Tried Sala Restobar in Beverly and overall it was a pretty underwhelming experience. We started with drinks -- I ordered a piña colada expecting it to be blended, but it came unblended. Nothing on the menu or from the server mentioned that, which was disappointing right away. When I told the server I didn't like it and wanted something else, he literally tilted his head and said, "ummm what do I tell the bartender?" That honestly rubbed me the wrong way -- just felt unprofessional and awkward. Jenny got a tequila cosmo, which was fine, nothing special. Food-wise, everything was just average. The bao buns were overcooked and the bun fell apart, though the flavor was decent. The pineapple fried rice was probably the best thing we had, but even that was just okay. We also had dumplings -- Jenny liked them, but I thought they were just alright. Dessert was the biggest miss. The blueberry cobbler was not good at all -- maybe a 3/10 at best. One thing that really didn't sit right was when we asked to split the tasting menu and were told no. That doesn't make much sense -- if people want to share, especially for a tasting menu, it should be allowed. Overall, nothing stood out in a good way, and between the service and the food, solid ambiance , it just wasn't a great experience. read more

We both had the Taste of Sala four-course meal for $46. There was a pretty long wait between courses at times, but the atmosphere is relaxed enough that it didn't feel out of place. Portions were larger than expected, and each dish was very shareable, so you can easily try eight things instead of four if you plan it right. They also have live jazz music -- every Thursday from 7-10pm, and on Friday and select Saturday nights from 8-11pm. If you want a clear view of the musicians, try to sit on the right side (opposite the entrance), though the middle works too. It's a fairly small space, so most tables can see, and all tables can hear. Overall, it's a fun spot -- good food, a relaxed vibe, and the live music (when available) adds a nice touch. If you're looking for something new to try when in the Beverly / Salem area, or a good date-night venue, I'd check out Sala. read more

The restaurant is modern and cozy with open seating at the bar and reservations are highly recommended. There is love music on Saturdays and the Chef/Owner Alex is really friendly and checks in on guests. He has had experience working at Michelin restaurants oversees. The Korean street tacos is super flavorful with juicy short rib with a nice salsa verde. The pork belly bao bun has a great lime sauce and the pork has a crispy skin. Only regrets with these small dishes was not getting the 3 pieces. The jumbo shrimp Yaki soba is the first time I've had it and it reminded me of ramen with the miso flavors. Overall a great restaurant with fun tapas style dishes to try and share. read more

I've had the best meal there that I've had anywhere in recent memory. The Spicy Tuna Poke I had last night was fantastic! And the Churros with four different delicious sauces were fantastic. A successful fusion of Korean and Mexican flavors. We sat outside on a temperate late July evening. We each ordered the four dish combo The spicy Brussel sprouts were a standout, and the wings hit. We added a duck bun, which was delicious, but more food was unnecessary. Upon noodles were topped with six large shrimp in a savory sauce. Hardly made a dent in the kimchi fried rice. Would have taken it home, but there was no fridge in our hotel room. Finished with a sort of apple crumble topped with ice cream. The miniature churros came back with us. They were still tasty the next day. Service was prompt and friendly despite our outside table, and we received a visit from the chef. Still I regretted sitting outside as we couldn't really hear the trio playing inside. A great experience. read more

My partner and I have been coming to Sala since their first week of opening, it's been one of our favorite places in Beverly. All of the food has been delicious, the bar is beautiful and the live jazz music is a nice ambience and unique! We have watched the drink and food menu evolve in a very positive way! I originally would give 5 stars until the last couple of months. The staff has definitely shifted in a negative way. When first walking in no one is there to greet us and when they do they are a little scatter brained and not the most professional for the price we pay for the overall experience. We recently sat at the bar and it took a while for the bartender to come over and ask what we wanted for drinks. After we finished our first drinks the bartender never came back over until we were almost finished with our meal and said "Are you almost ready for your bill? I have my dinner waiting for me." We would have loved another drink or two but this turned us off so we paid the bill and left. The most recent visit was even worse, we sat outside and we had no idea who our actual server was as a couple staff would come by and say "Hi has someone been over yet to take your order?" We ordered one drink and were never asked again if we wanted anything else. I really hope this improves because the amount of money we happily spend here needs to reflect the overall experience! read more

My friend and I sat at the bar, and our bartender, Luke, was awesome! I had the spicy tuna poke, which was plentiful and yummy! There was also a very cool pianist playing. I will be back to try a cocktail for $10. The prices are very reasonable, and the ambiance and lighting have a romantic vibe. read more

Sat at the bar for drinks and a dessert. Very slow service for drinks, which were fine but nothing special. Beware of the blueberry cobbler! Taste like it was put under the broiler a week ago and grease from another dish spilled on to it. Tasted old and cold and mushy. read more

What a horrible experience all around. 1. Arrival - made a reservation on Open Table and in our request we asked for a table not too close to the music as my wife and I wanted to talk as well. The hostess brought us to a table RIGHT NEXT TO THE MUSIC. We asked for another table and were told no even though there were plenty of tables (7pm). We then turned to leave and she said, let me talk with the manager and see if we can find something. A while passed and she said they're expecting a few big parties but they could move us to another table. Fine. We were there for almost 2 hours (poor service) and there was no large party and many tables not occupied. 2. Service - waited 15 at table before waiter came to get drink order. Another 15 for them to arrive. Another 10 for him to come take order. Food took what seemed to be an extraordinary amount of time to come. Once ready for the check we tried to flag him or anyone for about 10 mins at which point I had to get up and go to the other end of the restaurant where all the staff were just chatting and ask him directly for the bill. Finally, and most frustrating, the waiter never greeted us and was honestly super transactional (yet failed at that too)! 3. Food - what a disappointment. The bao buns were cold and had no flavor, the $26 steak skewers were gristle and poor quality, the fried rice was soupy with lousy saline injected mushy chicken, and the tacos....not sure who puts mounds of rice on a taco with some dry meat with very little flavor but they were NASTY! I have no idea how this restaurant has gotten some great reviews but this was one of the worst experiences I've had in a very long time. For what it's worth, I travel for work weekly and am all over the country/world and eat dinner out at restaurants 3+ times a week. To top it off, when we do get the bill it was executed in one of the handheld devices, which I like. It had preloaded tip options of 20,22, or 25%. We had an outstanding evening at Sala tonight! The small plates service is wonderful and we enjoyed everything we tried! The service was so friendly and the staff is young and very professional which shows that the owner is investing in great training! The chef greeeted our table to see how we were enjoying everything. The live jazz was just a delightful bonus! Please try the Korean wings, the kimchi and chicken fried rice as well as the soba noobkes with mushrooms. Every bite was freshly prepared and scrumptious! Fordessert we shared the banana mango cake, the chocolate layer cake and the caramel cake! We all took home leftovers and the bill was quite reasonable. I'm really surprised to see how positive the reviews are here considering my experience, so I'm wondering if it was just bad luck and a fluke. The restaurant felt really understaffed in terms of wait staff, with our waiter acting as the host as well, in addition to him waiting on almost the entire restaurant himself. There were two bartenders. Our cocktails took 20-25 minutes to come out which just really kinda set the tone on the experience. My cocktail was excellent, while hers wasn't very good. But even though I would have liked a second drink, I was never even asked if I wanted one, nor would I have wanted to wait another 20-25 mins to receive it. We did the four selection taste of Sala option, with edamame, steak tacos, fried rice, and a caramel cake. We also got some shrimp tacos as the plates are on the small side (this isn't a knock, it's a tapas place and these are small plates). The edamame came out quickly (makes sense, there's nothing to it), and then the tacos came out. The tacos were absolutely delicious. I had started to get past the long wait for the cocktails, except then the fried rice never came out. I had to ask the waiter for it after about 20 mins went by of waiting on it after the tacos came out. You could tell the kitchen totally forgot the order somehow. If you've had tapas before, the plates come out rapid fire. Sometimes too fast at most places. Here, though, we had 20 mins in between. The look of the place wasn't anything memorable. And although the food was very good, it wasn't good enough to wait the lengths we did for a subpar dinner from the service perspective. read more

How often can you say that everything was perfect? Sala Restaurant is one of those places where you can! A large group of family members (8 in total) went there last Sunday for a birthday celebration. Lots of people mean lots of questions and concerns. More than usual and yet Julian (?) our server could not have been better with guiding everyone around the menu and taking suggestions. A dozen or so small plates came out exactly in the right order and were exactly as described. Then the "Feast" of a 32oz piece of meat arrived for sharing. Cooked to perfection (you know how hard that is for a serving of that size???!!!) Every cocktail was prepared just as needed. The service was fantastic, As if the evening couldn't be made better, Alex the chef came out to visit the table. What a terrific personality! Made everyone feel special and thanked us for coming in. Really poor and indifferent service. Sat at the bar at about 8 on Friday looking for some drinks and tapas. Two bartenders and a barback behind the bar and the manager also coming back to make drinks. 20 minutes later we were still sitting there. No one acknowledged us or said "just a minute." Yes, they were busy, but not that busy. Finally, the barback tried to help us and took our order. 10 minutes later, nothing. We tried to flag down the manager. She said she was too busy to talk. We had dinner here on a Tuesday night. The place was pretty empty which surprised us because of the many positive reviews, but it was a Tuesday so maybe that was the reason. We both ordered the 4 for $46 deal. One app, handheld, main, and dessert per person. We ordered edamame, shishito peppers, asparagus tacos, Chilean sea bass tacos, kimchi fried rice, shrimp soba noodles, the hazelnut cake and the caramel lava cake. Everything was so well prepared and seasoned. The surprising standout were the asparagus tacos! Seriously couldn't believe how flavorful they were. We will definitely be back but will try a weekend night when it will hopefully be a little more lively inside. read more

So happy this is in Beverly! A unique menu that's all about sharing and such a nice vibe inside. We tried so much and loved it all, my fav was the bao buns and waffle ice cream dessert! The bar area is huge and I def want to come back and chill at the bar. They have fun cocktails and the shareable food is perfect for eating there. There was a live pianist playing, too. I asked the bartender, "Luke" for "light" food suggestions and he recommended the "Spicy Tuna Poke". It was the perfect size and delicious. I can't speak to the food because we left after waiting 10 minutes to get seated despite having a reservation and there being open tables (there was no hostess), another 15 minutes for our waiter to even acknowledge our existence (and only because I flagged him down), 30 minutes for him to take our orders (again, I had to flag him down), and we still didn't even have our first drinks after 45 minutes. The people to one side of us had a similar experience and were calling other restaurants to try to get a table, and the folks on the other side who had already eaten couldn't leave because they couldn't get their check. The waiter spilled more drinks on the ground than made it customers, and he spilled water all over my wife when he finally brought us some. Needless to say, we will not be going back. read more

Great addition to the Beverly restaurant scene. First time, will definitely be back. Details... The space is cozy, modern, open, not fussy. Tapas style menu provides lots of tempting options and the Asian fusion theme does not cross into confusion. Bao buns were pillowy with a nice balance of savory, acid, sweet, heat. Tacos and skewers were cooked correctly and flavorful (stay away from shrimp skewers if you don't love garlic). The spice level of the tuna poke overwhelmed the fish and rice.
