    What Tourists Miss When in NYC Had a long walk through two Brooklyn gems--Cobble Hill and Carroll Gardens--neighborhoods that feel like pockets of the city where time slows just a bit. It also borders Brooklyn Heights, another beautiful historical neighborhood in NYC. The brownstones here are generously spaced with actual front gardens (hence the name), a rare luxury in dense New York. Tree-lined streets, stoops in bloom, and neighbors who still say hello--there's a quiet charm and warmth that makes these areas feel both cosmopolitan and also deeply neighborly. As always, food guided my steps. I ended up at Untable, a Michelin-rated Isaan Thai restaurant, and the reason I made the trip to Brooklyn. Their khao soi isn't traditional--it's bold, a little unorthodox--but I loved it just the same. I admire the chef's confidence to experiment and reinterpret a beloved dish. And to push the experimentation further, I also tried adding the house-made crunchy chili onto my dessert. It's great!     I was excited to try this place as my friend raved about the "what the hell" fried rice - overall, would say it's a decent Thai spot, but I didn't find anything outstanding. We came for lunch on a weekend, and the restaurant was fairly empty. I tried the fried rice, and grilled chicken green curry. The curry was incredibly fragrant, with a strong coconut flavor. The fried rice was indeed spicy, and I liked the addition of mango and eggs. However, the actual flavor and fragrance of the fried rice didn't come through as much as I would have liked to. The decor inside is quite nice, and their cocktail menu looked good.

    Wow the food here was delicious! I don't come to this neighborhood often but am glad I did. Eat of the dishes were flavorful, aside from the crab vermicelli dish, which was a little bland. I really enjoyed the curried chicken thigh - a large serving of protein with a rich sauce. I would come back to try other dishes on the menu, especially the spicy ones!

    Made a reservation for Saturday night about two weeks ahead and had a great meal here. I tried: + I'm walking on sunshine cocktail - perfect + Crab croquette + Untable esan style sea bass - highlight #1 + crab fried rice - highlight #2 + nam prik ong + Kao soi - highlight #3 + Taro custard chiffon cake + Honey truffle ice cream pie Food was overall fantastic. So why not 5 stars? 1) Strict time limit is enforced (I will never not hate that at these prices) and 2) their door is broken/doesn't close behind people unless they go out of their way to push it closed - so I had to close it every 5 minutes because we were seated near the door and it was freezing out. Staff was unconcerned when we mentioned this.

    I only had the vegan curry, but everything else looked amazing! Interesting flavors with lots of fresh and slightly sweet taste of strawberries and lychee. Would've preferred tofu or something else over the vegan duck. Had a nice weekend lunch at @untablebrooklyn and their happy hour drinks look good...might have to go back to try sometime!

    We were on our way to Red Hook when we saw that Untable wasn't packed! We were able to be seated at the bar at around 6pm on a Friday night. Unstable is seafood protein forward with options ranging from soft shell crab, scallops, sea bass and shrimp. They had typical khao soi and crab fried rice. We got the crab croquettes which were our favorite. We split the sea bass over some broccoli, cauliflower and a squash puree. The sea bass was lovely. The Larb Maung was not what I expected. Overall it was a good experience but a little expensive.

    I saw a food vlogger post her food at this restaurant and it looked amazing. We were able to get a reservation two weeks out and planned a date night around this restaurant. The ambiance is both cozy and chic. It's a beautifully done restaurant with a nice size bar area. The staff was quick and efficient but not overly friendly. The menu was much more concise than a typical Thai place. This menu was carefully curated and more sophisticated. We began with the vegan spring rolls which did not disappoint. They were delicious and crispy. My husband ordered the octopus salad which was tasty but too spicy for my liking. He enjoyed it. For mains we ordered the crab fried rice( it was swoon worthy) and the larb, also delicious. I ordered the fig cocktail which was great. I'm giving this place four stars instead of five because I almost feel as if we were rushed. This restaurant is more expensive than a typical Thai place and we literally finished two courses inside of thirty minutes. The pace of service needs to slow down a little. I would definitely eat here again but maybe next time I would eat at the bar so they're not rushing me for my table.

    I think I just found a little gem called UnTable in the heart of Carroll Gardens. The ambience is just soothing and relaxing as the "Sexy Fig" drink I am having. Shout OUT to Min for making a great Sexy Fig drink. Perfection. The crab fried rice with that hint of spice to just kick up the heat was delicious. I came here during the day. Can only imagine what the ambience must feel like at night. Can't wait to rerun back. Thank you.

    I loved the food here! It was all very creative and unconventional. The restaurant is very cozy with only around 20 seats. I tried okra, vegan shrimp skewers, larb tofu, dry green curry (summer special), and khaeng ped. The okra was lightly seasoned, though not slimy at all. The shrimp skewers had a nice crispy outside and slightly chewy inside, and the sweet and tangy sauce on the side was a nice pairing. It wasn't spicy at all, even though the sauce appears to be full of chilies. The larb tofu had some heat, nutty flavor from toasted rice powder, and a light sweet and sour dressing. I liked the freshness from the greens and herbs as well. Both curries had the mock duck, which was chewy and savory, which I loved. The green curry had a small amount of sauce (where "dry" probably comes from) and a standard variety of vegetables. The red curry was probably my favorite dish because of all the fruit incorporated - lychee, grapes, and pineapples infused the broth with a pleasantly sweet tropical fruit flavor.

    Come for the Thai food and stay for the drinks. I was so close to giving a 5 star and wish I could give half stars cuz Untable is truly over a 4.5. Came for a weekend lunch so things weren't super busy. The restaurant is airy and very simple in design. The staff are super friendly and explain things very well. We were greeted with a nice explanation of the menus with suggestions and questions about what we like to eat so they could recommend. We ended up getting the spring rolls, tartare off the seasonal menu, flank steak, sea bass and the spaghetti kee mao ( with the spicy fried rice to go). Things were sufficiently spicy without taking away from the other flavors in the dish. The apps were amazing 10/10. The sea bass was super well made with veges to balance the unexpected but amazing sauce it comes with. The flank steak was shredded in an in a bed of other spicy. This made it a little dry but still very flavorful. And the kee mao was spicy as expected and very flavorful. Very seafood forward if you're there for the protein rather than the carb. The to go spicy rice was also so so good. My one sorta down side is that there are no fried rice dishes that work for a vegetarian or someone with a seafood / crustacean allergy. This was a bit of a bummer as we love a fried rice. Everything else was spot on. I'll definitely be back and depending, might upgrade this review to a 5 star.

    Cute Thai spot with a very unique spin on Thai food and spices. Appetizers: - okra was excellent and well worth it - ceviche was delicious albeit extremely spicy; the pepper could burn you! - the crab croquette were very good Entrees: - delicious spaghetti! loved the protein and taste - risotto was good; nothing mind blowing and the scallops were a bit small and dry Cocktails were fun and the bar was well stocked. Liquid forward and well worth trying. Excellent Thai in the neighborhood that I would go to again. Spaghetti is a must and next time I try the rice.

Pad Kee Mao (aka Drunken Noodles), chicken $15.00 Stir-fried flat rice noodle, bamboo shoots, garlic, basil, fresh chili, onion, carrot, string bean, bell pepper, long hot chili The flat rice noodle quantity was sufficient, but minimal and there were too much onion, insufficient string bean, two paucity pieces of carrot. I dislike bamboo shoot which is not a standard ingredient for this particular entrée. I think the bamboo shoot tainted this entrée. I am a traditionalist conservative which bean sprouts is a good substitute variation for bamboo shoot vegetable including string bean. This entrée is my favorite default and as a caveat, if any Thai restaurant or cafe do not offer on their menu I refuse entry to patronize. This entrée enticed my interest and embedded the lunch meal menu for the reasonable price. I personally despise and do not consume spicy hot foods, but occasionally consume mild or very mild in the smallest measurement of the Scoville scale which I specifically requested, but received medium hot spicy. The waitress forewarned me the intense heat level on the Scoville scale as Thai cultural spicy with two or more bird's eye chilies for a high level of spiciness. The spiciness of chili peppers were, in my opinion, medium spicy. Despite the intense medium heat spiciness, the stir-fried noodles lacked flavor with, tender chicken, minimal vegetables, and Thai basil in a bland taste. I wish I chosen shrimp as the protein. Pad Kee Mao sustained my hunger pangs and ate my fill. When eating Thai intense heat spicy foods, I visualize to think of the TV segment "Niall Horan & James Corden Take On Hot Wings" on "The Late Late Show with James Corden" in March, 2020. High heat spicy foods! Thai ice tea, large $3.00 This was a delight and neutralized the heat spiciness because it contains milk. It was served chilled in a large highball glass. Samyan is a Thai cafe located in Clinton Hill, Brooklyn, NYC and accessible via MTA NYC Transit C local train at Clinton-Washington subway station. This cafe is a independently owned and operated, thankfully. The waitress did check-in with me during my meal for attentive customer service. The atmospheric conditions were a simple small dine-in cafe. There were many paintings, portraits hanging on their walls of white subway tiles. Gold metallic metal chopsticks and fork are provided. If utensils are gold then the interior cafe should contain these "gaudy" feature extensive gold elements, including gilded moldings and furniture. Peony rose are very simply and made pretty table centerpiece decorations. Takeout menu and business cards are available for grabs. I did received my sales receipt. At the bottom of the sales receipt there is a suggested gratuity in intervals of 18%, 20% and 22% where customers do not have to perform math calculation. I paid $23.00 in cash as the waitress' informative knowledge of the ingredients and preparation of the heat level on the Scoville scale.

Ugly Baby took this S&M theater to its logical conclusion in all regards: tuck it in an inaccessible corner of South Brooklyn; use tiny chairs and brusquely inform diners they have an hour start to finish at their table. The more inconvenient it was, the better. I held my applause after my single visit to Ugly Baby, which closed amidst wails and lamentation last year from people who liked rough treatment. But something drew me back to this reincarnation, started by the same people. Maybe, I thought, they'd found a way to bring us that magnetic authenticity, and hold the ball gags and chain flails? The answer is no. I should have known from the name alone: another mysterious two-word phrase (both of whose words again end in -y) that sounds like it could be an overly literal translation of some ineffable Thai concept. I should have known when it opened in the same godforsaken corner of ... what is that? Gowanus? How do they make food with such complex flavors that's still hot enough to have emanated from the bowels of hell? It has to be one of the best curries I've had. It's a talent, special even, but it could easily coexist without Hungry Thirsty's other downsides. But I think all those inconveniences and discomforts are the point. They serve to reinforce the specialness of the special parts, counterintuitively increasing your mental investment in internally extolling Hungry Thirsty's virtues. They are to each element what spice is to food: it hurts, and you're proud that it hurts. It all adds up to the second coming of Ugly Baby, and why wouldn't it? What I like the most is that Chiangmai's expansive menu showcases aspects of Thai cuisine that you're probably not getting at your neighborhood spot. Many items are Northern Thai style dishes. I'd never had Khao Soi before coming here and I was blown away. The chiangmai sausage is also delicious. The roasted duck curry boasts deep flavor while also maintaining the crispiest duck skin. For appetizers, we started with the crispy salmon belly bites and the moo ping. Frying salmon is risky, but the fattiness of the belly keeps it from drying out. The moo ping is nicely grilled and served with a sweet sauce. You just can't go wrong ordering meat on a stick. As an entree, I tried the Gaeng Awm Nur, a soup-like beef dish served with a side of sticky rice. Our server had been really nice and welcoming, so I felt ok asking how I should eat my meal. She advised that I make a ball of some sticky rice with my hand, mash it a bit, and then dip it into the soup. Thai food achievement unlocked! Now I know what to do next time I'm served sticky rice. There's so much on the menu it can be hard to choose. This is encouragement to go with someone else who enjoys food so you can choose things to share! You won't be disappointed and in fact may find that your regular Thai spots could step up their game in comparison.
