My son was raving about Sonnys BBQ when he last came through Florida. It wasn't this location he came to, it was somewhere by Pensacola (not sure of exact location) but I do know it's not this one!!!! The front entrance was nice and inviting, it was well lit up, walking into the dining area, it went from well lit up to dark and dim. We were seated right away for a party of 10. Didn't get the name of our waitress, we ordered our drinks and it took her 15minutes to deliver. She came with the first half and spilled the drinks on my grandson and son. She apologized which was nice of her. Then it took her another 10 minutes to deliver the rest of our drinks. Service-3/5 Ordered our appetizers and food all at the same time because that's how much time we had to look over the menu. We asked her to bring everything out all at once since we ordered, no that didn't happen, appetizers came out, it was room temperature and not hot. We asked to refill our drinks and she came with two pitchers (she suggested to bring the two pitchers so she doesn't have to go back and forth, hey it sounded good to us so we don't have to interrupt her from serving other tables and hoping she'll bring our food out as soon it was done:) Kids cups were filled to the brim with ice. The tables we sat at was sticky...I understand and grateful that they use sanitizer cleaner to clean the tables but wished they found something else that will do the same job and it wouldn't make the tables and chair stick to your body or clothes...when I got up to leave, my shorts were stuck to the bench, thank goodness no one was sitting behind me because they would've had a show...lol. We did ask for a wet rag so that we can try to wipe the table and bench and she came through but it didn't help with the sticky-ness. Wish I could give a better review for service!!!! Food-3/5 Corn nuggets-extra crispy, powdered sugar added on top to add some sweetness, couldn't taste the corn. It was like eating fried dough. Loaded tots-It was loaded with more crispy onion straws than anything else. I guess anything fried is suppose to taste good..:( Redneck egg rolls-Extra extra crispy slightly burnt, no flavor, had to drench it with ranch just to eat it. BBQ Sandwich-Pulled pork, the sandwich was cold!! Pork was cold couldn't savor over the pork, thank goodness they have bbq sauces on the table to give it a kick of flavor. Bread was cold and soggy and very buttery. Sweet Carolina-I don't know because I didn't eat it. My son said it's not the same from the first Sonny restaurant he went. Let me just say he wasn't please about it. Kids chicken tenders- That was piping hot because my kids took a bite and spit it out because it was burning their mouth. Other than that they ate all of their chicken tenders and fries. Wish my food was hot like theirs. My son said the food wasn't what he expected, he really wanted to show off Sonnys BBQ since we're visiting. This week I tried their new limited time menu item - the Cuban sandwich. It was to die for, definitely recommend, 10/10! Every bite was perfect. Enough pickles, meat, cheese, and sauce that I started and couldn't stop eating. A little greasier than a traditional Cuban since it is cooked similar to a grilled cheese, but was still amaze-balls. In Gainesville on business and I managed to come to this restaurant 3 times... in 3 weeks. Lol. I wasn't even here for full weeks, more like Monday through Wednesdays or Monday through Thursdays yet I still managed to make it here each week. That must say SOMETHING about how good this place is. I'm going to talk mostly about the first time here because the 2nd 2 were equally as good. Atmosphere/Appearance: Nothing too crazy going on outside. Big open private parking lot, but the cool thing is you can see the smokers that they use on the side of the building. Once inside it's sort of the same situation. The focus here is the food. Very basic decor, but a very modern appeal. My co-worker and I sat in the bar each time because we didn't feel the need to go all up in the dining room... plus be closer to the kitchen/bar for refills. Lol. Service: Man... Janinne was freaking awesome. She wasn't even supposed to work that night, but she picked up a shift for someone else and we're glad that she did. She was SO MUCH FUN, sweet, personable, funny and did I say fun? She took great care of us first timers and had us coming back each week asking for her... but she wasn't there. Lol. Our waters stayed full and so did our plates. Food: So... here's what you do. I mean, if you're really hungry. You order the St. Louis style ribs and get the all-you-can-eat option. That way you can change to ANY of the meats that they offer without extra charge. Let me explain. So you can get the ribs dry or wet. Then for the next round you can switch to their pulled pork, sliced pork, sliced chicken, smoked turkey or pulled chicken. Janinne made sure we had all of it and PLENTY. For a side (which are also refillable) you can have garlic bread, a corn muffin, baked beans, coleslaw, green beans and french fries. I tried all of their meats along with their green beans, garlic bread, baked beans and coleslaw. All delicious, but my go-to became the St. Louis ribs, dry, add some of their "Sizzle Sauce" (which is left on the table along with some other sauces), green beans and garlic bread. OMG. That's the move. Over and over. Now I only get one slice of garlic bread because who needs those carbs, but it's SO good. The meat and the green beans on repeat. Absolutely delicious and to keep the palette fresh I get a splash of some other meats for kicks. Lol. Value: $16.49 for my all you can eat bonanza that I described earlier. Like, how can you get any better?! 'Nuff said. In conclusion, every time I'm in Gainesville, I'm going to be here... still asking for Janinne, but it's cool when she's not there because their WHOLE staff is awesome. We saw this chain everywhere we drove through Florida. So we had to give it a try. And ordered SO much food!!! Corn fritters, hillbilly eggrolls, st. Louis ribs, sweet tea, A long island ice tea (Big Fail)..... Sadly my juicy tender ribs were placed on top. And the dried pork turkey textured ribs were on the bottom. With a couple of attempts to get my Long Island iced tea to not taste like water or water down lemonade, I ordered a whiskey shot to help it out. The bartender shook my whiskey in ice and put it in a glass. Who does that????? Shots are not chilled!!!! It was a glass of liquor scented water. The waitress was nice enough to delete the drink from the Bill. So the food was good. The waitress was very nice. But I don't think they have a bartender. Today I found out y'all changed your family packs. The food was good, but now my go to family packs don't include a gallon of sweet tea so I was really sad about that & no ribs. Oh well we all got fed & were satisfied. Also I've wrote before that Sonny's should get greens on the menu cuz you know that's a super barbecue side on this side of the country. First I have to say I have extremely fond memories of Sonny's bbq from when I lived in Florida. I brag to coworkers and friends back home about Sonny's and was excited to be able to have some during a trip down from DC to visit my daughter in college. With that being said Sonny's has lost their way. I ordered the brisket and jalapeño sausage and my wife ordered a pulled pork sandwich. Once the food came out both of our plates had cold meat on them. Not warm, not room temperature but cold. Cold to the point that the fat had congealed on the meat. It appeared they pulled it right out of the refrigerator, put it on a plate and forgot to warm it up. The bun on my wife's sandwich was hard. We also ordered loaded tater tots which was supposed to have all sorts of toppings on it. When it came out it was a plate of tater tots with some bbq sauce and ranch dressing drizzled over the top. I've never eaten inside of a Sonny's only had the food to go. I didn't realize the waiters did table service it was a complete shock to me. Everything on the menu looked so good with so many great options. The waitress was definitely on point and attentive to my party. I haven't had Sonny's in a lonnnnng while so I decided to order curbside pick-up from the Archer Rd location. Honestly, it was soooo good, I ordered and picked up 2 days in a row!! That's how good it was. Their St Louis dry rub ribs are delish! The meat was fall-off-the-bone good and so were their sides of fried okra, coleslaw and baked beans. The boxes were neatly stacked, no missing food, an abundance of extra sweet bbq sauce, wet naps and plastic utensils. No complaints at all Sonny's did not disappoint at all! I ordered a large catered order at the last minute. The manager, John, was able to fulfill my order with no problems, and he went above and beyond to accommodate my special requests. While placing the order, the cashier who answered the phone told me to hold on so she could check with management to see if they had enough food prepared to fulfill my request. John immediately told her to let's get the job done! Kudos to the entire team! Even the cook came out to greet me. I generally place large orders at this location often, but this time was indeed something special. I ordered a 4 piece St. Louis Ribs and when I got my food, they only gave me 3 ribs. Our server said they only gave me 3 because those 3 had lots of meat on them. This restaurant really deserves 3,5 stars as it is definitely above average, especially for a fast food, chain restaurant. We are from Minnesota where we don't have much in line for great BBQ joints. Still, we have enough experience with BBQ restaurants that we were very curious what a chain BBQ restaurant would be like. In any case, our hopes weren't real high, but we were hungry, on the road and ready for some good BBQ and along came Sonny's BBQ. Just driving up to the restaurant caused us to start salivating because of the luscious smoky smell in the air. When we walked in we were immediately led to our seats. The place looked clean with a nice atmosphere. Score. We ordered the BBQ Chicken platter and the pulled pork sandwich. If I was just rating the chicken platter I would for sure rate Sonny's a solid 4! The chicken was moist and super tasty. We dipped it in all of the various Sonny's sauces and liked the original 68 sauce so much we went ahead and bought a bottle. The waffle fries were hot and seasoned to perfection, while the side of beans was just warm and the corn muffin a little dry, but still pretty good. The pulled pork sandwich was good. The pork was not very hot and a little dry, and had the smallest amount of coleslaw on the top. This was hardly a topping of coleslaw - it was good, but there just wasn't enough of it. I would definitely recommend people to check out Sonny's BBQ as a solid Southern BBQ restaurant - a good representation even though it is a chain restaurant. Well done. read more

Sonny's a always delicious. They have great St Louis dry rub ribs! The coleslaw and bbq beans are a must as well. The servers are on top of their game every time. Don't forget to get a large cup glass of sweet tea. One last thing don't forget to get garlic toast with your meal. Sun. July 28, 2019 Date night dinner at Sonny's for Frank and I this evening. Definitely agreed that of the neighborhood Sonny's (there are approximately 3 around us) this Sonny's is by far the better one. Frank had the St. Louis Ribs, smoky. He enjoyed them.I did not taste them, but he said they were the best he's had in a while and they looked juicy. We are *not* fans of dry and overcooked ribs. These looked as close to perfect as perfect can be. I had for the first time at Sonny's the steak burger. Burger was cooked perfectly at medium rare just like I asked for it. The taste was phenomenal and I am kicking myself for waiting years to try this burger (I don't even know how long its been on the menu.) Burger came on a bun incorrectly, but our server Christian brought me garlic toast right away and I swapped my buns for the garlic toast. Corn on the cob was on point this evening as well.
