Feigning for a grilled cheese and hearing the hype, the boss and I entered this local place (yes we are locals), and was instructed by BOTH bartenders to have a seat anywhere. Over the next 20 minutes (without service or even a "come to the bar to order even though you're sitting at a table") we watched as three more couples walked in, met by the bartender (who passed by us to accomplish ) brought to a table, and then served. Looks can be deceiving. There might be a line for this restaurant but 1) it's worth it 2) the line goes fast! We chose outdoor seating as it wasn't too cold outside and it was a great choice. I'm not sure how this place gets all the good reviews. We had a group of 7 of us and our food was all very mediocre, and my sandwich I asked for vegan cheese (lactose allergy) and they gave me full vegan sandwich that was literally so gross I had two bites and stopped because it was seriously so gross. The restaurant could use a visit from an inspector, it doesn't appear clean and isnt comfortable or good. There are many other places to visit for a much better experience and taste. The tables were very small, not ideal for how much food we got lol but the vibe inside was very fun. It is a bar but the creative menu items drew me in. I love a corn dog and was satisfied with the ones here! I think the mocktail I got had non-alcoholic spirits which I really tend to not like, it was a bit bitter/sour to me. We got the spinach and artichoke dip and it was alright... I didn't really like the chips, the quality was like store bought tortilla chips to me and they broke really easily which was frustrating when trying to dip. The sandwich I got was veeeeeeery crispy and thick and hard to eat at times. There were bites of it that I liked but there were some bites where I tasted the rind of the brie which I know is edible but its a bit sharper and I just don't like the taste of it unfortunately. I don't think it pairs well with the strawberry like the creamy part of the brie does. I do appreciate the creativity though! Just still had the quality of bar food despite trying to elevate the ideas of a bar menu. read more

Stopped in on Halloween got a Beetle Juice cocktail and a classic grilled cheese. The vibes and staff are super fun and friendly we waiting about 20 minutes in line but it was worth it. Recommended to us by some locals as a great place for "tourists" to go. I can't agree, since the two bartenders on duty were slinging drinks to their buddies while ignoring us. (They clearly saw me there; we made eye contact and the one guy wasn't even doing anything.) After about 10 to 15 minutes of waiting with no service, we were about to leave when a server finally came to our table. Since they were obviously busy and weren't keeping up with the crowd that night, we tried to order two drinks each so they could save a little of their time and we could relax without worrying about if a server was going to take our order again before the end of the week. The server very sharply said that he was NOT going to give us two drinks at a time, CERTAINLY not with drinks of this high alcohol content. We ordered one drink each, cashed out and bounced. The cocktail I got was fine; I could make a slightly worse version at home at a fraction of the price (or even two at once!). We we were told later by a friendlier Salemite at a bar with a better vibe that there is a Massachusetts state law that prohibits having two drinks at once at a bar. Fair enough. Had our server told us that, unfortunately, he wasn't allowed to give us two drinks at once -- instead of making us feel like idiots/degenerates for daring to ask -- we probably would have dropped a lot of vacation money there that night. Oh well; we had a great time at the other places we went. read more

This place was recommended to me by a friend who's a local. We were not disappointed! They are known for their grilled cheese and there are so many to choose from. My husband and I both got the La Femme which has apple and brie. So delicious. We also got the tomato soup, which was just ok. We mainly got it to dip our sandwiches in, but the La Femme probably wasn't the best choice for that. Still, it was all really satisfying. Also the sandwiches came with a bag of chips, which was nice. Didn't try their cocktails but they looked fun. Ambiance is cute, kind of dark and divey. They have TVs playing movies and TV show. Service was attentive, although one of the servers seemed a little reserved, but maybe she was having a bad day. Overall, it was a good little pit stop before we drove back to Boston. read more

All Souls Lounge is a cozy little bar with quite the impressive menu focused on gourmet grilled cheese and hot dogs. Prices are reasonable and service is quick. In addition, to the menu, there's a wide variety of drinks to includes a few mocktails; the shrub and soda tastes like a spicy strawberry and worth being ordered. Now onto the important aspect... the hot dogs. I'm always down for a good Chicago dog, and it's a solid version with the exception of the hot dog bun. The buns are made for lobster rolls, and frankly is too much bread compared to the hot dog itself. Now what I was truly excited about was seeing an Icelandic hotdog on the menu. There's many reasons to visit Iceland, because it's a stunningly beautiful country, but also visit for the hotdogs, because they're amazing. When it was delivered to the table, I was so excited because it looked amazing; however, it was a miss. An Icelandic hotdogs has two different types of ketchup, a curry mustard, and fried onions; the surprise of it is that the hot dog takes on a bit of a sweetness because of the mustard followed by the crunch of the onions. Unfortunately, the substitution of ingredients, namely the brown mustard, made the overall hot dog salty rather than sweet. They came out super hot and melty on buttery A&J bread (a little burnt but still good) with a fresh pickle and chips for a reasonable price. We also enjoyed the strawberry chile shrub (mocktail) and Batida 1900 for bevvies. Great bar with delicious food! Came here with my friend after a full day of exploring Salem, and the food really hit the spot. We started off with some tasty spinach dip. For our main meals, I ordered the santa fe dog, my friend ordered the seattle dog, and we both shared mac and cheese with chili. It was all very delicious. The service was great too. The inside of the bar was intimate with dark, romantic lighting. It felt cozy and was not very loud. We did not try any drinks this time around, but will be sure to try some next time.
