The Red Hook outpost of this Michelin guide/Bib Gourmand featured restaurant is even better than the original East Village location. Their low key and spacious backyard is the ideal place to post up on a summer afternoon, with plates of their namesake somtum (papaya salad) and many of their other Isan Thai specialties. Isan food is from the Eastern region of Thailand, and whose dishes are more similar to food from Laos than the food from Bangkok. People may associate Thai food with curries, but Isan Thai food features more spicy salads and grilled meats, all of which we enjoyed during our recent visit. Their menu lists at least five versions of papaya salad, or somtum, and based on our order of the version with salted egg, they were absolutely right to name their restaurant after this dish. The shredded papaya itself had the perfect texture, and was swimming in the most piquant and umami-filled sauce that was a little spicy, salty, sweet, and tangy. I didn't know I could like papaya salad so much until I tried their iteration. I love a good larb and was excited to see they had one made with crispy fish. This salad had amazing texture, and all the aromatics and sauce made for a salad that woke up my taste buds and served as a great palate cleanser for the denser dishes we had on our table like the pad thai, skewers and a rice dish with fried egg, tofu, and chinese broccoli. I'm convinced there are no weak dishes on their menu. The dishes came out really quickly, and the staff gladly obliged when we asked to relocate inside after getting chewed out by mosquitoes. It's just a reality of New York summers, but my skeeter syndrome could never. I'd go so far as to deem Somtum Der a restaurant worth traveling out of your way for.

Another outpost of the beloved EV Thai restaurant in Red Hook. Just like its other restaurant in EV, this place also specializes in Isaan Thai food. For those who are fans of this style, you will love Somtum Der. Food highlights for me: -All of their papaya salads are wonderful, but the favorite is the Tum Poo which has the blue crab -The fried chicken pieces (sa pak kai tod der) is very good, although probably a bit on the saltier side -One of my favorite Isaan dishes is the raw shrimp salad (goong chae nam pla). The one here does not disappoint, although I probably like the one at Zabb Putawn better -Larb moo is really good I have to admit I haven't tried many of their noodle dishes, but plan to come back to do so. The space itself is not super large, but they have a spacious backyard, which is perfect when the weather is nice. I do miss the days of when they used to BYOB, but now they've gone to serving their own alcohol. This is always on the options list when I'm in the neighborhood!

Food was so tasty! I loved the salted egg yolk papaya salad (wish I ordered jasmine rice to go with it as it is very rich in flavor/on the salty side) The entrees here are very delicious and there's something for everyone. I ended up having to pack some to go because we were overly ambitious and ordered a bit too much. Would definitely want to return in the summer or spring to take advantage of the outdoor space.

Tom Yum Goong (Spicy Lemongrass Shrimp Soup) w mushroom, has shrimp inside very big nd juicy

Came for father's day had a b1g1 free beer for my dad. Server and staffs were very nice and helpful. The soup had mushroom and shrimp it was great. Tangy and sour w a bit natural taste from the greens. Thai tea was great. both w and w/o milk. Papaya salad was refreshing w the vegetarian version. Not as fishy i was a fan. Grilled rice skewer was a hit. The marinated dry pork was a miss. the sauce that came with it was very spicy and tangy tho, good combo dish(meat rice nd sauce) Pad si eiw standard I got mine spicy, my mom had the non spicy. It was flavorful and we were happy. Thinking about it now. Garlic beef was flavorful but notquite for my palate. Pad Ki Mao was good and very basil tasting. Pad Thai was sriracha flavored in my opinion. The dessert waa very good, so good I wish i had another one. Thai Tea panna cotta 10/10!

I've been a fan of Somtum Der in the East Village, but this was my first time ordering from the newer location in Red Hook. The menus are similar, and the flavors of the dishes are as bold and bright as the original location. Portions are a little smaller than some other comparable Thai spots, but the overall quality was good. For two, we got the larb moo (minced pork salad), spicy pad thai mun poo (pad thai with crabmeat), khao pad kaprao moo (stir-fried pork and Thai basil with a fried egg), and grilled sticky rice, "Der's style" (3 skewers of grilled coconut sticky rice), and it was just the right amount of food. I really liked the larb, which was spicy with lots of fresh herbs, and the khao pad kaprao, one of the better versions of that dish that I've had. The pad thai had less flavor than I was expecting, and we didn't find it spicy at all, so I would probably pass on that next time and order something else. But my favorite of all, which was not a surprise considering my love of coconut sticky rice, was the grilled sticky rice. Looking forward to trying more in the future!

This is a really cute restaurant! I'm happy they've opened up their garden in the back as they have very limited seating in the front. We went for lunch on Labor Day. Place was relatively busy but we had no issues getting a table. The ambiance is quite nice and it was a perfect day to be eating outdoors. Definitely appreciate all the umbrellas for shade! The staff here is attentive and very nice. No complaints though they only offeref chopsticks after we had already started on the appetizers. I hadn't realized their concept is "Thai tapas" so was curious about their limited menu (much smaller than typical Thai places). Their lack of quantity was made up in quality. The chicken worried me a bit until I realized they actually put fresh ginger in the breading. It is very flavorful and crispy! They must know to cater to American palates as the chili sauce wasn't too spicy :) a plus for me since some Thai food can be very spicy! I give only 4 stars because although my hubby mentioned his shrimp pad thai was likely the best he's had in the area, I couldn't taste it. My pork pad see ew was very flavorful but tasted a tad burnt. Overall, a very nice restaurant in Brooklyn!

This place deserves more than 5 stars. It is definitely an authentic Thai food and charming ambience in the backyard. We tried House Special Grilled Marinated Pork, Tom Yum Goong, Som Tum Thai and all is excellent. I am a Tom-yum lover and this place has the best tomyum since Thailand. Longan and lemongrass drinks are also tasty. It is a must try!!!!

Spicy Pad Thai with Shrimp

A very unique Thai place. The papaya salad with salty duck egg was my favorite. The spicy fish soup was a great hit too, the spicy and sour/lemongrassy was a perfect match for a warm summer day. Pad thai was good too. The interior is very stylish and our server was very nice too. Overall it was a great experience. I'd definitely come back for the papaya salad.

10/10. Food. Service. Ambience. This is authentic Thai food, not overpriced either. The real deal. We had a reservation for a Friday night but would have been able to be seen. Seems like a lot of people do takeout from here rather than dine in, but we were happy to have eaten here

As soon as we arrived, we were escorted to a table. I've noticed that this restaurant seemed very authentic. They had dishes that I've never seen at other Thai spots. Their chefs are also from Central & Northeastern part of Thailand. So, they are cooking from their respective regions. The presentation of their dishes are all aesthetically pleasing. We decided to share a small plate of HOR MOK This tasted almost like a crab puree into a spoon sized portion. There's 7 pieces in one order. It was recommended to eat it all in one bite. It was great. Texture was very smooth in your mouth. Surprisingly, it had a spicy kick (but nothing too intense). I personally decided to try KHAO PAD MUN NEUR. This is a pricey dish, but very filling! It was said to have 2 pepper spice level to it, but I personally didn't find it very spicy. The rib eye was cooked just the way I like it - medium well (still with some redness in the inner portion). The meat had a perfectly charred/grilled exterior, but very soft to chew. This meat was probably the best part of the dish. Only slight complaint is that the rice was very saucy (almost a bit too much for my preference). But overall, I did enjoy it and was able to finish it, but left super full! Overall, I think it was worth a try. Their service is great. The servers are super great of making sure that your water is always topped up. They explained the recommended way to eat certain dishes. They were able to answer any questions that we had.

Lunch in Brooklyn during in-between meetings of my professional duties of a Wednesday afternoon…read moresummons Thai cuisine. Pad Kee Mao (aka Drunken Noodles), chicken $15.00 Stir-fried flat rice noodle, bamboo shoots, garlic, basil, fresh chili, onion, carrot, string bean, bell pepper, long hot chili The flat rice noodle quantity was sufficient, but minimal and there were too much onion, insufficient string bean, two paucity pieces of carrot. I dislike bamboo shoot which is not a standard ingredient for this particular entrée. I think the bamboo shoot tainted this entrée. I am a traditionalist conservative which bean sprouts is a good substitute variation for bamboo shoot vegetable including string bean. This entrée is my favorite default and as a caveat, if any Thai restaurant or cafe do not offer on their menu I refuse entry to patronize. This entrée enticed my interest and embedded the lunch meal menu for the reasonable price. I personally despise and do not consume spicy hot foods, but occasionally consume mild or very mild in the smallest measurement of the Scoville scale which I specifically requested, but received medium hot spicy. The waitress forewarned me the intense heat level on the Scoville scale as Thai cultural spicy with two or more bird's eye chilies for a high level of spiciness. The spiciness of chili peppers were, in my opinion, medium spicy. Despite the intense medium heat spiciness, the stir-fried noodles lacked flavor with, tender chicken, minimal vegetables, and Thai basil in a bland taste. I wish I chosen shrimp as the protein. Pad Kee Mao sustained my hunger pangs and ate my fill. When eating Thai intense heat spicy foods, I visualize to think of the TV segment "Niall Horan & James Corden Take On Hot Wings" on "The Late Late Show with James Corden" in March, 2020. High heat spicy foods! Thai ice tea, large $3.00 This was a delight and neutralized the heat spiciness because it contains milk. It was served chilled in a large highball glass. Samyan is a Thai cafe located in Clinton Hill, Brooklyn, NYC and accessible via MTA NYC Transit C local train at Clinton-Washington subway station. This cafe is a independently owned and operated, thankfully. The waitress did check-in with me during my meal for attentive customer service. The atmospheric conditions were a simple small dine-in cafe. There were many paintings, portraits hanging on their walls of white subway tiles. Gold metallic metal chopsticks and fork are provided. If utensils are gold then the interior cafe should contain these "gaudy" feature extensive gold elements, including gilded moldings and furniture. Peony rose are very simply and made pretty table centerpiece decorations. Takeout menu and business cards are available for grabs. I did received my sales receipt. At the bottom of the sales receipt there is a suggested gratuity in intervals of 18%, 20% and 22% where customers do not have to perform math calculation. I paid $23.00 in cash as the waitress' informative knowledge of the ingredients and preparation of the heat level on the Scoville scale.

My partner was running late, and even though the place is clearly very popular right now, they still accommodated us with a table. The staff explained every unfamiliar dish we asked about, always with a smile. I usually avoid the standard NYC Thai restaurant lineup of pad thai + generic curry situations and look for places that feel more regional and authentic. The menu here had a bunch of dishes I didn't recognize, which immediately made me excited. They even have a spice guide though the icons don't necessarily mean increasing spice levels. As I understood it, different symbols represent different types of heat. Three chili emojis and three meteor emojis may be equally spicy, but they hit differently. They recommended not to order the pad krapow nuer, and honestly, fair enough. Instead, we got the chicken khao soi, which was far better than versions I've had elsewhere - deeply flavorful, spicy, rich with umami. My partner was crying. I, meanwhile, was at "this is perfect and I'm having a great time." One Huge chunk of chicken cooked exactly right. Mix everything thoroughly before eating. Then came the kua kling which arrived with another warning. That dish became my personal challenge to impress the server, and apparently I succeeded because now they've promised that next time they won't discourage me from ordering the nuer. They kept refilling cabbage and cucumber for us to cool down from the heat. The kua kling itself was incredible. That dry curry heat was everything. It builds slowly, then suddenly punches you in the face - but alongside all that spice is an insane amount of flavor. They also recommended to order a non-spicy side dish to have a balanced meal and spice level, but we skipped it because it would've been too much food. Honestly, this is the kind of place where going with at least four people is ideal so you can try more dishes and balance the spice levels. And if you're unsure what to order, trust the servers - their recommendations were spot on. Also: really great ciders and beers. We were really happy with both choices. Overall, even though it's far from the city for me, I'd absolutely go back.

Newsflash: Ugly Baby is back on its bullshit. Ugly Baby's…read moreconceit, if you can call it that, was that it was really, really spicy. Spicy food, in case you didn't know, connotes authenticity. Call it suffering for beauty, in a culinary wrapper. Ugly Baby took this S&M theater to its logical conclusion in all regards: tuck it in an inaccessible corner of South Brooklyn; use tiny chairs and brusquely inform diners they have an hour start to finish at their table. The more inconvenient it was, the better. I held my applause after my single visit to Ugly Baby, which closed amidst wails and lamentation last year from people who liked rough treatment. But something drew me back to this reincarnation, started by the same people. Maybe, I thought, they'd found a way to bring us that magnetic authenticity, and hold the ball gags and chain flails? The answer is no. I should have known from the name alone: another mysterious two-word phrase (both of whose words again end in -y) that sounds like it could be an overly literal translation of some ineffable Thai concept. I should have known when it opened in the same godforsaken corner of ... what is that? Gowanus? I should have known from the protracted negotiations for a suitable table that followed when my husband, mom and I arrived punctually for our 5:30 reservation and were primly informed we'd be squeezing onto a two top, then were refused an obviously empty three-top ("it's reserved"....oh you mean by a party of three with a reservation like us?), and then grudgingly seated at a four-top, half of which was literally in the kitchen. I should have known after being apprised that "you have one hour at the table." I should have known when there were no appetizers or desserts, and only two vegetarian entrees. This is the same thing as before. We're so back, baby. The mushroom curry, with its single fire emoj, was nowhere near the spiciest thing on the menu, but gosh was it still spicy. How do they make food with such complex flavors that's still hot enough to have emanated from the bowels of hell? It has to be one of the best curries I've had. It's a talent, special even, but it could easily coexist without Hungry Thirsty's other downsides. But I think all those inconveniences and discomforts are the point. They serve to reinforce the specialness of the special parts, counterintuitively increasing your mental investment in internally extolling Hungry Thirsty's virtues. They are to each element what spice is to food: it hurts, and you're proud that it hurts. It all adds up to the second coming of Ugly Baby, and why wouldn't it? Enough people liked being slapped around; maybe they felt like they deserved it. You know if that's you or not.
