Visited Sorellina last night per the recommendation of my date. He had been there a number of times before, and knew that the atmosphere, food selections, and service would not disappoint. I would say that for the most part, he was on par.
First, Sorellina does offer valet for its diners, which can be very helpful when trying to park on that side of the Back Bay. Upon entering this venue, you are greeted with a very large and open environment, well decorated with neutral colors that compliment the striking photographs, ceiling arrangement, large white pillars, and shelving. The white marble bar at the front of the venue is also inviting to guests looking to come in for a casual cocktail or wait while their table is being prepared.
Once seated at our table, we found that the simple, yet unique dishes actually brought a nice feel to the presentation. Although our server took a while to attend to us, other staff did stop by in the interim to meet our needs. We started with cocktails, a raspberry gimlet and a dirty martini. Both came out perfectly prepared to our requests. We followed with shared appetizers, the salmon tartar and the Polpo (grilled octopus, squid ink cous cous, cherry peppers, finocchio). We were pleased that they evenly split the dishes between my date and I into our own portions when served. However, I believe the tartar tasted too much like a cole slaw, and the Polpo, although presented well and delicious overall, needed a bit more seasoning. For our main courses, we decided to split the Filet Minon (8oz. Tenderloin, beech mushrooms, whipped potatoes, Montepulciano sauce) done Black & Blue and the Veal ( "saltimbocca," prosciutto, mushrooms, truffle whipped potato). We accompanied the meal with a Vino Nobile di Montepulciano, 2008.
The meals were both delivered perfectly prepared, and the veal came with a side of polenta to compliment the dish. I found that the steak was the favorite of the two. With some fantastic sauces and seasonings, pared with the polenta, this dish was VERY enjoyable. The veal was a large portion, and the cheese and tomatoes that topped the meat made for a great paring of tastings. The wine also accompanied the meal well.
We skipped out on dessert, but did stay around for quite some time to finish our wine, enjoy some espresso and converse. As it was by this time late on a Monday evening, we were one of two other parties there until nearly 11:30PM. Our server did not rush us along at all, and was certain to pour our wine for us at any glimpse that our glasses were getting low. I felt that for the experience, the venue was adequately priced. I was also very satisfied with the food, service and atmosphere.
I would definitely recommend this venue for dinner dates, family gatherings, a business meeting, or a girl's dinner. I would also recommend dressing well for the venue. I did not see any patrons dressed in jeans or looking poorly put together during our stay. The valet is quite helpful and the bar scene was pretty good for a Monday night (only two seats were left open when we arrived). read more
