Not sure why this restaurant received less than stellar reviews as our experience was phenomenal. Concierge assisted us with making a reservation day of and we were able to easily snag a spot at 9pm for a weekday. The restaurant is much larger than anticipated, spanning across a few floors. Servers were friendly and gave amazing recommendations, even stopping us from ordering too much. The sangria was one of the best we've had and the bread was excellent with the butter the cheese. They do charge for these starters, but it's listed on the menu. I made the mistake of eating too much bread before our mains came. We enjoyed the clams and grouper head with a side of greens and potatoes. everything was delicious! It's big enough to share for two, and we still couldn't manage to finish all the food. We wanted to try dessert as it was our last meal in Lisbon, but unfortunately ate way too much and couldn't stomach anything else. Would highly, highly recommend this restaurant! I don't understand all the hype. The restaurant was good, not great. The service was very good for the most part. The decor was dated but in a kind of cool way. Though I must say it does not match the vibe portrayed by the website. It is very bright inside and feels very 1980s-1990s. People said it's high end and to dress well but there were tourists showing up in shorts and t-shirt. Which is fine but again, not the vibe I expected. To start I said I didn't want the couvert. They took away part of it and left the rest. We just decided what the hell and ate some of it. The cured meat (I forget what kind) left a strange film under my tongue I've never experienced eating similar meat so I didn't eat much of it. The cod was very bony. Parts of it were cooked beautifully and parts were very overcooked and chewy. The potatoes were too salty but well cooked. The greens had grit in them and crunched uncomfortably in my teeth. The steak was lovely but the accompanying rice was hard and bland. It was the only place I've eaten in Portugal (and I've tried a pretty large variety of types) where the sever held the credit card machine in front of me asking if I wanted to enter a tip as I was in the process of looking at the bill and paying. I would have tipped anyway but it was definitely off-putting. Maybe the hype is just residue from a bygone era? Made reservations the night before because I thought they had rice duck but it is only a special on Tuesday and we went on a Wednesday. Was expecting more traditional Portuguese food. Place looks small from the outside but that is only the ground floor, the lace is actually huge. Pictures of celebrities packed the walls, saw one of Rob Lowe but all others are of Portuguese celebs I assume. Service was very slow, thought they forgot about us a couple of times. Guy slicing Iberian pork makes his rounds and it looks so good you order one for the table. Warm bread and olives already on the table and they are not complimentary. Places packed for a Wednesday night and the food was good but on the pricey side. It was not as fun as the many smaller family owned spots we were accustomed to where the staff interacted with you more and made you feel like family and we stayed a lot longer at these places. This place felt more sterile. We did not get that warm welcoming feeling here. If you are not into that the this place is fine as the food is very good. Really enjoyed our dinner at Solar dos Presuntos and definitely recommend making a reservation as there was a very long line of walk-ins during a weeknight. When you're seated, your table already has bread, meats, cheese, and butter so feel free to keep or give back as these all cost money. Big fan of the 2 flavored butters! We went with the Octopus and Seafood Rice for our entrees, and I was very very happy. The octopus was perfectly cooked and came with potatoes and veggies. They were gracious enough to split the Seafood Rice on our plates so that we could share more easily. I'm glad they told us the portions were large so we didn't order any apps. The staff was very friendly but the ambience threw me off a little bit cuz I didn't really get the concept. Classic? Modern? What do you want to be? It also seemed that for the owners it's more important to show that local celebrities are visiting regularly with a slide show on a big ass flat screen. Also the menu I wasn't able to catch in what direction it wants to go. However, be aware that the cheese and salami plate they offer isn't complimentary--if you eat it, you'll be charged, and many patrons seem unaware since they don't clearly mention this. We were here for a quick snack so we didn't order too much. We knew the ham and cheese that was already on our table was optional, but we went for it and it did not disappoint. I can't get enough of the pato negro. Personal favorite was the Galician style octopus, which I've not had anywhere else. We also had oysters which tasted pretty fresh. Finally, the cod fish soup which doesn't look like much, but the fish with the zesty tomato and onion flavors made me want more. We felt a bit of pressure to order more from the waitress, and we wanted to, but this was technically 2nd dinner, so it wasn't happening. Maybe they can ease up on that though. A friend took us here while on our trip to lisbon. This was one of our fancier dinner nights. Our server Rui was very attentive, helpful, and spoke some English. He was very patient with us despite being so indecisive. Keep in mind there is a limit to your reservation time. We arrived a bit late so we needed to rush to not overextend. The breads and cheeses are very good. We had a selection of seafood appetizers recommended by Rui. My main was the pork pernil which was good but was a bit much for me after some time. Hands down my favorite seafood Portuguese restaurant in Lisbon! If you want fabulous seafood this spot is for you, plus the locals love it which says a lot. At the entrance there is a fish tank and what's really cool is this restaurant has multiple stories. This spot gets super packed so I'd recommend coming for an early lunch. The staff were very friendly and hospitable. Service was 5/5 stars and they treat you well. We were offered suggestions and everything was cooked to perfection. You must start with a cocktail, a sangria is classic. For the food we started with the jamon and cheese plate, decent but nothing out of this world. However, when it comes to their shareable seafood tapas you must indulge yourself as these were some of the best bites I've ever had. Highly recommend their garlic shrimp appetizer as the shrimp are super buttery and full of garlic. Delicious. We kept soaking up the butter with our bread, so good. DO NOT GO THERE! The food was horrible and dare I say disgusting. And it's such a shame because I specifically picked this restaurant to celebrate my husband's birthday. Out of all the restaurants we have been to in Portugal, this was by far the worst. Firstly, the service was abysmal -- felt rush, inauthentic, and very impersonal. We were first seated by the welcome area with everyone walking by us. I asked if we could be moved. We were then placed in a corner where the wine glasses and plates were stored, so it was not ideal as waiters were constantly reaching over me to grab glasses and plates. Second, putting bread, prosciutto, cheese, olives on the table, and offering fried calamari without us asking for it... acting like it was complimentary, only to charge us in the end was so dishonest. Thank god we refused the fried calamari because we would have been forced to pay for that and I just know it was not tasty. Thirdly, I had the Galician Style Octopus for appetizers, and the Portuguese-Style Roasted Cod for entree. Both dishes were bland and disgusting and did not taste fresh. Not once did the waiter come to our table to see how our meals were. We skipped desert because we were afraid it'd also be bland and disgusting like the rest of the meal. My husband had a shrimp dish for his appetizer and a steak dish that included cheap looking potato chips and a nasty spinach side that was supposed to be creamed spinach, but it was just a blub of green stuff, nothing creamy about it. He said it was the worst meal he's ever eaten. Needless to say he didn't enjoy his birthday dinner. I complained to the restaurant and the owner implied that my palate was not sophisticated enough for their food. Underwhelming. They have whole bunch of stuff on the table to ruins your appetite from bread, cheese, and meat platter. Cheese was OK and I only liked the salami off the meat platter but noticed that they set these up for all the tables as soon as they clean off the old ones so who know how long it's been out and make you waste your $ on stuff you won't enjoy or finish. I made reservation on the night of the Portugal vs. Switzerland game and found out that there was only one TV within the whole restaurant. While fully empty they claimed that the room with the TV was reserved so my mood was pretty sour but was game was uneventful anyways with 6 to 1. We ordered wine but our server had horrible recommendations and would just grab the selections that were already opened from the room that others were drinking. On the third try, he just poured us two glasses of port wine which we didn't like at all. The server was just nonchalant and seemed to not care. The octopus dish that they're famous for was just bad especially we just ate Solar 31 that day which had the best octopus dish we've had. The texture tasted like it was more dried than cooked and tasted more like a squid. The flavor was lacking with just olive oil and red pepper flakes. At least we ended on a good note with the black rice but while the seafood was good, the risotto was a waste. The server misunderstood and packed us all of our leftovers which we did not eat. This was our last meal in Portugal and our curse of the last meal on our trips continues. read more

This was our second option on the Eater Lisbon list so we dauntingly made the 15-min walk over with hopes that there would be an opening for at least one out of the 200 tables they reportedly have. Once we entered the restaurant, we were entranced by the large tank of live seafood. It reminded me of Chinese restaurants. We were greeted by a sage appearing Portuguese woman who gave us the good news that they indeed had an opening for two as long as we promised that we would be done eating by 9pm. That was not an issue. Our table was on the second floor. It was a small and cozy section with tables lined with white table cloths. The walls were decorated with a myriad of framed photographs. The set up reminded me of the Italian restaurants in Little Italy. Our table already had a meat and cheese plate with olives and bread. They are not complimentary but you can turn some away. We had some of the best cheeses and butter here! The Brie was phenomenal. We then split the shrimp appetizer in this garlicky buttery sauce that I could not get enough of. I thought our shrimps looked overcooked, but they actually didn't taste overcooked. By this point, my friend and I were very satisfied with our food and wine choices and were excited for our main courses to arrive. Our main courses were good, but not spectacular. We would probably not order them again. I got the octopus dish, which I thought was missing a citrusy flavor. The potatoes and spinach were cooked well, but nothing special in terms of flavor. My friend's Portuguese steak was cooked more well done than she would like. So if you get this, order it medium rare. It was also saltier than expected from the extra slice of cured meat on top. She was not a fan of the spinach. When asked why. She said it only tasted like "mushy spinach." Overall, we were glad we got a table here. This spot is loved by locals for a traditional Portuguese meal. The octopus entree was sublime, saltier than I am used to but that is all of the Portuguese cuisine. Would consider it for one good meal in a city of a grad trip, anniversary, or special occasion. Most travellers cant eat like this everyday The table was arranged with appetizers. There are lots of staff around, and you will enter and be told about a wait time then you will walk upstairs. It was interesting instructions, I was waiting by the door but you are meant to walk up the stairs. The atmosphere is old money, and if you are a younger person dining alone like I was you may have some heads turning. Returning to Solar dos Presuntos for the third time. Unfortunately, Agostino, the star waiter for over 20 years has retired. This time, legendary Joaquim took great care of us. Started with a fresh and flavorful octopus platter. This time we went for a leg of pork roasted to perfection, soft and delicious. We wrapped up lunch with their traditional house dessert Avó Luísa. Yes!!!! I highly recommend this place. We went as a family of 3 when visiting. Me and my husband with our 6yo. They are very accommodating to the kids. The staff goes above and beyond! The food was spectacular. We went for dinner at the beginning of our trip and decided to go for lunch in our last day in Lisbon. Just understand the food that is on the table is not included, you have to pay for the bread, butter, olives, meat, cheese, etc. that is just a Portuguese custom to do this. It's called a couvert. They really don't need to try to make extra money off people. I'm used to bread baskets being charged automatically in Europe but not other stuff where people may not realize. You can ask them to take it away but it's a bit awkward.
