This has been our "go-to" restaurant for many years. They have weathered the pandemic very well, coping with all the challenges and maintaining the highest quality in food and service. The owners Nik and Anesti are friendly members of the neighborhood and have done so much to create an open and welcoming setting for everyone who comes in. They have a lively bar and a quiet dining room. As a teacher, I recently brought a group pf students to learn about the restaurant business, and both owners engaged so effectively with my students. My girlfriend and I have enjoyed several meals at Some recently, and the quality is outstanding as it the wine and cocktail list. I recommend it to all bon vivants in Beverly. read more

I've been in Beverly for 7yrs now, yet just visited Soma for the first time just this past Tuesday, and the experience was lovely. My friend and I arrived early and the restaurant was so peaceful and quiet at around 4pm. The candlelit atmosphere was lovely, as well as the music and the place is beautiful. We ordered the Margherita pizza and a beet salad. Both were amazing and perfect, but that beet salad, wow, it was phenomenally delicious. Our waiter was Tristian. What a wonderful guy. Don't let the outside fool you (the windows with the kind of tacky lettering). The inside is modern with a great ambiance; perfect for that date or that group dinner you want to take there. I admittedly didn't expect much when I first moved to Beverly and did judge a book by its cover and never went until I kept hearing how great it was. I've been a few times now and their food is divine. The bread they give you with the special hummus dip is AMAZING! I've had a chicken panini of some sort there multiple times and its the perfect portion and one of the best I've ever had. The bartender service is spotty in terms of attitude. I've had some indifferent bartenders who didn't seem that happy to be there and then have had amazingly attentive and friendly ones as well. It's really a crapshoot. I definitely consider Soma to be among the best places to go out for food and drinks in downtown Beverly and will continue to go there -- especially for that delicious bread. read more

Soma is an interesting, hip restaurant with a large menu offering everything from chef-prepared entrees to sandwiches to pizza. But the menu isn't too large where choosing isn't overwhelming for the customer, and preparing the food isn't too overwhelming for the cook staff. I started to type this review after my first time dining at Soma, and I have already went back only four days later and had about the same experience, so I'm confident in the consistency of quality, too. As great as the starters, sandwiches, salads, and entrees are, the standout here seems to be the pizza. Strange for a place that isn't explicitly a pizza joint, but the pizza is outstanding nonetheless. I believe this is due to high quality ingredients being used, especially the key pizza ingredients: the dough, sauce, and cheese. The toppings just make a great thing even better. The fried calamari with fried cherry peppers comes almost more like a salad with some mixed mesclun greens, chopped cherry tomatoes, and is served over a marinara type red sauce. I never would have expected it to arrive like this, but wow - it's now one of my favorite and quite possibly the very best appetizer I've had anywhere. Period. It's really that delicious of a marriage of flavor and textures. I've had it twice now and I can't wait to go back for more. And even though the calamari was more salad than I had anticipated, I thought it would detract from the actual salad we ordered - a heirloom tomato salad with fresh burrata - it absolutely did not. The soft, rich, and creamy burrata was heavenly over the greens and perfectly ripe and meaty heirloom tomatoes. Torn between the burger, the Cuban sandwich, and the salmon BLT, I went with the salmon BLT simply because I've never seen one on a menu before, and I enjoy new food experiences, especially if they're twists on familiar classics. I wasn't disappointed, and it was just what I expected over a soft and airy brioche bun. Luckily on my second trip I was able to try the Cuban, too, which was also excellent. The semi-sweet pickles warmed by the pressed panini and savory pork and ham was definitely something I'd have again and again. But again, the pizza. I tried a piece of my daughter's plain cheese and a slice of my wife's chicken parm pizza and both were just so good, again, made from high quality ingredients. The crust is both the right amounts chewy and crispy, and the buttery melted mozzarella is stretchy and delicious. I could easily see myself ordering just pizza from there. I've been there twice in less than a week, and I would love to back again soon. I can see Soma being my go to local place. read more

Soma is a beautiful restaurant on the main street of Beverly serving New American cuisine. There is an adjacent bar area and dining area, though the noise from one doesn't reach the other (quite amazing, but much appreciated). Be sure to make reservations, especially on a Saturday evening, as the restaurant fills up quickly. The menu is quite large, with lots of options from salads and pastas, to steak, seafood and even homemade pizzas. And the wine list is extensive, though we opted for two bottles of prosecco during our dinner. Our server was very skilled and friendly, cracking a few jokes and answering questions about the food, while never imposing on our overall dinner experience. I loved the Scallops over pureed peas and served with bacon-wrapped asparagus...so yummy! read more

Food is amazing...we all had sandwiches, Roast Beef, Cuban, and Chicken Wrap and Buffalo Chicken....all amazing and fresh, and sides were great. I came here twice on a business trip because this was our favorite place in Beverly that we came here to celebrate on the last night of our 2 week trip. I had the garlic shrimp pizza. It was tasty but you'd expect big garlic flavor with a pizza that has the word "garlic" in its name. Sadly, it did not. Still quite tasty though. The key lime pie is some of the best I've ever had. You just have to try it. There is caramelized lemon zest in the graham cracker crust. It was little bursts of fireworks in my mouth every time I bit into it! My co-worker got the Soma salad which was really really good. If you're into salads, get the Soma salad. You won't be disappointed. I also had the buffalo chicken pizza. It had chunks of fried chicken on it and real bleu cheese (i actually prefer fake). It was scrumptious. I also love the vibe of Soma. Everything is dark and blacked out. It helped me just to chill and have a relaxing evening. They have a wonderful beer selection. Only downfall was the slow service. If slow service is a pet peeve of yours be prepared. In a way I liked the pace of the service. It gave me time to just sit back. Enjoy my beer. And have good conversation without being rushed by the server who's trying to flip tables as much as possible. read more

The ambiance, food, and service here are top notch. There is a nice transition from the well lit bar to the romantic setting it the dining room. Drinks were unique and interesting, with multiple options and beers ranging as low as $4 for a bud light all the way up to $13 for a Martini. The highlight of the place was most definitely the pizza, but a very close second was the free bread and hummus. I can't think of any other restaurant I've been to that provided complimentary authentic hummus. The hummus wasn't too potent, with a mild just right taste. The fresh bread and pizza crust were quickly devoured as a result. My significant other had an amazing chicken under the brick meal, her thoughts were the pan sauce made that meal. She washed it down with Soma's famous banana bread martini, a unique offering made with brandy, frangelico, toasted walnut syrup, bananas & milk. To her it was everything she dreamt it to be. I myself had a banana bread beer , wow that was good. And lastly, the Italian pizza made with zesty asiago, sopressata, cappicola, & pancetta was a meat extravaganza. Walk into Soma & ask for a table tonight for 2 (me and my 9yr old daughter) told 1hr wait. Leave. See empty tables in the window then 2 couples walk in back to back. So I go into the 1st set of doors. 1st couple is seated and 2nd leaves. I ask oh did they tell u a long wait too? Oh NO 20/30 min! So I go back in and ask why were we told 1hr, why did you seat another party right away, why don't you want us here? Is it because its only 1 adult and they don't want my daughter. Also said that I've been here before with co workers and friends and we've always been seated but when I come alone I can't get seated! Oh their excuse first someone cancelled then oh they moved things around yada yada...... At this point I told her I don't want to eat where I'm not wanted! Funny, whenever I've eaten here with groups or my 2 friends I'm the only black girl but we get seated. Tonight its just me NO table... but the 2 white couple's that walked in are treated much differently. I live near by and I'll NEVER attempt to eat here again and I'll NEVER recommend it!! read more

From the moment we sat down, the bar manager was complaining, bitching, yelling, basically made everyone including customers feel on egg shells that he may snap at any moment. Completely ruined the experience for us. We still tipped well as the other bartender (tall man) was wonderful - we felt horrible for him working with this absolute JERK. 100% because of him we will not be going back to one of my old faves in my home town. read more

My waiter told me he loved the Key Lime Pie Martinj - vanilla vodka, pineapple, lime, fresh cream - so I decided to try it. $12 down the drain for each drink. Tasted like poison. I don't taste any of the flavors that are supposedly in here. I got a second drink, I think it was strawberry, limoncello, and vodka. Sounds delicious, and I often love vodka drinks, but all I tasted was vodka. It tasted like sweetened rubbing alcohol. Really bummed, I had high hopes for this place. Eh. Last night was a beautiful night, so my husband and I sat outside at Soma for some drinks and dinner and it was our first time here. The service was great all night, and so were the drinks. We started with nachos that were pretty good and my husband had a mushroom pasta that he liked a lot. I had the blackened chicken pasta and it was so bland and unenjoyable. If you are charging people $25 for a pasta dish, it should be something really great (or at least good). We decided to take some dessert home due to time restrictions, and they ended up giving us the wrong dessert. Ron Jeremy released a new rum. He stopped by Soma for a release party. I thought to myself, what sort of place is it if Ron Jeremy is having a special event there? Not somewhere I was particularly interested in trying out. Until my bf brought me there for dinner one night. Very posh interior...not what I was expecting at all. Parking is kind of a bitch in downtown Beverly, but after the meal I experienced, it was worth the walk back to the parking lot a few blocks away. I ordered "chicken under a brick" because the brussels sprouts were calling my name. It was one of the most delicious meals I've had in a long time. The chicken was so moist and perfectly seasoned. The brussels sprouts were amazing (although there weren't enough of them in the dish!), and the fingerling potatoes...YUM-MY! Typically a slow eater, I was surprised at how quickly I finished my plate. And I wanted more. I'm looking forward to going back and maybe trying something different. Or sticking to the chicken under a brick because I find myself dreaming of having those delicious brussels sprouts again. I wonder if they would just let me order a side of them... read more

On my second visit I had a "grilled cajun catfish wrap" for lunch which was very good. The place looks nice, albeit very dark. Service was very friendly, but not very attentive. We were up visiting our kid at school so we asked for a recommendation. We just went for burgers, and only had soft drinks so maybe we're not the best party to be writing a review. But my mom told me that you can tell a lot about a restaurant by the bread they serve, so I felt compelled to write. I'm not much of a bread eater, rather I guess I'm a bread snob. I don't know if it was a good night, but it was spectacular bread. Question for John Pinnette, "have you tried the bread?" The outside was crusty. Really crusty, and flavorful. The inside was both soft and chewy like no bread I had ever eaten. I have to say, if gluten is the magic ingredient in good bread, this was double gluten bread. Moving on, enough about the bread already. (but it was very good) I ordered the Burger with Mushrooms and Gruyere Cheese and rather than fries, I took the side salad. The burger was the size of a softball slightly flattened. I typically order my beef rare, but burgers I order medium, and this was perfectly cooked. It was still juicy but appropriately cooked. The mushrooms, several different varieties were sauted beautifully and the cheese was a great accent. Again, this is only a burger, but it was an exceptional burger. Now the side salad was mixed greens. Nothing else. So no big deal, right? No, the salad was excellent. It was fresh, and expertly dressed. Just enough vinegarette but not too much. No puddle at the bottom of the bowl. In this case, however, I wouldn't have minded a little extra salad dressing, because there was another piece of bread left in the basket, and you can take that bread and sop up that extra dressing and.... I wish I can tell you about the other meals at my table, but I was too locked in to mine. Another sign of a great, albeit simple meal, perfectly executed. read more

I work in the food service industry so I completely understand that things can go wrong or there might be a lot on someone's place but this was just depressing like... they didn't even try? We waited a good 50 minutes for the food (a small pizza, one crab cake, and fish tacos) and the server checked up on us like once. Not even once honestly, she kinda swang by, asked us how we were doing, and left before we could answer. Anyway, as to the food, it was edible. Again, I don't really have the highest standards, but this just wasn't worth the price. The hummus and fish tacos were bland, the crab cake was mostly breading, and the pizza was just greasy. After a crazy day of many calls to Soma about our reservation, they were extremely understanding and accommodating of all our requests! Hats off to front of house! Shout out to our server Anna who did a wonderful job of tending to our needs, keeping our waters full and giving us good advice on our orders! Best server ever! She even hooked us up with the most delicious dessert. A great server makes a world of difference and I can't stress the amazing difference she made in what could have been a crazy family dinner. The food was average, drinks were good. Our server Matt was wonderful and so nice but unfortunately the management there made the experience less than ideal. They were rude and aggressive. There was a miscommunication about closing times due to covid and they were really unprofessional to the point of raising their voices and making me feel uncomfortable. My husband and I went here for the first time last night - we thought it was great! Really nice place for a date night or somewhere to meet up with friends. The place was hopping on a Friday night! We both really enjoyed/appreciated the fresh bread with hummus that was served and the beer list was impressive. We thought the food was reasonably priced and quite delicious! I got the chicken parm sandwich (which was HUGE!) with mashed potatoes and a seared vegetable medley. All was delish. One of the good spots in Beverly if you wanna have great drinks and good food. Have been here a few times and is usually good. However, went last night with my girlfriend and the service was extremely slow. It took at least 15 minutes for the server to take our order of drinks. The poor lady looked like was running a marathon to be able to attend all the tables. Lastly, when my friend and I went to the bathroom they cleaned the table and took our box with the leftover pizza. We've visited the bar & dining room several times at Soma. The bartender Kevin (shaved head) is unpleasant - as confirmed by other reviews. He seems disgruntled, who begrudgingly makes drinks and gets angered when you ask for anything specific. We expected the aforementioned behavior, but this newest experience was truly baffling. We were asked to move away from 'VIPs' at the bar & sit further down. The empty seats we had been in next to the 'VIPs' reserved seats, remained empty while we were there. The perpetuation of classism and assumptions made regarding patrons seems to be an issue (another recurring theme in Soma's reviews - people mistreated based on attire, etc.). Dave (another bartender) is nice. We've had other good servers/service (when we were dressed up). Food is ok and atmosphere is decent (aside from the cantankerous bartender, who's most definitely in the wrong profession) but we'll never go back. read more

A little more than a four if you ask. The burrata was very good. Perfectly creamy and not watery. Maybe a tad too much lettuce but just leave it over lol. The gazpacho and vegetable soup were also very good. Swordfish, steak and the chicken under a brick were well done and the sides were nicely cooked. The sides were. Nice too. The real shortfall was the tuna tartare appetizer. It was a good size portion for an app or a dinner, but it was simply chopped unseasoned raw tuna with a little lemon aioli on the bottom. I asked for more aioli and got it, and that made it perfect. And the home made chips were fresh and perfect. Despite the dry tuna still very worthy of "the list"! read more
