This was on my must try place since it recently opened. However, it's one and done for me. The restaurant itself was new and decorated very modern. The food itself did not live up to the expectations. I ordered two dishes one was the rice plate special and the other was Vietnamese rice rolls stuff with meat. The banh cuon texture was made tapioca flour which was the wrong wrap. The traditional one is made from rice flour that is more white than this one, it was clear. The fish sauce lack flavor that is was like water and fish sauce droplets. No garlic or lime flavor use in this one. I felt the food is made by people that are not really Vietnamese. The rice dish was okay not something I say wow. The meat lack flavor or wasn't marinated long enough. Again fish sauce lack flavor too. The only thing I enjoyed was the pho broth on the side with the dish. The service was decent and I feel the dishes were very overpriced. Don't mind paying for food that is good but give me some mediocre food we have a problem. Overall, save your money and there other places that you can go to for good Vietnamese. read more

I adore this place. It's spacious and rarely feels overcrowded. The service is always on point, kind and attentive. Takeout and dine-in is always on time and never feels slow. Very good operation and flow. Food is delicious, super tasty and authentic. I usually eat the summer roll with shrimp but their vegetarian one with avocado is really refreshing and I've completely converted to eating that. The rice dishes are good. We don't usually go out to eat Vietnamese food because my mom loves to cook. And her Vietnamese food at home is chef's kiss. My review might be a little biased/harsh only because I was blessed to have grown up on authentic Vietnamese food. We had actually tried their promotion for $10 Pho Wednesdays which is actually a good deal. It's the Pho option where you get to pick 3 of their basic proteins. It was pretty good, the only downside is that the broth didn't come out piping hot lol. Also, We actually had ordered a desert but it came before our main course which left us confused. Basically, our bowl of pho took almost 30 mins to come out which is weird because wouldn't this be the quickest to make? Anyways, the food was mid and the price is a bit steep. I would suggest trying their pho because everything else is eh. I could skip lol Also, if you pay cash, you get a 5% discount. The girl told us as she took our cash but we never got the discount. Hubby and I recently dined at Lua's and sadly the overall experience was a miss for us. The food was a hit and miss depending on what you ordered and who the cook is. The service was adequate but not great. The waiter's lack of attention after taking our orders was evident. I will explain further later. Hubby ordered one of their popular dishes, S4. Com Lua dish, grilled Lemongrass pork chop. The thin pork chops were overcooked and lacked any lemongrass taste. Their egg quiche, which was part of the entree, lacked any taste, as per hubby. I tasted the pork chop and a bit of the egg quiche and had to concur with his assessment. The soup was exceptionally greasy and too salty. On the flip side, my dish S1. Banh Trang Cuon Nong, was exceptionally well presented, delicious, and delicate. The Vietnamese Steamed Rice Paper Rolls had small amounts of ground pork, wood ear mushroom, and herbs inside the rolls. It was fresh and flavorful. The only caveat was the steamed rice paper rolls had a good amount of grease on them to keep them from sticking to the plate and each other. The service was okay. We were seated quickly, but our waiter had not refilled our water or asked us if we wanted dessert. My hubby was eyeing the Jiggie Tofu Pudding with Brown Sugar boba to cleanse his palate of the dried pork chop. After several attempts to flag him down, we decided to forgo dessert and just ask for the check. I understand that things can get busy in a restaurant, but it wasn't busy at the time we dined so I was surprised and disappointed by the lack of attentiveness from our waiter. He could have just said give me 15 minutes or something. He does not smile and does not have a welcoming attitude. He got our order wrong and I was not happy with the service here. The waiter also does not know his menu items and gave my friend the WRONG ITEM when he is MUSLIM! Thai Ice Tea: It tastes a little bland compared to other restaurants that are nearby. S12 Com Bo Luc Lac (Vietnames shaking beef with rice) - The beef was cooked all the way but it lacked a lot of flavor. Even the peppers did not have a lot of taste to it. The soup that came with it was very bland and was not too my liking. The rice was a little too hard as if they put too little water. This order came out before my aunt's pho noodles. P1 Pho Lua (Beef noodle soup) - I do not understand how these noodles came out last and my rice dish came out first. The taste to this was ok and nothing special but it could have been a little better. S2 Bun Cha Ha Noi (Hanoi style grilled PORK over rice vermicelli - The WAITER told my MUSLIM FRIEND that this was (S7 Hu Tieu/Banh Mi Bo Kho - Vietnamese braised beef stew) and he ate it without knowing as he trusted the WAITER. HE IS MUSLIM AND CANNOT EAT PORK! This water should be FIRED! The pork was dry and did not have any taste to it at all. S7 Hu Tieu/Banh Mi Bo Kho (Vietnamese braised beef stew) - The soup to this had a lot of flavors and was actually the best dish out of everything that we had ordered. The beef was chewy and tasted better than the beef in S12 Com Bo Luc Lac. This was what my friend had ordered since he is MUSLIM and cannot eat pork. We were nicely surprised at the portion size for the kids pork chop with rice since we thought it was going to be a nice plate of food. But glad that it was a nice portion size for the kids. Pork chop was soft and flavorful along with the soup. Dried noodle tasted good as well and came with soup. The table/chairs/and ground could be cleaner though since we were led to a table but there were still some food pieces on the chairs. And the ground was dirty and sticky that the bottom of my shoes got all sticky and kept squeaking due to sticking to the ground every time I walked. A lot of money was spent on the ambience of Lua- this is the fanciest Vietnamese restaurant I've ever seen. It's a spacious restaurant with plenty of seating and in a prime location of Edison. The service was slow and awkward-which is what you would typically expect with a newly opened establishment. We had a party of 6 adults with children. Everyone in the party must be present before you can be seated. It took more than 10 minutes for the water to be brought out. The original waiter was the one who realized and apologized after taking our orders that the water was still not brought out. Speed/efficiency needs to be worked on. They took a while to even take our orders. Typically with a large group like this, we offer to write all our orders down for them on a piece of paper but this was the first time the guy declined and told us someone will be with us soon. They are an ipad centered operation- any modifications, it will take a few minutes for them to even figure out how to key this into their system. Overall esthetics of the food is pretty on the eyes but expensive. Looking forward to trying more of their bone marrow dishes. I wouldn't say this is authentic Vietnamese food but it's nice to have options dining within Hmart plaza. Bun bo hue $18- the portion here is pretty large. Loved their pork knuckles- juicy with plenty of meat. Fresh bean sprouts/basil. The broth was not spicy enough and therefore not the best but it was alright. Coconut ube coffee $8- sweet though certainly not as strong as traditional Vietnamese coffee. I think the funniest thing was the fried spring rolls- 1 order only has 2 pieces. They don't cut it in half for you either so it looks "more" like other typical Vietnamese restaurants. That's 2 small pieces for $6. Since we ordered 3 orders of spring rolls for the kids, they still brought out the rolls on 3 separate plates instead of combining them into 1 family style. Expect to spend over $50 with 2 noodle bowls, appetizers, and a drink. I don't think this place is family oriented/kid friendly but more appropriate for date night or for those days you want to treat yourself. Certainly not a place you could go frequently. I remember a time when all the Vietnamese restaurants were hole in the walls. These days, they're modernized, sleek with a hip vibe. One prime example is Lua Vietnamese Cuisine, the latest new place in the Hmart shopping center. The decor is trendy and music is lively. While there are some traditional classics, there are some new dishes I've never seen before. The summer rolls are good. It includes 3 shrimp halves with noodles, lettuce and scallion. I ordered the grilled pork chop dish (S4). It comes with 2 pieces of bone in pork chops that are deliciously charred. The flavor is really good. It comes with rice, a runny fried egg, a small side of lettuce, tomato and cucumber, a small bowl of soup and an egg quiche. The Pho is good too. There is a lot of meat that comes with the pho. Perfect place for a date night! The restaurant is nicely decorated with friendly staff. Conveniently located in a new strip mall next to hmart. Parking can be an issue on the weekends so it might be easier to go on a weekday. As for the food, we ordered spring rolls, pho (to eat there), and 2 rice dishes to take home and try later. We also ordered 2 specialty coffee drinks which we've never seen anywhere before so we just had to try it. We ordered the ube coconut coffee and the egg style coffee. Make sure to stir the coffee before drinking, otherwise the sweetness level be will be all off. Both coffees were very good but a bit too sweet for my liking. I had to add a bit of water to the ube one and then it was perfect. The pho was excellent. Broth was full of flavor and little to no grease. I'm glad they took their time to get rid of the grease. A lot of places don't and you see a huge layer floating at the top. It came with plenty of meat and tripe. The rice dishes were just ok. The pork chop was full of lemongrass flavor but the egg omelet was very different to what I'm used to. It wasn't as tasty as other places and just had a very bland flavor. Overall, great option if you don't want to eat at three other restaurants around. But just note the pricing is slightly more expensive than other vietnamese places around. I first discovered Lua when I caught a glimpse of it while dining at Kura next door. The modern interior with orange chairs and tasteful plants and artwork immediately attracted me. When heading over to the website to make a reservation, I was turned away by the $20 no-show fee, and therefore decided to take the risk and walk-in for a Thursday night dinner. Thankfully, there were plenty of open tables during the entirety of my stay. My friend and I shared the nobu style crispy sticky rice which was AMAZING. At first I was concerned that it would be spicy, but I can assure you that there is 0 spice. The exterior of each cube was crispy, but the inside was chewy and sticky, and overall delicious. For drinks, we got the egg coffee and vietnamese iced coffee, which we both enjoyed and for entrees I got the grilled lemongrass pork chop over rice and my friend ordered the hanoi style grilled pork over rice vermicelli. The portion size was more than satisfactory and we both enjoyed every part of our meal. Our only complaint was the service. The food arrived extremely fast, which we appreciated, but the staff was slightly off putting. Our waiter would stand at our table for slightly longer than socially acceptable and stare at us uncomfortable for extended periods of times. His lack of social cues gave us a weird vibe to the place, but otherwise we enjoyed our experience. The throwback pop songs were nice, but slightly confusing for a Vietnamese restaurant. read more

This restaurant offers certain Vietnamese dishes that aren't so common in typical Viet restaurants, such as banh khot, bo ne, & ca phe trung...but I can't say all dishes were executed correctly/authentically. Another con is the price - it is on the expensive side. However, it should be expected - I already knew Lua wasn't a regular mom-and-pop establishment. It's supposed to be an upscale, modern, trendy Viet restaurant, which I believe they hit the mark - from the interior design to the use of bamboo woven plates/baskets. The service was slow as well. Overall, I'm not in a rush to return here, but I would come back to try their other items. Ca Phe Trung ($7): I love Vietnamese egg coffee and was really excited for this, but it was disappointing. The egg cream/foam didn't have the same consistency as an authentic ca phe trung would. Goi Cuon ($7): Decent. Banh Khot ($15): Decent. Bo La Lot ($15): Delicious. One of my favorites from the restaurant. Hu Tieu Kho ($18): Decent. Bo Ne + Bone Marrow ($22+$7): It didn't hit the mark for me. I was excited for a fresh new Vietnamese spot in the area, as the viet food around here has not been exceptional. Serving uncommon dishes like Banh Khot and Bo Ne, I thought there was a lot of potential. Unfortunately, Lua under delivered and is over priced for the quality served. Their menu originally looked promising, with many authentic dishes you don't see at other Vietnamese restaurants, like the quail or the crab soup. At the same time, you can tell that Lua casually drops trendy high-quality food terms like wagyu, bone marrow, and filet mignon throughout their menu, at an attempt to make their food seem more upscale than it really is, and to justify their high costs. Their Signature Pho Lua, which they claim contains filet mignon, goes for $18 and is an average bowl of pho-- nothing spectacular, and no better than their nearby Viet competitors' $12-13 bowls of pho. I was excited to try their Bo Ne, a dish my viet family has never made at home, and one I never see on menus. Google images of Bo Ne had me salivating-- skillets of sizzling steak, blistered tomatoes, rich pate, sometimes some thick slices of cha lua. Imagine my disappointment when I got tough overcooked "filet mignon," two mushy tomatoes, an overly salty sauce, and zero pate (even though their menu listed it) for $22. Vietnamese food can be both budget-friendly and delicious. And despite their desperate attempt at seeming posh with the inclusion of filet mignon and wagyu, Lua is neither. I honestly wanted to like it, I always want to support local Asian (especially Vietnamese) businesses, but you are better off going to any of their nearby competitors. read more

I ordered the Banh Mi Dac Biet and a summer roll, I got excited and ate half the order before snapping the photo of course. Let's get to the breakdown: Banh Mi -- filling to bread ratio is mediocre. I do appreciate having "dry" pickled veggies, however for this particular sandwich it really needed some type of moisture. The bread was not the best, it was not crunchy at all, instead just tasted like stale old bread that got hard sitting out on the counter. I would have appreciated if it was freshly toasted, and perhaps more ingredients to offset the hunks and chunks of bread. I give this a 3/5. Would probably not order again, unless I'm dying for a Bahn Mi, which is challenging to find in this local area. Summer roll - delicious! 4/5 However it needs some mint, or beansprouts. Was a bit boring. Only see and taste vermicelli and the shrimp. The sauce was excellent, however would recommend chopping up the peanuts a bit more finely. I tried to scoop the peanuts into a bite, but since that was challenging I ended up scooping up way too much sauce and it was salty but I wanted the peanut flavor. Lua is a beautiful oasis in the busy hustle of Edison's h-mart shopping center. It would be great for dates or families. My friend and I went for dinner and started with a shrimp summer roll. I don't have much to complain about but I've had better. It was too overstuffed with rice noodles and I found myself wanting more and more of the accompanying sauce. My friend and I got the bun with grilled chicken that is rice vermicelli and some veggies. It's almost a salad bowl with a slightly sweet dressing. I enjoyed it but also needed more sauce for flavor. Lua is an attempt to bridge Vietnamese cuisine with today's modern and high end ambiance. In terms of their location, the decor, the menu items, I'd say they're on the right track. However, the service, presentation, and food itself is quite lacking. We had a group of 7, which to be fair, is a bit difficult to deal with. We wanted to share family style rather than individually, which again difficult to deal with - and on our part was a mistake for choosing this place. However, that doesn't change the fact that they forgot items on our order, didn't come around to check up on us unless asked, and no server was to be found on giving us our check (we went to the front to pay because everyone wanted to leave). The food itself was 50/50. I enjoyed the variety and specialities available (outside of just pho) - like coconut palm, banh knot, etc... but none of the food stood out, pho was lack luster, the crab soup barely had any protein and not worth the value you pay, the amount and quality of shaking beef is mediocre. I didn't have high expectations for the Vietnamese food walking in here, but I was definitely pleasantly surprised. This is a more upscale Vietnamese restaurant serving some classics and trendier dishes including Wagyu beef, and it's definitely on the pricier side compared to what you may be used to. However, this was well worth it. Space is beautifully decorated, and service was prompt and polite. We ordered the coconut ube latte, sugarcane juice, chè 3 màu, banh mi with grilled pork, Vietnamese shaking beef with rice, and the Vietnamese dried noodle. Sugarcane juice was pressed from real sugarcane on site. I've been wanting to try an ube latte for so long, and I think the Vietnamese coffee was not as strong as I usually prefer but overall still a great drink. Chè was also pretty good! The Vietnamese dried noodles were absolutely loaded with pork, squid, and fish balls, and even though it was $17, it was a pretty large portion. The shaking beef was really tender and came with a side of broth/soup, which I didn't expect but enjoyed. Lastly, my mom really loved the banh mi thit nuong and ordered another one to take home. We ordered quite a bit (total of 7 drinks/dishes) and it came out to around $80, which honestly seemed pretty reasonable considering what we ordered. Relatively new Viet spot near the Edison HMart, next to Kura. It's really spacious and modern looking, and upon entering, my wife and I were kindly guided to our seats by our server, who was quick to notice I was cold and offered my tea. Perusing the menu, they definitely had a lot of unique options (like bó né, which looks like a Viet inspired brunch dish served on a hot plate), along with a few of my favorite hits (bo luc lac, bun bo hue). They also had a few solid drinks available (Viet iced coffee, which had a great balance of bitter and sweet, and coconut ube coffee, which I will try next time) My wife and I ordered the goi cuon (summer roll), pork chop pho, and their flagship pho (pho lua) The summer roll was nicely chewy and had good texture between the noodles, lettuce, and rice wrap, though the shrimp could've been a bit fresher (the trade off was the speed at which the dish came out, so they def had the shrimp ready to prepare right away!) The pho lua broth was nice - subtle sweetness and somewhat beefy, though a LITTLE bit oily, and the bowl came with 2 pieces of beef ball, quite a few pieces of brisket and sliced filet mignon (you can tell the difference), ~6 chunks of tendon, some trip, and a ton of chewy rice noodles. For $19, it's not the cheapest, but considering location and meet quality it definitely is right. As for the pork chop pho, the broth was a bit more seasoned, with the pork served on the side. In terms of value, this definitely takes the cake - the 2 pieces of pork chop are thicker than your average Viet pork chop (in my experience at least) and needs the knife they gave you to chop up (you will have to get around the bone, but it's worth it, as the meat closer to the bone is super tender). All 4 things together (summer roll, 2 phos, Viet coffee) ran us $50 and left us full with a few pieces of pork for take home. Pretty worth the price, and considering value, definitely a solid 4 for now, though I will definitely return to try their other dishes. Can't wait! read more

I had steak with eggs and bone mallow. It was my first time trying bone mallow. It was tasty. But not something I would crave to eat all the time. The steak and egg were okay. Nothing crazy. The cut of the steak could have been better. We also tried Spice Pho noodles, and it was good. Also, we had a pancake thing for an appetizer. A spring roll was probably a better choice. We will go back there and try different dishes next time. The service was excellent. I wish the food were a little better. Some parts of the steak and egg dish had cold parts. It was not adequately heated, I was wondering why. I did not complain, though. This place just opened three months ago. read more

I do have mixed feelings about this place. It definitely appeared fancier than any other Vietnamese restaurant I've been to. They were attempting to elevate a traditional Vietnamese comfort food and the Signature dishes have impressive presentations. They were delicious as well....but no more than any other smaller and humbler Vietnamese places I've tried. My husband had the Com LÙA and he thought it was just ok. Their Pho was good. I ate more of this than my Bò nè. Bo ne- beautifully presented; marrow needed a bit of salt, and the steak was chewy. Was that filet mignon? The sauce was good. It was perfect for the bread to sop up. I wish the bread was served warm. I wish our water was replenished. I wish our waiter didn't seem burdened serving us. I came to this restaurant knowing there was $10 pho on Wednesdays. For such a big bowl, this was such a steal! We ordered spring rolls and little pancakes on the side. Spring rolls really hit the spot. Server was very kind and they had beautiful bright orange decor. An FYI, apparently they don't take reservations. The wait wasn't long but do keep in mind the restaurant is busy on Wednesday afternoon because of their pho special. read more

Food is good. Everything was very delicious. I recommended getting the grilled pork summer roll. Everything was very fresh but your staffing need alittle better work. They have no customer service experience what so ever. They try to look somewhere else just so they don't have to give you eye contact. This place is pretty new. I like the decor of the place. Make you feel like you went to upscale restaurant in Ho Chi Minh. The only reason why I gave this place 4 stars because of the service. read more
