Really solid korean place named after their specialty dish. The Zzhusam is a must-try. There are a few different variations, but the gist is the same: spicy stir fried protein and rice cakes. You will not be dissapointed no matter what you choose. I had enough sauce left over when I was finished to take home and make some rice cakes myself the next day for lunch. There are lots of good food in the Edmonds area. We had Korean food with my sis and BIL and it was oh so very spicy I am so glad we ordered the honey garlic fried chicken. The sweet fried chicken definitely helps with the spicy food. We ordered a small chicken and octopus hot plate. We picked mild for spiciness but it was way too spicy for me. I was sweating like a pig We also ordered pork bone soup which is still spicy but less spicy than the hot plate. We saved the two bowl of rice and cook it on the hot plate. My sis's attempted to make crispy bottom rice but there were too much sauce so it didn't really crisp up in the end. Vancouver is home to so much good food and this Korean spot is no exception. It's not big and looks a little dark from the outside but the inside is hustling and bustling with people! The jjusami here is so delicious and portions are really solid. Was here with my parents and we polished it off with some extra rice. We also ordered seolleongtang on the side and it was great to cut the spice and sweetness with. The jjusami also comes with a bowl of bean sprout soup that is a great compliment, but we were very glad that we got both types of soup. I'm also just a soup gal so I can't go wrong with more. Randomly found this korean place and thought of trying as i could see that it was packed. (Which generally means food is delicious) After 5 minutes wait, me and my friend got seat so while we were waiting, we saw pictures of two menu items that looked interesting so we ordered them. 1. Seafood pancake - God or the cook in the kitchen knows what batter was used to make the pancake but it was an art. The way seafood was cooked with onions and vegetables and then turned into a flat pancake was very interesting but it also tasted yummy. Not spicy or over salty. Crispy and crunchy . Small prawns were falling out while eating and basically they were steamed. 2. The other was an octopus and chicken dish which was not curry. Perfect spices and again not spicy as we asked them that way but you can get ur own spice level. The salad on side was pickled , tangy and flavour full We were so full to try anything. My Girlfriend introduced me to this place awhile back and has always been a favourite of ours to frequent. We usually do the soups, but since it's summer we decided to do their Specialty Stir Fry. We got the Pork and the Octopus and chased it down with some Traditional Korean Rice Wine called Makgeolli. The Pork and octopus are tender and when simmered in the hot, sweet, spicy sauce it pairs so well. The Makegeolli is also quite nice! It's a bit nutty and has that fermented rice taste also similar to rice cakes you can find in asian bakeries. Love this place and will be coming back often. read more

I've been to many Korean restaurants but this one hits a bit different. The flavors taste like your grandma made it! Hard to explain you just have to try! We ordered the spicy intestines with glass noodles (extra spicy for me). My friend had the japjae. Both were delicious and well portioned. Another great Korean place along the stretch of Edmonds. Parking is available on the side streets. The inside is typical Korean style with some wood paneling and dated soju posters. Staff were friendly. Appetizers - potato chunks in sweet sauce, kimchi, and turnip and onion slices in sweet sauce. M1 spicy octopus with pork - the medium size is good for 2-3 people. Add fried rice for a few dollars more. I've been told to skip the cheese option. The mild option is probably medium to hot by North American standards. In other words, this is awesome. Guess I'll be trying medium spicy next time. The rice is added after a chunk of the main dish is eaten, to soak up the sauces. A wee bit pricey to be honest, but the food sure is tasty. Friend's recommendation brought the three of us here to one of many Korean restaurants along Edmonds Street in Burnaby, BC. Ambiance of the place is your typical Korean style restaurant decorated with an abundance of wood paneling and Soju advertisement posters. Staple Korean appetizers arrived before our entrée: potato chunks in sweet sauce, fermented cabbage & turnip, and kimchi. Bean sprout and green onion soup was also served before our main dish. We ordered the M1. (Zzhussam) Spicy stir fried baby octopus and pork from the Main Hot Plate section. Decided to go with the medium portion as was told small is good for 2 people and the large is just right for 4 to 5 people. Judging from past experience in other Korean eateries and the menu tip *Eating bean sprouts can cool the spicy flavours* the consensus was to choose mild spiciness. Added 2 side portions of fried rice to be mixed with the stir fry at the halfway point of the meal to obtain satiety. Overall the meal was tasty, we were all able to savor all the ingredients of the dishes without the spice drowning out it's true flavours. A bit pricey in my opinion, but will be back to enjoy their other offerings. There was only one waitress / cashier present to serve dine in customers and handle take out orders. We had ordered the japchae, bulgogi and ox tail soup for two people. It was more food that we could eat as the portions are a decent size plus we didn't want to stuff ourselves. The bulgogi tasted better than some other places as it seemed more fresh and the flavors were balanced. Some places just drench the beef with sauce so you kind of lose the beef flavor. The ox tail soup was good as it was something my girlfriend wanted as she likes her soups. It wasn't bland or salty and the meat was tender. It was light so you don't feel like you just had an overwhelming or intense soup but something that makes you feel like a good wholesome soup. She always has homemade soup so it satisfied the need for a soup. I really liked the japchae because it has a lot of items in it. The mixture of vegetables, meat and noodles was good. One of the many Korean restaurants located in the Edmunds neighbourhood of Burnaby, we came here for take out on a Saturday night and found that it was quite busy. We got the LA Galbi, Bulgogi Deopbap, Jeyuk Deopbap, and the Seafood Pancake. The LA Galbi and the Bulgogi were both marinated well and tasty and the portions were quite large. The seafood pancake, on the other hand, I wasn't a big fan of. It was quite thick when normally it would be quite thin and felt more like a pizza than a pancake. This place is not holding back on the spicy level at all! It's one of the most spicy dishes I have ever had in Vancouver and I can do the Spicy Ramen noddle challenge, no problem. The food itselft and the portion are very good actually. We ordered medium size chicken and baby , LA galbi and steamed egg. The octopus tastes fresh which is a plus as not many restaurant knows how to treat octopus . This is the spot to go to when you're craving spicy baby octopus and chicken! They have three spiciness levels mild/medium/spicy. Their dishes definitely have a kick to it so if you can't handle spicy, just stick with mild. The octopus and chicken is our go to because you can't really go wrong with chicken or octopus. This friendly neighbourhood Korean place is a gem. It's not too well known as it's located on Edmond Street, in a location very easy to pass up when you're driving or bussing. Regardless, this is one of my favorite Korean places. I was here with a friend and ordered the small Zzhu Ko Ko ($32), which is spicy stir fried octopus and chicken. The "small" is enough for 2 people, as in you don't need to order anything else on the menu and having this alone is filling enough. However, everything else on the menu looked great as well... It also comes with bean sprout soup which is quite a treat. The pot contained vermicelli and even two prawns (bonus!) in addition to the octopus and chicken. The good thing about it is your food is always scorching hot, as in the hot plate is heated underneath with flame (also fun to watch). However, do stir your food or it will BURN. You can always ask the staff to put out the flame if your food is burning. Their normal spicy is extremely spicy for the general population. Hence, if you're not a big fan of spicy, ask for MILD or your taste buds will be toasted. This is one of the few places that actually makes food spicy enough for my liking. If you really don't eat spicy, pick the non-spicy options. Overall the store is clean, the staff is kind, and do pick up a free candy on a way out to sooth your burned taste buds. read more

Cheaply made and not done the right way. I suppose if you aren't Korean or don't really know Korean food you might enjoy their food, but I am neither. I ordered the yukgaejang (spicy beef soup) and ttukbukke (spicy rice cake) w/ramen for my husband. The beef soup is supposed to be made with brisket but instead just had some cheap cuts of stew beef in it. The spicy rice cake was more sweet than spicy . It never surprises me how often restaurants come and go... it's a tough business, especially in a fickle place like Vancouver. I was driving by the Edmonds area of Burnaby last December when I noticed that a new restaurant had recently replaced Lui's Chinese Restaurant. The thing that really caught my eye was the name of the new restaurant... Oh! Zzhu Sam Korean Restaurant. I'm sure the name has something to do with the food they serve... probably related to the picture of the baby octopus in their logo. The interior of this restaurant has been cleaned up a bit since the last time I've been here. On my first visit, I ordered the Dolsot Bibimbap ($13) which arrived with a selection of banchan including potatoes, bean sprouts, and kimchi. The thing that I like about dolsot bibimbap is how the rice gets crispy on the bottom of the hot bowl. It was a pretty good version with shiitake mushrooms, carrots, cucumbers, bean sprouts, tasty beef and topped with an egg yolk. Just pour some of that hot sauce on top and mix it all up for a great tasting rice bowl. I came back for a revisit the following week when it was freezing out so I opted for a hot bowl of Galbi Tang ($10). This is a soup made with beef short ribs, egg, onions radish, enoki mushrooms, and glass noodles. It was served boiling hot, as most Korean soups are, and had plenty of beef attached to the bones. It was a good option to keeping warm during the winter. The banchan were slightly different this time and included potatoes, kimchi, and pickled veggies.. I returned for a revisit about 3 months later and opted for their $9.50 lumch special... Bulgogi Deopbap or Beef Bulgogi on Rice. The dish also contained rice cakes, onions, glass noodles, carrots, cucumbers, and chives. I really enjoyed the rice cakes in this dish but felt like the beef needed a bit more flavour. So far, the items I've tried have been pretty spot on... might want to come back here and try some of their octopus dishes. read more

Oh! Zzhu Sam is just outside my house so I was extremely excited that a Korean restaurant had opened up so close to home as I usually have to go out further to satisfy my cravings. I usually do take out and order the Cheese Tteok-Bokki, which is a spicy rice cake dish, and a bulgogi deopbap, a dish with bulgogi and rice. While the tteok-bokki was tasty, I found the bulgogi deopbap was quite average. It came with a few sides but the bulgogi came out to be very dry from the two times that I have ordered it, which is why I'm giving an overall review of 4/5. Otherwise I can't say much about this place just yet even though it's so close by as I haven't actually sat in the restaurant and have only ordered the same two things twice.
