After reading so many good reviews about this place I was excited to stop in for lunch while I was going to IKEA, but I didn't really feel like it lived up to the hype. I ordered the Pad Thai lunch set, I did really enjoy that this came with a drink so I got an iced Thai black tea or fresh tasted like any brewed iced tea. The Pad Thai itself would have been fine, but they used chili oil in it that was 70% pepper seeds so each bite was just so unpleasant eating. I'm not sure if it was the bottom of the jar or what but I couldn't happily eat most of this because of the textual composition in my mouth and how I couldn't swallow all of these seeds. When I came, it was a weekday and not many people were there, but no one bothered coming by to see how my meal was even with how many people were working. So I ended up just paying. read more

I gave them 4 stars although I had two things that I would have scored them a 3.5. The first is that the majority of the dishes contained pork so if you are not a lover of pork this might not be the place for you. The second was the Pad Thai being served on a chipped dish. Once I take those out of the equation I was ok. Friendly staff, good food, cooked with fresh ingredients, clean bathrooms, fairly priced, and they are located in Red Hook which has a calming vibe compared to the hustle of downtown Brooklyn. They have backyard seating, side walk seating and indoor seating. It was the Forth of July weekend so they were not super busy around 4pm. It sounded like they would be busy after 6pm so reservations are advised. I would recommend them if you are interested more authentic Thai food. The Red Hook outpost of this Michelin guide/Bib Gourmand featured restaurant is even better than the original East Village location. Their low key and spacious backyard is the ideal place to post up on a summer afternoon, with plates of their namesake somtum (papaya salad) and many of their other Isan Thai specialties. Isan food is from the Eastern region of Thailand, and whose dishes are more similar to food from Laos than the food from Bangkok. People may associate Thai food with curries, but Isan Thai food features more spicy salads and grilled meats, all of which we enjoyed during our recent visit. Their menu lists at least five versions of papaya salad, or somtum, and based on our order of the version with salted egg, they were absolutely right to name their restaurant after this dish. The shredded papaya itself had the perfect texture, and was swimming in the most piquant and umami-filled sauce that was a little spicy, salty, sweet, and tangy. I didn't know I could like papaya salad so much until I tried their iteration. I love a good larb and was excited to see they had one made with crispy fish. This salad had amazing texture, and all the aromatics and sauce made for a salad that woke up my taste buds and served as a great palate cleanser for the denser dishes we had on our table like the pad thai, skewers and a rice dish with fried egg, tofu, and chinese broccoli. I'm convinced there are no weak dishes on their menu. The dishes came out really quickly, and the staff gladly obliged when we asked to relocate inside after getting chewed out by mosquitoes. Another outpost of the beloved EV Thai restaurant in Red Hook. Just like its other restaurant in EV, this place also specializes in Isaan Thai food. For those who are fans of this style, you will love Somtum Der. Food highlights for me: -All of their papaya salads are wonderful, but the favorite is the Tum Poo which has the blue crab -The fried chicken pieces (sa pak kai tod der) is very good, although probably a bit on the saltier side -One of my favorite Isaan dishes is the raw shrimp salad (goong chae nam pla). The one here does not disappoint, although I probably like the one at Zabb Putawn better -Larb moo is really good I have to admit I haven't tried many of their noodle dishes, but plan to come back to do so. The space itself is not super large, but they have a spacious backyard, which is perfect when the weather is nice. Came here for brunch on a misty Sunday afternoon and this restaurant seems like a lovely added gem to the neighborhool. My friend and I was craving for Thai and since they had a lovely back patio, we opted to check them out. Of course I've been to the one in the LES so seeing that they expanded to Brooklyn was definitely a treat. The inside of the restaurant was cute but their patio was much better so if I had to suggest, go ask for an outside table if the weather permits. Without a double we ordered their fried chicken thigh appetizer because I adore the one I had at their other location. I also ordered their drunken noodle and shared their grilled crusted roasted rice beef strip with coconut sticky rice skewers. All in all, the food was good but I wouldn't say it was fantastic. The amount of chicken that was given was little in comparison to the price they were charging. I felt I would have gotten more of my money's worth if I went for korean fried chicken at another restaurant instead. As for the grilled crusted roasted rice beef, it was a bit burnt and dry. Of course my main dish, the shrimp drunken noodle lack the charred flavor. Overall, I find their price tag to be a bit higher then the average Thai restaurant that are in the neighborhood. Though I have to say, their music was great. I don't know what they were playing but it did help set a relaxing vibe. Would I suggest going here, sure why not. I've been a fan of Somtum Der in the East Village, but this was my first time ordering from the newer location in Red Hook. The menus are similar, and the flavors of the dishes are as bold and bright as the original location. Portions are a little smaller than some other comparable Thai spots, but the overall quality was good. For two, we got the larb moo (minced pork salad), spicy pad thai mun poo (pad thai with crabmeat), khao pad kaprao moo (stir-fried pork and Thai basil with a fried egg), and grilled sticky rice, "Der's style" (3 skewers of grilled coconut sticky rice), and it was just the right amount of food. I really liked the larb, which was spicy with lots of fresh herbs, and the khao pad kaprao, one of the better versions of that dish that I've had. The pad thai had less flavor than I was expecting, and we didn't find it spicy at all, so I would probably pass on that next time and order something else. But my favorite of all, which was not a surprise considering my love of coconut sticky rice, was the grilled sticky rice. Looking forward to trying more in the future! read more

3.5/5 my review is for delivery and for delivery only. wow, this place is so.. just ok?? kinda confused by why it's so popular. maybe because it's def authentic but i wouldn't ever recommend anyone to travel here just to try the food here. definitely a step up from places that serve crab rangoons but nothing close to a soothr, ugly baby or ayada. we got the pad ki mao with beef, somtum with salted duck egg, tom yum soup and the laarb with ground pork. pad ki mao: they use delicious marinaded ground beef for protein which gave the whole dish so much depth but there weren't much of it. there weren't much vegetables either and the dish was small considering the $19 price point. also, the noodles overall were just SO oily! like just dripping with oil. somtum: i know they are known for their papaya salad and it might be bc people on here hyped the ish out if it but to me, it tasted good, not great. i don't think i would've been able to tell this somtum apart from another if i was blindfolded. laarb: this was the best out of the bunch but again, not mind-blowingly good. tomyum: this was good but not as tangy or sour as most other tom yums - this might be a preference thing though. my experience seems to be different from all the other reviews tho so maybe delivery isn't the way to go but all in all, i likely won't go in person or order from here again. read more

This is a really cute restaurant! I'm happy they've opened up their garden in the back as they have very limited seating in the front. We went for lunch on Labor Day. Place was relatively busy but we had no issues getting a table. The ambiance is quite nice and it was a perfect day to be eating outdoors. Definitely appreciate all the umbrellas for shade! The staff here is attentive and very nice. No complaints though they only offeref chopsticks after we had already started on the appetizers. I hadn't realized their concept is "Thai tapas" so was curious about their limited menu (much smaller than typical Thai places). Their lack of quantity was made up in quality. The chicken worried me a bit until I realized they actually put fresh ginger in the breading. It is very flavorful and crispy! They must know to cater to American palates as the chili sauce wasn't too spicy :) a plus for me since some Thai food can be very spicy! One of my favorite restaurants in Red Hook. This is real authentic Thai food that you wont get mixed up with Chinese food like most Americanized Thai spots. Every time i order from here I have to get the Sai Krok Isan which is Isan sausage. Its a fermented pork and rice sausage that is addictive as can be. they serve it with peanuts,lime,cilantro,ginger and these lethal lil Thai chiles. The Larb salad is very good but be warned its VERY spicy. They wont do it mild btw and I respect that. This is the way its meant to be eaten. Im also a fan of the Pad Se Eiw which is flat noodles with your choice of protein. The Thai fried chicken is their signature and must be tried if you are a fried chicken fan. It is included in one of their lunch specials paired with a great papaya salad and sticky rice. The Thai iced tea is sweet and refreshing. Walked over here on a Saturday evening for some straightforward Thai food. Seating available inside, however there is a nice backyard area where we were able to get a table for two. The selection of items on the menu are not your normal Thai cuisine. Some interesting options included the cartilage soup, fermented pork, and pork liver salad. Decided to keep it simple and ordered the Pork Pad Ki Mao ($15) as well as sharing the Grilled Sticky Rice ($6). The sticky rice is served onto three skewers, packed in an oblong shape that's easily dunk-able in the spicy side sauces. Only a light flavor in the rice; great to sop up anything from your entrée. As for the main course, the Pa Ki Mao comes out as a layering of flat noodles, minced pork, peppers, beans and chili. Noodles are greasy and the beans felt barely seasoned - yet the dish as a whole worked well together. Servers here make the rounds frequently and the ambiance is top notch. Wouldn't get the same thing next time, probably better off to try some of the more creative dishes. read more

Tum Poo - Plara - Papaya salad with fermented fish sauce and field crabs. We ordered a medium and confirmed with the waitress that it was an American medium and not Thai medium. She said yes..... But that definitely felt like a Thai medium!!! If you like spicy, this is for you lol. I loved the sweet green beans in this salad, I think it perfectly compliments a spicy papaya salad. The fish sauce and field crabs are extremely fermented (salty) and you need to be careful while eating this because there are tiny bits of crab shell that you might not see but will definitely feel.... Lolol. I would re-order this but maybe as a mild, my mouth was burning too much to actually enjoy it:( House Special Grilled Marinated Pork - looked GREAT!! But it was wayyyyyy too salty in my opinion. The seasoned crushed rice crust was unnecessary in my opinion. Came on a Friday night and got seated in their backyard, a pretty nice setup. Their menu is full of pictures which makes thinking about what to order easier with the visual support. We started with the sun dried beef, and spicy pork spring rolls. Hard to explain the flavor of the sun dried beef, think of fresh beef jerky maybe.. not as dry. The spicy pork spring rolls were super flavorful, juicy filling, it comes with a sauce on the side that tastes like cole slaw... balances out the spiciness of the spring roll filling. I had the house marinated grilled beef. The beef is super seasoned, very juicy, and SPICY. The fact that it's spicy wasn't mentioned on the menu.. I guess that's the house special part? I really enjoyed this even though it was way too spicy for me. I had to scrape off some of the seasoning to make it less spicy. This dish comes with grilled coconut stick rice, two mini skewers of it. The coconut taste is subtle but you can definitely taste it and smell the aroma of it. I was a big fan of this. My boyfriend got the pad ki mao with beef. Unlike a lot of Thai places, they use minced beef instead of slices of beef, which we both liked because you had beef with every bite of noodle. I cannot believe there are only 21 reviews on Yelp for this place. This is by far one of the best meals I've ever eaten and it feels like a neighborhood secret. I know that the Manhattan location is pretty popular, and was Michelin rated, but don't sleep on Red Hook! First, their backyard area is spacious and full of plants. However - there are mosquitos so either spray some bug spray before you go or use the bug spray they have on their tables. The ambiance was still really nice, and it felt like eating at a friend's house (except the friend is a mindblowingly talented chef) Second, everything that we ordered was so packed with flavor and texture - it's real Thai food, and does not hold back! If you like spicy, ask them to make it actually spicy. It brings out the flavor and makes you sweat in a good way :) Here's what I ordered: Tum Poo Plara - papaya salad with field crabs and fish sauce Excellent, perfectly spicy, and the crabs were fun to eat. Sai krok isan - fried isan sausages The sausages were really great, and different from any sausages that I've had before. I'm not sure what it is about them, but you can tell that they're unique. Pad Ki Mao with tofu (fried tofu and soft tofu inside) Imagine the best pad ki mao you've ever had, then meet this version and forget everything you've ever known. The familiar flavors are brought to life with high quality ingredients and a type of tofu I've never seen before. It was fried tofu on the outside and soft silken tofu on the inside. If I could give it zero stars I would. I realized I never left a review for this place (the Red Hook location), but as the year is winding down, it reminded me of how I spent New Year's Eve last year, dealing with hours of food poisoning (I will spare you the details). Earlier in December I enjoyed my dine-in experience so much so that I decided to order a few dishes for delivery on New Year's eve. Everything tasted fine but clearly something was contaminated or off because a couple of hours later, I started having stomach pains, resulting in several bathroom trips over the course of the next few hours. I was so excited to hear that Somtum Der was opening up a new location in Red Hook! This formerly Michelin rated East Village restaurant specializing in Northeastern Thai cuisine was my go-to spot for entertaining friends, family, and out-of-town guests when we lived in Manhattan. Sadly, our dining experience at their Red Hook outpost was quite disappointing. As much as I'd like to chalk it up to growing pains, you can't escape the fact that their flavors are a lot more subtle and subdued vs. the bold and spicy cuisine served at their East Village counterpart. On the plus side, this location showcases fewer seats and a much quieter, family friendly, and intimate atmosphere. For appetizers, we ordered the Tom Klong Pla Dook Yang (spicy grilled catfish soup) and the Sai Krok Isan (fried Isan sausages). The spicy grilled catfish soup was delicious! The broth was reminiscent of that spicy/sour contrast you would find in a traditional tom yum soup. Also, thumbs up on the fish portion sizing. Re: the Sai Krok Isan - it's one of my favorite dishes and I highly recommend it. For mains, we went with the Khao Pad Poo (Fried Rice with Crab Meat) and Ki Mao with Beef. Talk about bland, subtle, and ordinary flavors! Ugh! These dishes carry so much heat at their East Village location that the menu should come with the disclaimer: "fire extinguisher optional." Nope, not here folks! Finally, we had a major issue with service. Our appetizer and main course were served at the same time. Not only did this present a timing issue, but there simply wasn't enough real estate on the table to fit everything!
