78/100 Lua Vietnamese Cuisine was a polarized experience - on one hand the food was way better than I was expecting, but on the other hand, the interior was a bit grimy and wait time was long (for service, but not for food to arrive) even though most of the restaurant was empty. --- I dined for weekday lunch as a party of four at Lua Vietnamese Cuisine. There were many empty tables with dirty dishes left on them, which to me suggested they were understaffed that day. To my knowledge, Lua was recently constructed, however the booth seating was already ripping and the floor and booth seams were honestly grimy. I would've expected those from a hole in the wall restaurant, but it looks really modern and "elevated" inside. My menu was dirty and I didn't realize it was missing some pages (because the pages ripped from the staple) so I thought the menu was a lot smaller than it was. I hope they find a better way of cleaning the restaurant interior and menus, and update the menus to higher quality. I ordered (S3)- Vietnamese Dried Noodles, which came with a bowl of soup. The rest of my party ordered (A16)- Butter Glazed Fried Quail and (B4)- Grilled Pork and Spring Roll on Rice Vermicelli. -I ended up eating the (S3) Dried Noodles for four days because of the shear quantity of them, so to me it was incredible value. And it had a fair portion of seafood and the flavor was actually surprisingly super delicious, if not a bit sweet. I had an upset stomach that day and was happily surprised this dish came with soup. I would reorder this, especially if I was hungry. -For me, the quail (A16) was a little dry but well seasoned. There were two quails in the serving. I would reorder this again only if I was craving small bites. - The pork chop (B4) was on the above average side in terms of taste, but fairly large in terms of size. There was rice, spring roll, egg omlette, along with other sides. Overall, Lua Vietnamese Restaurant had an extensive menu and I really enjoyed the food. However, while the food was quick to come out, the table service was painfully slow and the interior was grimy. I'd recommend giving it a try if you're in the area, but not in a rush. read more

We came on in Wednesday in the mid afternoon and the place was packed, likely because they have a $10 pho special. It comes with 3 toppings, raw beef, brisket, tendon, tripe or meatball. The soup was hot and flavorful with a nice amount of toppings. A few tendon pieces were still crunchy and could have been cooked a bit more. The restaurant is fairly large in the inside but there were a lot of uncleared tables. Service is a bit slow and there can be a long wait so if you plan on coming be prepared to spend a little time here. read more

Lua Vietnamese Cuisine is a great addition in Festival Plaza! I must say this location is filled with a variety of food options and Lua doesn't disappoint. They have Pho Wednesdays where you get a delicious meal for an affordable price. You can either dine in or get takeout for this deal. I've had the pleasure of doing both and I'm impressed with the Togo packaging and it's usually warm when I get home. The service is prompt based on the day/time of visiting but it is a nice atmosphere for eating some good Vietnamese food especially during the winter months. I love the various drinks and desserts they provide too so please make sure you hungry when you visit! read more

This was my second time dining here. The first time we had Pho so this time I figured we would try something else so we had the rice platters. I love short ribs so this was an easy decision for me. The ribs were very tasty and delicious with a very flavorful marinade. Some pieces were a bit on the chewy side but that's meant to be expected. The veggies were fresh and crisp and made a nice accompaniment. My hubby went with the Lemongrass pork chop platter that had a little bit of everything. He also commented that the chops had a very tasty marinade very similar to my ribs. He enjoyed his dish as well. Service was very friendly and attentive and we look forward to our next visit and sampling something new on the menu. read more

Celebration dinner for a Rutgers MPH graduate! Five of us started with shared appetizers - summer rolls w/ shrimp; vietnamese pancake and combination banh mi and calamari split amongst us. All were very good, fresh ingredients, plenty to share, great sauces. The pancake and calamari dishes were exceptional. For entrees we had a few dishes with seafood, grilled chicken, grilled pork and spicy beef/pork soup or noodles. All were great. Staff were attentive in refilling our water glasses and we had a couple of vietnamese coffees, and special sodas. Would definitely visit again. Located in the plaza with the H-Mart and many other restaurants with Asian cuisine, so parking is a premium. read more

So our family decided to give this spot another try and hoping for better food quality than our first visit a year ago.... We came on Wednesday night which happens to be their Pho special night - $10 for Pho your way. You get to select three proteins. I got the brisket, rare steak and beef ball. Hey, it's pho so get the beef! The broth was decent - not great not bad but okay. The dipping hoisen and siracha was available but very low stocked. We asked for more and they did restocked but very little. We ordered what's supposed to be bot chien - it is a popular Vietnamese street food dish made from a block of steamed rice flour and tapioca starch that is cut into cubes, pan-fried until crispy, and then scrambled with eggs and green onions. Well, it's nothing like it unfortunately. I taste mainly fried eggs with some green onions. It lacks the carbs and the crispy texture. I think if I'm stuck on a pinch and craving pho, I might stop by again but with so many other Vietnamese restaurant, it's probably not worth the visit especially when parking is a nightmare at this shopping center. read more

My husband and I recently visited for a birthday dinner for our nine-year-old, who absolutely loves Vietnamese pho--and this spot did not disappoint! We loved that it's a BYOB restaurant, and even better, there's a store just a few doors down where you can conveniently grab a bottle to bring in. They'll open it and serve it for you, which was a really nice touch. The menu is extensive, with plenty of appetizers to choose from. Portions were fair, the food was fresh, and every bite was packed with flavor. Our server was incredibly kind and attentive--he made sure our kids, my husband, and I were taken care of the entire time, and we truly appreciate that level of service. I also want to highlight how clean and beautifully decorated the restaurant is. They've done an excellent job with the ambiance, and it made the experience even better. We'd love to come back and try more from the menu. Check out our photos and videos to see what we ordered! read more

Battled the HMart parking lot to come to Lua Vietnamese Cuisine in Edison. While the ambiance was nice, the overall experience was underwhelming. *FOOD* The food itself was okay. We tried the Banh Xeo ($15) which I think could be improved if the crepe part was not soggy from the watery bean sprouts and onions. The Pho Lua / Beef Noodle Soup ($18) was decent and the broth flavorful. It came with an ample variety of meats, though can be a bit pricey. IMO I think you're mostly paying for the nice ambiance here. *SERVICE* Service was mediocre. While dishes came out a decent pace, we weren't greeted warmly, and it didn't seem like they were particularly attentive or enthusiastic towards customers either. Everything about this place is just ok. Overall, it was just an average spot for me. There are other Viet spots in Edison that offer better value and more personable service. read more

Lua Vietnamese in Edison pleasantly surprised us with both flavor and creativity. We ordered the beef pho, which was deeply aromatic with a clean, rich broth and tender slices of beef. The standout twist? You can add bone marrow on the side, which takes the soup to another level--luxurious, savory, and perfect for stirring into the broth for extra depth. A must for pho lovers who appreciate a little indulgence. For appetizers, the sticky rice dish was excellent--crispy on the outside, soft and comforting inside, and well-balanced with sauce and texture. Simple, satisfying, and done right. The space itself is sleek and modern with warm tones and greenery, making it a great spot for a relaxed lunch or casual dinner. Service was friendly and efficient, and everything came out well-paced. read more

The Pho here is not very flavorful, and the broth is pretty bland. There is a good $10 bowl deal on Wednesdays, but I personally would prefer going elsewhere and spending a few more dollars for a heartier and bolder soup. In the spirit of an unbiased review, please take this with a grain of salt, as I'm pescetarian and have not personally tried the beef broth, but my family and friends who have tried the beef pho are not fans either. I do really enjoy the strong coffee here, though. read more

Lua Vietnamese Cuisine is such a solid find--especially if you're craving pho on a budget. I came in for a quick dinner and left feeling full, happy, and already planning my next visit. For our appetizer, the summer rolls were fresh, tightly wrapped, and came with a classic peanut hoisin sauce that balanced everything out. A perfect light starter. The $10 pho is the star of the menu. While I found the broth a bit on the lighter side--less depth than some traditional spots--the noodles were still flavorful, comforting, and honestly hard to beat for the price. The portion was generous, and the meat was tender and fresh. For ten bucks? Yes please! I also tried the ube coconut coffee, and yum! Creamy, slightly sweet, and with that signature Vietnamese coffee punch--it's like dessert in a cup, but not overly rich. Definitely something I'd go back for alone if in the area. The space is clean, modern, and relaxed, and the staff were kind and helpful. Great for a casual meal that won't drain your wallet. Would give it 5 stars if the broth had a bit more depth--but for $10? Still totally worth it. read more

The food does taste good when it finally arrives at the table, but unfortunately, the service and overall experience were very disappointing. This was our second time visiting, and we experienced many of the same issues as our first visit. The table service was poor, with our meals arriving at different times. By the time the rest of our food arrived, the first group had already finished eating. We also had an issue with a dish that included bone marrow. The wait staff came back to confirm that we had ordered the dish with bone marrow, yet when it arrived, there was no bone marrow. This same issue happened during our first visit as well. We advised the wait staff about the problem, but the bone marrow was still never brought to our table. Throughout the meal, no one checked on us to see if we needed anything, including water refills. What made it more frustrating was watching other tables receive their food promptly while we continued waiting. The experience was disappointing, especially because it was my son's birthday and he was really looking forward to having the bone marrow. The food itself is good, but the service needs significant improvement. After having the same experience twice, I'm not sure we'll be returning. read more

The ba vi was absolutely delicious. It comes with grilled pork (nicely flavored, slightly charred, not too fatty), beef in grape leaves (juicy, flavorful - my favorite part of the dish), and minced shrimp packed together in a fried ball (very good as well). After a long drive we wanted Vietnamese food, specifically Pho. We did a quick search and saw that this was near our hotel, so we went here. Service was good! Staff were friendly. However the food was mid. On the menu they had chicken pho with the chicken egg. I ordered that, and saw they offered a side of the eggs as well. I got that and it wasn't what I was expecting. I was expecting the yellow tiny chicken egg, but what I got was 2 l raw eggs in a bowl. The price is pretty high for food that was just ok. $17 Pho your way flavor is a little bland and lacking any fragrance or aroma. They do not provide a lot of the side dish (bean sprouts, lime, basil) that usually goes into your noodle soups. The amount of meat they give per bowl is decent, could definitely be a little more but nothing to complain about. Their $10 Banh Mi - grilled pork- flavor is good but a third of it is bread sadly. It's a decent meal, not bad, but not good for the price. Not worth waiting more than 10 minutes to be seated as there are plenty of Viet restaurants in Edison. I like their Bun bo hue as well as their pork chop over rice. I've ordered a few times and their Bun Bo hue has been on point. It's flavorful with a good ratio of noodles and meat. They are not stingy with their ingredients so for about $17 a bowl of soup, it is worthwhile. Their pork chop over rice comes with 2 pieces of nicely charred and flavorful pork chop that aren't dry like some other restaurants. The staff are generally pretty nice. The restaurant was clean and spacious each time I've gone. Their bathrooms are only 2 stalls (1 Ada and 1 regular) so just time it well if you don't like to wait in line for the bathroom on a busy day/night. If I'm trying a new Vietnamese restaurant, I always have to try their beef pho and Bun bo hue. Upon arrival, the interior is beautifully decorated with plenty of tables. When we came here on a Tuesday, it was not packed whatsoever and we were seated immediately. Despite the low number of customers, we had bit a of a wait to place our order and get water for the table. - Beef pho: 3/5, lacking umami, missing the underlying beefy flavor - Bun bo hue: 3/5, a little sweet (I'm not sure if that is more traditional), but also had red pepper flakes which didn't bring out any spicy flavor at all For $16 a bowl, the pricing is a bit steep for the taste. I think they are still running $10 pho on Wednesdays, which may be more worth visiting for if you're looking for a bite to eat. read more

This place really has a lot of potential but unfortunately it has been very inconsistent and overall not a place I'll likely be frequenting again anytime soon. First experience with the restaurant was ordering on GrubHub for delivery. That time I ordered the Bò Kho (Vietnamese Beef Stew serve with bread or rice noodle). It was very tasty and I was excited to try other items in the restaurant. I decided to come in with a few friends to celebrate a birthday. That time I reordered my Bò Kho dish and my friends ordered the Bún Bò Huế (Spicy Beef and Pork Noodle Soup), Phở Lúa (Beef Noodle Soup *Filet mignon, oxtail, brisket, tendon, beef ball, tripe, beef bone broth, rice noodle, onion, herb) and Bánh Khọt (Mini Savory Pancakes Ground Pork, Shrimp, Rice Flour, Coconut Milk, Onion, and Herbs), Sinh To Bo (Avocado Smoothie), and Iced Milk Coffee. Unfortunately my Bò Kho was not as good as the first time I had it just 3 weeks prior but it was not bad, just weird that it was inconsistent and not as good eating in house. My friends thought their meals and drinks were ok but there was not one item that we raved about. This last time we went we ordered the Bánh Khọt again, Cút Chiên Bơ (Butter Glazed Fried Quail), Bo Ne (Vietnamese Sizzling Steak & Egg - 6 Oz Filet Mignon, Double Running Egg, Pate, Tomato, and Housemade Sauce Served With Bread), Pho Bo Vien (Kid Menu item - beef noodle soup with meatballs), Bánh Canh Cua (Crab Tapioca Noodle Soup), Sinh To Bo, and Soda Chanh Muoi (Carbonated Salted Lemonade). Unfortunately this time my experience was even worse. The avocado smoothie was tasteless. We had to ask them to reblend it with more condensed milk and sugar. The Bánh Canh Cua was also very bland. We had to ask for fish sauce on the side to add to the broth. I would have to say that the fried quail was an interesting dish and was tasty. The steak and eggs were also pretty good according to the person who ordered it. Everything else was just ok but the bad was notable. It's just very disappointing that there were so many misses and inconsistencies even when we reordered some things on multiple visits. I think the service was ok (sometimes better than others) but they were understanding when we asked for things to be redone. I wish this place was better because it's in a great location in the HMart plaza which has no other Vietnamese options and has cute decor but it's misses the mark. read more

Lua is conveniently located in the Hmart shopping plaza in Edison. It has a decent sized footprint in one of the newer buildings in the plaza. Pros - there is a parking lot, great location for multi-taskers looking to hit up the spa (Island Spa across the way), grocery (HMart), Korean skin/beauty shop, and bakery (Paris Baguette). It was and rainy day so a bowl of Pho hit the spot. Delicious broth, which could probably be sipped on its own. The ration of meat noodles and veggies was perfect for the size bowl. My husband had the steak on a skillet. Great flavors but I felt it was too salty and that the sauces overtook the meat. Our server was pleasant and attentive. Another awesome meal at Lua. I don't understand the low rating because the food is absolutely delicious here. And the service is impeccable.
