It was alright. I was missing the pate, and I was missing the correct proportion in every bite. That being said, was it yummy? Yes. Was it the best banh mi I've ever had? Definitely not. Soup's On is a café that might be best for the college kids on a budget or trying to eat healthy. It is close to the BSO Meierhof Concert Hall, and the menue and dining room are unique in a quirky kind of way. They prepare home style soups, sandwiches and some meals with chicken or beef. No real complaints about what we ordered except the eggplant sandwiches was really not as expected, ie something soft like babba ghanoush would have been nice. You might get an impression that they try to serve healthy food as they seem to have left that salt out of the soups. They do provide it at the table though. After you are done with your meal, check out the health food store on the lower level, another holdout from the 70's. read more

11/29/16: My mom was visiting from ATL and wanted soup. Yelp pointed us towards Soup's on. I really want to give this place better ratings b/c it's so endearingly unassuming in location and decor of mostly serve yourself plastic silverware and water cooler. I also just loved the enthusiasm and energy the staff (?owner). We entered the locale and headed upstairs where we were met with a very smily authentic person who described the soup choices with gusto. All of the soup and sandwich options were clearly made with love and from the heart on the premises. And I just love to support a small business. But 1/2 of what I ate was just not that good. What was good: The french onion soup was phenomenal. The brown broth was covered in melted gruyere cheese with a surprising chunk of their vegan, crusty, seed-covered bread laying in wait under the depths of the broth. Really tasty flavor profile of salty savory beefy hot goodness. I wanted to take a bowl home with me. I also really enjoyed the Roasted Eggplant Sandwich. Eggplant can sometimes be aversive to me if too thick or not cooked to crispy for me...it's a texture thing for me. They breaded and cooked the eggplant was well cooked and had just enough of something like balsamic vinegar that made the its pop with just the right amount of acidity with sweetness. I'm just hoping the rest was b/c they don't do meat well or b/c they just got back from vacation (we tried to visit earlier in the week but they were closed for Thanksgiving). I had the pork bahn mi (there's a tofu one as well) and if you know me, you know this is literally my absolute favorite sandwich in the whole world. And consequentially, I have such high hopes and excitement whenever it's a menu option. I am even really forgiving of most places that offer this sandwich b/c unless you get it from a Vietnamese bakery, the bread (which I feel is one of the key high points of this sandwich) will never be right. Just get the flavor profile correct (that's all I expect here in Bmore). Soup's on should not even loosely call this a bahn mi. The ingredient list on the menu sounds like they would come close although there are some things in there that don't typically go on a bahn me...Daikon, Carrot, English Cucumber & Jalapeno with a Sirrachi-Chili Mayo Garnished w/Cilantro, Mint, & Scallion. The sandwich I got was literally smothered in mint, shredded up, not even whole leaves. under that was bland underseasoned pork aside a couple pieces of cucumber, on dry bread. Bread wasn't crispy or chewy or any of the things a bahn mi bread needs to have. No mayo, no jalapeño, no pickled anything.... Lastly, there was a very bland under seasoned root vegetable soup. underwhelming. I will probably try Soup's on a day not directly after being closed for a holiday. I want them to be more awesome. I have given this place too many chances. Overall mediocre food, bad service and outdated interior. Soups on is located around the block from me and I'm usually in the situation where a friend wants to go, though always hesitant, I tell myself I'll give it one more chance. Never a good idea. The soup has no flavor! Watered down soups without seasoning, literally absolutely no salt. I've never had to put that much salt and pepper in food I bought in a restaurant before. The bland soup comes in the smallest paper cup with a plastic spoon and stale croutons. I've had the eggplant and portobello sandwiches which are both okay, the pepper jack cheese on the portobello sandwich tastes like cheap Kraft single cheese. It's also overpriced, especially for the portions, probably so people don't notice how unseasoned and mediocre it is. Do your taste buds a favor and go somewhere else! read more

Had the roasted eggplant sandwich, and it was simply divine! Also had the mushroom bisque, which was served super hot and slightly 'bland.' I think that was intentional though as some people won't want their soups too salty. Some sea salt to that bisque, and I was sipping it to its last drops! I've only been here once, but so far so good. They always have vegetarian and vegan options, and seemed knowledgeable about which items were gluten free! It's a good deal for a light, fresh lunch, and I like that I'm supporting a local business. But unless you order a couple items, it will certainly be a light lunch as the portions are somewhat small. Also, they sell out as the day goes on. I do agree that the soup (at least the one I had) was a bit on the bland side, but I like a lot of flavor and spice. They have salt, pepper, and old bay that you can add at your own leisure. The guy working did say they purposefully don't salt the soup much, or something to that effect. So I figured that it was about time for a re-review of this fine establishment. The only problem with coming down here is that it's a bit "out of the way" from my usual travel routes - but after yesterday's meal, I think I'm going to have to alter said routes to include a stop here every now and then. The food is just as good as I remember it - maybe even better. I hadn't come here since I was diagnosed, so I had to pay extra attention to what I was going to have. I used to order the portabella sandwich, but that's now out because of the bread - so I decided on my staple French onion soup and a tarragon chicken salad. The French onion soup is JUST as good as I remember it to be - huge hunks of melty cheese, one of their delish crostinis soaking up inside of the cup... just thinking about it makes me want to head down there for a cup or two. This is really their highlight soup, folks - I personally don't need to put ANY salt in it, it's perfect right out of the pot, but some might still want to add it for their own personal tastes. The soups here are not overly salted - this is not Campbell's Kitchens, ladies and gentlemen. If you like soups of that caliber, you're going to hate it here. The tarragon chicken salad is as delicious as everyone says it is. Really. The grapes highlight the tenderness of the greens, the mayo sets off the earthy flavor of the chicken - really, I think this salad has overtaken the portabella sandwich as my to-go dish. To top it off, the staff here is, as I said, incredibly sweet. I hadn't stopped in for months, but the second I came in the door, Kevin knew who I was, greeted me with a big smile, and said how happy he was to see me back. Come on, who wouldn't like service like that? I'm definitely going to make this a regular part of my lunch routine when I'm home on the weekends. It's worth the extra few steps! Tip for Diabetics: I didn't seem to have much trouble eating here, to my profound relief. There's no carb counts on anything, and I don't expect there to be - these are pretty much homemade, rustic recipes. I didn't try the sandwiches because of the bread issue, but in all honesty, I don't actually think it'll give you much trouble, because the bread isn't that large, and it's one of those crusty ones that have more substance than sugar. I will definitely attempt it next time, I think. You're pretty much good to go on all of the soups and salads here, and that's more or less almost their entire menu. At the risk of sounding doubly cliched, Soupon is dead ON. I am finishing the tarragon chicken salad over greens that I ordered along with the french onion soup and I am stuffed and still have half the salad left. It cost me $9 for half soup half salad. The chicken salad is the bomb, very filling with lots of chicken meat and tasty grapes along with a decent heaping of mixed greens and tasty balsamic dressing. The soup was delicious and fatty. With a large dose of the white cheese in the soup and that yummy beef broth, you are sure to crave more! I ordered for take out and it was quick and ready to go when I arrived. I went here with a few days ago with some friends for a quick dinner. It is a cute hole in the wall sandwich and soup place tucked away in the middle of Mount Vernon. Three of us got the sandwich with goat cheese and strawberry. Another one got the turkey sandwich and another one got the banh mi. The sandwiches are fresh, breads are nicely toasted, but they do lack certain flavor since they don't use any sauces. Banh mi was especially bit disappointing since they don't use any picked vegetables so lacked any flavor to it. The soups were decent but was a little watered down. The reason why I'm giving it three stars while giving the food rather mediocre review, is because the workers there were so laid back and friendly. Although the food wasn't anything outstanding, our cashier came to check up on us, made conversation. The price is very reasonable as well - six dollars for a sandwich ten for a combo. My mother was in town and we were out and about doing some basic mother/daughter shopping. I had come across this place over some reading at some point and when we were up that I was recalled it and thought we would check it out. I am glad we did! They are a gourmet soup joint that makes freshly prepared soups each day. It is owned by brothers who are twins and they offer soups that are made all natural using no additives, preservatives or anything artificial. They even make their own stocks. All their soups are low sodium, use spices from around the world and contain no canned items. They do this with all of their 200 variety of soups. All the soups can be purchased as a cup ($3), bowl ($4), and pint ($5) or in a combo ($7). We decided to both get a combo. We got 1 combo that was soup/salad and 1 combo that was soup/sandwich and then split them both. We tried the Maryland Crab and the Cream of Tomato w/ Mascarpone Cheese. They were both good. He said the crab soup used both back fin and claw meat. The crab soup was perfectly spiced and the tomato soup was very creamy and had a bit of sweetness and the perfect match of tartness I like in my tomato soup. The mascarpone cheese in the tomato soup added a great texture to the soup. We had the Tarragon Chicken Salad Sandwich. It was the best chicken salad sandwich I have ever had. The chicken was the perfect bit size pieces and was perfectly most. The pieces of red seedless grapes in it were wonderful addition! The roll was roll was very fresh. We also had the Soup'R Salad w/ Toasted Walnuts, Red Seedless Grapes & Goat Cheese on Organic Greens in Balsamic Vinaigrette. This salad was perfect also and was very tasteful and nothing was overpowering (even the cheese). It was served with a crostini (a plain and/or seeded toasted baguette sliced and brushed with olive oil and dusted with sea salt & cracked peppercorn, sesame seeds, poppy seeds and oatmeal). They make this on site and it was to die for! I could have eaten about 20 more of these! The brothers have 2 locations: Perry Hall and Mount Vernon. The Mount Vernon location offers just soups and has more daily choices where as the Perry Hall location does the soups, salads and sandwiches. The service was great! He explained all about their soups and let us try whatever ones we wanted. He understood were splitting it so served it to us so we could very easily. As were talking he explained they are looking to open in Towson and maybe Bel Air. Our bill came to $16 for 2 combos and 2 bottled waters. Went in for lunch today and it was the perfect rainy day meal. I had the white bean soup with the roasted eggplant sandwich. So very good!
