I haven't been here in years so it was nice to go back and find the service as amazing as ever. Our server was personable, attentive, and overall just great. The food was good and the prices aren't terrible. The menu has so many yummy choices it's hard to settle on what to get. I'd definitely go back, however, My one complaint is that it smelled like cigarette smoke when we first walked in. Obviously there isn't a smoking section in the restaurant but I'm not sure if there is an area where employees smoke downstairs and it was coming up or what the reason was but it was over powering. I smelled it as soon as I walked in and one of the people I was with who isn't from here said "oh, I didn't realize you can smoke in restaurants here" as the smell was quite noticeable. read more

I love Sofias. The food is always delightful, very delicious, never over spiced or under spiced. My favorites have been their spinach ravioli and mussels in white wine sauce. Sofia's is a bit upscale with linen table cloths but not pretentious. The dinning aria is quiet, well appointed, and tastefully decorated with an Italian theme. The front of the building is made of folding glass doors that offer a great view of 3rd Ave. In Summer the folding glass doors are opened and the dining aria leaks onto the sidewalk much like one would expect in Italy. The Wait staff is uniformly attired well groomed and attentive. In keeping with the Italian theme the wait staff can converse with you in Italian if you feel so inclined. Parking isn't a problem because valet service is available. I've enjoyed excellent meals at Sofia's wearing sneakers, blue jeans, and a flannel shirt. While Sofia's is gracious enough to permit almost any attire I recommend one dress up a little as a courtesy to other patrons. If you would like an Italian dish you don't see on the menu ask. It is very possible they can make it for you. I'm fond of Sofia's thin sliced, breaded veil cutlet, garnished with spinach leaf salad that is a crispy delight. Cooked at a high enough temperature to make the breading crispy, and cooked quickly enough to keep the veal moist and tender. Sofia's is a great dinning experience at a reasonable price. I brought my wife and met a few of her friends there last night for her birthday. Which was a surprise for her. The staff did a good job in keeping it a surprise. It was a good experience. The service was good. He was a friendly guy. I could tell he was a little bit of a ball buster, but he held back with us. Which is a good thing. He was attentive without being overbearing. The meals were also good, we got a great table. The staff was very helpful all the way around. We all had a couple of drinks. Which came out promptly. I got one of the specials. I was going to go with the Linguine Vongole, but changed my mind and when with Linguine in lobster sauce special. It was ok, I regret not getting the Vongole. My wife also got a chicken special, which was also ok. We were not raving about our dinners, a little bland. But the others at the table all really liked their dinners. The Penne with Vodka sauce was said to be very tasty. He even wiped the bowl clean with bread at the end. The veal with prosciutto was very good. I had a bite of that. It was delicious. And the other woman at our table really enjoyed her steak. It came with a large side of gravy, which looked pretty good. We had some bruschetta for an appetizer, it was very good. One glass of wine had quite a bit of sediment in it, but my wife said it tasted fine, so she didn't want to make a fuss. The staff was great, food a little bland (my wife's and mine was anyway), but good. The place has a very comfortable and warm atmosphere. Lots of the local Italian Bay Ridge clientele at the bar. Another big table next to us of people speaking Italian. (which was also a birthday party) It was an enjoyable time. A few of the staff came out with a piece of chocolate mousse with a candle and sang my wife happy birthday. Very nice. Great chocolate mousse too. We had an excellent time with my wife's friends. Chadwick's was booked so we wanted to try something new for a birthday celebration. Franco, the waiter, was the best part of our meal (although we were overcharged $10). The place was nice enough but the food! I think our bloody Mary was without vodka. Bland. Bland is the word for their tomato sauce or should I say, tomato soup. We recently held my grandmothers party here, we rented out the back room and everyone was thoroughly impressed with the entire experience. We were a party of 50, and had a 5 course meal not including dessert. The antipasti plate was delicious, then the seafood Platter was delicious containing shrimp , squid, clams and oyster. We then were served a pasta dish of our choosing, I had penne vodka, and a salad after that. For our entree we had several choices, I had the salmon and it was beautifully cooked and came in a timely manner. We had a cake brought in from outside and they served it for us without charging an additional Fee for cake cutting. The service really made the party exceptional. They were so attentive with refilling drinks and removing played and keeping up with the time constraints. Definitely my favorite Italian restaurant in Bayridge. read more

My girlfriend and I came here for dinner and the host Franco said that the place will close at 8pm. We would be seated immediately but needed to order and eat quickly to be out at 8 sharp. The host was very unfriendly and rushed us with ordering, though he seemed very friendly with other patrons and potential customers walking by. We overheard one patron ask if he had time for another bottle, and there was no problem. He also pulled out tables for other patrons coming in, with no questions asked and no mention of their closing at 8 pm. When I went inside to pay my bill, I spoke to Franco thoroughly about how I was unsatisfied with our service and about being rushed, and his response was indifferent and told me that his boss told him to keep bringing tables out, which we were not told. "I don't call the shots. The owner does." was his response to me. Food was delicious, but our service SUCKED. I would not recommend this place to anyone, due to service. That is not a way to conduct business, especially considering it was their first night opened after 4 months due to COVID-19. read more

My husband and I decided we would go to have lunch here because we were wanting to try someplace new. I got on yelp and looked for Italian food and came across Sophia's because of the high reviews. We walked in, stood and waited for someone to seat us (which we were never even greeted) and from the moment we walked in the door we smelled this terrible smell like a dirty veterinarians office or a dog pound. I couldn't imagine sitting in that and trying to eat my food and I sure don't want to guess what made the restaurant smell like that. We ended up walking out and going down to Giacomo's. The food here is really bad, and the service can be worse depending upon what waiter you get. I've eaten here three or four times, and I honestly can't say that I had a dish that didn't have something wrong with it. The salads are soggy, the soup mushy, and the cuisine is inauthentic and has a pre-packaged feel. The ambiance is okay... so if you're only looking to get a glass of wine or a beer, maybe some desert, than go for it. Definitely DON'T order anything that requires cooking panache, like friend goat cheese or gnocchi. On one visit when the waiter served the soup, and another guest in my party complained that she didn't like it, his response was that her soup was better than mine. Needless to say, after everyone around the table tasted it, we all agreed it should be sent back. The salad that I got instead was almost, but not quite, worse. read more

Our favorite neighborhood restaurant also happens to be one of the best Italian places around!! Sofia's tortellini is so good in creamy sauce and the veal is always savory perfection. Even the house salad is tasty with beets and tangy dressing. The waiters are friendly and attentive. The only item I've had and didn't like was the pasta fagouli which I picked up one day when I was under the weather. It was over porked?? Had very little past and only kidney beans. We continue to love this place. How many places in Brooklyn can you go and feel like home? The food is good and the service is excellent. This is our go to spot for birthdays, holidays and basically any day that ends in Y. Franco treats our family like royalty and makes it so fun each and every time. The appetizers are yummy especially the hot and cold antipasta is yummy and my 6 year old daughter loves the calamari. I'd recommend just asking Franco what to order and going with what ever he suggests. The staff at Sofias really care about their customers--just trust me and go. read more

Before I write anything else, let me preface that this is the first review I have ever submitted on Yelp. I use this site often to check out new restaurants, but never had the need to review one--UNTIL NOW. I am not sure what restaurant some of these other reviewers are describing, but it is not even remotely close to the experience we had. My family and I just visited this restaurant on June 17th, 2013 for my twin nieces 14th birthday. We were eight people altogether, though my nieces had no food except to share a tartufo. I will itemize all the things that went wrong: 1) There were only TWO other occupied tables in the restaurant besides ours. There were two waiters and a busboy working that night. We had to literally go search for these "workers" to: A) Place our orders, B) clear the table after each course, C) get refills on water, bread, etc. They would simply not come to the table and when they did come to take orders, they took for half the table and disappeared. After THREE HOURS of mostly waiting, I finally had to look for the waiter and gave him my credit card before we even got the check because we wanted to get out of there. He proceeded to spend the next 10 minutes outside the restaurant and I had to look for him again to get the bill and my credit card back. 2) All of this would have been acceptable if the food was good. Forget about it! Several of us ordered the Cold Antipasto, which was the worst I have ever seen. There were fried beans in it, (??), and one skimpy piece of mozzarella and mortadela. It was pretty bad. My mom has the Eggplant Parmigiana everywhere we go and she said this was by far the worst she had because it was tasteless. My sister-in-law ordered the $32 lamb chops and said they were fatty and tasteless. I ordered the seafood combination, thinking I was getting shrimp, clams, mussels and calamari, (and I did get one of each), but 70% of what I received was a fish I am not even able to identify, and did not like at all. All in all, it was the worst food we ever had in Brooklyn. 3) On top of the VERY bad service and the VERY disappointing food, the worst part of it were the unbelievably rediculous prices! First of all, we checked out the menu on the website before we went there but when we received the menus at the restaurant, the prices for almost every single item were $7 more. That should have given it away right there! When it came down to the desserts they were not on the menu. I thought it was very strange that they would have a big selection of desserts and yet not have that or the coffee on the menu so we could see the prices. We probably should have asked what the prices were, but who knew they would all be double digits? We also did not think to ask about the cost of a glass of wine or a beer because this is pretty much the same everywhere. But unless any of you want to spend $15 on a glass of wine, I would stay far away from this place!! All in all, when we FINALLY got the bill, (which, by the way, did NOT itemize all of the items we ordered, so it was near impossible to figure out what we were charged for each item), the bill came to $480, and considering only six people were eating and there were only 2 glasses of wine and 2 bottles of beer, $80 a person is outright robbery! What contributed to this really expensive bill is the fact that they automatically included a 20% gratuity!!! I know we were eight people, but, as I said, only six were ordering. The whole point of a tip is to reward good service and reserve the right to tip less for bad service, which I was prepared to do. But now I know why they never bothered to come over to our table all night--because they already knew they were getting a 20% tip from us--the last ripoff of the night! I am still fuming about this whole experience. I have never seen such a bad combination of food, service and price in my life, and I hope this review will save others from experiencing the nightmare that we had there! read more

This place is a poor excuse for an Italian resteraunt. Had to send back the tuna tartar because it was obviously spoiled, Sent back 2 bottles of wine that were spoiled before getting a decent bottle. Giving this place two stars is actually a generous rating for the experience I had at this restaurant. The two stars are for the decor, certainly not the food or service. Although my friends said some of the food tasted okay (mine was awful), we all agreed that the quality of all the food did not match the high prices. I met my 3 friends here and started the night with a busboy who didn't speak or understand English well enough to understand anything we requested. Our waiter also had a very thick accent which made it very difficult to understand him especially over the extremely loud music blasting through the speakers. We tried to ignore the loud music and simply attributed the barrier in our English-Italian exchanges to the charm of an Italian restaurant despite how annoying it was at times. When we received our food we discovered the meat dishes came with only the meat on the dish (mine was salmon so completely smothered and swimming in a lake of dark gravy that the fish was not seen at all in any way). The vegetables and roast potatoes that were ordered with my salmon meal were put on a separate plate and placed in the middle of the table. When I reached for the plate I was stopped by our waiter who informed me that the plate of food was meant for all 4 people to share even though there was only enough veggies and potatoes for 2 people. The other bizarre part of this situation was that 2 of my friends ordered pasta dishes that don't usually get served with any side dishes. Once I started to eat my salmon I discovered why it was smothered in a gravy that would usually be served with red meat. The gravy was a thick dark brown sauce with a very overpowering awful flavor certainly not meant for fish. It was used because the salmon was not fresh. The fish felt mushy as I bit into it. I tried to smell and examine the fish for freshness but there was so much gravy that it quickly poured over the rest of the fish every time I parted a piece off with my fork. But the lighting in the place was so dark I probably wouldn't have been able to see much of the fish anyway. The pungent smell of the gravy completely covered any fishy smell. I didn't send the food back for fear of what might be done to the newly ordered food. When it was time to order the dessert, there were no menus offered. Instead the waiter told us he can recite the list to us which was a list long enough that we all wondered why they didn't have a menu for the desserts. But of course he didn't mention any prices for the desserts. When we received the bill, nothing was itemized even though the waiter understood we were all paying for our own food. It took us quite some time to decipher the waiters awful handwriting and ask him specifically what every item cost because he grouped several items together making it difficult to know what separate items cost. The only good things about this place were the Tiramisu, the Cannolis and leaving this restaurant. read more

I recently ate AT this place and the greeter was not giving any warm greetings. When we sat AT the table and the waiter took our order i requested for two vegtables and my shrimps, when he came he brang me One of the wrong vegtables. When i called the waiter to change the vegtable for me he said ok and didnt take the One i didnt went back to the kitchen and then after 5 minutes he brought me the vegtables i requested but what type of waiter leaves the vegtables i cant eat on the table. IT was 10 AT night already. I had to move the vegtables i couldnt eat off my own plate not happy with my time there and after i ate the food the vegtables were not welll cooked. Anyways after i came Home by 2 am the same day i started getting cramps and vommitting. That day i ended up in the hospital for two days, missed two days of work for not being able to work AT all being in the hospital. Im writing this so people know that when restaurants are Busy they tend to just give any Service with out care. Where was the manager to approve everything being put out ?! Just be careful when you order at places and watch out for the quality of your food, so food poising doesnt happen to you . Very disappointed! We had reservations at 4 today, when we got there only 2 tables were occupied. They offered us a table by the door which was for 4 when we asked for another table they said all of the rest were reserved. Finally they gave us a corner table for 3 and once we sat down they said we couldn't sit there either. Made us feel like since we weren't a regular we weren't welcome.
