Southern provisions was the perfect answer for my brunch cravings. Unfortunately, when we went their kitchen was down and we had to wait for about 45 minutes. They were really nice about it and offered us a complimentary waffle. Fortunately, the food was worth the wait, at least mine was. To be honest, I didn't even order from the brunch menu. I went for the full chicken and waffles then ordered a side of mac and cheese to split with my friend. Now my friend couldn't really say the same thing about her meal. Unfortunately, her meal was cold. I'm still giving them four stars because I'm giving them the benefit of the doubt since their kitchen was down and everything else was delicious. read more

We discovered Canton last year and it's become our usual stop between Philly and DC for dinner. This was our first time here and we were shocked there were only 86 reviews compared with places a block away with hundreds. The bar was hopping with lots of different cocktails. When it comes to the atmosphere, I absolutely love this place. I come here often for drinks because I really enjoy the bar area, the décor, the atmosphere, service etc. I think it has a great vibe over all and the staff is really friendly. I want to give this place more stars, but a 3 star rating isn't necessarily bad in my opinion. Like I said, I do enjoy coming here. It is a solid place to be with friends or just to come hang out with a date. What brings the rating down is that the food seems to always fall short. The menu looks awesome, but the food is just always missing something to make it great. I've come here a lot, and have tried quite a few things here and nothing stands out to me at all. Everything lacks flavor. The Brussels sprouts are great. At this point I would say it is the only thing that meets or exceeds my expectations. Even things like the Caesar salad falls short. The dressing is watered down and lacks flavor. The meat sweats dish was nothing great. Brisket was just terrible and dry. Everything else was quite bland. The Nashville chicken is ok but has a strange taste to me that I can't really pin point. Overall, the food is sub-par but has the potential to be so much better! Great southern comfort style brunch. Did I mention bottomless mimosas? Located on Canton square, this corner restaurant/bar is great for groups. The best time to visit is mostly when the weather is great as the garage style doors will be open with fresh morning air. My go to order here during brunch is the fried chicken Benedict with their Chipotle hollandaise over buttermilk biscuits. Oh my mouth is watering right now thinking about it. There are other tasty things on the menu if that doesn't satisfy you. Service is good, and price is comparable once you add bottomless mimosas. All and all a great brunch experience. read more

When I asked Yelp for a sit-down restaurant that served Fried Chicken, Jokers n' Thieves was one of the suggestions, but JnT is now Southern Provisions. I have no idea if the menu changed, but since so much signage was left over from JnT I'm guessing the changes were mostly cosmetic. This place is right in the center of Canton, With wide garage doors that make the place seem really inviting and raucous. Lots of polished wood and Edison lights give this a real rustic/neo-industrial vibe. There are two wide bars downstairs, and several tables scattered throughout but it seems everything is handled by the bartenders, and that may be their chief failing. This place is designed to be a bar first and foremost, with an emphasis on cocktails and flights of bourbon. They have a good selection of draft beers, but with the bartenders spending so much time on complicated drink orders, I think their business model is really getting in the way of service, since they also have to concentrate on getting food orders to all the customers. We started with some Pork Cracklins, which were crispy and fluffy for the most part. There were some greasy salt bombs mixed in, but they were pretty good. I was disappointed to see they did not actually offer Fried Chicken. We opted for the Chicken and Waffles, which was made with boneless chicken breasts. I personally have never understood that dish in the first place, since I never know how I'm supposed to eat it and deal with the bones, and while this does neatly answer that I think the dish does suffer for it. The chicken was fine if slightly tough, but the coating was great. My wife ordered the Angel Spice coating, and found it almost too hot, so I'm glad we didn't try the Devil. The regular Crispy would probably have been just fine. The waffle itself was great, and the maple butter it came with was oh my god out of this world. If you do brunch here and just get some waffles you'll be really happy. I ordered the Crawfish Roll which was okay. It wasn't overloaded so it did make for a good sandwich to eat at the bar, and it came with pretty decent fries. This is a nice place to come for a few drinks, especially if you're patient. Jokers & Thieves in Canton recently rebranded as Southern Provisions and switched up their menu - they kept it low-country, but made a few changes. With the addition of garage doors to the bar, on a warm evening, it's the perfect place to sit outside. With the weather being so lovely recently, it was the perfect place to grab dinner and drinks. Tip, if you're at Southern Provisions and downstairs is packed, check upstairs - there's a full bar and you can order food. Southern Provisions is one of those places where everything on the menu looks delicious so my friends and I opted to share some appetizers. If you're unfamiliar - Hush Puppues are similar to corn bread, except they're deep-fried and shaped into balls. We started with an order of these and they were delicious. The order came with eight which was a good size for sharing - my friends and I loved these, as well as the honey butter they were served with. We also started with an order of the Pimento Mac & Cheese Spring Rolls. These were every bit as delicious as they sounded. The pimento cheese was creamy and had a slight kick which I really appreciated. The rolls were also served with a sweet chili mayo for dipping. One of my friends declared this as her favorite dish in Baltimore. Another item we ordered was the White Trash Tacos, I'm not going to lie, half the reason was for the name. But they also sounded spectacular. They're tacos filled with fried chicken, slaw, pimento cheese, and pickled jalapenos. The fried chicken was super tender and the skin had a nice crunch. While I generally try not to associate myself with 'white-trash' I would gladly do it again for these tacos. The last thing ordered was the Half a Day Smoked Brisket, the flavorful tender brisket was smoked for 12 hours and laid over a bed of cheesy-creamy- spinachy rice, roasted mushrooms and then topped with bleu cheese butter. Unsurprisingly, this was also delicious and I will probably order it on my next trip. I saw both bartenders at the front bar taking shots throughout the night. When they poured my drink, the bartender poured me a soda and forgot the liquor. I told them what happened and asked for a new drink, and rather than admit their mistake, the bartender took the drink out of my hand and threw it in the trash. I order 2 more drinks and decided to tip $0 for the drink that was thrown out. The same bartender threw out both of my drinks and called the bouncer over to throw me out of the bar. We visited here for my mother's birthday. The menu offers lots of delicious options. My husband got the burger, I got the tofu wrap, and my mom got the shrimp and grits. The burger was a bit dry but the other meals were wonderful. However, it was freezing in the restaurant! We sat close to the door and boy did we feel it. Oh and every time we tried to speak it felt like we had to shout because the music was SO loud. I've gone here a couple times for drinks in the evening and have had good times. I have nothing against the actual place as far as having fun. On the other hand, they have a waitress who tends to add a couple dollars onto the tip line. It may be a few dollars here and there, but it's the principle and that is stealing. To make it even worse when the manager was confronted she was extremely rude and even justified the behavior of the waitress while admitting that they stole money. I have been there once for a breakfast/brunch on the weekend, and it was not good. Plain... not good... How hard is it for a trained chef/cook to cook soft scrambled eggs? Well....really hard for these guys apparently. But that was a number of months ago. They misprepared my eggs 2 times.... Totally browned and overcooked. I was really disappointed. But everything else was fine. But maybe they've improved their brunch, maybe not. But what won me over was about a few weeks ago, I met a group of friends here for an OPEN MIC NIGHT! The first time I came here I was greeted by their manager, Larry, who appeared to be a god amongst men. He guided me to a seat where I had optimal beer access and dance floor access. Went to this place because of Baltimore Restaurant Week and will DEFINITELY be going back. Because of this, we were able to to get 3-courses for a steal ($35), we were able to try a lot of the menu in one sitting. My favs were the fritters and the Nashville Hot Chicken & Waffles (must haves). All came out fresh and on time. Also, got some Moscow mules to round out the meal. Our waiter was one of the bartenders too and at first I was scared, but she was awesome! It also seems like they have bands there on certain nights. I'll have to try and check that out. read more

Dined at Southern Provision's last week. Used to enjoy Joker's and thieves, and the area needed something similar. I know I'm a little late to the party, and I don't know why it took me so long to come here. I enjoyed the Nashville Hot Chicken Sliders. Seems like the restaurant staple. Next time I plan on trying some of ribs and brisket. You can get the meat sweats for two at $40, great value! What stood out to me was the bourbon and whiskey list. This was the first bar in a long time that i can remember that had a fully stocked whiskey menu. They still have some service issues to figure out. An example that comes to mind is the server handing the dinner plate to pass across the table rather than placing it there himself. Not a big deal, but surprising to see this at a restaurant in the square. Looking forward to future visits! I remember seeing this pop up a few years ago in the Canton Square, and being excited about a new hot spot. Well. It's MORE than a hot spot. It's a second home. Before you judge me for being the local lush, I mean it's a second home because the people that work here and make SoPro what it is, make you feel like family. Every time you come here, they greet you with the same excitement that my dogs greet me after being in the bathroom for 3 minutes. The menu is ON POINT. The drinks. Flowing. Eggs were burnt and somehow achieved sunny side up eggs being dry... and the bacon was so dry it would crumble before it reached your mouth. The toast was fantastic though! So i did go back for brunch, and ordered the chicken and waffles and lo and behold i get served the same dish sans bone in chicken. Em no, so i called the manager and in a condescending tone starts telling me how to him chicken and waffle means chicken that you can cut into. I'm not exactly a fan of Canton's bro-y/college-esque (or just out of college) going-out scene. it can get pretty obnoxious. Went to a few other bars, and left pretty disappointed. Came here and was pleasantly surprised. They had a live band, but unlike some of the other places, this was a COVER band. So clutch! They did a decent job with the covers ranging from Tom Petty to Britney Spears. The crowd was also pretty fun too. We went here for brunch this weekend. I liked that they opened at 10am. I can't wait for 11am (ha-ha!) We were the only ones here. The unlimited mimosas are a great price and they even accommodated me by allowing me to have pineapple juice instead of OJ. They gave me a big glass so they didn't need to come refill it often which I liked. My partner ordered the Bloody Mary with the meat straw. What a great idea! It was tasty! The reason I am giving this place five stars is because these grit cakes they have for the breakfasts. They are like pillows from heaven! I would give this place 5 stars for the service because we had a really nice, friendly and helpful server. However, it's getting 3 because the service saved it from getting less! This is a nice looking place from the outside with glass doors that open all the way across which was great because we were looking for a place with outdoor seating for happy hour on that one 80 degree day we had the other week! The menu is meh at best - although I would recommend the mac 'n cheese spring rolls which were delicious. We asked for a cheese plate sans the meat as we had a vegetarian with us and our super helpful server said it wouldn't be a problem, they would just load up on the cheese for us. Kraft singles and some kind of cheese coleslaw (minus the cabbage and any actual veggies... Basically cheese curds in some kind of runny mayo sauce!) wasn't really what we had in mind. Call us snobs? Cocktail menu was average. I had a Jalisco Slap which wasn't bad but nothing to write home about. I would say we just had different expectations to what this place actually provides. Went last night for drinks and good times with friends. My first impression is that this place is somewhere I would hang out regularly. It reminds me of a whiskey distillery back home in Buffalo. Very cool and quaint inside. Great atmosphere. Although I didn't eat anything I say someone order what looked like loaded fries and I can tell you my mouth was watering. I def need to get back to try the eats. The drink menu was outstanding and I definitely see myself going back soon. read more
