I think we just found our new soondae spot. Hands down the best chapsal (sweet rice) soondae I've ever had. We love soondae and usually try it wherever it's available, but most places in OC are pretty average. That all changed when we found Abbaee Wang Soondae. The interior isn't fancy--it's an old-school, hole-in-the-wall, mom-and-pop type of place where it looks like more orders are to-go than dine-in. But honestly, that's usually where the best food is. We came with my parents and ordered the Soondae Jungsik, which comes with a bowl of soondaetang and a soondae plate. We also got the bossam. The soondaetang was solid--mixed pieces of soondae in a mildly spicy broth with veggies. Pretty classic and comforting. But the chapsal soondae on the plate was the real star. It had an incredibly clean flavor with a perfectly chewy texture. Truly the best I've had anywhere. I honestly wish we ordered an entire plate dedicated just to that. The bossam was also super clean, tender, and fresh. None of the dishes had that strong smell that can sometimes come with these types of meats, which shows how well they prepare everything. The restaurant is located in a small retail shopping center, but the accessibility isn't ideal due to its position at a busy intersection. The atmosphere could definitely use some improvement--a few food photos were simply propped up against the wall near the entrance, and the reception area felt a bit chaotic. Overall, the space didn't feel particularly warm or inviting for customers. We ordered takeout, and while the 순대국 (blood sausage soup) was excellent and tasted authentic, the 모듬순대 (assorted blood sausages) with three different types was a bit disappointing. I really wanted to like this place, but it was pure disappointment. I was craving real blood sausage - not the cheap glass noodle filled ones. I drove from LA just for the authentic abaee soondae, and ordered the soondae soup combo. I got 4 pieces of abaee soondae and the other 20 pieces were the cheap glass noodle ones. I couldn't find any abaee soondae in the soup as well. Swollen and mushy glass noodle soondae soup is the worst. Felt like I got scammed. Also, the food was extremely bland. read more

I specifically drive all the way down here while visiting to eat their 모듬 순대 (variety soondae) and gajami shikae-- there's no place anywhere else that makes the type they do. The perfect mom and pop shop for soondae. I find it really hard to come across good authentic soondae shops, however, I will always be coming back here. I have been coming to this shop since childhood, and they have never failed to impress me with their amazing quality and great service. Best soondae in OC! I only eat the chapssal soondae but they also offer the ones stuffed with ground meat (spicy & non spicy). Chapssal translate to sweet rice. I love how soft and chewy it is! I got the assorted soondae and jokbal, and it was just okay. I've been craving jokbal for a while now and didn't want to drive to LA with gas prices the way they are (I'm still in search of some decent jokbal in the OC!) I remembered a few people recommending Abbaee Wang Soondae so I called in an order. First of all, the jokbal was better than I expected. I was looking for the soft, gelatinous type I loved in Korea, but most places in the OC area have the thinly sliced harder type with less collagen. Despite this, the flavors were good and I was pleasantly surprised. The soondae looked great in pictures and I was excited about the many varieties of soondae they offered. Sadly, it was a pretty big disappointment. This may actually be a matter of preference though. I grew up eating soondae from Seoul Soondae in Garden Grove, so I'm used to the much darker soondae (so sad they're gone now!) If you like lighter soondae with more veggies, this may really hit the spot for you. I just prefer a simpler soondae with lots of blood and noodles.. I may just have to go to the Seoul Soondae in Cerritos or get the packaged one they sell at the market to get my fixing. The regular soondae was decent once I dipped it in some cup tteokbokki I had at home, but one thing I REALLY did not like was the soondae in the innards. I love innards, but this one actually smelled like the body part it was from (or what it once held, hahaha) so I had to throw it out. I won't be back for the soondae, but might come back for the jokbal if I can't make it to LA or Sisters in Cerritos. read more

Soondae is a Korean style blood sausage made from pork and sweet glutinous rice or potato starch vermicelli noodles (dangmyeon) stuffed into an intestinal casing. It is a very popular snack food often sold by street vendors in South Korea. Those who enjoy soondae will love the variations of it prepared at Abbaee Wang Soondae. They serve a full spectrum of soondae dishes, including the three traditional ways Koreans like to prepare it: 1) Steamed, with sides of steamed liver and stomach. 2) Boiled as a soup/stew, Soondaetang, $8.99 - with fermented soybean paste (doenjang), cabbage, and more embellishments, including organ meat. 3) Stir-fried, Soondae-Bokkeum, $10.99 (S) $18.99 (L) - with dangmyeon, onions, garlic, perilla leaves, cabbage and mixed with fermented chili paste (gochujang). It is nice to have another option to Seoul Soondae. The soondae made here may lack a little of the brooding spice and that iron rich taste of blood from soondae prepared at the famous restaurant chain. The soondae at Seoul Soondae also has a better texture: slightly chewier and more firm. Abbaee Wang Soondae, however, has a variety of different tasty soondae options that Seoul Soondae does not.
