    #4 catfish and wings

Y'all, RUN, don't walk, to Hook's. I've lived in Gainesville since 1997, it's easily the best chicken and catfish restaurant in town. I've been doordashing recently and have had SEVERAL offers from there, there is not a restaurant in town that will have my mouth watering during the delivery like Hook's. Do yourself a favor: get the wings and catfish combo, add lemon pepper, dash some hot sauce, and enjoy one of the best meals you'll ever have.

First time finally going here. I must say food is definitely good and hot. But they needs to remodel the building.

We sat at the bar, and were greeted by one of the bartenders and took our drink order. We saw the fried blue crab claws, and figured we would give it a shot. Well, they were just okay, nothing that we would probably order again. Wife had the crab cakes and loved them, very good. I had the chicken and grits. I was excited until it showed up. I could tell just by looking at this super thin fried chicken, that it was going to be rock solid. I was right. The chicken was tough, chewy and stringy. It was cooked well past well done. I tried to eat it, I don't like to complain, but I could only get about 3 bits into it. I pushed it away. When one of the bartenders came by and was taking it away without even asking why an entire plate is being thrown away without hardly any food eaten. So I said it was way overcooked, and inedible, he didn't even respond, just took it and threw it away. No questions. No offer to get something else, just walked away. After that we decided we would go somewhere else, when we got the bill, it was still on there. That was very unprofessional, and I don't think we will be coming back anytime soon.

However, in its place is Temoo! I have now tried them, and the food isn't bad at all! They have only just recently opened and they are still trying to get their feet under them properly, but I ordered the gyro sandwich and five wings and they came out in a reasonable amount of time for having been prepared fresh. Quick note about the wings: Five doesn't sound like a lot, but they are both the drumette and flat together, so by other wing places' standards, it is more like ten wings! They have a variety of sauces, and I went for the mango habanero. It is definitely more sweet than spicy, but still tasty. The sauce distribution wasn't great, and there was a large pool of the sauce that was acting more like a dipping sauce than a tossed sauce. The gyro was pretty standard... the meat for it didn't seem prepackaged, which was a good sign, and it held up well. There is better in town, but this one holds up against most of the locations in town that make gyros. There is seating outside, under a shelter with four picnic tables, so at least you can eat under some shade during the summer months. The workers there were pleasant enough, and they brought my food out to me while I waited under the shelter. Final analysis though? Sadly, I don't see this place surviving unless they can come up with a menu item that truly brings people flocking to their doors. It's NOT about their food, though... their food is fine, and if they were located in some other location in town they would probably do decently. It is purely the location: the parking here is minimal, getting into the place is a rough stop on the brakes with traffic coming up behind you at breakneck speeds, and there simply isn't enough other commercial industry in the area to support them well. I truly hope that my prediction here doesn't come true.

I waited an hour with only one person in front of me and had to ask for napkins, sauces and utensil. I want this to succeed since I loved when they had a different name but their quality was solid. Their food is just missing a special touch . Maybe I'll wait once they get their footing but I want them to figure out the kinks. One of the ladies told my coworker that the reason I had no seasoning in my fries but she did was because the owner was the one that made my coworkers. I just wonder why they don't follow the owners lead.

Gainesville Seafood, out on the Eastern end of town, is that place. It may not be the easiest spot to stumble upon, but that's part of its charm. This is the kind of hidden gem that loyal regulars keep quietly to themselves, the sort of place that feels like a reward for those willing to seek it out. The atmosphere is relaxed and unpretentious, the kind of no-frills setting that lets the food do all the talking. I went for a seafood platter, which was shrimp and fish with fries. They have a variety of different kinds of fish available that you can pick from, which is a nice touch. It gives the meal a sense of personalization that you don't always find at casual seafood spots. I went with the flounder, and it turned out to be an easy choice to feel good about. The platter was generously portioned, the kind of meal that leaves you satisfied without the need to contemplate dessert. All of it was excellent. The flounder was light and flaky on the inside, with a crisp golden crust that had clearly seen well-seasoned oil and confident hands in the kitchen. The shrimp were equally well-executed. They were plump, tender, and fried just right, without any of the rubbery disappointment that lesser seafood joints often deliver. Even the fries held their own, providing a solid, starchy counterpoint to all that seafood goodness. The wait wasn't at all bad either, which is worth mentioning because a place this good can often mean a crowd. Service was attentive without being overbearing, and the whole experience moved at a comfortable, easy pace. Whether you're a Gainesville local or just passing through, Gainesville Seafood is the kind of place worth going a little out of your way for, and once you've been, you'll understand why people keep coming back.

It was busy, but it wasn't pretentious, which is what I was looking for. A couple of tables setup outside for customers, and inside a bench or two for those waiting for their food. The place serves in two different ways... first, they are a fish market, and you can get a large variety of different seafoods there. Prices aren't bad, certainly better than other shops in the same area, and a lot more variety as well. Inside, I went through the menu that they have. They are a counter service as well as the fish market, and you can get a number of different items cooked up right there to eat. I went for a cod sandwich and fries, which was the closest thing they had to fish and chips. The wait was nominal, as they had to fry up the food and get the fries together. Staff were pleasant, despite the apparent rush, and I got my food in short order. Eating it was a good time. The sandwich was excellent. The fries... they were good initially, but they don't really hold up over time. Not a big deal if you are sitting there and eating them immediately, though. Only open Friday through Sunday, they offer a limited selection with monthly rotating flavors, so expect lines out the door. Knowing to expect a line, especially during move-in weekend, my family and I got there about 10min before opening at 10am. There was already a line wrapped around the block! We ended up waiting in line for about 50min before ordering. Shortly after we ordered and sat down to enjoy our donuts, one of the owners notified everyone there was a limited selection left and it was likely not everyone would receive donuts. So if you are planning on visiting, just be aware of this! The service was excellent and extremely pleasant. The co-owner serving the donuts was super sweet and personable. This husband and wife team run a tight ship and really do their best to serve everyone to their best ability! The inside is quant, but there are a couple of seating options. We appreciated the nostalgic atmosphere and decor throughout. We got to the counter at the perfect time as they were just about out of the brioche. While unable to snag one of the brioche donuts, we were able to try 3/4 brioche filled and 5 of the vegan glazed. All the donuts were genuinely phenomenal and you couldn't tell the vegan glazed was vegan at all. The brioche filled donuts were super pillowy, with ample amounts of luscious cream filling. All the flavors were distinct and very good--you can tell they use fresh, high-quality ingredients. I thoroughly enjoyed the brownie filled brioche and thought the filling was divine, almost reminded me of chocolate mousse! The vegan glazed were also great with a wonderful texture. They too were soft and very fresh, each with good flavor. I honestly enjoyed all 5 of the flavors we tried, especially the Arnold Palmer and Cherry Crumble! Overall, Flatfish GNV was most definitely worth as the hype and praise! The donuts are truly something special, with lovely presentation, flavor, and most importantly texture. The donuts themselves are large too and I definitely think the price is justified. They use great ingredients and it shows in the product they output. While the lines can get long, don't let that intimidate you! The service was perfect and this husband & wife team does a wonderful job running their donut shop. No major issues with the store, not the cleanest, brightest or comfortable place to shop, but the prices are reasonable for a meat/seafood market and they have all of the fixins' needed for a Sunday dinner after church! This day, I visited the walk-up window as I was craving a crab tray with all of the works. The woman behind the counter is the same one that's always there. What I've learned is that initially, I'm always underwhelmed by the customer service lol. She'll talk on the phone the entire order BUT she will get that order! I appreciate that the few times I have completed an order with her, she does give me a big smile and salutations and it truly goes a long way so I won't say that the service is beyond poor at all. The woman taking my order informed me that there were no more crabs which was understandable because I visited 30min before closing. I decided on a full Garlic Shrimp tray and 2 pieces of corn, 2 potatoes and 1 sausage (Heads Up: they are NOT included in the trays!!) I waited about 15 min or less and my order was ready, not a terrible wait in my eyes for seafood. I loved the sauce (although I'm regretting all of that butter today) and loved the corn & potatoes which are pretty hard to mess up. (I will say that those TWO potatoes = two slices of a potato, which is essentially 1/4th of a full potato... they should work on that math because the portion was beyond disappointing.) Both the sausage and the shrimp all tasted like they had been under a burner for hours, as they were overcooked like crazy. The full tray comes with 10 Shrimp but it seems that they gave me a little extra which I appreciate, but I only ate about 4 of them because they were so chewy. :( There's an art to Shrimp and that goes out of the window if they're not fresh or simply being reheated. I truly wish there were more seafood options in the city or I wouldn't have felt so desperate to go here! I appreciate the store, the available options and the smiles, but I don't think I will be coming back for another tray.
