After having it on my list for months, I came to The Babe during Restaurant Week in Salem in January 2026. Restaurant Week, as per the Salem Chamber of Commerce's website, is summed up as: "Participating restaurants offered special two- and three-course prix-fixe menus, giving locals and visitors alike a chance to explore, support, and celebrate Salem's vibrant dining scene." For $45 I got cheddar jalapeño fritters, a poutine burger (hamburger with fries cheese and gravy on top, kale Caesar salad with freshly grated cheese, and fresh, piping hot apple cider donuts. The burger was hearty, the fritters popped, and the donuts hit the spot but by far the standout was the kale caesar salad with the creamy dressing over crispy and crunchy kale topped with the tangy grated cheese. A Downeast cider washed it all down and was refreshing. I went on a weekday so there were a few people sitting at the bar with me but overall the place wasn't packed. What I really appreciated was the general manager came to talk to me specifically about their Restaurant Week food selection and to get my feedback. She was super friendly and I told her about the kale caesar salad. Parking is on the street and can be hit or miss because The Babe is right on Washington Street where it starts to curve around the corner. It's worth it to keep circling though. The Babe has different events each night of the week, including Jazz Tuesdays and karaoke Fridays. I had a great time at The Babe and I appreciate how much they support the local Salem community. They do a good job at this place. They stay busy and take mostly reservations for the regular tables but make room for walk-ins at the bar. The bartender we had was quick and friendly, and we liked the draft beer offerings and the mixed drinks. We were very happy with our food. We chose to share the apple cider donuts (starting the meal with dessert), which were just as advertised. Delicious. We also tried the buffalo wings and the breakfast burrito. Yum! Delightful flavors. Only reason for 4 of 5 stars is the bathrooms needed some cleanup. I imagine it's hard to keep up with crowd control, so I hand waved it overall but is an important detail that sometimes gets overlooked when you get busy. Also easy enough to correct. Regardless, we had a really good visit. I wouldn't hesitate to go back again. read more

Brunch was really great here! The French toast reminded us of a fried dough, so crunchy and yummy. I was hesitant about ordering a cold brew, if you are picky about your coffee you know it can be a hit or miss, but it was great as well! Service was fast. The food was unexpectedly fantastic! We started with the mozzarella pockets which were devoured by the 4 of us! I would recommend 2 orders (each one comes with 2 pockets). For lunch, we ordered the BBQ burger, ranch hand chicken Sammie and Carolina gold chicken sammie. We thoroughly enjoyed the meal! The food was amazing! The garlics fries had real garlic and were delicious! Usually restaurants just use salt but they did not! The French toast was delicious as well! Very crispy and not eggy which I love. Service was friendly and helpful. The ambiance is fun as well. I would have given 5/5 but the bathrooms were extremely small. A solid addition to Salem! The interior is quite the vibe with a handful of high tops, low tops and bar seating. We tried the Veggie burger, which is refreshingly homemade and fantastic and the French fries are fair style and absolutely delicious! We also tried the falafel on a Caesar salad, and it missed the mark and it lacked a bit of flavor, but did have a beautiful green color. The side of falafel was quite generous on top of the salad. The Caesar salad lacked a bit of flavor as well. We did not try the cocktails, but the cocktail list was appealing and well crafted. The service was absolutely fantastic. I write this review as a random customer on a weekday at 2pm ish and I had no idea or preconceived notion of what this place would be and I got to say it was Awesome! From the minute my friend and walked in the doors we felt welcome and comfortable. Just looking for a drink and a quick bite and The Babe did not disappoint. David at the Bar to his quick change into attentive waiter was seamless. The food was top notch! Coming from LA, I can say that Salem slayed the uber stylish and oh so trendy Gabagool that you can't get at home into a delicious sandwich! A solid 3.5 stars that I'll round up just because the staff was so nice. I checked it out on an off-season day when it was pretty dead inside. Everyone working there was incredibly friendly and attentive. I'm going to go out on a limb and guess that one reason this place might be celebrated is because it's a little farther out of the way from touristy spots and perhaps a place to avoid some of the worst crowds come autumn. Everything was standard fare for a cocktail bar. Nothing was bad, nothing was memorable or outstanding, and everything was fine. Had a couple of cocktails and appetizers (maybe the entrees are better?). I could not tell you what drink I had. I think this is one of those spots where you can't go wrong, but it also feels like it could be a cocktail bar in any city in this country. The Reuben was non-traditional but still one of the best Reuben's I've ever had - no sauerkraut but the slaw and sauce was amazing. The downside is that paying $16.00 for a sandwich that does not come with a side is a bit ridiculous. If you want fries, they are about $6. The Babe opened recently in Salem, in the former Major Magleashe's Pub space on Washington St. The place was redone which has a full service cocktail bar with seating (11 seats), high top table seating and regular tables. There is also space in the front corner window area for live music. I stopped by The Babe for some food recently. They happened to be offering their brunch menu which offers egg dishes, chilaquiles, crispy French toast, breakfast sandwiches/burgers (a la carte), latke hash browns, fries, salads, wings, mozzarella pockets, and lemon ricotta donuts. The regular menu offers sandwiches/subs (a la carte), fries, salads, wings, roasted cauliflower, fried mozzarella pockets, and lemon ricotta donuts. The pricing is moderate, but in line with other restaurants in the area. I took a seat up at the bar and the bartender took my order after I quickly look over the brunch menu. Since I already had breakfast earlier with eggs, I requested the regular Cheese Steak Sub ($16 plus tax), chopped steak with grilled mushrooms & onions, melted provolone cheese and mozzarella pocket on a firm chewy sesame seed hoagie roll. A mozzarella pocket was missing from my sub and the bartender went back to the kitchen to request it which was brought out hot in about 6 minutes. The hot & crispy mozzarella pocket is definitely a game changer for any sandwich. For dessert, I ordered some Lemon Ricotta Donuts ($8 plus tax), but it took about 25 minutes to come out, which had to bake and worth it. There was 4 large donut balls smothered with cinnamon sugar on the outside with soft lemon ricotta filling inside and served over berry jam. The check was $25.68 with tax and before tip. Overall, the food I ordered was quite good, though there were some delays and hiccup getting things correct. The service overall was adequate and I was given another refill on the ice water as I waited for dessert to come out. If I lived in Boston I would be here every weekend!! Freddy, bartender and mixologist extraordinaire, shared this bacon infused bourbon cocktail he created for their upcoming fall menu. It was heaven! So smooth, with just a bit of sweetness, and the scent of the sage on top was perfect. I'm not usually a big fan of rosemary, but Freddy killed it with this blackberry rosemary gin concoction. The bar is so inviting- kind of a glam dark academia vibe with velvety soft deep green chairs and flashes of gold. You have to give it a try. The staff was not very welcoming. After the meal I asked the other members of my party about the service and they said the same thing without any of my input. The service felt some what snobby. I could be off on my assessment but that was my feeling. It felt ironic For a restaurant that serves peanut butter and jelly sandwiches. Additionally, our party of 6 was in the rear and the servers would hand the drinks and food to the person closest to the POS and they'd have to hand them down the table. The drinks would spill as they got passed down. I don't understand why the servers couldn't just deliver the food and drinks directly to each of us. On the plus side, the food was very good. The burger was great and the beat salad was excellent. Maybe if you fit the demographic they want in the restaurant then you may get better service. I hate to give a rating because I don't want to hurt a restaurants business. But I wanted to give a counter to all the 5 star reviews. I would give this restaurant a 3.5. Get here before they get found! It's a secret gem! Came for Brunch- love the feel, it's like dive bar/ cozy nana's kitchen/eclectic vibe. Came for Brunch and was blown away, french toast felt like carnival fried dough happiness (only ate half) every bite was heavy with sweet flavor. Drinks were fresh and delicious; rabbit hole (celery salt rim) and smoke signal were my favorites. Staff were attentive and friendly, we sat ate and chatted for a while. We preferred bar seats since they were not quite busy yet but liked all the hightop seating and little nooks of tables. Patio is cute too. Great neighborhood feel. My family and I came in at opening and had a truly wonderful experience with every single person on staff. Our waitress was wonderful. The bar tender was welcoming, kind, and so great with our children. The manager was equally as kind and accommodating. I could not give a more outstanding review. The food was phenomenal. When you're in Salem doing "the Salem thing" you need to treat yourself to The Babe, and I'm not saying you'll be spending big bucks to enjoy this place. It's not about the money. It's about the experience. Sure, you've got to leave the primary streets of downtown Salem, but you're not walking far and the reward upon arrival is well worth it. The Babe is an renovation and change of ownership from what used to be a fantastic neighborhood bar and grill that I was a regular at for 1000yrs and when it changed, my first thought was 'crap' there goes an old Salem institution. Boy was I wrong. The Babe is going to be a new Salem institution! This place is great! A fabulously creative (but not nutzo extensive) menu. The Best Veggie burger (so I've been told by companions), fantastic red meat burgers, chicken parm sandwiches, excellent grilled califlower app. Super friendly service and a neat, kewl decor to boot.
