Celebrated a 90th birthday party during off-hours on a Saturday. The folks were awesome to deal with, gave us free rein on the restaurant, served pizza as appetizers and the hot and cold buffet. The brothers are super friendly and were very honest about what I needed for the number of attendees. Delivery was right on time and food was kept extremely hot in a food warmer, so we didn't need burners. The baked ziti was my favorite, but everything was tasty. every time i drive by this place (i live 3 blocks away), the parking lot is disgustingly full during lunch hours. I knew I had to give it a shot one time. So today, i made up my mind to go. Amazing people, friendly convos...will come back just because it's a fun atmosphere. Finally I have found a place in Beverly that has a REAL Italian sub! As with all subs the absolute key is the bread and The Salerno uses real crusty Italian bread, quality meats and cheeses, and the atmosphere when I popped in for the first time was pleasant. Best place for Pizza in Beverly/Salem. The uniqueness, personal authenticity of the owners, and great food is what makes Salerno's a fantastic choice. As noted from the other reviews, this place is owned by two brothers. They will be very real with you, not pandering to typical customer sensitivities. You treat them with respect and they will take care of you. They know me by name when I go in and they have been extremely amenable to custom orders. Go in for a sandwich and you will get a generous portion. Order some pasta and it feels home cooked. As other reviewers have noted, their hours are a bit difficult to navigate. It is a pain when I'm hungry for a pizza on Wed night and they close at 3:30. But they have families that they spend time with and that's to be respected. So I just deal with it. Give Cafe Salerno a chance if you've never tried it. They will take care of you! read more

Had Cafe Salerno cater my Christmas party last night. Food was outstanding and the service was excellent. We did a deli platter, baked ziti, meatballs, antipasto and potato salad. Each dish was mouth-wateringly delicious and portions were quite generous. All of my 16 guests went back for seconds and even thirds! Bravo guys! I've found my new favorite catering spot. We love this place. The food is great, from the terrific pizza to the sandwiches which are almost big enough to bat .300 with. The owners and staff are friendly. This is the epitome of the little neighborhood restaurant that serves up good food in generous amounts and where they recognize you and say hi when you walk in. We see many of the same people over and over when we eat here - they've built a loyal client base that keeps coming back. An example of the type of customer service you get...our 5-year-old daughter left her beloved stuffed bear in one of the booths after lunch one day. We didn't discover this until later in the evening. We called to ask if they had found it, and not only did they have it, one of the owners actually drove it to our house to return it to her. We live down the street and so it wasn't a long trip for him, but who goes the extra mile like that in this day and age? read more

The pizza is mediocre at best, service seemed good but I called in the order to pick up , I was told it would be ready in 20 minutes which seemed fine but when I arrived 25 minutes later it wasn't ready and I waited another 10. I realize that's not a lot of time however I couldn't help noticing that the restaurant/bar area was not very clean, and a strange odor hung in the air. Worth noting it wasn't very busy and non of the staff seemed too concerned with cleaning. Wonderful restaurant! Good prices for a generous amount of food (8-14 $ respectively, depending on meat). The owners are brothers and their food is incredible. The service is wonderful-- great for both couples, families, and elderly folk. The times are so-so but considering they all have family and when they are open, they're always busy, it's understandable. I have been working in the Beverly area for about 15 years and have been a happy customer at Salerno's for that whole time. This restaurant is the best in its category. While I am mostly a lunch customer, I have also had dinners which were also great and at very reasonable prices. However, its the lunch experience that I most enjoy. Great food, lots of it and very reasonable prices. The atmosphere is far from fancy but very friendly, relaxed and lots of good local folks. Big variety of classic Italian comfort food. Daily specials are always good choices and their soups are a meal in themselves. I would say that the soups are a real high light. Fresh cooked everyday - lots of variety and always really good. Only problem is to eat both a soup and another choice can be detrimental to your waistline, but it is hard to turn down having both so taking some home is always an option. If you are expecting the experience to be like some of the high end restaurants like Il Capriccio or Mamma Maria, you may be disappointed but cost five times as much. If you are looking for very satisfying food in an informal setting, Salerno's will get you done. My favorites are their lasagna, the Italian Wedding soup, and the excellent Italian cold cut sandwich, either US or Imported, but many, many other options. read more

The food is AWFUL! We ordered three dishes here and everything was horrible. The Chicken parmigiana was soggy and sour. The Shrimp with Brocolli and Ziti in a supposed white wine sauce was totally bland and the sauce was so watery it was practically a soup. Only the Beef in tomato sauce (forgot what it was called exactly) was somewhat edible thanks to the tomato sauce. The portions are huge and made up mostly of plain pasta with nothing on it. There is no reason to charge $13-14 for food like that. Both I and my dining companions really love Italian food and this was a sad excuse for really delicious dishes when they are done right. Granted we didn't order the pizza, which is supposed to be good here, and our waiter was very nice, but if you want some regular Italian food go anywhere but here. read more

PSYCHO ALERT! I am warning all Yelpers about this place- a place that I have never even been to and will never go to. Listen to what happened to me. I had heard good things about the food and wanted to place a catering order. I called yesterday (Sunday) and the number rang and rang. I then realized through the website that they are closed on Sundays. Ok, so I'll call back on Monday. Monday morning Im sitting at my desk at work and my cell phone starts to ring. I see by the caller id that its Cafe Salerno. Great, I think, now I dont have to call them, they must have seen my missed call yesterday and are calling to see what they can help me with. Oh, how wrong I was. I say hello and a crazy man starts spewing "I dont know what you're selling but if I ever find out who you f%&*ing are then Im coming down there. You can me and aks for Todd and slam the f$%^ing phone down!!???" I should probably mention at this point that I am a woman. I finally manage to get a word in and all I can think to say is "Is this cafe Salerno?" and the man goes on and on how my phone number was just on his caller ID 30 seconds ago (impossible) and how I called and asked for Todd and slammed the phone down (who is Todd??) I explained to him that yes, I did call, but it was yesterday and no one answered and I realized they werent open and I was going to call back today and place a catering order but hadnt gotten around to it yet (it was only 10am). The man started to calm down and said "sorry, this happens all the time" and I try to explain that even if that did happen, its not really beneficial for a company to call back someone and go postal. I then tell him that I was going to come down and show him my cell phone and the last call to the palce was yesterday at 3:36pm. He starts to get agitated again and insists that my number was the last one who called. I again explained to him that I called the prevous day and NO ONE ANSWERED. I finally told him that I was goign to place a catering order (and it was going to be over $100 although I didnt tell him that) but that now I was all set. He then says "fine, you're doing me a favor" and slams down the phone!!!! What a psycho! I dont know who this guy is because as I said I have never been there but I will never go there and will let all my local friends to stay away! OK, these guys are not your typical restaraunt owners. They are 2 brothers who have been in the business for some time. They treat their place like a typical Italian person would when they walk into your home. They just want you to relax and eat ! They know most people's orders as they are walking in, if you are a regular. They know that you don't like olives in your salad, but you love a little mozzarella. This place is the CHEERS of restaraunts. They know names, orders, allergies, etc., if you are a regular. If that isn't a home atmosphere, than I do not know what is. I have had the chance to eat here on several occasions for lunch and then at dinner. There hours are a bit strange, but that is because it is a 2 person operation. Mon - Wed, they close at 3:00, Thurs open until 7:00 and Sat until 8:00. That is alot of hours, plus inbetween those hours, they are either preparing for a big catering job, which are the best prices I have EVER seen, or they are preparing food for the homeless once a month, or they are preping for the next day, or trying to make their kids baseball or swim teams. One was the head of Beverly PTA for a time. Look, if the police are there at 11:00 am during the week and the mayor is in around 12:30 in the afternoon, how can this place not be great !! THEY DO TAKE CREDIT CARDS !!! This is solid food at a good price. It is a good joke or story during the afternoon and a nice intimate deal at night. They can accomodate most groups too, just call for some reservations. They do not really deliver and too bad too, because that pizza is THE BEST in Beverly. They will use the taxi delivery service, but go down, order a pizza and while it is cooking have one of the coldest beers I have ever had. I have NEVER Seen that place dirty enough to have rodents are bugs, like mentioned in an earlier review. I have never seen anything like that in the time I have been there, and I was there once when the health inspector came in during the lunch rush.
