Came here on a rainy day. They offered either water or barley tea. I love barley tea, and it was very comforting during the dreary weather. We were quite hungry, and asked for advice regarding sizes, and were advised to order the following for 2: -Pork Tang Su Yuk (Large: 39.00$): Comes served with a thick, syrupy, sweet and sour sauce on the side. The sauce contains some fresh produce such as cabbage and onions, which is quite nice and refreshing, and cuts through the sauce, providing a different flavour in addition to the fried umami of the pork. I appreciate that the sauce comes served on the side, because I like my food CrUnCHy -Ja Jang Myun (Regular: 13.50$): It was tasty, very onion forward (which I LOVE). My only comment was that I was expecting the sauce to have little pieces of pork in it, and I personally did not detect any, which translated to a bit of a superfluous sauce. Afterwards I checked the menu, and it does say that there is minced pork in the sauce, so I'm not sure... This was more than enough food for 2 people (we got leftovers to take home), and I think the perfect amount of food for 3. I appreciate good portion sizes. Additionally, they served yellow radish, and kimchi radish cubes with it, and had vinegar, soy sauce, and red pepper powder at every table. Only went to this restaurant one other time but remembered loving the food here, so decided to come back here again. Especially when I saw Omurice on the menu. I was pretty sure that my daughter would jump at the chance to have Omurice and I was absolutely right about it! I'm not sure if they normally use any kind of meat or meat broth in their Omurice. It's not listed on the menu, so I inquired about making the dish Vegetarian. The waitress asked if I was OK with egg. Seems like a lot of people don't really understand the difference between vegetarian and vegan. If I were asking for a vegan dish...well there's just no way I could eat the dish as the egg is the "Omu" part of the dish and therefore the main attraction. I got the point across though that I just didn't want any chunks of meat or meat broth used in the dish. (It was my daughter's dish mainly but I wanted to try it, and she's fine with eating vegetarian foods even though she does still eat meat.) It was a really yummy Omurice and I think we may have just found a new favourite of ours on the North Shore! I ordered the same vegetarian Jab Chae Rice that I ordered last time and it was just as good as I remembered it. It really puzzles me though that this dish is listed under the Rice section. It does come with a bowl of white rice but it's a freakin huge platter of noodles and the noodles are really the main star of the dish...not the rice! Grandma ordered the Sam Sun Stir Fried Rice which is supposed to be a Seafood fried rice with vegetables and pork in black bean sauce, topped with a fried egg. She wasn't too impressed with this dish and honestly...I guess I can't really blame her for it. In my last review I wrote that you can't really go wrong with any dish on this menu. I take that back now. I think this is probably the first dish we've tried here that was less than stellar. There was a lot of rice in the dish, and barely any seafood in the rice. The black bean sauce was...nothing to write home about? Other than the underwhelming Sam Sun Stir Fried Rice though, I still give this place a thumbs up and would still highly recommend coming here. If you are a vegetarian, don't bother. I ordered the uni jajan myun which mentioned a vegetarian option. I was given the black bean gravy with onions. There wasn't even a tofu. Spent a lot of money on onion broth with noodles, with 15% tip for take out. read more

The food was extremely tasty, it's true, Korean food, I ordered jajangmyeon but also fried chicken, too. Great service, and they even had green tea, It's a nice touch, it's not hard to see. However, I do wish for some appetizers to munch, But the main dishes were excellent, such a crunch. Ga Hyang Ru, a 4-star rate, With food this good, i'd give it an 8. You have to first beware that this is a Korean Chinese place, not just straight up Korean. The fried chicken is tasty but it is more like Chinese style ie like lemon chicken rather than KFC style. The jja Jang myun is definitely the bomb here. Very rich, full black sauce, generous amount of onions. Both the omelette rice and kimchi fried rice are quite good too. Portions are quite good. This lovely restaurant locates in the corner of Lonsdale and 12th W St. My first impression is the friendliness of the owner and staffs. They are so bubbly and welcoming. I ordered deep fried chicken, spicy black bean noodle and kimchi fried rice. The everage price is $12 (for regular size). The portion is huge that I ended up taking home 3 to-go boxes. Kimchi fried rice is ok but the other two dishes are superb, especially the fried chicken. The patio gets crowded by 7PM (store closed at 9PM). read more

Every time I'm in North Vancouver, I'll go here. It used to be another Korean restaurant called Ham Ji Bak. This place is comparable to that. Highly recommend. If only they have one closer to Richmond, Vancouver, and Burnaby. Koon Man Du ($13cad) is a deep fried dumplings with pork and vegetables. It has 10pcs. The dumplings were super delicious. It was perfectly fried. Must order item! The pork was flavourful. Ja Jang Myun (R: $8.90cad, L: $11.40cad) is a minced pork and vegetables with black bean sauce on noodles. This is also a must order dish here. The noodles were chewy and the black bean sauce tasted the way I thought it would be. This place has the best JJM so far. Kan Poong Ki (R: $20.50cad, L: $26.50cad) is a deep fried chicken with sweet and spicy sauce. For those who can't take spicy, you have been warned. The chicken was also perfectly fried and delicious as well. Overall, I love this place. Too bad it's far from where I live or I would come here regularly. The service is not the best, but I come here for the food only. It may take a few waving for them to actually notice you. The place is fairly clean. read more

We got a flat tire on our way to Whistler and found this restaurant on Yelp. We really love the food and the service. The Gan Ja Jang Myun was delicious!! The waitress was super nice and told us that they're constantly adjusting the recipe for the fresh noodles that they make in house. I'm hoping we can stop via on our way back. They said that the pork Tang Su Yuk is a classic celebration food in Korea. Hopefully we can get to try that before we leave! read more

Classic hole-in-the-wall that's a hidden gem! Seriously good dishes, large portions, and fast service. My boyfriend and I were really hungry and was looking for Korean food in North Vancouver. We found Ham Ji Bak and decided we were going to walk up from Lonsdale Quay. That was extremely foolish of us because it was an incline walk, and we were even more hungry and dehydrated than before. The Kanpoongki took a while to cook, but the wait was so worth it. It was so crispy and flavorful! My mapo tofu on the other hand was really disappointing because it was very bland. I'm being generous with my rating because prior to going to Canada for vacation, I became addicted to mapo tofu cooked szechuan style. Ham Ji Bak's mapo tofu was just tamed. We did end up coming back for more kanpoongki, and also got the pork version. The pork version was just as good but we were thrown off by some of the pieces that were undercooked, afterall it is pork. read more

This place is a big let down. We saw all the google reviews and thought we were in for an authentic Korean treat but boy, were we disappointed. First, the waitress didn't open our beers or even give us an opener. We had to rely on a lighter we had. We ordered: 1) The crispy shrimp in sweet sauce (looked perfectly crispy with a slight drizzle of sauce on the menu). When it arrived it was abhorrent. It was this massive ball of dough, uncooked in the middle, full of standard store bought Asian sweet chilli sauce. I mean your 12 year old can do this in a kitchen with half the ingredients and probably better. The kicker, they charged $32 for literally 5 prawns ! read more

The service was really good but I found the food to be very expensive, also the food we ordered the rice wasn't properly cooked and the main dish was just bland, I had to load up the Sriracha just to make it taste better. FAVORITE JJAJANGMYUN PLACE IN GREATER VANCOUVER!! Been coming here with my family for as long as I can remember! Jjajangmyun and tangsuyuk are comfort foods for me and I get pretty picky when it comes to the jjajangmyun. I've tried quite a few different places but I have yet to find a place I like better!! My first time having Korean, and I wasn't disappointed! It has a lot of noodle dishes, and they even brought you a pair of scissors to cut the noodles on your plate! I thought there would be Korean BBQ but this isn't that. I had a number 41 (stir fried vegetables pork and thin noodle on rice) it was pretty amazing, cooked with love for sure! My new favorite Korean restaurant. My wife found this place through a blog. It's easy to drive to and there's always parking. Kid friendly (high chair for toddler). Prices are great. Portions are large. Nothing fancy but good ol' Korean comfort food. The area is quiet and peaceful. This around-the-corner restaurant is great for families. Service was always courteous and prompt. This is good food, but below the standard I expect for Korean-style Chinese food. The jjajangmyeon (noodles with black bean sauce) was too salty, and the noodles were too soft and did not have that satisfying chewy texture that this dish is supposed to have. The jjambbong (spicy seafood soup with noodles) was not spicy enough, and even the one with extra seafood had too many filler ingredients (a lot of onions) that distracted from the seafood and noodles. If I was introducing someone to Korean-style Chinese food for the first time I would not take them here (try going downtown instead). However, if you happen to be in the area this place is ok. Another drawback is that it is a small restaurant and not a good place to bring a baby stroller. read more
