Korean Street Tacos
Thomas T.

The restaurant is modern and cozy with open seating at the bar and reservations are highly recommended. There is love music on Saturdays and the Chef/Owner Alex is really friendly and checks in on guests. He has had experience working at Michelin restaurants oversees. The Korean street tacos is super flavorful with juicy short rib with a nice salsa verde. The pork belly bao bun has a great lime sauce and the pork has a crispy skin. Only regrets with these small dishes was not getting the 3 pieces. The jumbo shrimp Yaki soba is the first time I've had it and it reminded me of ramen with the miso flavors. Overall a great restaurant with fun tapas style dishes to try and share.

Wings.

A successful fusion of Korean and Mexican flavors. We sat outside on a temperate late July evening. We each ordered the four dish combo The spicy Brussel sprouts were a standout, and the wings hit. We added a duck bun, which was delicious, but more food was unnecessary. Upon noodles were topped with six large shrimp in a savory sauce. Hardly made a dent in the kimchi fried rice. Would have taken it home, but there was no fridge in our hotel room. Finished with a sort of apple crumble topped with ice cream. The miniature churros came back with us. They were still tasty the next day. Service was prompt and friendly despite our outside table, and we received a visit from the chef. Still I regretted sitting outside as we couldn't really hear the trio playing inside. A great experience.

Caramel cake, chocolate layer cake, banana mango cake!

We had an outstanding evening at Sala tonight! The small plates service is wonderful and we enjoyed everything we tried! The service was so friendly and the staff is young and very professional which shows that the owner is investing in great training! The chef greeeted our table to see how we were enjoying everything. The live jazz was just a delightful bonus! Please try the Korean wings, the kimchi and chicken fried rice as well as the soba noobkes with mushrooms. Every bite was freshly prepared and scrumptious! Fordessert we shared the banana mango cake, the chocolate layer cake and the caramel cake! We all took home leftovers and the bill was quite reasonable. The finale was the complimentary truffles at the end of the meal, this kind of touch make this spot a cut above. I cannot wait to go back! This is what Rantiul street was missing!

"It's much better to face these kinds of things with a sense of poise and rationality" - i picked it because of this quote on the menu, and i forgot how much i used to love p!atd. i thought to myself, "i've heard this before somewhere..." i loved the bread & roasted garlic butter, however on a little cutting board it was difficult not to make a mess. i guess that's part of what makes it "kitchen table." it is the perfect, round sourdough loaf with the most delicious butter. the roasted chicken was prepared flawlessly. juicy and tender inside, and a perfect crispy skin, just wow. i absolutely loved the selection of spring vegetables, along with the sherry sauce; sautéed spinach, carrots, mushrooms, and onions. the mashed potatoes were perfect once i added extra salt, extra pepper & whipped it up with more of that garlic butter to my liking, however it was prepared great. i requested it without bacon butter, how it typically comes prepared, and the garlic butter is a great substitute. everything was impeccable. i travel to boston often just for food, because i find that the food in beverly, as a whole, is just not up to par, even with all of the marketing. kitchen table is different than any other restaurant in beverly, and now i don't have to travel so far to get the most delicious meals! i am honestly blown away by how amazing my meal was, and i highly recommend kitchen table to anyone in the north shore, and i'd even say it's completely worth going out of your way for. whether solo, a romantic or friend date, or with a small or large group, kitchen table is here to serve (one of the best meals you've had in a long time). there were some other ladies at the bar that were extremely hospitable and helpful as well, i didn't catch their names this time. i wanted to take some pictures at the end of my meal, at closing time when it had emptied out, and molly encouraged me to take all the pictures i needed. just fantastic service by all of the staff. i couldn't be happier with my first experience at kitchen table. here's to many more! ambiance: 4.9/5 food: 5/5 drinks: 5/5 service: 5/5 kitchen table: 5/5

Restaurant Week, as per the Salem Chamber of Commerce's website, is summed up as: "Participating restaurants offered special two- and three-course prix-fixe menus, giving locals and visitors alike a chance to explore, support, and celebrate Salem's vibrant dining scene." For $45 I got cheddar jalapeño fritters, a poutine burger (hamburger with fries cheese and gravy on top, kale Caesar salad with freshly grated cheese, and fresh, piping hot apple cider donuts. The burger was hearty, the fritters popped, and the donuts hit the spot but by far the standout was the kale caesar salad with the creamy dressing over crispy and crunchy kale topped with the tangy grated cheese. A Downeast cider washed it all down and was refreshing. I went on a weekday so there were a few people sitting at the bar with me but overall the place wasn't packed. What I really appreciated was the general manager came to talk to me specifically about their Restaurant Week food selection and to get my feedback. She was super friendly and I told her about the kale caesar salad. Parking is on the street and can be hit or miss because The Babe is right on Washington Street where it starts to curve around the corner. It's worth it to keep circling though. The Babe has different events each night of the week, including Jazz Tuesdays and karaoke Fridays. I had a great time at The Babe and I appreciate how much they support the local Salem community. I am looking forward to going back!

(They clearly saw me there; we made eye contact and the one guy wasn't even doing anything.) After about 10 to 15 minutes of waiting with no service, we were about to leave when a server finally came to our table. Since they were obviously busy and weren't keeping up with the crowd that night, we tried to order two drinks each so they could save a little of their time and we could relax without worrying about if a server was going to take our order again before the end of the week. The server very sharply said that he was NOT going to give us two drinks at a time, CERTAINLY not with drinks of this high alcohol content. We ordered one drink each, cashed out and bounced. The cocktail I got was fine; I could make a slightly worse version at home at a fraction of the price (or even two at once!). We we were told later by a friendlier Salemite at a bar with a better vibe that there is a Massachusetts state law that prohibits having two drinks at once at a bar. Fair enough. Had our server told us that, unfortunately, he wasn't allowed to give us two drinks at once -- instead of making us feel like idiots/degenerates for daring to ask -- we probably would have dropped a lot of vacation money there that night. Oh well; we had a great time at the other places we went.

The serving staff were cordial and despite the fact that the kitchen was VERY hot and the waitstaff quite overheated, we enjoyed a moderately warm dining room and absolutely amazing meal. While deliberating about what to order, we enjoyed a gin & tonic (generous serving of Hendricks) along with their incomparable warm bread with olive oil and cloves of roasted melting garlic for dipping. We chose 2 excellent appetizers for our meal: Calamari Fritti and Mussels. The calamari were crisp and light, with a few fried jalapeños in the mix with marinara sauce. The mussels were cooked in white wine with tomatoes and delightful spices. We each had a glass of Orvieto, a crisp and slightly sweet white wine that the server allowed us to taste before ordering. After having satisfied our "warm day" appetites, we settled on two desserts (both excellent): Tiramisu and Crème Brulée. It's in a great location in downtown Beverly with a large parking lot behind it, so parking was easy. Unfortunately, the food didn't live up to expectations. We ordered two appetizers: the calamari and the mushroom arancini. The calamari was the strangest version I've ever had, mixed with jalapeños, arugula, tomatoes, and marinara sauce placed underneath. The combination didn't really work, and I wasn't a fan of the sauce being on the bottom instead of on the side. The arancini was better, but still odd. It was served over some kind of Alfredo sauce, which again felt unnecessary. It seems like this place really likes putting sauce on the bottom of dishes, and it didn't enhance the food. The real highlight of the night was the drinks. We both ordered espresso martinis, and they were honestly the best espresso martinis I've ever had. There were several other cocktails that looked great as well, so we'll definitely be back to try more drinks. Overall, the food was underwhelming and didn't meet my expectations. I wouldn't come back for the food, as their takes on classic dishes just didn't work for me. That said, if you're looking for great cocktails, Soma is absolutely worth it, especially for the espresso martinis. Get dinner elsewhere in Beverly and stop by Soma for drinks!
