EDISON: located within the Raritan Center complex is an awesome brewery called South 40 Brewing Co. and they sure do love their doggy visitors. Leashed and friendly dogs are allowed inside the tap room (new since our last review) and outdoor seating, and they are becoming famous for hosting doggy birthday parties! Get featured on their "Top Dogs of South 40" wall and be part of a great group of pups. Oh, we almost forgot to talk about the beer. They have a nice variety in various sizes, including seltzer options, like the Happy Palmer, an iced tea lemonade flavor that is absolutely delicious and so easy to drink. The beertender, Jimmy, was so nice to talk to and his interesting career kept us enthralled. Had a great time a south 40 brewing this past weekend. The location itself is a bit hidden but once you walk in, you're greeted by friendly staff and you find yourself in a cozy brewery. They also have various events throughout the month and I was able to stay for one of the comedy shows they hosted which was pretty great. The beers were ok but the ambiance was better. I'd come back if they were hosting some other fun event or show again. read more

Seating inside is limited but there's plenty outside. As for the beers, none stood out to me which is a shame considering there was a large selection compared to other nearby breweries. We tried almost everything that was available but nothing was memorable. The IPAs were not as hoppy as one would expect. Awesome little brewery off the beaten path in Edison! This warehouse space was beautifully transformed into a microbrewery. All the details, big and small, are there. It feels extremely cozy and the bartender was very kind. Lots of games to pick from if you are staying for a few beers. South 40 offers different size pours ranging from 4 oz, 12 oz, and 16oz as well as flights and crowlers to go. We really enjoyed our time at this brewery and the beer! The blueberry lager is so light and refreshing. Harvey's Ale was also so unbelievably tasty. I couldn't believe how much caramel I was tasting - it was spot on. Thanks for a great time! read more

South 40 Brewing is a nice little place to hang out. As soon as I walked in, I was greeted and felt comfortable being there. I felt that my business was appreciated as well as my opinion. They are the 117th brewery I have visited in NJ alone. It's a small little place, and they have a tasting room side and a brewery side. But you can pretty much sit anywhere, and the owner does a good job at spacing everyone out and showing them where they can sit down. The decor of the place isn't anything extraordinary, and the supplies could be better organized in there. However, I know space is at a premium. The beers themselves are new, and it will take a little bit of time to perfect the formula. I did enjoy the double dry hopped IPA the best, and I was able to order a crowler to take home for the Super Bowl today. They are located in a large industrial park in Edison, New Jersey. You may think it's a little out-of-the-way to be there, but it's actually not. I was pleasantly surprised how close they were off the parkway. You can pretty much get there easily from almost anywhere in New Jersey because of the central location. So, I would recommend for people to go even if you may think it's a little far for you because it isn't. I'd go back. read more

"South 40 Brewing Co. is named after Route South 40, which, before 1958, was the name of the main road running into Long Beach Island, Pacansky's family's favorite vacation destination (The road is now Route 72). A mural inside the brewery, painted by a family friend, portrays the iconic road." From www.mycentraljersey.com article. This article explains how owner got into making beer after "a friend gave Kevin Pacansky a beer-making kit." Then it talks about his journey until he secured "the space, a 2,000-square-foot former Army ammunition depot, at the end of 2018." I had the pleasure of meeting Kevin on his grand opening day and he seems like a really nice guy. I give him and his staff a lot of credit for being able to open up this brewery during a pandemic year. South 40 is located in the Raritan Center area of Edison, its near Cypress Brewery but unfortunately its separated by the Thomas A. Edison Park so you have to go around to get to it. We visited on opening day and it was nice and spacious, they had live music and you can sit inside or outside. Hand sanitizers were available and staff were cleaning tables in between customers. I got a flight of beers for $10, my favorite was Simcoe's Baby (DIPA) ABV: 8.7%; Tropical, citrusy with a piney finish. I'm looking forward to trying some of his upcoming beers in production. I really wanted to love this place but there were different reasons why I couldn't. First, the positive highlights! The inside is clean and the staff was so friendly and kind. The beer, IMO, was overpriced and tasted watered down. The beer had a very, very light flavor and I felt as if I was waiting for the flavor to hit after taking a sip, but it never did. Other breweries in the area are priced $5-$7 for a pint that doesn't taste watered down. Beer was served in plastic cups (flights and pints). If I am paying $7-$8 for a beer I expect a glass. I would highly recommend investing in glasses. The bathroom was very clean but there was no changing table. Moms go to breweries too!! I don't want to hear anyone say "don't bring your baby then". I hope my feedback helps the owners to make changes because I want them to succeed! read more

Beer was very mediocre with flavoring not styles dominating the taps. Red Ale, Nut Brown Ale , Blackberry and a bunch I couldnt even understandstand. Nice Vibe inside and super friendly staff. Not one Noramal Kiolsch, wheat beer or pilsner to be found. The New bottled porter was over seasoned with botanicals and too much extract!! Food truck outside served semi frozen empinadas and undercooked corn cheese sticks that had to go into aifryer at home. We gotta do better than this Guys! Beuatiful set up with Shwag beer. read more

First time there yesterday. Plenty of space and good beer on tap. Definitely will be going back.

We first discovered this little gem earlier in the summer when we were looking for some place to hang out with our cousins. South 40 was perfect because it's BYOF (bring your own food) so not only could we enjoy our own snacks but we were able to enjoy flights or beer and then select the ones we liked the most. I'm not crazy about beer but I loved the berry seltzer (sorry, can't remember the name). We enjoyed our time so much that I surprised my husband and took him back for Father's Day and he loved it! They also have giant connect 4, corn hole and a few other games for entertainment. It's pet friendly and the staff there is extremely kind and welcoming. We took our goldendoodle who is an absolute ball of energy and they were all so sweet. We had taken a bowl for water as well as a bottle of water from home for him but they brought us a bowl and a refrigerated water bottle just for him which was so kind!! Perfect for a drink after work, casual hang out with friends, family, or even a date! read more
