Afternoon dental appointment brought me to the Woodyard Grill in Newberry on the way home for a late lunch... I was initially going to grab a grilled chicken salad, but I didn't see it on the menu; So, I opted for the chicken tenders with sweet potato fries and coleslaw. I was seated promptly, and the dinner order was served pretty quickly, and everything looked awesome. The waitress was professional and cordial enough, though I forgot to get her name... The chicken tenders were cooked nicely, moist and seasoned well. While the sweet potato fries were spot on and the coleslaw was tasty. It was a very cold today and the restaurant was a little cool for an old fella trying to get warm... But it wasn't freezing. I'm just old. Overall, the food was good, as usual. WOODYARD Grill has always been a favorite place for us to eat when we are visiting family in Newberry. The sliced pork and barbecue sauce is so delicious. This visit was our first time eating breakfast here. I wanted a sliced pork biscuit. It was not on the breakfast menu and I asked if they would make one for me. Baby back ribs are not good. They were dry, cold and overcooked. Baked beans tasted like canned beans with spicy BBQ sauce. Fries were overcooked and hard. Was not worth the $18. Sweet tea was all sugar. Waitress checked on us every couple minutes. Restaurant was clean and bright. One of the waitresses was talking loudly and carrying on immaturity with one of the customers. Recently had the best Woodyard Grill experience the other day for lunch. I don't know if it was due to the recent change in management or going for lunch but my service was good, wait was minimal, and food was delicious. I got the BBQ pork chop for the first time and it's my new favorite menu item- super thick tender pork. The Lima beans were shockingly good. The seasoning and the pork in them was spot on. The cole slaw and Texas toast were good too but nothing special. 4 stars for now for just overall past experiences but this was my best visit yet and for the first time I'm looking forward to going back. read more

We had ribs there a couple of times in July of 2022. They were the best ribs EVER. We have been back 4 times or so since and the ribs have not been even close. Not "falling off the bone" anymore. I am not sure if ownership changed but something is not the same. Food just doesn't seem to be as good and we have decided to not eat there anymore. Staff was so friendly and so inquisitive about our experience there the first 2 visits but that has changed as well. Staff is still good but not like our first 2 visits. One of the few restaurants out here in newberry but it is delicious. It is no wonder it stays busy even with the pandemic. Unfortunately I have not been able to visit the inside of the restaurant but I recently ordered some take out from here and it was amazing! The pork was so tender and their sauce was saucy but not over done. They give you some big portions and all at a great price too. If you are looking to support local go ahead and shoot this restaurant to the top of your list because it is worth keeping around for the long haul! read more

Pros: The draft beer was cold and not flat. Our server was very nice and kept checking on us to make sure we had our drinks. Onion rings are cooked well, they're a good size and crunchy. Con: We started out ordering two Bloody Mary's. They were literally two pints of tomato juice with no vodka. $10.00 each!! Worse Bloody Mary I ever had. The food servings are very small. We ordered the 1/4 BBQ chicken. One plate came with a thigh and leg. The other plate came with some strangely carved breast. We sent that back and asked for a thigh and leg like the other plate. The chicken thighs and leg had five small bites of meat total. Smallest chicken leg I've ever seen. The baked potato was good but the green beans were cold. Our bill was $77.00 plus tip. This is what sucks when you're trying out a new place and want to try a selection of things to know what's worth it. It was filling, and all but the pork stood out (good garlic toast, good beans, nice ribs, fries were excellent, and tea was good too). The service was decent enough. The waitresses were all friendly and somewhat attentive. It wasn't the busiest when I was there, so I feel like it could've been a bit better (had to actively look like I needed something to get someone's attention). They did seem to have good rapport with the usuals thiug Overall, the ribs were tasty, as were the baked beans, the garlic toast, and the fries. I could live without the pork. It was nothing to write home about, and there are better places closer to home for me. If I'm ever back in the area and starving, I'd go again, but I'm not making any special trips just to go here. I went here with a group of friends last week with high hopes. The reviews so far on this place have been very good, so the experience we had was surprising. Very surprising. Let's get to it... I remember this place from before it was Woodyard Grill. Back then it was Newberry's Deli and Grill it was more of a breakfast and brunch kind of place, with a more rustic home-town feel. Now, it reminds me of a country barbecue place that had a head-on collision with a Hooters. I will say that the interior has been beautifully redone, as the Deli and Grill had seen better times. The wait staff taking orders and bringing out food appeared to be all-female, dressed in black booty-shorts. I had to check the sign out front a second time to be sure there wasn't an owl on it. They were all nice, don't get me wrong, but an image is set right when you walk in the door. Our first problem came right at the beginning. One of our folks had a dog, and he did the responsible thing and called ahead to find out if dogs were allowed on the patio area. The response he got on the phone was that it would not be a problem. However, once he got there, he was turned away with a no dogs policy. He had to take the dog home (about a fifteen minute trip each way). There is obviously some miscommunication on policies at the place. We were seated outside and our drink orders were taken and brought out. We even got some appetizers ordered up. I ordered water, but one member of our group ordered a Dr. Pepper that turned out to be watery. Time to inspect those mixture proportions! Our one missing person showed up again sans dog, and the appetizers arrived shortly afterwards. One of the things that did not happen with our table was that there was no silverware. When asked, they brought out cutlery for the one person that asked. We then had to ask again for the rest of us, at which point they had to go back inside the building and get more, which means that they have no wait stations for keeping things like cutlery, napkins, or other items necessary for maintaining tables except inside, despite half of their seating being outside. I had ordered some wings (hot) and the other end of the table ordered some mild. The mild wings were probably a step or two above mild, and may have generated complaints from anyone looking for truly mild wings. Meanwhile, my hot wings were anything but. They were spicier than the mild (despite claims from others) but in my book they were mild, and the addition of your standard hot sauce from the store would have brightened them up. Throw in that they were relatively scrawny and I would rate their wings as less than average. There are two issues with sitting outside here. One is that the road noise can be extreme because the clientele typically drive large pickup trucks with exhaust systems that were not meant to actually reduce noise.The second is that when they have the fires running you have a problem of ash falling down on your food and into your drinks, which is taking barbecue a bit far. After waiting for twenty minutes, our waitress came back and took our food orders. I ordered the Woodyard Burger, which is a cheeseburger with onion supposedly cooked in the meat itself and coleslaw on the burger. This can be very tasty when done right... key words there. We also had ordered an impossible burger and the ribs, among other things. My burger just didn't have any taste. I could taste the coleslaw, but that was about it. The burger meat and everything else was simply bland. The ribs tasted as if they had not been truly smoked, but instead someone had gotten into a fight with a toddler over a bottle of liquid smoke. Apparently the impossible burger was even worse. It was bland, dry, and there were extra pickles on it instead of no pickles as ordered. To their credit, this was taken off of the bill, as the person that ordered it took all of two bites. It was about this time that the karaoke started. I will give the guy running the karaoke credit in that he was good, and the first half dozen or so songs that were performed by various people were also decent. Eventually liquid courage from the bar gets people up there that should never try to hold a tune. I am not giving the rating I am giving because of the karaoke, however. That is one of those elements that some restaurants have. However, the volume level of the music was on the wrong side of what should be appropriate, so they get a hit for that. This was what eventually forced us to leave, by the by. There were some good things. The fries were very good, and an interesting shape (one that I have not seen, actually). The garlic bread was apparently also quite good. That's it. So yes, that is what I experienced. I really did have high hopes for this place, because the other reports from my fellow Yelpers have all been so good. I just... I can't give them a good rating myself. It was not good. I honestly don't get the 5 star reviews. Pros: It's close to my house, the curly fries were good. Cons: The rest of our food was bland and cold. I got the BBQ pork and it was thin slices of cold unseasoned meat, with unseasoned sweet potato fries and "blackened" broccoli that was not blackened, not seasoned, and mushy. The wait staff (all female) walk around in tiny shorts and the owner is a older man who hugs them a lot. If it was corporate owned, this place would be an HR nightmare. The absolutely wonderful waitress was so kind and patient with my 42 year old brother who doesn't know how to read. She politely walked him through finding what he wanted to order with no hesitation. Woodyard is good for what it is. It's the only bbq sit down place that also you can order liquor drinks at in Newberry. It's not award winning, blow your mind, phenomenal bbq. It is however good bbq and has lots of options for sandwiches, meals, appetizers, salads, etc. They have outside seating too and pre-COVID, had karaoke Friday nights which was entertainment if nothing else to sit and watch with a group over drinks. I would say if you are hungry for some basic bbq, hit them up but if you're willing to drive to Jonesville, TopHog gets my money on better food. read more

I have read the reviews both positive and negative, I have looked at the pictures, and I have even tasted it when a friend had it! I can now finally say I have ate at Woodyard Grill and it was amazing! I first heard of this place on facebook and it took me a while to visit. My good friend Justin host karaoke every Friday night at Woodyard Grill and I have been meaning to try it out! This past weekend I finally made it a reality and went in for some bbq. I went in on Sunday where they have slightly different hours than the rest of the week. I believe they close at 3 on Sundays. I was sat and the waitress came and took our order. I decided to get the Corn Nuggets for an appetizer and then a half rack of ribs spare ribs with 2 sides and bread. My sides were the mac and cheese and baked beans. Unfortunately they did not give me the bread, but I was okay with it, I did not need all those carbs. The corn nuggets were awesome! They had a ton of corn in each bit and were served with ranch dressing. The corn nuggets you could tell were fresh and they were hot when you bit into them. The Spare Ribs were awesome! They fell off the bone and had a ton of flavor when you bit into them. They did not even need sauce, but I did add a little because the sauce was so good. The sauce tasted like what my dad used to make at home when he made his own bbq sauce. The baked beans had a lot of flavor and you could tell their were different types of beans in the baked beans! It was great tasting! The inside of this place is really nice and they have a large bar area and some seating outside. I did decide to eat outside, but it got hot! But this was my own fault! Overall I really enjoyed my first experience to Woodyard Grill. I will for sure be back and would love to try more of this awesome menu! read more

This was such a disappointing experience. We weren't brought enough menus to our party until we asked for them. The sliced pork I ordered was dry, bland and cold. I also ordered sweet potatoes which had an okay texture but again, NOTHING tasted like it was seasoned. Some of the sides came in plates small enough to be sauce cups. The blackened broccoli that I had as a side came with only 4 broccolis, cold and unseasoned. I would understand the lack of seasoning if their sauce selection was better but they only offered 4 sauces including ketchup. They also had sangria pitchers on their drink menu only to be told that "sometimes they have it and sometimes they don't." I decided after a couple of bites that the calories weren't worth it and left the restaurant hungry. read more

We went to Woodyard Grill which is a new restaurant that opened in Newberry. It was lunchtime and the parking lot was full. They had both outside and inside tables. We had to take what we could and ended up with an inside table. I downgraded this place to a 4 star because our waitress as not the best. It took awhile for our drink order to come. She got the orders right and brought help to serve a table of six. I ordered the smoked turkey platter that came with two sides. The turkey was fresh and smoked just right. The green beans and sweet potato fries were just OK.... Another reason for the down grade to 4. I expect HOT fries and these were like warm. The green beans tasted ok but were a little mushy.
