This place is in a small plaza a few minutes away from Source mall. It's a hidden gem - a great place to come with family or a big party. The food and side dishes were all made with care and was delicious. I had the bulgogi soup kind of dish with my mom and it was soo filling and reminded me of a rich shabu shabu. I'm not their family member. And I was not paid to write this review. Korean restaurants are starting to pop up everywhere. But I saw this new place open via the OC Weekly, so I came to give it a try. The staff were very friendly and immediately seated me. I had to get my order to-go, however, when something came up at work. You can imagine my surprise when the staff not only packaged my order perfectly but they doubled the side dishes. Not sure if that was in response to my enormity but I'll take double side dishes any day. The braised beef short ribs were delicious and so were the side dishes. This should last me a couple of days. We waited 6 months for the old owners of Hwang Hae Do to open this new restaurant!!! So very happy it's finally open! Back to our home style Korean food! Food is excellent as before! This new location is huge and can accommodate large parties. Very clean. Very open. They do not do tabletop KBBQ anymore. Parking is a lot shared by other businesses. My kids love it! We do miss our old servers tho... but the new ones are just as nice. Get yourself a slurpy next door at 7-11. Growing up eating home-cooked Korean food, it was always difficult to find a Korean restaurant that hit the spot (even in ktown) and made me feel like I was just paying to eat mediocre food that I could make/ get at home. Sonamu has the BEST side dishes I have ever had in any Korean restaurant TO DATE. I ordered the bossam combo with bean stew and the stir fried squid with noodle. Bossam was hands- down the best I have had and priced extremely fairly for the amount you get along with the soup and rice. The stir-fried squid-- a ton of food. Definitely could be shared among at least 3-4 people! Even from LA, this place is WORTH THE DRIVE and the gas $$ and my new go-to restaurant when I'm in the OC area. Also if someone asks me the place to go for authentic Korean food, I'm definitely recommending Sonamu. I never write reviews, but this place checks all the boxes. Amazing Restaurant /Food & Customer Service! I came here for lunch on Christmas Eve with my significant other & parents. The staff was extremely attentive and kind. Plenty of choices in their lunch menu & everything that we ordered was satisfying. I also ordered galbijjim $40 to go for my son and husband It had the saddest 4 chunks of meat about 5cm by 4cm and 2 additional empty bones. I was eating at this restaurant when it was still The Tofu Shop. Not every good review equals someone's family member. I'm so glad there's an authentic Korean restaurant on my way home from work. I come here once a week to get their seafood tofu stew. For about $12, you get the tofu stew, a bunch of fresh veggie side dishes, a fish filet, and rice. This is an amazing deal! The old owner of Hwang Hae Do in Garden Grove opened this place. Still same great food and good atmosphere with this huge place. Not used to the servers here yet but they're very nice. After the new ownership, their foods became totally lower grade. We used to go there often when their name was 'Tofu House'. We usually order their Pork Kalbi, Spicy Fish Soup and Bibim Nangmyun. They used to have healthy and unique side dishes as well. However, now their Pork Kalbi and other dishes are joke. Don't even think that it is the same quality foods as before. Instead of grilling the meat, they probably boiled the meat with water with some sauce. Basically you can taste nothing and the texture of meat was exactly like canned Tuna. The bibim nangmyun was way too sweet. Even the server admitted that the foods are not the same quality as before. She kept apologizing to us, but there was no refund or no replacement whatsoever. We left most our food uneaten, but paid full amount. My biz partner had the similar experience in here. Highly not recommended!!! This place is a JOKE, and there is no way I will ever be coming to this establishment ever again. When my family and I went on an early Friday night, Sonamu was about half-occupied, so it was not busy at all (important to note for the rest of the review). The place was clean and decent-looking enough, which shouldn't be a surprise since the place opened up recently. We placed our order without much incident, but when the food came out, everything was consistently bland. Being a Korean myself, I know what Korean food is supposed to taste like, and every single dish had the same issue of not being flavored properly. The basic ingredients were there, and the dishes served looked like Korean food, but the taste was sorely lacking. So the food wasn't too great, but that doesn't necessarily warrant a 1-star review, right? Okay. Let's talk about the service at this place. Wait, there were waitresses working here? It sure didn't seem like it. There appeared to be 4 "waitresses" working at the time of our dining experience, and one of them even came over to take our order, so this place apparently does have "waitresses"... but after taking our order and giving us our food, we literally never saw a "waitress" come within 10 feet of our table. Now, I've been to Korean restaurants before and I know how they operate (most have the little table calling buttons, and having to raise your hand and voice is not uncalled for; I understand all of this and know that this is what to expect at a Korean restaurant). It's rather difficult to get the attention of a "waitress" when they all avoid eye contact and don't even walk around the restaurant AT ALL (and of course, no table calling buttons). What were these "waitresses" doing instead of doing the bare minimum of patrolling the restaurant grounds? I saw TWO waitresses attempting to look busy by looking over some receipts at the cash register. This was pretty much the only sign that these "waitresses" actually existed, because otherwise they would hide behind the counter and do their best to be seen as little as possible. Oh, and this inattention from the "waitresses" was not isolated to just me and my family; we saw another group of poor souls who had the misfortune of being seated in the "large group" tables in a corner of the restaurant. Someone from this group had to go up TWICE to ask a waitress to come and take their orders after they had been seated. Having to ask once is somewhat excusable, but twice is absolutely not. One could perhaps justify the behavior of the "waitresses" by saying that the place was extremely busy, but, as noted earlier, the place was literally half-full. Simply inexcusable, and one of the worst customer service experiences that I have ever had. Sonamu supposedly has a lunch bulgogi special which is apparently why people talk about this place at all. We didn't get to try it because we went for dinner, but from what we saw, this place has serious organizational issues that warrant never coming back here again. read more

I used to go to Hwang-hae-do when I was young. So I was so excited that they opened a new place. I guess I should have ordered their signature dish - yuksu bulgogi. Ordered their cold noodle, both style. Not particularly better than other places. Pork katsu was a mistake. I don't know why but the meat and the batter were not together like other katsu.
