    Caesar salad with shrimp
    Marni M.

My family wanted to take my mother out for a birthday celebration. Not wanting to deal with the hassle of traveling all the way into Boston, we decided to check out this very close by establishment. We did not make reservations for a Tuesday night as we thought it wasn't going to be very busy. Upon arriving and having a difficult time finding parking on the street, we were sorely wrong. Therefore, I would definitely recommend making reservations in advance. Fortunately for us, another group of our size happened to just cancel so we were able to get a seat right away. It is a beautifully decorated and casual/formal ambience. For clarification, there is a bakery next-door that also provides a good sized menu. There is not a connection between them even though they are both owned by the same party. For appetizers in addition to the free bread and olive spread, we shared the brussels sprouts and octopus. The octopus was cooked well over a creamy and neutral complementary hummus. Brussels sprouts were definitely finished in the broiler as they thoroughly charred without being burned. Due to their caramelization, they did have a slight sweetness factor which was very satisfying. For entrees, we tried their Chicken Milanese, Shrimp fettuccini, duck, Pappardelle, Caesar salad with shrimp, and Eggplant lasagna. Lucky for me everybody in my party allowed me to try a bite of their dish. I was happy to realize that everything was honestly delicious. The chicken Milanese had a very thin layer of crispiness with the Barata cheese and balsamic glaze. All pastas are made in-house and you can definitely taste the TLC that they put into their food. The fettuccine is a great alternative if you want some thing a little lighter as the Pappardelle is a little heavy since they use sausage as their choice of protein. Duck was tender and flavorful over the bed of rice noodles and vegetables. My mom loved the eggplant and almost ate the whole thing (very rare for her FYI). Even though we were all beyond satisfied and full from our meals, we still decided to share a chocolate lava cake to honor my mothers birthday one more time. It looked like it came out of a textbook as it was exactly how you'd imagine it to be with a scoop of vanilla ice cream. Overall, we had a stellar experience with even better service. We couldn't have asked for a more perfect place to celebrate, I am already looking forward to coming back and checking out the location next door as well. I recommend others to do the same!

Great food. Busy place. A bit loud. Service was outstanding. The eggplant parm was not as good as the reviews led me to believe.

Husband had the clam chowder and haddock sandwich with onion rings. The food was great and exactly what we were looking for. The clam chowder was one of my favorites from all we sampled this trip. Among the many options presented, I chose the Caesar salad. The total for this meal? $49! (!!) The fish was listed on the menu as "market price." I neglected to ask what the price of roughly six ounces of fried white fish was at the "market" but discovered when the check came that it's $34. I'm not a fine-diner, but I'm pretty sure that 34 bucks typically gets you a much nicer dish at a much nicer restaurant. Charging that much for fish and chips is frankly dishonorable...but I guess it's part-and-parcel of the "get while the getting's good" ethic driving the affordability crisis in this country. Next, to the salad: I was charged $5 for the substitution, though the server did not warn me about this upcharge. Personally, I think it's understood when you ask about substitutions, that you are asking about FREE substitutions. If there's an incremental charge to substitute, say, a potato for french fries (I'm sure there is at Dockside, and I'd guess it's larger than it shuld be), it's incumbent on the server to declare it. Otherwise, what makes it a "substitution?" To summarize: nice enough place, greedy owners, OK but ultimately deficient service. Eat here if you want to spend $55 or so on an acceptable dinner that should cost 30 percent less.

Nothing felt gimmicky, everything was thoughtfully prepared. The ambiance is outstanding. Walking in, it felt like one of the better spots I've dined in Boston proper or New York. The space has real character. Our server Lou was exceptional. First-timers at a tapas-style restaurant, and he made sure we understood the portions, guided us through choices we weren't sure about, and kept us from over-ordering. That level of attentiveness makes a difference. The food was outstanding. The broccoli alone (yes, broccoli) was a standout. The ahi tuna and rice cake were equally impressive. My martini was perfectly executed. The owner came by, introduced himself, and actually spent time with each table. That kind of engagement from ownership tells you everything about the place's standards. I'm already planning my return to work through the rest of the menu. Whether it's a full dinner or just drinks and a snack, Njord Haven is worth the trip.

Then we had the Mussels which were very good, it had lots of garlic which we love and it has white wine with heirloom tomatoes. Both appetizers were amazing. Now for my dish I went with the Sin Burger due to seeing a bunch awards for this burger so I had to try. So the burger I ordered was made medium with bacon, truffle aioli and Swiss cheese. We were then served rolls with a completely flavorless dipping oil. We each opted for the Chicken Voldostana, which came with very little spinach, one small piece of prosciutto, and was drowned in lemon sauce, which overpowered any flavor that the meal might have had. Neither of our meals looked anything like the photo that was displayed on the TV in the dining room. We decided to split the Dream Bomba dessert special, which was described as caramel surrounded by peanut butter gelato, encased in chocolate. We were hard pressed to find any caramel, and the peanut butter ice cream (too hard to be gelato) also had no flavor.
