Arrived around 7:00 last night. Ordered the special. Chicken Chesapeake Sandwich. The sandwich arrived. The bay fries were good. Large bun. Opened it up to find an over-cooked piece of chicken that was barely larger than 2 chicken nuggets. My wife asked where the crab dip was. Hidden under the tomato slice and 2 pieces of lettuce was a light spread of crab dip. But I guess I should be grateful for the tiny amount of crab dip because I was sick on the toilet at 11::00 pm. read more

A charming and unpretentious establishment, which this avid watcher of the TV show "Kitchen Nightmares" thinks has done everything right. Food prepared by a source you can imagine has a knack for cooking and was encouraged by friends and family to start a restaurant and who went about it in a thoughtful and pragmatic fashion. I was drawn to this place because of the positive reviews and the idiosyncrasies of the restaurant, namely its menu with limited offerings. I interpreted the latter as a sign that the chef was playing to their strengths and appreciated the value of that--i.e., that the chef is *not* (a.) deluded by visions of grandeur, or (b.) a sycophant of the latest flashy culinary trends and its cultish following. The menu also features an item or two--or, in the case of the Daily Specials, mostly--that I think are directed at diners for whom the comment, "I like seafood" actually means "I like the breading that covers that Not-Chicken/Not-Onion-Ring and is Deep Fried." I had the boiled Crab Cake Platter and a slice of peach pie. The crab cake was chunky and meaty in texture, and it was flavored to complement (rather than outshine or compete) with the taste of the crab. On a spectrum which features at one end Red-Lobster fare (the Worst), this crab cake would clearly fall at the opposite end. The peach pie was delicious. It doesn't go for the endorphin cheap shot. Rather, it artfully sweeps you up in its sweet and comforting embrace. The first bite of pie inspired the thought that this pie must be featured in every get-together I participate in from now on. The attentiveness and earnestness of our server, Ben, set the tone of this very fine dining experience. Well done! to him and the people/person who realized that this young man would be an asset to the establishment. He reflects well upon this restaurant and is an ideal representative. read more

I've had crabcakes all over Maryland, and this place makes my favorite. Big lump crab in every bite. My kids love the homebaked cookies and outdoor seating. Fishing with Captain John is a blast, too. We will definitely come back! read more

Once again SCC messes up our order. My wife and I live within a mile of this restaurant so needless to say it's always an option when we decide to order take-out. I can honestly say that 9 times out of 10 the order is incorrect. weather it's them forgetting to put fries in with our special or forgetting to put bacon on a bacon cheeseburger. It NEVER fails. Very frustrating to get home; ready to eat and you have to run back out to get something corrected. The sad part is, is that the food is descent and the managers/owner seem concerned when you tell them there was a mistake. The fix is not to give someone a free meal or something, but to build a culture of quality control within your employee team. It's to the point where I would rather order from the Wagon Wheel, Dockside, Peti Greens or Skippers. There are plenty of other good options around Deale. Patrons beware, if you order take-check your bags like you were in a McDonalds drive-thru. read more

Under new management this year has made a difference in the restaurant. The front counter is better defined and the kitchen appears to be more organized. The food is consistently good although a bit pricey. It's THE place to go for Thanksgiving Pies, but be sure to order ahead. They make somewhere around 1,500 pies each season. Each one a masterpiece. The food is always wonderful at this tiny cafe but the staff are curt. Upon arrival and while ordering our meal, the woman taking our order seemed miserable and disinterested. We came down to Herrington Harbor for the weekend. We checked out reviews on yelp and found this place to be the most promising. We hustled to get there before 7, but they are actually open til 9. Service was friendly. The food was pretty good. Crab dip was tasty and not too rich. Good rolls and bread. I had the fresh rockfish crab imperial which was delicious and the carrots were good too. My wife ordered the chicken salad sandwich which she didn't like because of the sweet pickles. I'll eat it for breakfast. It looked fine to me. She ordered a Greek salad which was good and already chopped which was nice. We'll go back again next time we're in town. read more

The food is great. The staff is super friendly. But, the pies are where they really shine. I easily order 50 pies a year from South County and have yet to be disappointed. Personal favorite: cherry cheesecake. Once Thanksgiving rolls around the pie selection expands and you get things like Rum Pecan for the adults and Ooey Goey Pumpkin for the kids. I have been to South County Cafe many times and for many years for breakfast. Lately they have been really lacking in service and quality of food. I have ordered sausage gravy and biscuit platter to go and when I got home found out it was some sort of left over turkey gravy. What a very happy surprise. Then the other day my husband ordered a breakfast platter to go with scrapple and again when he got home had a sausage patty instead. What a sad disappointment. Then today I ordered an everything bagel and cream cheese which one would think be simple. But the bagel was barely toasted and the cream cheese was prepackaged and tossed in the bag along with a knife. When I order fast food, I expect it to be ready to eat when I receive it and not have to prepare it further by toasting it and spreading cream cheese on it. This is a downgrade from the typical service and quality from this cafe. Not to mention the service is very slow. Your best option is to order by phone and pick up otherwise you will be waiting minimum 15-20 minutes, dine in or take out. read more

This is the best restaurant we found near our Marina, in Deale, MD. The waitress that has served us several times is OUTSTANDING. My only wish is that they served the Schnitzel with Lemon butter caper sauce regularly, rather than just a special. It's divine! read more

Very disappointing experience. I ordered a Greek Salad with grilled chicken and told the woman (*didn't get her name!) taking my order that I have a wheat allergy. She shrugged her shoulders, practically rolling her eyes and said "What do you want us to do about it, we're not a wheat free facility here. There are crumbs all over the counters from making sandwiches". I stated that it would be great if they could change their gloves & I would assume that my lettuce and salad items wouldn't be straight on the counter with the crumbs. Honestly, I regret eating there; I was nervous eating my salad and didn't end up finishing it. Had I not been with a group, I would have left. I have never encountered anyone so blasé and uncaring. Most restaurants will try to accommodate you, although sometimes they just can't. She didn't care. I will never eat there again. read more

There's nothing like consistently good food that is fresh. The crabcakes here are awesome, so if you are trying to get your seafood fix, these are the best. I simply cannot give this cafe enough praise. It is so cute, and warm and welcoming. I came in on a busy night but the staff was still so friendly and helpful! I ordered the special for that night, which was a trio (crabcake, salmon, and rockfish). I couldn't believe that the owner had caught the rockfish that morning! I am glad I got the chance to try all 3 because they were just fantastic, however I think the favorite was my salmon. I dare say that it was the best salmon I have ever had at a restaurant. The crab dip appetizer was to die for- we were all spooning every last bite onto the fresh bread which was crusty and perfect. I also liked that they had no corkage. BYOW! I hope I get lucky enough to come back and try more of their delicious food- and this time save room for the cherry pie that was catching my eye on the way out the door! Great job, South County Cafe. This place is hit or miss. I find that more often than not my orders are incorrect if I ask for any variation from the menu. During the 2014 Holiday Season, I pre-ordered a shrimp platter for a Holiday Party. When my husband went to pick it up, they discovered they gave our order away to someone else! Their solution was to provide us the leftover shrimp in the display case (not peeled). I paid $$$ for a peeled jumbo shrimp platter and got mini cocktail shrimp that needed peeled - not very appealing for a cocktail party. Most evenings their "specials" are sold out as well. read more

I love the South County Cafe. My realtor told me about this place and I'm so glad that she did. I live in neighboring North Beach and sometimes I go there just for dessert. The blueberry and cherry pies are amazing! I also like the bar-b-q and reuben sandwiches. John Whitman does a terrific job with his restaurant and charter boat fishing trips. I get breakfast and lunch at his cafe regularly, which are cooked to order and very tasty- everything is homemade. In the evening the dinners are also terrific- plus byob allows for a complete dinner. Outstanding seafood meals with fresh local vegetables and homemade deserts- there are also a wide selection of sandwiches. The fishing trips are unmatched- I have fished the Chesapeake for over 40 yrs and John's boat is the best. Brand new, large and very comfortable we enjoyed a recent morning of rockfish and bluefish angling which at the end while the fish were being cleaned our 6 man party enjoyed a complimentary tasting of our catch at his restaurant which is a stones throw from the marina he fishes out of- 6 bluefish filets breaded and cooked to perfection- delish!! Prior to that we had a crab cake lunch John cooked for us on the boat while we continued to troll for fish. At $15/person the crab cake, pasta salad, cole slaw and cornbread was exquisite and well worth the price. Even if you are not fishermen- a ride on John's boat is an excellent site for a gastrocruise- he is a well known caterer and can provide an unmatched experience just gliding across the Bay. John is a true professional and only wants the best for his guests. He knows where the fish are and how to cook them- do yourself a favor and ck him out- on land or on the Bay. read more
