pistachio pinwheel
Helena L.

tldr popular bakery serving up a variety of pastries with limited hours and grab and go set up 3.75/5 got the gruyère + mustard croissant - it had a very strong mustard flavor and the cheese was pretty solid. the croissant itself was flaky and i did like the sesame seeds! if ur not a big fan of mustard i would skip 3/5 also got the pistachio pinwheel, which had a strong citrus note and barely any pistachio flavor so would opt to get something else next time overall it's worth it if the line is short and perhaps i'll try to focaccia next time. service was fine and quick. wishing they open up their hours for more days in the week.

Gruyère Mustard Croissant

We came here and got the Gruyère Mustard Croissant. It was delicious. Lots of seeds, flaky pastry, and gruyère and a smear of mustard inside. There was a long line but it went quick. Would go back.

Up and coming bakery with a lot of potential. I was fully prepared to wait 60 minutes for their pastries on Friday, but to my surprise the line was only about 5 minutes (came around 10:15am). The pastries (croissants and snail) were pretty good. Favorite one was the sun butter with strawberry filling. The tarts were pretty good also, but I was hoping for more texture.

Finally got to try the guava tart from Sol Bakery and yes, it's worth the hype!! Love the thin crust and the perfect amount of guava curd. The tomato danish was also spot on as well. Definitely one of my top bakeries in the city :) Need to try the passion fruit tart next!!

We got there super early because we were scared by all the line stories. But no line. It was hard not to get one of everything but we had an admirable pastry picnic in the park. My favorite was the polenta cake which had raspberries and some kind of stone fruit in it. But everything was excellent. We also got guava tart, passion fruit tart, cardamom cream choux, blackberry almond tart, Gruyère mustard croissant (my 2nd fave), and the Gruyère gougère (also delish). If you being two friends and split you can try a bit of everything staff very friendly. Would definitely go back.

Marinara foccacia, olive foccacia, Gruyère & mustard croissant

I've been here twice: - First time on a Sunday around noon. There was nothing but cookies left. - Second time on a Sunday around 11am. They had Foccacia, some croissants, cake, and cookies. Ratings: - Gruyère & mustard croissant (3.5/5) - Olive foccacia (4.5/5) - Marinara focaccia (4/5) - Chocolate chip cookie (3.5/5) - Lemon poppyseed cookie (3.5/5) The croissant and cookies were good but nothing to rave about. The foccacias were awesome--perfect texture and fluffiness. The olive was the best!

Coffee Coconut Croissant Snail, Gruyère & Mustard Croissant, Chocolate Sourdough Cake, Cherry x Almond Cream Tart, Passion Fruit Tart

Line was around the corner and 1/3 way down the block 10 mins before opening (9am) on a Friday. By 9:50 they were sold out of several items I'd had my eyes on - guava tart, twice baked, choux, gougère.. We tried: Coffee Coconut Croissant Snail $7 Gruyère & Mustard Croissant $6.50 Chocolate Sourdough Cake $7 Cherry x Almond Cream Tart $11 Passion Fruit Tart $11 Everything seemed to me technically on point - the snail and croissant's lamination, the very moist cake with a slight crust for texture, the delicate tarts. Nothing was too sweet and were the smaller side which is oddly refreshing - we don't need a cloyingly sweet almond croissant the size of my face. The coffee coconut and mustard flavors were surprisingly subtle. Chocolate cake was to-die-for, with a slight salty-sweet crumble on top, for someone who doesn't love cakes. The tarts were very flavorful, different textures. Think the guava would have been more unique but we enjoyed the passionfruit and almond cherry as well. While we enjoyed these artisanal pastries and appreciate the craft, flavors didn't seem special enough for me personally to wait an hour for, with the risk of selling out of what you want. They said they bake throughout the AM so some items get replenished but a gamble for sure. We did swing by couple times on Sundays around noon and they were sold out of everything but cookies and once some sesame focaccia, but the line is only like 5-10 people deep at that hour, so worth checking if you're around!

I wanted to like Sol Bakery. The day I visited it was pouring rain. The line wrapped around the corner and went half way up Central Street. The pastries were okay - not very good...either not flaky as croissants should be (I had the sunflower cream with huckleberry jam-flat and not crisp). The guava cream choux was overly sweet. The chocolate croissant was not memorable. The cake with poppy & blood orange was like a poppy seed muffin :( In this remote (Outer Hayes) neighborhood, there's still not a lot of choice for fine pastry. Sad to say...

Chocolate Croissant

Unfortunately they were sold out of the guava tarts and the twice-baked croissants with sunflower cream and huckleberries when we arrived around 11:20, but the silver lining was that the focaccia had just come out. We got the ramps and potato, marinara, and olive focaccia, which were great. The flavor was good and the texture and airiness of the dough was fantastic. We ordered the regular croissant and the chocolate ones. They were okay, and I would not return for them. I still want to try the twice-baked croissant with sunflower cream and huckleberries and the guava tart. The line extended around the corner and was about a 15 minute wait. The staff was friendly. At this time, they limit you to two of the same item per group. We wanted 3 chocolate croissants for our group of four, but could only get two. They explained that this allows for more people to purchase items before running out. There is one table inside if you want to eat there, but the area is small.

Chocolate Chip Cookie

On a weekend afternoon, there was virtually no line, but most of their items were out. There was only chocolate chip cookies and carrot walnut cake remaining. I just tried their simple drip coffee and a chocolate chip cokie. The chocolate chip cookie still have a gooey mix of soft center and chocolate, while being overall crispy. The drip coffee was straightforward and gave me the energy I needed for the rest of the day. My friend had the opportuntity to try their carrot walnut cake and appreciated the texture and taste!

Nectarine

Pretty good!! Worth the hype? Debatable. Tried the viral guava tart and woah ok that was is awesome, would love to try the other tart options. The twice baked croissant almost tastes burnt a little, which sounds like it would be part of the experience so maybe it's just personal taste. Nectarine pastry was nice, but nothing crazy

gougère
Sarah C.

we came at 2pm so most of the pastries were already sold out (they close at 3pm). the staff were pretty sweet! we got the: - apricot chausson ($7.50): the base was flaky and light, and the filling wasn't too sweet! - gougère with gruyere and herbs ($6): unfortunately I wasn't a huge fan of it as it had a pretty strong mustard (?) flavor? but I'd love to come back to try more

Pain au Chocolat
Madison B.

Ambiance: A small Bakery with limited seating where you can look and see inside them baking as you order. Wait time: Extremely long wait time ranging from 30 minutes to an hour with food selling out very quickly leaving limited options and quantities. Service: Staff was friendly and seemed happy to take orders without being overwhelmed by the sheer number of people waiting. Food: The pain au Chocolate was rather small for the price they were charging. The chocolate filling was good and flaky, but I really was expecting bigger. The chocolate sourdough cake was very flavorful despite again being smaller for the price point set. Cold Brew was extremely underwhelming and something I wouldn't recommend. Not sure if I would go back and try it again immediately considering how limited the stock was and the wait time.

Loved the Passionfruit tart! Bread was also amazing even though they source from elsewhere. Line moves very fast.

Due to scheduling, I wasn't able to arrive until an hour before closing on a Friday which meant many of the items were sold out. When I arrived, there was a line so I had my buddy drop me off while he found parking. In retrospect, I should have had him drive around the block a few times as the line moved fast and there wasn't much to choose from. Since we both didn't know how quick the transaction would be, he figured out the metered parking, which was a feat in and of itself, and when he was walking over to the bakery, I was done with pastries in hand. Only one customer is allowed in the narrow shop at a time while the other customers queue up waiting to be signaled to step forward. As for seating, there is none so no one hangs around. Of the croissants remaining, I ordered all of them: Chocolate Almond Croissant - full of almond paste and chocolate, you could share this one, but why? This was my favorite. Almond Croissant - very good Kouign-amann - good sized While you can't enjoy the warm croissants with coffee at the shop, my buddy and I tucked in as soon as we got into the car. Good thing we carry a vacuum to clean up all the crumbs.

The pastries are absolutely tasty and made with passion and creativity of an extremely talented team, but please be respectful of the locals too who live around in the area. No matter what flavor the croissant is, it is consistently flaky and buttery. The classic pistachio cardamom sugar croissant is one of my favorite sweet items. Its not too sweet and the flavors are prominent. The rice roll was my favorite monthly flavor for september. The bun was pillowy and soft with meat, scallions and cilantro scattered throughout. The staff is always friendly and welcoming. There is a max 10 pastries, 3 of each pastries limit for each party. They're also able to separate pastries into different boxes if requested when ordering.

Heard about this place and I'm so glad it was open today! Usually there's only one item for sale…read moreon any given day, and the menu item for today was Moon Cake. I hadn't had a traditional one yet this year, so that was a plus for me. Normally I'm not crazy about the nut moon cakes, but this one was terrific! It was the best moon cake I've had in a while - regular lotus seed with yolk and nuts. The lady at the bakery reminded me of an "auntie" and she was super friendly! Even though today was moon cake, I took a chance and asked if she had any wife cake (Low Po Behng). Unfortunately she didn't, but we had a nice little conversation in Cantonese and it brought me back to childhood and Chinatown in L.A. back in the day. Some people might not like that it's closed (I think that's when she runs out or isn't baking that day) but that's just how it goes. It's nothing personal if someone drives a long way and it's closed. It sounds like sometimes the lines can be long (There was no line for us today - score!) but it's everyone's choice if they're willing to wait or not. It's a little place and you order through the door. To me, that just adds to the quirky adventure of it all. Next time I hope she has Low Po Behng!
