Kimchi pancake (hot!)
Sandra L.

Our current favourite non-bbq Korean restaurant in Richmond! Chill K-pop, flavourful foods and friendly staff all make for an awesome dining experience. True the portions might be smaller than similar restos but the great taste and generous ingredients more than make up for it. One minor annoyance is the ample amount of smoke coming out from the kitchen which is somewhat distracting. No biggie as we'll just pretend we're having Korean BBQ ^_^

Grub: Japchae (stir-fried glass noodles with mixed vegetables and beef) I found this dish was too oily. Seafood Pancake Pretty good, and quite crispy REPEAT Fillable Dish (maximum twice) Potatoes, Broccoli, and Kimchi pretty good usually korean places have these dishes to refill 2-3 times, but from experience, up to maximum twice. REPEAT because it comes with whatever you order, yummy! Lineup: about 5-10 minutes wait I recommend this restaurant if you are craving Korean food.

Nice pot of Korean Barley Tea

This is a very popular Korean eatery near my neighbourhood, they have been busy since the first day they opened their door, and I have consciously stayed away to avoid the crowd. After doing some housework & yard work to get ready for summer, I got lazy to make dinner, and thought it would be a great opportunity to try out Daan, since its only 5:00pm, I hope there is no line up yet! Arriving at the restaurant, I was happy to see that there are only 2 tables with customers, the restaurant itself is very small but I really like their decor and set up, very clean & compact, good use of space. We decided to give their Gamjatang ( Pork Bone Soup ) a try, as this is a very popular dish to be shared. We checked with our very gracious server and she assured us that the small will be good for the 2 of us. After about 15mins. the soup came and the size is pretty substantial for a small size, ( they also have a larger size ). The restaurant uses Sterno to keep the soup warm, I would hope they use a proper gas stove in winter, as the Sterno heater will not be hot enough for a larger size pot and especially in winter. First sip of the soup: flavourful, but not substantial, it lacks the flavour of a rich pork bone stock that has been slow boiled to reach that stage, Daan's version is more of a lighter version. As we asked for "Spicy" I see that they have added extra jalapeños both chopped and sliced on top of the bones. I have to say the pork bones themselves are cooked to perfection but the potatoes need at least 15 more minutes as its still hard in the centre. Banchan comes in a small dish with 3 varieties, the best tasting is the stewed potatoes, I find the Kimchee a tad on the salty side and the Sukjunamul-muchim lacks seasoning. Overall, I would see this as a good neighbourhood eatery, if you are lazy that day to make lunch or dinner, come and enjoy the clean and neat interior and have some home style Korean meal at a very reasonable price!!

Spicy seafood tofu soup

My go-to Korean dish to order is spicy seafood tofu soup. This is my second time here and the Korean food at Daan is solid. However the nook is a bit cramped as that is where I was sitting that day. The server could barely get passed me with her cart. We also noticed a piece of hair in our side dishes. I'm not sure if they are already using hairnets in the kitchen. I wish that our next experience will be more comfortable.

I ordered takeout from Daan through their online ordering system! It was a very smooth process; the website was easy to navigate and (if it's still there) you can get 10% off all takeout when ordering online! Pick-up was covid friendly :) For 2 people, we ordered 3 things and had a little bit of leftovers; paid ~$40CAD -Bossam (small): boiled pork belly that you can wrap in steamed nappa cabbage and put these different toppings on it (such as kimchi, garlic slices, soybean sauce thing)! My favorite dish we ordered! So much flavor and goodness in this and I really enjoyed the process of putting each bite together -Sweet & Spicy fried chicken wings: if I had these fresh, I'm sure they would have been even better! There is SO much flavor and spiciness to this- definitely worth getting. -Seafood Tofu soup: this was a tad too salty for me but I was happily surprised to find the seafood flavor shine through so well! Overall I would definitely recommend this for korean food down in the richmond area! Can't wait to try some of their other dishes sometime soon.

We visited Daan for a late dinner on a Monday and it wasn't very busy. The seafood pancake was a bit on the thicker side for me but still tasty with a good crunchy exterior. The seafood tofu soup was surprisingly good! The bulgogi was pretty tasty as well with thin slices of flavourful beef. The only item that wasn't as great as I expected were the spicy boneless chicken balls. These had a good flavour to them but too much breading and filler and not much chicken inside which was disappointing. I'd pass on this next time.

So I've been meaning to try Da'an since it opened last year. I did go by a few times and there was a line up and because there are a lot of other options on the area I haven't had a chance to give it a shot. Well today I decided I'm going to order take out (15% off at the moment) and I'm so glad I did. The staff was efficient the food was awesome. We ordered the KFC sweet & spicy, kimchi pancake, beef bulgogi and beef bimi-bap. Wow hit the spot. Richmond is full of Asian restaurants but very few Korean joints. If your craving Asian food and want to deviate from the local staples then Da'an is for you. If you haven't tried Korean food this is good place to start. The flavour profiles are generally sweet and slightly spicy with hints of sesame . Believe me the combo is excellent.

Seafood pancake (small)

We came in for lunch today for dine-in. Service was a bit slow, but I can see the reason due to many take out orders. Food portion to prices value is reasonable. However, most of the food we ordered are not to our taste. Maybe some people will like it but we have had better ones before. Pork bones and potato hotpot (s) - not cheap. There are about 5 to 6 pieces in our pot and lots of potato. Soup was a bit bland, and I noticed they used normal napa cabbage for the soup instead of the old kimchi. I feel there is a taste less. Seafood pancake (s) - portion size is good. Small ones can definitely fit for two people or even three. A bit greasy. Soy garlic boneless chicken - breading was too thick for my liking and sauce was too sweet. We eat this dish at the restaurant but it's already feel very soggy. I wouldn't order it again for next time. Maybe I shouldn't have too much expectations before I come in. Even though it's not the best we had but still a good option for the neighborhood.

Beef Bibimbap ($13.99), Kimchi Pancake ($9.99), Spicy Korean Fried Chicken ($8.99)
Rency L.

Craving Korean food? Make a trip to Daan Korean Cuisine! I've been meaning to find a good Korean spot in Richmond and was so impressed by Daan. I ordered the spicy Korean fried chicken, kimchi pancake, and beef bibimbap. Spicy KFC ($8.99) Tender and juicy chicken balls with a lingering taste of fiery spice. Kimchi pancake ($9.99) Thin and crispy kimchi pancake that makes you want to come back for more! Beef bibimbap ($13.99) Stone bowl bibimbap is definitely a must-order! Aromas of beef, carrots, bean sprouts, zucchini, radish, spinach, and seaweed. It's served with gochujang - a delicious spicy Korean paste that is paired so well with the rice. The price is extremely good for the portions - and Daan is currently offering 10% on all takeout orders! The store is small but cozy, perfect for a casual lunch or dinner. Daan Korean Cuisine is a quiet, jewel-box of a restaurant where you'll find yourself immersed in the tastes of Korea.

This gel thing is lit with a lighter that warms your hot pot instead of using propane. So cool!

I love Korean food and we have our favourite/go-to place here in Richmond. However, when this place opened up (which happens to be closer to our house), we couldn't resist. We ordered the combo meal for 4 people which included japchae, bbq ribs (kalbi), pork bone stew, seafood pancake, and a green salad. Everything was just ok except for the pork bone stew. We've actually never tried this soup before, but man, we fell in love with it!! The flavour of the broth was sooo good and the more we ate it, the more we wanted it! I highly recommend it. I would actually rate this place higher just for the pork bone stew, but I need to give an overall review of what we ordered and our experience. We didn't have any issues with the service -- the staff were nice and attended to our needs when we needed something. It's just that the rest of the food was not as great -- just ok. But I would definitely come back here just for the soup!

Royal rice cake (douboki) is flavorful.
J K.

Royal rice cake (douboki) is so flavorful. There onions, kobuto squash, zucchini, bell peppers, ear wood mushrooms, rice cake and bulgogi. It was heavy on the white pepper. Liked it a lot. I was told seafood pancake was good and crispy. DS devoured his stone bibimbap. Honey soy garlic chicken wings were temperature hot coming out and sweet. If u like it sweet and crispy this is for you.

Mandy C.

Update: enjoyed my take out with 15% off during this pandemic season. I highly recommend the bibimbap and the mackerel. Still have some crunch when we got home! Support local small business! ---------------------------- I had high expectation before coming as I saw people's pork bone hotpot looks so good. But we didn't have enough people to order the big portion so we didn't try that. I think the food still tastes good, but really the food was served too hot. The tofu pot was literally boiling when it arrived. The pancake was also very hot. So it got hard to tell the taste the first few bites. The kimchi udon was also very spicy. So did their kimchi in their side dish. I had only had kimchi udon in Korean ran Japanese sushi place before, so maybe Korean kimchi noodle is expected to be much spicier. We could only finish half of the dish. Probably need to cook a fresh udon to mix with the remaining half to tone down the spiciness. If we were to try again, definitely will go for something not spicy. /m

It is a small and unassuming restaurant but the food here is spectacular and service is also wonderful. Pictured down below is some of my biggest go to dishes. The seafood pancake is a must! It is very thick (thicker than a slice of pizza), very delicious, and filled with seafood variety. My favourite part however is the sauce. I have no idea what they put in it but it is sweet, sour, and pairs so nicely to cut the greasiness of the pancake. Next, I always choose to order a soup when I come to So Hyang. They have a great spicy tofu soup! This time around, we went for non-spicy soybean soup as my friend can't handle spice. It was still flavourful and hearty for the soul, especially on a cold day. Finally, my next favourite pick is the bossam or pork belly. The great thing about the pork belly here is that they come with a variety of sides. I like the varieties of pickled vegetables as well as the special shrimp krill mixture (that I can't recall the name of) that they don't serve all the time at other restaurants. The bossam is guaranteed to give you a satisfying flavour and texture explosion. These 3 dishes were enough to stuff my friend and I AND give us leftovers for another two people. Although the food came out to be $50 per person, it did not feel like a lot as we had so much left to take home. I hope everyone gets to try this wonderful place that holds a special spot in my foodie heart!

We got the spicy pork belly (with lettuce for wraps), the salt and oil beef rib fingers, and the fried rice which is cooked on the grill top. The staff cooks the meat for you on the grill. The rib fingers are tender, while the spicy pork belly make for a good lettuce wrap with the kimchi and bean sprouts they also put on the grill. To wrap it up, the fried rice is cooked after all of the meat, so the rice can soak up the flavors and grease from meat left on the grill. Pretty tasty overall. Also you get 8 banchans for table. Overall bill was little under $80, which was a little lower than I expected.
