Their Italian heritage really shows in the food they cook daily. I mostly attend during lunch hour and very much enjoy their luncheon specials. Reasonably priced, I highly recommend Cafe Salerno. Salerno has the best pizza on the North Shore hands down. Think North End style pizza without the burnt edges. The classic Italian dishes are simply prepared and the value is second to none. If you stop in for lunch you will love the subs. The Boars Head cold cuts are sliced fresh for every sandwich. Parking is a challenge but it is worth the trouble. read more

Very disappointing. We've been meaning to get take-out from here for awhile now and realized we were able to put in an order before they closed tonight. We've had catering before and it was good, but I think that's because it was reheated for the party. This evening we had two pasta dishes, an appetizer and a pizza. All of the food was cold and my husband had to wait when he got there. It's a five minute drive home. The pasta was clearly over cooked yet some pieces were hard and stuck together. The Alfredo sauce was bland and didn't improve when reheated. My son was gagging after trying to eat ravioli that were still raw on the inside. It seems like the food was sitting under a heat lamp prior to being boxed up and the food didn't seem cooked to order but rather pieces that were put together for each order. My daughter said the pizza was good but again cold and my husband said he ravioli, while cooked, was also cold. I know with takeout food is not going to be as warm as when you eat in, but restaurants are adapting in the age of takeout and for a restaurant that does a lot of catering they should be better. read more

We walked into Café Salerno on Thursday because I was craving a veal parm sub. The hours never worked for us, yet we had been there twice over the years and it was great. We arrived at 200p and the place closed at 230p. I asked if this was ok and they said fine. The owner Mike said no problem and got us a cocktail and a menu. Veal parm was not on the menu for lunch only for dinner. I asked Mike if he could make me one , and he responded that he used the veal for dinner because it was quite expensive. After much persuading Mike who did not want to charge me 14.00 for a sub agreed. Best veal parm and conversation plus a great drink. The brothers that own the place Mike and Todd are charming. I recently had the pleasure of dining at Cafe Salerno. It is a family owned and operated Italian Cafe. It is nice to see that a neighborhood family restaurant can thrive in a world of corporate restaurants. The service was friendly and fun and the chicken marsala was delicious! The atmosphere was cozy and clean, with a wood burning stove running on a chilly night. I will highly recommend this place to my friends and family. My Fiance has wanted to go to the place forever but I always said "no, it looks like a dump". Well we finally went and guess what? It's a dump. The atmosphere is that of a bar, plain and simple. It is really nothing more than that. There is a blanket/sheet hanging in front of the door when you walk in blocking the cold I gather. Really? How tacky is that? That should have made us leave but I knew my fiance really wanted to try the place. We had to sit at the bar for the first 15 minutes so we figured we'd order an appetizer. Finally a small table opened so we moved. The appetizer came and it was mediocre at best. We decided to order since it was now a bit late to go anywhere else. The "homemade" bread sucked, sorry buddy. It wasn't good and if you are going to boast about it, redo your recipe. My Fiance had the veal cutlet and at one point said that he had to spit out a piece because he was unable to chew it. He's a guy and never complains about food! I have had better food at chain restaurants. I barely ate my food. The sauce had an odd undertone of clams? If you want to drink, go here and party on. The bar owner was very friendly and tried to be funny, just like a neighborhood bar. If you want GOOD FOOD, don't go here. Please, don't go here. I had heartburn within a mile of leaving this place. Ordered take out on a Friday night. My husband had fettuccine Alfredo with broccoli- it was extremely bland. I had eggplant parm, the red sauce was okay but the eggplant was very chewy and there was no cheese on it. What?! That's the best part. Both of our pastas were over cooked. My husband and I had driven by several times but the parking lot was always full so we kept going. We figured it must be good food if it's always so crowded and good it is! We split an antipasto salad which is a meal in itself and then I had a Chicken Parm sub. I am still thinking about the incredible Chicken Parm almost a month later....it was that good! Tender chicken breast, tasty well seasoned marinara and provolone cheese on a toasted roll. I could only finish half but I enjoyed the remainder later at home. The prices are ridiculously low in relation to the quality offered. Others have made reference to less than polished service. This is a small family run Italian restaurant, It can be loud. There may be some bickering and there is a lot of teasing among the staff and customers - all in good fun. I found it charming. These people work hard and put out authentic unpretentious food. They may be rough around the edges but they most certainly have heart. I look forward to a return visit so I can try the pasta and homemade soups. It's important to support small local businesses like this. Keep in mind they do close between 3 pm and 5 pm everyday. Picked up lunch from here for the first time today. Ordered 2 subs, one Italian with "everything" and one Eggplant Parm. The Eggplant Parm sub wasn't too bad, eggplant and sauce was pretty good but the sub roll bread seemed cheap and didn't taste good. The Italain sub was dry, missing hot peppers and had about 4 small shreds of lettuce on it. If you are going to sell Italian subs in the Northeast area you need to do it right, too many Italians around here to get away with it. Italain subs with everything should be smothered with oil, onions, tomatos, lettuce, pickles and hot peppers. Prices were very fair but c'mon this isn't rocket science! read more

Just have to say....they are very accommodating and they care! We had a graduation party with 30 people. We had a full tray of broccoli, chicken and ziti amd a 1/2 tray each of meatballs and sausage/peppers/onions. We picked it up at the specified time we needed it and it was hot! Everyone ate it all! No leftovers! At least 8 people asked where we got the food! I must say I hope they keep doing what ever it is they do! Don't change or skimp on anything! Delicious food! I'm amazed. I didnt know pizza could be this delicous. I'm fairly new to this yelp thing but i just had to review Wild horse cafe, Beverly Jade and here. This are my main three when i am out and about. Cafe salerno is one of those places to grab a quick bite once in a while but they lost a star for haveing a very weird open close time. It's like they open when they feel like and close when they feel like it. Weird but if you want a heart warming bite of delicous pizza come here! Just make sure there open. read more

Cafe Salerno has a great atmosphere. The owners Micheal and Todd are not only the chefs but they are your waiters too. They are both very friendly and will take the time too sit down and talk with you. The food is excellent one of the only places in the are that serves Real Italian. All the dishes are made fresh when you order it and they are very happy to accommodate your dietary needs. Bring you appetite they give you a lot of food for a very reasonable price. Parking are out front is small so you might have to park on a side street but it is well worth the walk. They don't take credit cards but they do take cash and check and an IOU they follow the rules of the hose which are posted on the entrance to the dining area. Whenever i am home on leave from the navy i make it a Point to go there the First and Last night i am home to me the only thing better than Cafe Salerno is Grandma's house on Sundays. read more

Horrible experience! Supposed to be a "family" pizza joint...went in today with a friend and our 6 kids (school vaca week) and got ignored from the moment we walked in to the half empty place. We had to flag the owner/waiter (Todd) down to give our order...he pointed to the soda fountain and told my friend and I to get our own drinks (really??). Other tables got bread to munch on (6 hungry kids would have loved that) and we got nothing but told to leave bc our kids were apparently not welcome. Seriously, the owner/cook (Michael) came to our table (I thought to apologize for the horrible service!) and told us we were "killing him" being there with our kids and that he would "pay for your food if you leave", then told us to "go to papa gino". Our kids were NOT running around or out of control. They were hungry kids who wanted pizza. Adults get annoyed when they are being ignored and treated crappy when out to dine (to spend money!!) .... our kids had every right to feel impatient, as we were ignored until we were told to leave. I am not even sure this is legal...telling 2 moms with children to leave (essentially refusing service) because our kids (all seated and waiting for pizza...NOT running around or screaming) bothered the owners and other customers? Funny, because we were treated terribly before we sat (and had the chance to actually annoy any other customer) - no greeting, no menu and no real service to speak of. The food is just ok (barely) and the service has always been poor, but we dealt with it bc it is around the corner from us and convenient. No more! Horrible, terrible, unacceptable!!! read more
