The back of my mind is just the pounds of sugar in his recipes, but oh well! Located in a strip mall, with many Korean restaurant contenders, Mr. Paik has a pretty steady trickle of customers. You order at the counter and pick up once your beeper buzzes. I ordered a jjajjangmyun (black bean noodle) and tangsyuyuk (fried pork) to share with my sister. The portion makes sense with the price. I must say the best experience is to eat there while the food is piping hot. Mr. Paik hands down the best jjajjangmyun and tangsyuyuk that I had... the texture, sauce and everything was just perfect. Parking lot can get crowded on the weekends around dinner time. Originally we tried to go to Sup next door but with the wait being 1hr + we pivoted and decided to check out Paik's Noodle. Right when you walk in, you'll go to the counter and order before seating yourself. You'll also fetch your own water and napkins. Our table of 3 got the following to share: 1. Jajangmyeon: Comes with pork and veggies and lots of black bean sauce! This dish was very flavorful and I enjoyed the nice chew of the noodles. I did feel extremely thirsty after the meal though, and I think this may have played a big part in that with all the flavor haha 9. Beef Jjamppong: It was nice to get some additional veggies in and some soupy goodness, but I still preferred the experience of the Jajangmyeon more. First time here, my friend mentioned his favorite jjajang myun in LA was Paik's noodle. I forgot we had one in the OC too. I remembered why I forgot, because I hate coming to this plaza! Lol. Shared space with so many high traffic shops like Hmart, Daiso, 85 bakery and Kang Hodong Baek Jong Kbbq. We were lucky to find a spot at 6:30pm on a Friday. We decided to eat out in the patio area since the weather was nice. The jjajang myun was really good. What stood out was how chewy the noodles were. And their yellow pickled radish had a nice tang to it, not too sweet. I also liked that they have 2 filtered water machines that dispenses both hot and cold water from copay. After eating jjajangmyeon last night, my wife wanted more. This time, we decided on an old favorite...Paik's Noodle in Buena Park. I first tried it when I went to Santa Clara for training and was excited when I found one within an hour's drive. There are differences but offer the same standard fare. Paik's Noodle features chef Paik, a renown Korean chef. My wife knows this with her BTS obsession. He owns a few restaurants in Korea and is well-versed in Korean culture and cuisine. This particular Paik's Noodle is small shop where one orders and given a pager. The menu seemed expanded! There were more options available including chicken wings and jjajangmyeon with meat. We ordered jjajangmyeon with meat, jjajang rice with jjampong soup, and fried dumplings. Jjajang sauce is great with just about anything but something about having it with rice, egg, and soup makes the meal feel complete. My wife devoured the jjajangmyeon and really appreciated the meat as regular jjajangmyeon sauce has onions and cabbage only. However, the sauce is a bit on the sweet side and my wife prefers savory notes better. I haven't been here for a moment and on our way home we decided to grab black noodles, jampong, and sweet and sour pork with the boys. Ordering is simple and quick enough. You can choose to eat inside or there are outside communal patio area so we opted for that since we had our puppy with us. This is a quick bite to eat place for when you have that craving for black noodles and sweet and sour pork. The black noodles are tasty...if you have a craving for it by all means swing by and get it out of your system. The jampong broth has slightly changed. It has a slightly deeper taste than before, which in the past tasted like pepper water without any deep seafood taste. However, it is still slightly lacking in flavor still. Sweet and sour pork is always our boys' favorite and this one is also great if you ever take it for take out. No worries, the hipsters have slowly been migrating to Boyle Heights but the ones who got the memo late are still here. Back before the hipster migration, a new young family would head out to this patch of Los Angeles and make a day out of it. Grocery shopping would be done and if you bought enough they gave you a free box of ramen as "service." Maybe you'd get a lopsided haircut and catch a mass at church if you were so religiously inclined. And always at the end of the day you would have yourself a large bowl of jjangmyeon. That's black bean noodles for those that don't know. And, surprise, surprise readers, it was delicious. But time and people have passed. Things are no longer the same. That delicious, satisfying and soothing taste of black bean noodles at the end of a long Sunday is harder and harder to find. Who knew I would rediscover that taste and feel in a small hole in the wall in Buena Park of all places? But life does not give you a syllabus. They hide these hidden gems, these little pleasant surprises for you to find along the road of life. So for those that are now adults but long for childhood pleasure I would suggest trying out Paik Noodle in humble and not yet hipster infested Buena Park. Let me know what you think. This place gets really crowded but outdoor seating is available. I was disappointed with the jajangmyeon because the sauce was a little burned. After binge-watching on some k-dramas lately, I've been craving on some jajangmyeon and tangsuyuk. So I head down on Buena Park and go to Paik's Noodle and it truly doesn't disappoint! The jajangmyeon is legit here! The noodle is fresh, not sticky and the sauce is so good. It seems so simple but flavorful. And the tangsuyuk.. Oh my! So crunchy! I'm so glad they put the sauce separate and I love to just dip each piece to the sauce so each bite is crispy but you still get the flavors of the sauce at the same time. This is a self-service type of restaurant so you place your order and pay first. There are tables and seats outside too which are wonderful especially when the weather is nice. Best jaejeamyeong noodles in the surrounding area. They give such big portions and even divide the noodles and sauce if you get it to-go. Some restaurants don't give enough sauce to noodles ratio, but Paik's Noodle always gives enough and more. Prices are affordable for most items on the menu. The only entree I feel like is overpriced is their fried shrimp which was over $20 for a dish. But I am assuming it's very fresh and large size shrimps. Never tried before. I got the same 3 items that I get at the Norcal location -- Jajangmyun, Tangsuyuk, and Jamppong. Prices are not bad at all for these huge portions, and they did not skimp on the meat or veggies! I shared with my bf and we had some leftovers for home. Everything was so flavorful and hearty. Already craving it again! PARKING : Shares a parking lot with a lot of other businesses including an Hmart. Parking can be tight especially during peak lunch/dinner hours, so be prepared to make a few circles for parking or park further and walk if you're coming during a busy time. FOOD/DRINKS : Jajangmyun - noodles with a savory black bean sauce, pork, and veggies. This is the second time I've ever had jajangmyeon but there will definitely be a third in the near future because the noodles were incredibly chewy and delicious. The thick black bean sauce held on to every strand and I'm sure I could've demolished this whole bowl myself but we ordered a spread to spare. I also loved the meat jjamppong and they did not skimp out on the toppings. I actually ran out of the noodles before I could get to all the toppings even though it's usually the other way around. The sauce had the perfect amount of spice and I couldn't get enough of it either. I think the spicy shrimp is a new menu item but it seemed more like the chili shrimp because it had a sweet taste rather than a spicy one. I still loved it though and it was fried perfectly since they all had a crunch that was chef's kiss. The only miss for me was the sweet and sour pork, or tangsuyuk, since the sauce was very heavy on the honey flavor. I'm pretty sure it's typically sugar-based but I couldn't eat more than a few bites. It was like you were eating a spoonful of honey especially because the consistency matched too. I've eaten here too many times to count. It's one of the staple to-go and eat-in places for my family, with a toddler in tow. If you're looking for fast service, food consistency and value, this place is it. Food (4/5): Their jjajangmyeon (black bean sauce noodle) is hands down one of my favorites compared to any other restaurant that serves it. It's sweet, savory, meaty, and the noodles have that nice bounce to it. A somewhat recent addition, their meat jjamppong (spicy seafood noodle) is just perfect. The bit of roasted flavor from the extra meat imparts a delicious umami and fragrant flavor that just adds so much to the dish (whereas their regular jjamppong feels like it's missing something). I would highly recommend both the jjangmyeon and jjamppong. If you can handle spicy, add a bit of their chili powder and white vinegar to the former and consider throwing a bit of the jjamppong soup over it (like a few spoonfuls). It's so good together! Service (4/5): The restaurant is self service but they keep the place quite clean and food comes out in about 15 mins. We love to call ahead and they're really awesome about packaging up everything to go. Plan ahead and scan the menu before arriving at the restaurant - I know there is this thing with Koreans they ask are you team jjajangmyeon or team Jjamppong? Which is odd because both noodle dishes vary different in style and flavor. jjajangmyeon -Chines-Style Korean noodle dish topped with a thick sauce made of chunjang, diced pork, and vegetables. Jjamppong - a Chinese-style Korean noodle soup with red, spicy seafood- or pork-based broth flavored with gochugaru. If you can't pronounce the names, then say the number of the dish - pay and they give you a number. I really do enjoy spice and I know I would love them both unfortunately, I have a slight shellfish allergy so I haven't even tried Jjamppong. Although I did come with my partner and encouraged her to try the soup, she decided on Bokkeummyeon instead. The jjajangmyeon was very good and flavorful, yes as most say the portion is enough for 2. I'm getting this off of my chest. My wife says I should let small things go. My shrink says it's good to let it out. First, I like the food at Paik's noodle. I've been to multiple locations and have always enjoyed their food and very fast service. But this experience was different. First, yelp says they open at 10:30. No indication of time on their door (the time dial on the door was pointing at 8:30). We waited for their opening only to have a lady come out and announce to the customers waiting that they don't open until 11:00. No biggie. I can wait. We returned and I ordered #2 (meat jajangmyeon) but asked if I could get chili to make mine spicey. The lady immediately says "no, two different order". Maybe she didn't understand so I asked with hand gesture if they could just put some chili pepper in my meat jajangmyeon. Again she responds with "no, two different order". Sensing my frustration, my wife tried to explain in Korean but she gets cut off immediately with another "no, two different order". I'm frustrated so I asked her to cancel my order. My wife then ordered her jjamppong. I went out to my car to get some kimbap we had purchased at the H mart while my wife took a seat outside. When I returned, the order came back with my wife's #4 (jjangppong) AND #2 (meat jajanmyeon - no chili peppers). I'm now boiling inside at the incompetence of the lady taking my order.
