I was in the mood for Thai Food before heading to Brooklyn Botanic Garden and wanted to stay on my fave, Franklin Avenue, and chose Sweet Basil. Sweet Basil offers the typical Thai food options such as Pad Thai, Drunken Noodle and Pad Se Ew with choices of protein. The interior is calm, soothing and comfortable with pillows adding a nice touch. I looked at the Lunch Specials served from 11-3. The special includes salad, Spring Roll and choice of entree for @$15. The meal is served in a Bento Box. Here's a quick summary: Delightful: 1. The Entree: I ordered Pad se Ew with chicken; portion is deceiving as it is plentiful. The greens come with Yuzu dressing and the Spring roll is fresh and dipping sauce was good. Overall tasty. 2. The Thai iced tea was refreshing and very tasty. 3. The interior was very comfortable and clean 4. Not every restaurant serves Lunch Specials so it's still nice to patronize places that do Not so Delightful: 1. Climate control: on a 93 degree day just having a "cool" dining establishment is not enough; I expect a frozen zone.. 2. Staff: cold and impersonal, not a great vibe in hospitality, no "Would you like another Thai iced tea?" 3. Noise level: this may be nitpicking but here goes.. I know there are some people who are just plain loud but IMO the staff should monitor noise level. One regular came in loudly screaming " Tracy, hi Tracy!!!!! "Let's sit here no here." Then to the other waitress loudly " Tracy knows how I like my food". Great, but I don't need to know or hear when I'm trying to dine peacefully on a hot day 4. The pain in the a** pay in cash and receive a discount sign: ( SB is offering 4% discount if you pay in cash) not just this place but every place. Seriously, if you are an establishment that thinks it's getting ripped off on offering credit card, then DON'T! I should not have to be penalized by using my debit card to pay. This sign is anti- customer service, I think you should take it down. Be a cash only business! Sorry to say dining at Sweet Basil is anything but sweet. read more

EEEEEk. Should've done better research before ordering Pad Thai from this place. My roommate and I were craving Pad Thai, but what we received was sorely disappointing. The Pad Thai basically tasted like nothing, but had a random kick of spice. It tasted like the noodles had been soaking in water for hours and then given a little bit of powdered spice. It had no traces of the classic peanutty, tangy sauce you associate with Pad Thai. The only way it was tolerable was after we dumped a bunch of our own pasta sauce onto the noodles. The tofu also wasn't tofu.....it was beancurd?? It was such a strange experience. We also ordered some chicken wings with sweet and sour sauce. The wings were good. Tasteless Food! I was hoping their return to Franklin Avenue would have been a success. Whoever used to be the chef at their old location is not there. I ordered chicken panang curry. It was the whitest, unseasoned, rubberish-tasting chicken. The curry was thin as water. What a disappointment! I try my best to support neighborhood businesses. I had a taste for something different that day and for some reason trying Thai just came to mind. My taste buds said sweet yet spicy is what we want so I Yelped best Thai restaurants in Brooklyn and Sweet Basil was definitely on the list. The name caught my attention along with the good reviews of course. So, after viewing the broad menu they had posted I decided to get the mango chicken with Thai sticky rice and a spring roll. Hubby got the Lemongrass Chicken with jasmine rice. The Mango chicken was very good prepared fresh with sweet bell peppers, mango slices and spicy glazed chicken with a hint of fresh basil. Hubby's food was more sweet than spicy and had a lot of fresh basil taste. My first time trying Thai was good and I see myself going here again when in the area. No frills casual Thai dining. Their seating area is rather small but they were busy constantly with delivery so it seems that they do a lot of delivery business. We had Pad See Ew with beef and also tried their version of soy sauce noodles. We loved their pad see ew with beef. Of all the Thai places in the neighborhood, this one was our favorite with pad see ew. The beef was perfect, tender and not too dry. It was the perfect amount of noodles, sauce and Chinese broccoli. The soy sauce noodles had a lot of sauce. They warned us about it but we decided to get it anyway. It is almost like a soup noodle, not as flavorful as the Pad see ew but still very good. We also tried their fried cheese cake as that is not something I usually see on Thai menus. We were not impressed by that but will definitely come back for the pad see ew. read more

Living in the border of prospect and crown heights, there aren't too many Thai options nearby, but this restaurant is one of the better options in the area. I've only ever picked up food, but never dined in. The spot has modern decor and seems comfortable enough to seat ~40 guests. The staff is friendly when I pick up food, and I usually wait 20 mins for them to prepare the food. Each entree, noodle, curry dish comes out to ~$12 each for dinner. I am the least pickiest diner, I'll seriously eat anything. But the flavors of certain dishes tend to be inconsistent, and once, over salted (I assume based on who the chef was that day). The curry is always a hit, with an abundance amount of peppers in it each time. It does fall on the mild and sweet side even though they state it's "medium spicy". Another favorite of mine is the drunken noodles. Not too oily, but lacks vegetables in the dish. Overall, I recommend this spot as being better than others within this neighborhood. And I really like how you can specify your spice level - I like spicy food and so many places err on the side of being less spicy. Also i LOVE that you can order with the DeliverZero boxes that are returnable - and they didn't put those unnecessary plastic utensils in that everyone has a billion of! Not too busy for a weekend. It's a relatively small place, good for small groups. The service is quick, relatively inexpensive, and take credit cards or cash. Here is what we ordered: Lemongrass Pork Chop: thinly sliced grilled pork chops with lemongrass, garlic and lime juice. Served with rice. This didn't cut it for me, turned out a bit bland and could've used more spices to bring out more flavors to the dish. Pad Thai: slightly overcooked noodles, overly sweet and supposedly spicy but wasn't spicy AT ALL Pad See Ew: soft and soggy noodles, kept breaking off when I was picking it with chopsticks. Also tasted bland, can only taste the salt more than any other Thai spices. Really a disappointment. I'm just not a fan of this place so won't be coming back here again. read more

They never offered water and when I asked the waiter brought one glass although there were two of us at the table. Food was good so was the wine and prices were affordable. Just moved the the neighborhood and have been trying out different places to get a feel ofwhat Crown Heights is all about. Went here last night on a date and although the date was a great time, there were a few disappointments with this place. Came here for lunch with coworkers. 6 of us were quickly seated, orders taken & served all within 15 min. Pretty impressed with the attentive staff & efficient service. I had pad thai with veg & tofu (bean curd), my coworkers had mixed vegetables & sweet & sour shrimp. The spring roll that came with bento box was hot and standard. Pad Thai was sweet and over seasoned; I had to cut it with my coworker's rice to even out the saltiness. The bean curd tofu tasted not too good, perhaps old?
