Aunt Thelma's Fried Chicken.
Steven S.

The food and service as always great. Went there for our anniversary dinner, but I made a reservation for the wrong day. Yeah, I know. They immediately offered us a table on the patio. Not what I wanted, but was happy to be seated. Our server was very nice and accommodating. She brought us two chocolate strawberries and two glasses of champagne to celebrate our anniversary. The wife order the pork chop, and I had the fried chicken. Both were delicious and both were plenty to eat. The chicken was moist and tender and she said the pork chop was very tasteful. I was going to try the turnip greens, but our server recommended the sweet potato casserole. She was not wrong, loved it! Just a big thank you for accompanying my error and saving the evening. We will be back.

We had a reservation for 7:45 but we didn't get seated till almost an hour later due to another party chatting and the staff didn't want to ask them to leave. After they were finally finished, we were seated and our waiter came right over and took orders. Also, we were seated outside, and the heater didn't work. I ordered a lemon drop and it tasted "dirty"..I know sounds crazy but another lady said hers tasted the same. Moving on, I had the pasta with shrimp. I liked the pasta, whatever cheeses were used were really good. Overall, i would try them again to see if my rating would change!

Spectacular service, flavorful dishes, and intimate dining. The elk, boar, and bison meatloaf had a sweet yet savory taste. The customer service was top tier as well.

Fried pimento and cheese sandwiches in pepper jelly

Ok. I never give anyone five stars. This was totally five stars or more. Family dinner. Pasta was amazing. We added marinated mushrooms which made it even better. The appetizer pimento and cheese sandwiches were so different and amazing. Flavorful. Brussels and asparagus were pretty blah. Mac n cheese was good but on the dry side. Porch chop-- freaking amazing. Mashed potatoes were very good. Cocktails. The wine list was only so so. No holiday cocktails this year. Last year we liked the white cosmo. We subbed vodka in for the bourbon in the socialite and it was refreshing. The baileys flight was very good but disappointedly small. Salmon was five stars and this is a picky salmon crew. Totally a do over again and again. Service is always amazing. Alec was our server and he was awesome.

I think Southern Social has really great ambiance (sans the TVs at the bar which are, no matter where you go, tacky for a restuarant like this). Service was excellent and I for one appreciate a server who smiles- I don't care what you say... Foodwise - yeah not too shabby. We loved the fried pimento sandwiches though it was too much and they weren't all evenly sized (not sure why that irks me). The best thing we had was the pork chop. Very, very nice. Salad was good... the shrimp pasta was tasty but not special at all. They could've done more with that dish. All-in-all, a very nice Friday night dinner. We understand the popularity of this place. We'll also probably return...

The food was amazing. Callie was our server, the service was outstanding. We would definitely choose her to be our server next time. All around great experience.

Southern social is a staple for date night in Germantown. It offers southern classics with a fancy twist. With tasty apps and hearty entrees, this place is very satisfying.

I love this place for a special occasion dinner. Their service is always top notch. If you are celebrating something when you make your reservation, they will customize the menu to say Happy Birthday or Anniversary. It is one of my top special occasion restaurants.

We went here for one last date night before the arrival of our baby and everything was delicious. We started with the Fried Pimento Cheese Sandwiches. I got the Shrimp & Grits and my husband got the Tomahawk Pork Chop. We ended with the seasonal Blackberry Fried Pies & Ice Cream. Everything was very yummy, and our server was great! I'd highly recommend for a quiet date night.

TL;DR: Really fun relaxed environment serving great food. The staff is a little green in both taking orders and serving but overall a good eating experience Ordered: - Deviled eggs and crispy gulf oysters (3/5): normally love both components individually so we ordered this thinking it would be great. Disappointed table :/ - Shrimp cocktail (3/5): average shrimp, nothing noteworthy - Fried pimento cheese sandwiches (4.5/5): GET THESE. Also get some other people to eat it with you. Such good flavors but that much fried bread and cheese gets heavy quick. - Chilean sea bass (4/5): Good sear on the halibut and pairs well with the sauce. Yummy fish dish overall. - Asparagus (4/5) - Pork chop with Brussels (4/5): cooked through but a little on the well-done side. Brussels paired well with the herb butter Will be back - cheers, Southern Social!

We visited on a Wednesday evening and made a reservation. The staff were extremely outgoing and friendly. We tried several dishes and drinks, and the food was phenomenal.

How cow! This is a high end, date-night restaurant bring your husband, boyfriend,, wife, maybe even your girlfriend to this wonderful place. It has BBQ dishes but is much much more than that. First, the staff are highly professional, doting and there are tons of them. The waiter, the room Maitre d' and many others speckled around the restaurant. They care! The music was barely discernible and might have been the bar Tv din reaching out table. The chatter was a little loud so that I had to talk loudly to be heard and place a cupped hand to my ear to hear. :-( Maybe the owner should consider heavy drapes or sound deadening wall and ceiling coverings. The fried pimento cheese sandwich was stupendous! It was fried to a perfect crispy crust, the cheese was melted to a velvety smooth dollop and served on a very shallow pond of toothsome sauce. The fried chicken was a show stopper, eating it was a drop-the-mike moment and truly one of the best I've ever had...by far. Perfect crust and seasoned and cooked just right, plus moist and very flavorful chicken. The tater tots were not so crisp, not much honey and the jalapeño specs were concentrated onto a few of the tots rather than applied to all or most. Suggestion to chef--brush on a light coat of honey then place in a bag with finely minced jalapeño and lightly shake. Just trust me. Try it. The biscuit was excellent --cooked just right and prepared with conscience and thought. Moist and some wonderful spread was a pleasant surprise. If go back!

Ask the Community - Southern Social

Is there a certain dress code to come to this restaurant?

Not really, but you might seriously consider at least dressing up in "nice casual" clothing to fit it! This IS a high-end restaurant.

Do they have takeout?

They do! You can call in to go orders.

Is it kid friendly?

Well, I think that the menu is definitely geared toward adult tastes, but I have seen children seated in the dining area.

Is there enclosed outdoor seating during winter?

Yes there is an enclosed front patio and an open back patio with heaters on both.

Do they allow you to bring a bottle of wine in?

I believe you can for a corkage fee. Best bet is to call and confirm.

What is the typical dress for this restaurant? My siblings and I have reservations for the night before Thanksgiving and I'm worried about being under dressed. Would dark jeans and a nice top be appropriate?

Perfectly fine. its somewhat of a semi casual place. I usually do a button up and jeans for guys.

What's the dress code?

Business casual. Button down and jeans or slacks. Sport coat optional. For a female jeans and a blouse or nice top or a dress. We always play it safe with no hats or holes in our jeans. It's a very casual but classy place. GET THE FRIED CHICKEN LOL

Do you need reservations for Sunday Brunch? I tried to make reservations, but reservations only start at dinner service.

Is there open seating at the bar? My husband and I have reservations for tomorrow night but would be fine sitting at the bar for dinner if we're able to go earlier?

Yes. However, don't count on there being a seat. We've waited for a good hour for two seats to open up. We didn't have reservations.

We thoroughly enjoyed our dinner in its sun room with a neutral natural palette that I once indulged myself at the Rose Tavern in Canandaigua in Upstate New York. That nostalgic feeling of being in a beautiful tavern is pure delight. Absolutely beautiful restaurant, truly deserves limelight recognition in Germantown. Our darling Annalise server was extremely friendly. We loved the presentation of our dinner, but the octopus was a bit soft for our taste. I've had plenty of octopus in other cities and understand the dish is typically more expensive, but a small single mediocre tentacle is quite pricey for $28. I personally prefer a crispy and firmer chew for octopus. The scallops and shishito peppers were a delightful pairing. Valet parking shouldn't be forced upon the customer though? I felt bad that I don't carry cash to tip the valet, and valet is mandatory unless you want to park on the side streets and walk over. Do carry any cash! I wish that a portion of the parking lot was open for self parking though as those boys don't need to help out every guest who don't need valet and subjecting them to wait around for the boys to grab cars that we're perfectly capable of doing ourselves.

I had a perfect dirty martini and my husband had an excellent old fashioned ( chose not to do the smoked version. ) We were seated at the time of our reservation with courteous and prompt attention from our waiter. He informed us of all the specials and gave us the right amount of time to relax before ordering. The food was excellent and beautifully presented. I like the atmosphere, not too large of a dining area, I like the separate room of tables, with a fireplace, along with the area of booths for a more intimate setting. I do believe C and I have only been here once as a couple. It did not go well at all, so we have not been back together, as she is holding a bit of a grudge. It's a long story but it all ties back to service. That night we had the worst table in the building and service was spotty at best. Food was still pretty good, just whole ass annoyed by the entirety of the rest of the experience. I am lucky enough to be able to be taken to/host dinner with clients and manufacturers a good bit. They like places like this so I get by ever so often. Gotta love expensed meals!!! Tehehe I like the open kitchen concept they have and the bar is really cool. The metal shelves at the bar that store the booze are bad ass. It's warm and cozy and has a great vibe overall. The last time we sat on the enclosed patio. I had not sat out there before. I think the larger tables all go out there. We had seven and there was another group of about twenty in the same room with us. Food ranges from fairly good to fucking great. I've never had anything bad here, but a few sighs have been had, mostly by misunderstood expectations of what I was getting I would say. So, quite possibly I am the problem. As with most of my problems, actually... The oysters Rockefeller are very different from the norm. Fried oysters on a side of spinach. That's what it seems like. I ate it up, don't get me wrong. I did just switch to only fried oysters after the first one. No need wasting stomach space on spinach. Charbroiled oysters is always a good move and the preparation remains traditional on that one. I do find the oysters to be quite massive and hard to chew the whole thing at once. Cutting them just seems silly though. Steaks are prepared very well and to your liking each time. I have never had a bad one. Good flavor too. I am going to spring on the Hawaiian Ribeye the next time I go on my dime. It's a classic that I remember from Steak and Ale as well as Houston's. Both now gone from Memphis. I like the she crab soup an awful lot, and just about every entree I have had here is killer. You really cannot go wrong with the food. Just order something you normally like and boom. I will also say this. The short ribs I had last time were some of the best I have ever had. Bravo on that! Additionally, I had two giant pieces for like $40! I could only eat one of them after all of the appetizers. Oh.... Yea. They have a hot lobster roll that is good! You don't see that in Memphis very often!! Get you some. Wait.... Lamb Lollipops. They have evolved some of the years but they have really good lamb chops. They used to be the exact same dish as their sister concepts of Itta Bena, BB Kings, and Lafayette's. I am not sure if the whole family still has the old version or not. Here it has changed a good bit. As I write this, I crave it.... Ugh. Damn your foods and your seductive prowess food skills! Lastly, Tommy Peters did great things for this city's food scene. I am sad that he is gone but I know he was proud of this one! Ok. That's enough, Adam.... No one reads this crap anyway. '26 - 48

I ordered the shrimp tossed in chili teriyaki sauce, as listed on the menu. The shrimp were fried extremely hard and arrived cold. Instead of being properly tossed in sauce, there was only a minimal drizzle on a few pieces, which made the dish feel incomplete and not as described. The catfish nuggets and fries were just okay--again, both arrived cold, which seems to be a consistent issue with food temperature. The bar experience was also disappointing. The green tea shots were not made correctly, and the "double" shot of Jack Daniels was poured more like a single. In addition, the menu did not include any drink options or pricing. While the waiter mentioned they have a full bar, having a drink menu (even a basic one) would make ordering much easier and more enjoyable, especially for guests looking to try something new. Service-wise, the waiter was clearly overwhelmed and not very available, but when she did come to the table, she was very kind and pleasant. No complaints about her attitude--just a staffing or management issue. Overall, there's definitely potential here, but improvements are needed in food temperature, menu accuracy, and bar consistency to elevate the experience.
