicy seafood curry, which was fiery but still delicate. The sauce was better than crack. The wine list also came through, we chose the only Sancerre offered on the menu (quite reasonably priced at $65) and it was fabulouso. Thank God I managed to save some room for dessert, because the light-as-a-cloud banana souffl was as tasty as chocolate stuffed with chocolate. Yes, that good. There's a few awesome choices in Maui for dining. In two weeks we basically hopped from one restaurant to another. Spago was an easy choice. Known for being a romantic destination for dining. The setting sun on the horizon was priceless. Although I can say the same thing for the food and service. The staff here are well suited for the type of people that visit Spago. Nothing but the best. Spago is a very classy spot. It is inside the Four Seasons Hotel. That should give you a hint on what to look forward to. Pure attention on what you want and how you want it. I started with a cocktail called Hot Legs. It's one of their cocktails with cool really catchy names. It's Ocean Vodka, Guava and Lemongrass Ginger. Delicious. $17. Our Starter was this Spicy Ahi "Poke"in Sesame. $26. This ahi poke was very nice to look at. It came in an edible cone. The ahi poke itself was puréed and the consistency was almost ice cream like. Perfect match to the cone. For my entree I had the Roasted Local Monchong with Green Thai Curry. $45. Ginger, Lemongrass, Thai Basil, Lime Leaf, Wild Ramps, Snow Peas and Baby Carrots. The meat on this fish is so white. Thick and prepared well. Juicy. For Dessert we shared the Upcountry Banana Cream Pie. $16. Puff Pastry, Bananas, Creme Brûlée, Creme Fraîche, Whipped Cream and Chocolate Sauce. This is something new to me. Something different I guess owing to the fact that I don't see the creme brûlée . Although you'll know it's there when you try to cut the pie with your spoon to serve yourself, it's crunchy and cold. It's different but very good. Lovely surroundings and perfect sunset view. The outside was unsually cold and windy the night we were there. We were moved inside with no problem. The seamless handover to the inside staff was amazing. The positive: Our server was so kind and enthusiastic. The negative: The food was mediocre, the portions were tiny, and the prices were outrageous. I should also mention that they delivered two pieces of focaccia and two very thinly sliced pieces of sourdough bread with a yummy butter at the start of the meal and then charged us $22 for it! At no point did they ask if we wanted it and bread was not listed on the menu. Do yourself a favor and skip Spago--instead, spend that money on a good steak downstairs at Duo where you won't leave hungry and unsatisfied. read more

I've eaten at several Spago locations (including this one in Maui 2 other times) over many years and have always been pleased with the experience - until now. They served us food that I'm certain they wouldn't dream of serving to Mr. Puck lest they incur his wrath. This place is a tourist trap riding on it's laurels and they clearly don't care. Mushroom Tagliatelle, Thai Curry and Purple Sweet Potato Puree. Our bread course came and within 2 minutes the pasta arrived. Message - we want to turn this table ASAP. The Tagliatelle was lukewarm, AND it was obvious that no one salted it. It was bland. Once salted, if one could look past the lukewarm/tepid temp it seemed like it would be very tasty. Next the curry and the potato dish. The curry was a bit warmer but the potato dish was cold. We sent that back, reluctant to send back the curry and make a big deal of everything since the temp was on the edge of acceptable at the time after a test bit hoping the rest was hotter. It wasn't and it got cold quickly. The sweet potatoes once served at proper temperature were tasty. But all 3 dishes were served at improper temps, and one was unsalted. This is inexcusable. To add a final issue, our check had an error where a bottle of Pellegrino added erroneously so we had to send the check back for adjustment. Nothing was offered to make the evening right either. The sweet potatoes were kept on the bill. I don't expect anything for free, but I am surprised nonetheless because the Puck brand and Spago are all about luxury (they charge a premium that used to be worth paying) exceeding expectations. This meal which was a total fail in execution (temp, salt, pacing, error correction). My trust in the Puck brand has been broken and I no longer can recommend any Puck place - that's how egregious this situation was. The mark or a good place isn't whether mistakes are made but what's done to right them. read more

I have a review last year that noted a downgrade in Spago Maui. This year was a bounce back to what we expect there and led us to a second reservation this visit to Maui. Yes, they no longer had the dish (Wienerschnitzel) I had last year - but the food quality and service was excellent - the pork chop was wonderful and the risotto spot on. The spicy ahi tuna poke in sesame-miso cones is one of their signature dishes, and it's easy to see why. Every bite was a full taste sensation - salty, sweet, spicy, soft, crunchy, gingery. The sesame-crusted mahi mahi was also outstanding, and the yuzu sauce was the perfect accompaniment. And then the kaiserschmarren was a nice way to finish the meal - the pancake had a nice light texture, somewhat reminiscent of toasted Hawaiian sweetbread. And of course the Four Seasons service was impressive. Absolutely attentive and impeccable without being intrusive. We'll add this to our list of places we must revisit. read more

The service was 5 star. 4 dinners were way below par, and not properly cooked. Prices are ridiculous for the amount of food. We all went home hungry. My steak was car burnt, and too rare inside. Salmon was dry outside, and mushy inside. It's certainly a kid size portion. It's a beautiful location. Whales kept us entertained. Mahi mahi looked great, but was far as good as previous visits. Maybe they have a new chef or just a bad night? None of us will be back again. read more

The ambience of this place is to die for but unfortunately we had a couple of bad experiences: 1. Service: We were given a table that we didn't like so we requested to switch to something else. The hostess asked told us that wait should be 5-7 min for the new one. After waiting for 15 min when we checked on the status they corrected themselves and said the wait would actually be 35-40 min... when we told them what we were told before they arranged a table for us shortly after. 2. Food: I hated hated hated HATED their poke starter dish, and it was probably the worst dish I had in Maui. I couldn't taste the fish, it was swimming in wasabi and the other flavors of the marinade. And whatever the cone is made up of... it DOES NOT go well with the poke flavors. For main course we got thai curry - which was okay!, and the chicken dish- which was portioned enough to feed at least 2 people. It was very off putting to look at such a large portion of meat on the plate. Overall, not a great experience and not worth my money!! read more

Truly Amazing! Celebrated our 25th Anniversary. Couldn't have selected a better restaurant. The service was outstanding. Professional, Helpful, knowledgeable, personal, attentive, etc. I could go on and on. We tried the crab cake appetizer and it was so ridiculously good, we ordered a second. I tried the macadamia but crusted mahi mahi on a bed of Molokai puréed yams. Oh my was it good. Just the right size. So tasty. Perfection. My wife tried the seafood red curry that came highly recommended from two employees at the Four Seasons prior to our dinner. Great recommendation. Dessert was amazing as well. We ordered the chocolate soufflé and chocolate hazelnut dessert. Delicious! Fabulous! They even picked up on the fact that it was our 25th and wrote Happy 25th Anniversary on the plates in chocolate. I did enjoy the twenty something dollar appetizers but they were nothing to write home about. I am never really one to leave a bad review. I initially had a good experience walking in until the I was ordering and food came. I went to go have dinner for my four year anniversary and it almost felt like the server was selling me the most expensive things on the menu. I was told to get the sashimi platter that was $180, the bolognese gnocchi which was the only thing i enjoyed, the truffle pasta which was $95 and a steak. The truffle pasta was disappointing and when I told the server it was not good, he went off on how it was gluten free and was cooked in butter and all sorts of stuff. It didn't sit well with us and just felt like we were there just to be sold the most expensive things on the menu. I just wanted to leave an honest review for those that are considering going. read more

Young and clueless hostesses with zero training in how to deal with guests make guests wait quite a while like sheep and gave the very generic "so how was your day today' to literally everyone contributing to this impersonal mainland style commercial chain Spago feel. Views are great of course but food is pretty average with tiny portions and the waiters upsell you on the expensive dishes. Not sure why anyone would come to Maui to have an LA based restaurant experience. Would have been better to put more of a Hawaiian styled restaurant with beautiful Hawaiian personalities as hostesses. read more

The onion bread and ahi scones were delicious. Ordered A5 Wagyu beef. Came with a side of sauce which was concerning. It shouldn't need a sauce. Beef was chewy. Very unfortunate. Waiter rolled his eyes few times at our party when we asked a question or ordered a certain menu item at different times during out stay. Don't think he realized we saw him after he did it as he turned away. we tried not to ask questions after that. Waiter was nice afterwards but it kind of ruined the mood. Good ambience. Food is good, but it is very overpriced. Menu is very similar to the LA Spago--tuna tartare flutes etc... with some sushi. At some point you have to ask yourself if 3 slices of salmon are worth $40 even with the ambience etc... If you aren't staying at the Four Seasons, likely going to one of the less good tables. There are much much better options for food, location, and service on Maui and certainly at a better price. Easily the most expensive place I'm aware of on the island. read more

Has some of the most delicious food while visiting Wailea, and especially at Spago in the Four Seasons Hotel. The maitre D ( SARAROSE) was a wonderful host. Very friendly, personable and in complete control. It's not easy to book a table in Wailea these days. The island is over populated with tourists. Tasting menu review! I haven't seen many tasting menu reviews on here, so here it goes. First of all, the service was great. The servers were young but friendly, attentive and courteous. A plus for service. My son's kids plate was delicious. His salad had this cherry balsamic dressing which was amazing. His steak was cooked perfectly and had a delicious potato purée. His ice cream sandwich with home spun ice cream was lick the plate good. Sadly, my tasting menu didn't reach the heights of my son's meal. Spago may want to consider promoting whoever is cooking the kids meals to main chef. The first dish was a scallop and uni dish. I'm not sure how anyone can take imported Hokkaido scallop and Santa Barbara uni and make it taste "meh". The second dish was hamachi and tuna and while fresh, just tasted like raw fish. The corn agnolotti was ok, but the portion size was less a course and more the size of a Costco sample. Next, we had the coconut soup, Thai style. It was actually pretty good, but not as good as the Tom Kha at my local Thai restaurant. My mahi mahi was way too salty and the snapper tasted like mush. For dessert, the mango ice cream was da bomb while the chocolate was about as good as Haagen Das. Maybe it was Haagen Das. I didn't complain about the food to the server. I'm willing to pay the big bucks and not complain about it. Way too many people complain to get free food or a discount and I'm not one of those people. That's it! On a side note, Ruth Chris down the street was exceptional and they have an awesome 3 course meal between 5-6 pm. Monkeypod has a killer happy hour and was very tasty. read more

This is probably my favorite restaurant in Maui. Me and my fiance ate here twice in our stay at the Four seasons. Not only was it on our resort so it made it super convenient to eat at but the steak was A1. My Fish Hong Kong style was fresh and delicious . Service was A1. Everything we had was absolutely amazing from start to finish. This place is pricey and a splurge but definitely worth it for special occasion.
