    Assorted Tonkatsu Set
    Lisa K.

Waited about 45 minutes as it was during rush hour (we went around 7:30pm). Food was great with unlimited salad and rice. Katsu was delicious but will try only the pork katsu next time.

Show up before opening or wait minimum 30 minutes! We got so lucky showing up 6 min before opening and was the very last table to be seated in first seating. Wait time subsequently rose to 30-45 minutes and when we left it was 1 hr 15 min or more. So get there at least 10 min before especially if you dine in the weekend. We shared the assorted tonkatsu set which featured cheese katsu, pork katsu (tonkatsu), ebi (shrimp), alongside miso soup, cabbage, rice, and the other fixings. It's cool you can grind the sesame and have a choice of dipping in mayo or katsu sauce. Also, we added an egg for $2 (half egg, ripoff, skip skip), and hotate (scallop) - nicely battered, fresh, and sweet. I'd recommend eating the cheese katsu first thing to fully enjoy the melted cheese texture. The pork katsu is solid - the meat is quite juicy. The shrimp is huge and fresh. I docked a star off because of the service. The place is small and it's Japanese food so I expected a bit better service. When we chose to share the set, they called out they won't honor unlimited cabbage, rice, and soup, unless we specifically order 2 sets, despite us ordering extras that are close to the price of the cheapest set. Also, it takes a while to flag down a server to refill the hot tea. It's still a decent experience, but I would've been unhappy if I waited more than 30 minutes for a table because while the katsu is delicious, it's not impressive compared to other katsu spots to wait such a long time.

This is a definitely must-try in Richmond for katsu and definitely the best in Richmond and one of the best in the metro Vancouver. As this place is famous, it took a while of waiting time during lunch time. I was told to expect 45min wait but eventually I waited for 30min, that's not bad. They offer ample of choice I. The menu and basically you won't regret to pick any katsu set. Pork katsu and cheese katsu set would be the choice for the first time visitors. The katsu are made to order so they were freshly fried and serve. Unlimited supply of miso soup, rice and sliced cabbage. The quality was great and maintained. Compared to their rival in Richmond, the price performance is definitely better. The restaurant has limited seats and tables are packed. It is always better to reserve a table.

Haven't been back in 5 years! Everything was still as good as I remembered. The tonkatsu was hot and crispy. We waited about 40mins for a group of 4. The Ebi Hotate Katsu set came with huge crispy tiger prawns! Service was good as they do come over a few times to ask if you need more soup, salad or rice. You can also add a small side of curry for $4! It was actually a great way to change things up.

I have been here twice and it always hits the spot! I love how thinly sliced the cabbage along with the crispy and juciy flavor of the pork katsu. The size is just right making sure you leave full with unlimited amounts of rice and cabbage. There is no doubt I will be back again!

Ordered delivery with my friends as this was the only katsu joint that delivered cheese katsu. I got the chicken katsu and I really enjoyed it, I liked that there was alot of sides. The cabbage salad was a bit watery and I wasn't huge on the dressing but it was still good. I do wish they gave more tonkatsu sauce but overall I enjoyed my meal and would love to visit in person.

The food here is very good. Just not a fan of all the waiting. If you can call ahead of time and make a reservation, I highly recommend doing that. We waited about an hour to get a table, and then waited some more to get our food once we finally ordered. We were given mortar and pestle to grind sesame seeds into powder. This is something that was done in Japan as well when we there for a tonkatsu meal earlier this year. They did this at Saku restaurant as well. For some reason, I felt like it was harder to grind the sesame seeds here than it was in Japan. Maybe I just had less energy for it since we'd been waiting well over an hour and a half already, and my body needed food. Our daughter loves her cheese katsu. Seemed like she preferred the one from Saku though over this one. This place is more affordable though, and as for the rest of the katsu dishes that did not have cheese on them...I think the quality of the katsu is better here than Saku. Hubby said the chicken katsu was kinda "meh" but everything else was better here than at Saku. While the quality here is better, I do wish they would have a vegetarian option on the menu here. That is one thing I prefer at Saku. Here I have to settle for Ebi Hotate option which is prawn and scallops. As a pescatarian, seafood does work for me. I generally prefer vegetarian options though when they are available.

Katsu San was a highly anticipated restaurant on my list during my trip to Canada. Although the aesthetics of my meal looked amazing, I was a bit disappointed. The cheese in the cheese katsu was very stringy and made great for instagram videos for the cheese pull, but the taste was just a bit bland. Otherwise everything else in my bento was decent. The curry sauce add on I ordered was delicious! It really hit the spot, and since the cabbage, rice and pickles were "endless", I took a bit of advantage to get my fill of rice and curry as it was a large portion of sauce. Service was a bit slow and there seemed to be an issue with card payments (wifi not working?) I had only found out because someone at my table overheard the staff and another table who happened to be waiting there for a while after they finished their meal to pay (but couldn't because they only had card) I asked for the check and they didn't say anything directly to us (just never brought the bill) which I thought was bad communication, since I had cash I could've also paid with. Luckily I had shouted I had cash across the restaurant to the staff, they finally brought us the check, we paid and left shortly after. Staff worker seemed a bit shy or new.

Had to wait almost 1.5 hours to get seated for a group of 2, but it was worth it. I ordered assorted tonkatsu set. Pork was crispy outside and tender inside. The prawn was good too, not mushy, crispy and well cooked. Not super big far for the cheese ones as it's just cheese. Next time I'll get the pork only. Unlimited soup, rice and cabbage. I think they changed the apple salad dressing recipe, it's a bit more tart, still good tho.

We waited about 45 mins on a Saturday night for two people, I do not think they take reservations for a group under 6. The wait was worth it and I think very fair priced. We ordered the tonkatsu set and the assorted set. If you want to give the ebi, cheese, pork or chicken katsu tempura a try, I would recommend the assorted set. The cheese one was sooo good and I loved how crispy each of the batters were. Definitely would come back if we're in town.

There's many good eats in every nook and cranny around the Richmond area and Katsu San was our newest find! First off if you go on the weekend like we did the line up starts about 30 minutes before they open to ensure you get in on that first wave. Otherwise be prepared to wait about an hour and 30 minutes for a table at this highly popular eatery. We ordered the assorted set that came with a katsu pork loin, one ebi "tempura" katsu and two pieces of cheese katsu. We also had the ebi katsu set and the pork loin set plus the ramen choices intrigued so we all split the Ra-Yu Champon spicy ramen which came loaded with al dente noodles, veggies, tamago, pork belly and seafood. The pork loin katsu had a nice panko texture and the pork was tender and juicy. Our servers were great and the interior design was modern with a nice ambiance. Will definitely put this on the "must go" again to try more yummy dishes!

While visiting Canada, we wanted to try this spot because they had the cheese Katsu. We called in the day before to order Togo, but they don't do Togo orders for Katsu San assorted (cheese, pork, Ebi, etc.). And for the wait to eat in is 1 1/2 hr at 1:30pm and they closed at 3pm and reopened around 5pm. So, we opted to eat the next day. We arrived at the restaurant 30 mins before the restaurant open and sat people lining up area. By the time, the restaurant opened their door every single table was filled and people were being put on the waiting list. It took some time to get our food out because we were the first group to get in. I ordered an Asahi beer while waiting for my Katsu San assorted bento box to come out. Finally got our food. Definitely had to try the cheese first before it gets cold. The cheese Katsu was cheesy, but disappointingly bland. I had to dipped it in the mayo for some flavor. The pork was okay and there was a dipping sauce for that as well. The Ebi was the best for me by itself or dipped into the salt which enhanced the Ebi taste. The cabbage is refillable and tasted okay. The cabbage lacks a crispy crunchy texture. Possibly because it was slice thin. However, it was still good paired with the roasted sesame seasoning. It was nice to end the meal with the hot tea (refillable too) and miso soup on a cold rainy day.

Worth the wait! Arrived a few minutes before opening on Saturday but wasn't able to get seated in the first round. Waited 40 minutes to be seated and ordered the pork and seafood katsu sets. The food was very authentic and friend perfectly. It was a great meal and service was really nice.

We sat in a separate section of the restaurant with 3 tables at the front. We ordered chicken wings, assorted tempura, miso black cod and an order of beef teriyaki that was not on the menu. The servings are very small for the prices charged. We found that the chicken wings (only 4 small wings) $9.50 were a bit dry. The tempura batter was not as crisp or crunchy as we've had. The miso black cod was a very small portion - maybe 4 oz. for $18.00. We did not feel that there was value for the money.
