    Korean menu

My coworker brought me here for a dinner on June 15th Tuesday. Usually I prefer not to go this as the transit takes more than an hour. Anyways I've heard of this place, but never tried South Castle in the past. I liked how it was quiet and the social distancing was followed in the restaurant. FYI the Korean menu and the English menu (via QR code) are different. We ordered Mak Geolli pitcher, Makchang (intestines $21.99 from Korean menu), Yang Gopchang(another type of intestine $20.99) and Yeolmoo Milmyun ($12.99). Mak Geoli was sweet and delicious. It kinda had this sour yogurt taste. Banchan (side dishes) were pretty good. There were pickled onions, Radish Kimchi and some fish cakes. Makchang and Yang Gopchang were pretty tasty. If I had to pick between the two Makchang had this really good chewy texture with buttery flavour,YUM! By the way, these two had same kind of sauce with different textures of meats. Milmyun was really good too. Very refreshing and flavourful. We enjoyed all the dishes and Makgeolli. Chestnut Makgeolli sounded really good, but it ran out. Staff was really helpful refilling our side dishes. Sometimes it was so hard to call her. Price isn't cheap and the portion is on the smaller side. South Castle is so worth it though. Better suited for beer drinkers or anyone who likes Korean bar food. Soondae Gook Bap (Korean blood sausage soup) is something I want to try on my next visit.

    Parking in front~

Austin Avenue reminds me of a suburban version of Kitsilano. You can drive down the street and come across dozens of restaurants of both sides. Parking is available in front of the restaurant, with a whopping 2 spots. I guess you can try the street too. The inside reminds me a little of many similar places downtown, with a ton of wood. The customers were also Korean, which is always a good sign. Speaking of signs, their specials board on the wall is solely in Korean. I suspect this is where you order sauteed grilled dog livers. Maybe someone can translate. For those who don't speak Korean, their English menu consists of a whopping 6 items. Yes, just 6. My friends and I checked the back of the menu, which was blank. In any case, we cleaned out half their menu today. They say that the quality of a Korean restaurant can be judged based on their little appetizer dishes. I must say this place had the best appies I've had in a LONG time. The dishes were fish cake (yes, meat), radish (extra crispy), and spicy squid. There was also a dish of their hand-made soy sauce (not sure what this means), as well as seaweed, though these last 2 items were meant for our hand-made tofu bowl. For rice they used some purple-looking variety. It was actually quite good as it had a distinct flavour. Bul-Go-Gi - bubbling bot. Lots of onions and green onions. Delicious soup. Beef was cooked just right. Sun-Du-Bu (hand-made soft tofu) - nice and fluffy. Actually quite pleasant, though it was superbland. However, the waitress did mention that this dish was designed to be eaten with that hand-made soy sauce. This makes all the difference. There's some extra flavouring inside. It's not your typical Kikkoman. Bu-Chu-Jeon (seafood pancake) - tasted kind of bland. This may not be the fault of the restaurant, as my friend couldn't eat spicy so they did specifically tone it down. My friends complained there was too much vegetables but I didn't feel that way. What I CAN say though is that the pieces of seafood, while plentiful, were ground down a bit too much. The pieces were the size of Nerds (the candy). Overall I was quite happy with the food and service, and didn't feel ripped off for once. The final bill came to $32.xx. Not bad at all for 3 people. Great taste, great value. Recommended.

A roomie area but gives you a home vibe, feels like a large living room. This place delivers appetizing little sides and traditional home cooking Korean food. Their small menu is very warm and delicious, they've mastered everything on their. This is the best seafood sundubu I've had outside of korea so far, they also make their tofu fresh and in house which I find very neat and I enjoy the purple rice. The service is quick and welcoming. This is a must try place for traditional home cooking korean type foods.

I always go for the GamJanTang! Can't go wrong with the food. Parking can be a bit of a hassle. The restaurant is super cozy and they are good with soup base Korean food mostly! Bulgogi set was fine (very good portion). GamJaTang is definitely my favorite!

I'd like to say that they are an authentic Korean restaurant because all the staff is Korean and most customers (I hear the language when they talk among themselves). They are friendly and have an English menu, though, so don't be discouraged if you're not/don't speak Korean! :) The food is yummy! ! They bring you first some sides of kimchi, "fish cake", little bowl of rice and another picked something. .. The dishes are mostly soup bowls with tofu, beef and/or veggies. *beware of heat*: if it's red, it's a sign of evil (which some can take better than others). But they have a little red pepper icon on the menu as a warning for the dishes in question. Service is pleasant and doesn't take very long. It's a nice experience!

First visit, non Korean native speaker, Loved it! Service was pleasant. Staff gave us tea then menu and took our orders. Asked us if we needed more tea refills. Food: delicious and nowadays hard to find such good value for your dollar! Thumbs up for these guys! The soups were rich and flavorful, packed with meats and veggies. The potato pancakes were handmade and tasted the texture of the shredded potato and crispiness of the dough. Amazing!

Visited here for lunch on CHRISTMAS! Yea.. I didn't expect myself eating Soondae gookbab () on Christmas, but it happened... due to excessive alcohol consumption a day before LOL. N and I ordered SoonDaeGookBab and Gamjatang . It's rare to see any restaurants selling soondaegookbab in Vancouver although it's a pretty common dish in Korea. So I was glad that South Castle specializes in this type of hang-over food. Compared to the ones I had in Korea, the taste was just average. Soondaegookbab broth was a bit bland, but gamjatang was pretty rich in flavours. I might come back to try their soondae later! Food 3.0/5.0 Ambience 2.0/5.0 Service 3.5/5.0 Price $

Nice Korean food that you would expect only from an unknown aisle in Seoul. Great experience and very friendly staff. Will definitely go back for more authentic korean food.

I don't have too much experience with Korean food but it definitely what I need on a cold rainy day. The little side kimchi and fish cake sides were my favorite of it all :) Not to mention it was filled with Korean people which must be a good thing!

Soondae (korean sausage) was best i've had. It's hidden in suburbs of vancouver bc. Parking is limited and service could use a smile. but this place hits the right spot on a rainy.....and sunny day.

This place, tucked away just 5 minutes' driving distance from Coquitlam Centre, is clearly beloved by the local Korean community. The portion sizes are generous. They are perfect for sharing with family or friends. We saw many families and younger groups dining in, which gave it a cozy, homey vibe. We can taste the love and comfort in every bite. Here's what we ordered: * Beef Tartare Bibimbap - Not your typical bibimbap! The raw beef was beautifully seasoned and full of flavour. This was hands down our favourite dish! * Naengmyeon - Cold noodles in a super refreshing broth. Perfectly chewy with a balanced, savoury tang. A must-have on a hot day. * Japchae - Excellent portion, great price. The noodles were springy and not greasy at all--just the right balance of flavour. Great value, quality ingredients, and authentic flavours--Hansol is definitely going on our go-to list whenever we're craving comforting Korean food. We ordered short rib BBQ, Beef tartare Bibimbap, and original-flavor deep-fried chicken wings. Beef tartare Bibimbap was served in a hot stone bowl with a variety of vegetables on top of the rice. The gochujang sauce was served separately, allowing us to adjust the spiciness to our preference. It was a pretty good dish. The short rib BBQ was very tender and nicely seasoned. It was slightly on the sweeter side, very delicious. I will definitely order it again. The original flavor deep-fried chicken wings were served fresh and hot. They were incredibly crunchy on the outside and juicy on the inside--very good! Next time, I should order them with a flavored seasoning, as I already knew the original version was cooked with less saltiness, meant to be paired with a sauce. Overall, I really like this restaurant. The food tasted good, and the most notable point was the reasonable price! It was a very good deal, and it has now become one of my regular go-to places.

Staff are friendly but understaffed. Once the place filled up they were swamped. Signature steamed seafood pot - definitely on the pricey side, but they don't skimp out. Special mention for the presentation. Plenty of goodies including an entire lobster, half a large octopus (tenticle/arm half), snails, oysters, scallops, prawns, and fish balls among others. Basically everything without fish. Served in a large tray (the ones seen at banquet buffets), and everything cooked in broth. This was enough to probably feed 4-5 adults (assuming average appetites). So pretty. Deep fried squid with fries - honestly this dish was meh. Basically exactly what it sounds like. Squid is tempura style. Nothing special. I'd skip this one. Bossam (pork belly wraps) - served with tofu and spicy kimchi and some vegetable (kelp?) as well. They don't really give enough wraps compared to the pork slices. Decent portion size. My friends and I gobbled this up. This place also serves makgeolli (Korean rice wine) for a very reasonable price. Goes well with the food. Overall my friends and I left happy. Wouldn't mind coming back at some point to try some other dishes. Recommended.

We ordered 2 of the combo A which was the perfect servings for 2 adults and 3 (very hungry!) teenaged boys. Not only did it come with 3 meat types (thinly sliced pork belly, marinated beef Bulgogi, and one other thinly sliced beef), it also came with soup, banchan, and a big bowl of Bibimbap. We also ordered their seafood pancake which was perfectly crispy and not too thin or thick. The actual bbq grill itself was the best one I've seen at a Korean restaurant because it was non-stick, temperature controlled really well, and it didn't leave us smelling like the food after dining. The ventilation must've been good here as it wasn't super smoky at all. The best dish was definitely the bean paste soup! We all loved it and had never tried it before, so next time we have Korean, it will be a staple in our order! It wasn't too busy last night so we were seated right away. Staff were friendly and while they were short-staffed, they were quick enough to get what we requested and ordered in a timely manner.
