My first time trying captains was tonight. Sadly not the best first impression. They advertise they close at 9pm. My husband called at 8:15pm with a pick-up order. The first thing the woman said was " we close soon , can you be here in 10mins?" With a ton of attitude and clearly aggravated we placed an order. We ordered two roast beef's , chicken tender & 2 pizza rolls. That takes all of 10 mins max. We didn't realize it was such an inconvenience. The roast beef were awful! The meat was grey, sloppy. I have been coming here since I was in single digits. I am 38 now. While I don't normally write reviews. I have never read so many wrong and hurtful comments about a place that made me feel at home as an immigrant. A place where people were kind to me and smiled every single time I picked up my order no matter if I was 9, 16, 25, or 38. This is a family owned business of hard-working people. I find the comment about the restroom quite perplexing and honestly incredible. If it wasn't a health violation, they would have let you use the bathroom. There is also a police station, public library as well as a fire station less than a mile away if you truly needed to use a bathroom (or your home). If you think the portions are not up to your standard or overpriced, I suggest you make it yourself and calculate the costs it took you to make from the supermarket. This is one of the best places in Swampscott and is an institution. They have had the same amazing quality of service and food since I have lived in Swampscott. 1993. Popped in impromptu and ordered in person. The subs were done in under 15 mins and piping hot. The restaurant was empty but lots of people were running in and out picking up orders. I ordered a steak tip bomb with hots ($14.99)and it was awesome. Oozing with cheese and the steak wasnt chewy at all. My buddy ordered a steak tip and cheese. His sub looked lame in comparison haha. I ordered a Chicken Kabob Salad tonight. $17 and change for about 4OZ of chicken with 90 % Iceberg lettuce, a light sprinkle of fetta, about 6 tiny slices of onion, about 6 tiny pieces of cucumber and a quarter of a half white tomato. No peppers or olives or anything else. The kicker was they dropped the small flimsy half a pita loose on top of the salad container that was pushed around the dirty counters. Luckily we were in the area hungry as this will become a regular for us going forth once we move! Service - owner is very nice and will answer any of your questions. The lady that took out order was nice as well. Food - we only had the curly fries and 2 lamb gyros and they were GREAT. The perfect amount of everything. The rations were spot on with lettuce, sauce, lamb and the pita was warm and fresh. Location - there is plenty of street parking and across the street from the Swampscott commuter rail station. Best chicken kabob subs and salads in the whole state. Been going to captains for 20 years and will never stop.The employees are great too. I drive by every morning around 6am on my way to work to see their lights already on and someone in there getting ready for the day, makes you realize how committed they are to their business and customers. Went in the other night to pick up a couple of pizzas (decided to try this place for the first time) and the man working there (presumably the owner?) was rude, curt, and condescending. Could barely get his attention, was too busy staring out the window at people walking by (what?!) and was just entirely distracted by anything but his customers. We ordered pickup for a pizza and junior beef. It was quick, ready in about 15 minutes. The beef was pretty tasty and a decent portion for a junior. The pizza had generous toppings and had a lot of flavor. This food is fabulous and the service is fast, friendly, and accurate. So far I have enjoyed their gyro which was juicy, and flavorful. The sauce was flavored just right. The lettuce, tomatoes and onions were fresh. Their Italian sub has the best bread for a sub. It really let the meat and vegetable fillings shine instead of just getting an overpowering mouthful of bread. Their Super Beef (on the onion roll) was so large I could not finish it. The beef was rare, the bun was fresh and the sauce was spicy with flavor without burning the mouth. This place is the BEST! I've been coming here for more than a decade and the menu has stayed consistent. All the ingredients are fresh and the food is reasonably priced (with decent portions!). Awesome location and friendly staff. When I move out of town, I'll make it a point to drive back just to pick up pizza/subs/calzones from here. I took one bite because everyone knows the rules and after finishing my second slice I have to say this pizza reminded me a lot of Borelli's on Long Island. It did come out piping hot but lacked a good flop which I always consider a telltale sign of a good slice. Therefore I can only give this pizza a 2.5. If you just want a cheese pizza, get it somewhere else. It's not that good and kind of expensive. However, add a few toppings and the pizza here is pretty good. Their calzones are usually very good, too - my favorite's the chicken kabob. Still, though, their meals are generally better than their pizza IMO. They make my favorite chicken kabobs in the area - juicy, marinated and delicious. Get it in a salad, sub or a full meal (which comes with a large salad and enough fries to feed an entire family). I go to Captain's whenever I need a good take out meal that's quick. They're brand new buffalo chicken wrap is my favorite thing there. The buffalo isn't too spicy, but it still gives you that buffalo taste. They're chicken kabob calzones are to die for as well. They do deliver to Swampscott, but sometimes not to Marblehead or Salem due to the fact they might be busy (this usually occurs on friday/saturday nights). The only thing I do not like about Captain's is the atmosphere in the actual joint. The people there are kinda ghetto, but they are nice to be fair. The floor is a little yucky and seems like it hasn't been cleaned in ages. Also, there are really no tables inside so it's basically just take-out/delivery. This review addresses Captain Pizza's pizza, as that's what I ordered and most other reviews are of their kabob sandwiches and calzones. I am of two minds with regards to their pizza. On the plus side, the toppings including the cheese were fresh, plentiful, and tasty. Other places give you a few measly shreds of broccoli and call that a topping, Captain loads it up. Their crust on the other hand is kind of dry crumbly and did not have alot of flavor. Sort of cracker-like. I like my pizza crust nice and dense and chewy. So, I can't go more than three stars. But that is still not bad, and the large pizza is darn large. read more

The toppings and sauce are good but the type of "dough" they use for their pizza honestly has the consistency of cardboard, but that aside.. I ordered an Italian on the phone for pick up, for the lunch special, large sub + a can of soda for $6.25 (before 2PM) I showed up at 2:03 - no bullshit. They proceeded to charge me the full price - I told him I ordered before 2 and said he it didn't matter.
