I have wanted to eat here for awhile after seeing all the excellent reviews so my husband and I visited this Saturday around 11am for brunch. We went during THE busiest time so we were lucky to find parking in the cramped but free parking lot. The hostess let us know there was a 35 min wait for indoor seating for 2. Outdoor seating was available, but we decided against it since it was a hot n sunny day in the 90s. We were ok with the wait and gave the hostess my name and phone number to get a text when the table was ready. While we waited, we walked to Serpentine plant shop across the parking lot and shopped a little. The text that our table was ready arrived 34 minutes so it was timed perfectly with the end of my shopping... we were seated soon after walking back into the restaurant. We had a corner table near the drink prep/coffee station so we had a front row seat to the preparing of many different teas and coffees while we decided what to order. A note about the table / seat size, we are skinny people and the seating fit us well but anyone somewhat wider would have trouble being comfortable. The high top tables might be a better option for those guests. The entire restaurant was packed when we came in and remained pretty full for our visit. There are 2 single-occupancy restrooms to the far left of the main entrance. They were clean enough and stocked appropriately. We were served by Jane and she answered all our menu questions. We ordered a cold matcha latte, chai latte, Mexican Coke, crispy potatoes, afternoon hash extra egg, 1/2 mushroom toast, and a turkey club no lettuce no bacon plus desserts (to go) chocolate chip cookie, puff pastry, and cinnamon roll. Jane brought out our to go desserts soon after the order. Our drinks arrived minutes after. However, our food took a bit longer (which we expected with a 100% full restaurant and Jane apologized for the wait, letting us know our food was on it's way about 20 minutes in) around 30 minutes. While we were waiting, there was punk rock / alt music in the background and a bunch of people's conversations going on so don't expect to have quiet dining if you go during a Saturday busy brunch. The Turkey Club was on thick Texas toast with dill in the mayo and tasted clean, fresh, like a delightful treat that grandma would make on a hot summer day. My husband's hash and crispy potatoes were the right amount of crunch and spice. The crispy potatoes had chunks of lime in it that were alarmingly sour but somehow complimented the dish. My mushroom toast had a delectable sauce topping with fresh scallions on french bread. We were very satisfied with our choices and had 1/2 my sandwich leftover plus our desserts to bring home. Many of the guests left empty plates when leaving so it seems their food is a hit! The only reason my "atmosphere" rating is missing a star is that our table was unfortunately near one of the restrooms so we would occasionally smell the disinfectant odor when someone opened the door. This was just a seating "feature" so of course it could not be helped. As far as other smells, we did notice that the kitchen, even if it was nearby, did not waft any fried food odors or smoke so their cooking area ventilation must be top-notch. All in all, a great foodie experience, cost about $100 with generous tip. Jane provided super customer service. I was very excited to visit Afternoon as I saw it was a Michelin recommended restaurant in Gainesville. The service was impeccable from start to finish. I entered the restaurant at 9:15 am with my guest and were seated promptly. Our server proceeded with our drink order in which we requested a vanilla and brown sugar iced latte and lemonade. My vanilla and brown sugar latte was made well and was quite refreshing. The lemonade was a bit sweet but overall a good beverage. However, as our experience continued it became a bit of a let down. We ordered the Dutch baby with seasonal fruit, the big break, a cinnamon roll, and the afternoon hash. From time of placing the order to receiving our food was an overall total of 45 minutes. A bit of a long wait for breakfast/brunch style items. The cinnamon roll was not done well whatsoever, the roll itself was over kneaded which created a thick and heavy dough. Not the fluffy type of cinnamon roll you would expect. When our food did come out the Dutch baby was partly burnt, it did not taste as such but it was a bit flat in regard to taste. The potatoes in the hash and the big break were burnt. I wouldn't consider it crispy because they were so overcooked I could barely get my fork to go through. The taste of the hollandaise did redeem the dish a tad, however for $90 including tip it was not the dining experience I would come back to. read more

Cute place and packed on a Saturday morning at 10 AM. We walked in and got on the list, waited about 25 minutes. A long line shortly ensued. How long did they wait? The parking lot looked ample but was full, we were able to park across the street. Coffees were good, standard fare and options for a coffee shop. They have a nice array of pastries. Service was fine, it took a good amount of time to get our order but it was worth the wait. I got avocado toast which was amazing. The avocado (mostly mashed) sat on top of wafer thin slices of cucumber, radish and onions. On top were 2 eggs and micro greens. All of this on a thick slice of sourdough. Excellent. This place is so fire every single time! It's collective aesthetic is top tier and every time I eat here I feel like I'm the main character in some indie film. The food itself is delicious and I love how fresh the ingredients are. The menu offers the perfect variety without including too many options. I like that they have seasonal items as well to keep things interesting. Next time I'm in Gainesville, I will be back! The service was so great, and the walkability to local stores was very stimulating. On my Gainesville matcha tour, my latest stop at afternoon has me running back for their seasonal rosemary mint Matcha latte. Afternoon also makes it so easy with their pick up window to save time from going inside to order, but you still get the friendly service at the window. In comparison to their typical syrups, this one really stands out. From the freshness of the mint and the earthy rosemary, this is such a great profile flavor to compliment an iced Matcha latte. The drink is presented so beautifully with a pretty green color mix mixed in with fresh mint leaves and rosemary. Food was delightful! We were there at 9 am as the restaurant opened. We had to wait several minutes as the people ahead of us in line were seated. The hostess was pretty rude after finding out that we didn't have a reservation. We were fine sitting outside on the patio with shade and fans. The patio was completely empty and the restaurant was 75% empty so we aren't sure why she was so put out with us arriving for our first visit without reservations. The rest of the staff made up for her rudeness by their friendliness and prompt attention. The food was fantastic! The French breakfast was delicious and the sourdough toast topped with whipped feta and tomatoes was a winner. Since it was a weekend day, we tried the cinnamon roll and they were great as well. I've tried to eat here a couple of times and it's always so busy. Went to try again last Saturday and was told it would be a 45 minute wait, which was fine, but we were told that we would have to eat outside with my boyfriend's service dog. We let the hostess know he was a service animal and we were told we still had to eat outside because "animals" aren't supposed to be inside the restaurant in case a health inspector comes, which is against the ADA rules for service animals so we left and decided to not go back. read more

I went here for the first time this past Sunday. It took probably 25 minutes to get our group of 3 seated (original estimate was 15 min so it was close) in the last hour they were open. We grabbed a couple coffees for the wait and camped out on the tiny bench by the bathrooms. The restaurant is super cute but it's pretty loud inside. We put our order in with a waitress who was basically trying to run away before we could finish adding our last item to the order. I split two sandwiches with a friend because we couldn't decide what we wanted and this gave us two options. One was the breakfast burger with a fried egg on it and the other was the turkey club. The sandwiches were great. We didn't get any sides with them. The third one of us got a salmon toast that was gigantic and a market salad that looked fresh and wonderful. No complaints on the food. It did take forever to get our order. I'm not sure if they have an undersized kitchen and it's always like this or if this visit was just abnormally slammed. Love coming here and every visit is such a treat. I got the chicken salad and burrito and split the potatoes with my bf. I also had a salted caramel iced latte with whole milk. Everything was delicious. The crispy potatoes are always a must for me. I love that they have seasonal offerings and they are always changing up the menu depending on what's in season. Service was good but server seemed to be annoyed at us because we were taking awhile to order and looked bothered . Other than that you can tell everything is made in house. I loved the chicken salad and I'm by no means a lover of them but this one changed my mind. Loved the pickles inside and the rye bread took me by surprise in a good way. Their potato chips that come with it are addicting and sliced thinly, it's amazing Joe they make their own instead of resorting to bagged. Went here 2 different times, both with similar experiences. We came on the weekend and were seated fairly quickly. Unfortunately, the food took over an hour both times to arrive, and the menu was out of the few items we really wanted to try. While the vibe is very cute and has a great atmosphere, the quality of food itself is subpar at best. For those who enjoy quality matcha, this is not the place. It was very milky and not strong. I got a Salmon Toast, and the bread was so rough, it hurt my jaw. The prices are also extremely steep for the portion of food you receive. If you do come here, I would say it is more for the vibes and photos than the food itself. However, sometimes the presentation will differ depending on the day (e.g. glass cups, plastic plates, etc). My favorite thing would definitely be the coffee, which is very tasty and worth the cost. Overall, I would only come if you have time to spare, as they are often backed up and really busy. read more

Finally, finally, FINALLY got the opportunity to try Afternoon. After hearing so many wonderful things about Afternoon, seeing pictures/posts on social media, etc. I made my way over to see what all the hype was about. Afternoon is a quaint brunch eatery serving up some unique, fresh dishes. They pride themselves on using high quality, local ingredients, as well as making very good coffee and pastries. It does get busy and you will most likely have to put your name down to wait for a table. With that being said, I would recommend arriving early to get your name on a waitlist, especially on the weekends. My friends and I arrived around 11:30 on a Saturday and had to wait roughly 30 minutes for a table for three. While we waited, we checked out a local plant shop called Serpentine that was near by to kill the time. When we got a text our table was ready, we promptly made our way over and seated right away. The inside is cute and they offer both indoor and outdoor seating. Our server was very sweet, but she did rush us to order a little, no big deal though. It was hard choosing just one thing to order and did take us a little while to make our decisions. Their menu does seasonally change, as do the pastries they offer. They do have specials and offer Dutch babies on the weekends, as well as cinnamon rolls. One thing I was disappointed by was the wait time for our food. It took probably between 30-40min for our food to come out after we ordered it. This was slightly frustrating. I do understand that they make everything from scratch and it is all prepared fresh to order, but this wait seemed a little long. It appeared that all the tables around us had to endure this wait as well. I ended up starting with a pastry, our server recommended the guava and cheese turnover. There was only one left, so she snagged it super quickly for me, which I appreciated. This was PHENOMENAL. Super flaky and buttery with a sweet guava filling that paired perfectly with cheese. A wonderful pastry, seriously couldn't praise this turnover enough and would highly recommend. Then we ordered our mains, I went with the Afternoon Hash with a side of Johnny Cakes. The hash includes their crispy potatoes, sautéed veggies, brown butter hollandaise, 2 eggs (your style), and choice of sausage or bacon. I went with scrambled eggs and sausage for my protein. As stated above, the food took a while to arrive, but when it did, oh boy was I excited to dive right in. My hash was fabulous. The potatoes were excellent and I can see why so many people like them. So crispy, with the perfect amount of seasonings. The sausage had a great savory, fennel taste to it and wasn't dry at all. The eggs were scrambled just right and the hollandaise tied the whole dish together. There weren't many sautéed veggies, but nonetheless the dish was a hit. The Johnny cakes were like cornmeal pancakes. They were a more savory than your traditional pancake, but were delicious with the maple syrup. My friends all enjoyed their dishes as well and agreed that we must return! We wanted to try a dutch baby, but weren't interested in the current flavor they were offering, maybe next time. Overall, Afternoon is a great brunch establishment in Gainesville serving brunch like no other. They had a great menu and there is surely something for everyone. Everything we ordered was great with the best flavors. Their pastries are a must and compliment the meal so well. My hash was one of the best breakfast hashes I've had in a while and I cannot say enough good things about those potatoes! My only reason for knocking a star was due to the really long wait for our food. The service is decent, but could be more attentive. The interior is cute and there is a nice ambiance. Cannot wait to return and explore more of their menu, and try their coffee too! read more

Not sure about that because I used to feel it was hit or miss and never consistently but I'll need to go back a few more times to really see consistent change. Came to this place after a UF graduation. Compared to other restaurants in the area it seemed pretty chill and nice. They don't take larger reservations, it was 8 of us. We made reservations. If the reservations were broken after the 45 minute deadline, they demand 15.00 per person. We went with it anyway....and...... 1) Less than attentive [understatement] waitstaff. 2) Tepid water. When I asked for ice water, I was brought a glass of ice after about 7-8 minutes. 3) When we finally ordered, we were told no substitutions for Texas Toast on the BLT [ah, well, white bread it is]. 4) We waited 47 minutes on un-cushioned seating to be told fairly brusquely, that it would be another 15 minutes. 5) We gave up. Overall decent place, however this would for me be a take out place not a sit down and eat place. Let me explain that statement. Food was incredible, potatoes were so crispy and tender at the same time. Cinnamon roll was actually nicely frosted and sugar started caramelizing on the bottom which was great! My husband's burrito was also great and my turkey club was filled with fresh ingredients and very generously lathered with sauce, bread was good too. When it somes to service and general feeling of the place is where "afternoon" falls behind. We were waiting to be seated/talked to for a while in the small entrance while people were trying to come in and out, our waitress was okay but she definitely entered our personal spaces every time she was there. Place is pricey, my husband's late was $7.50, which is very steep for caramel, shot of espresso, and cup of milk. They also have a big fly problem, inside and outside which i thought was because of the nearby farms, however when i looked at the map, that was not the case. Bathrooms were decently clean. To sum it up food- delicious and fantastic, service, ambiance and vibe can use some work. P.S My ratings are based on whether I believe I could make a better or healthier version at home. This is one of my go to breakfast and brunch places in Gainesville! Definitely has the hipster vibes. The people working here are super friendly and I love the simple yet quaint ambiance. The food is solid. I got a salad here last time, and really loved the bacon jam and the vinaigrette. The bacon jam provided the right balance of sweet and salty while the vinaigrette provided just the right amount of sour zing. This all contrasts well with the bitterness of the arugula and richness of the poached egg. Yes, getting a table can be hard at times, and parking is not always ideal. But I think if you are in town, do give them a try :) read more

I had a lavender oat milk latte and this might be one of the best coffees in Gainesville. Their pastries are also not to be missed the guava pastry is a favorite of ours. The food has been historically great here, but the service today has made it to where I don't plan on returning. After waiting 45min for a table (which was fine) we were finally seated and the food took an hour and fifteen minutes to come out. Our waitress also only checked on us one time during this period and did not give any updates on the food or apologize for the wait. Iced mocha was yummy! I came in at 3:15 and was not greeted for a good 2 mins although many staff members walked by and then I finally got sat and the table was dirty. I was alone and ordered quickly and there was a group of people who came in after me. My waitress was nice and explained the menu to me thoroughly but it was weird hearing the staff talk loudly about people coming in late and how they hate this and that from customers... the French toast was soggy and wet. Now they have waitstaff so long are the days where we are getting up and ordering in line ourselves! OMG game changer! Love it what a great addition to the restaurant. Outdoor eating is usually not my thing but on this day it was perfect! No bugs or flies and the weather was not too hot either. I got an iced matcha with half an avocado toast and scrambled eggs. I got half because I thought half meant one slice but it actually means half of slice smh ‍ did not know that but that's what happens when you assume so don't be like me and ask! One of my absolute favorite places in Gainesville to eat breakfast right now. Not only is the food delicious but the vibe within is fantastic. I've eaten here many times and love how the menu occasionally changes with new updates and new dishes to try. Today we tried the Mushroom Tartine and the Turkish Eggs. The Turkish Eggs were full of fresh herbs and spices that had me happy with every bite. The Mushroom Tartine was full of garlic and the mushrooms were delicious. Next time I'm going to go back to my classic order of the Crispy Potato's and the Chicken Karaage and Johnny Cakes.
