Wait, how did I never review this? During its prime (which I'm not even sure when that would have been now that I think about it), Smokey Bones in Wyomissing, while perhaps never THE destination, certainly was A destination. That destination was perfect for families wanting perfectly acceptable casual suburban chain-quality BBQ. It was mass produced, sauces and soups came in plastic sacks, the cattle used here weren't the GMO-free type that your granny used to eat. These are the animals juiced to the max, barely able to support their own weight, but man, what succulent ribs they have. We didn't know it at the time, but COVID was perhaps the golden age of take out ordering. Restaurants were practically giving food away, trying to get some return on the food rotting away in their pantries. Smokey Bones had some insane wing deals, like BOGO deals that fed me for a week, easy. One order I found confirmed in an old email from 2020 shows 32 bone-in wings and 32 boneless wings for $40. I mean hot damn. I like the rest of America at the time was living like a fat, gluttonous slob. Remember ordering bottles of liquor to your house back then? And you would just be signing for it in like a bathrobe. Good times. Darn shame to see this one go, not because I went regularly or because the food was particularly good, or because the service was exceptional or anything, and certainly not for the decor or music selection, wait, what was the question again? Ah right, it's a shame to see it go because it was a microcosm, it was home to people who worked there 5, 10+ years or more. There was lore. There were l, pranks, jokes, cruelty, but lifelong friendships, and even love no doubt. Also conniving backstabbing. And countless numbers of mundane, unremarkable shifts. All added up, though, it's one I'm sure all the employees can look back on and say, "That was an experience." RIP Smokey Bones and to the hopes and dreams of the entire staff that were crushed on April 28, 2026 when the doors were closed and remain closed to this day. Personally I'm hoping for a P. F. Chang's to move in, but I may be slightly biased. read more

I ordered a half rack of their signature ribs and let me tell you! The meat was so tender and juicy. I was able to pull it clean off the bone with a fork - no fingers required. This came with 2 sides of your choosing. The fire roasted corn was ok. Pretty bland and tasted like something from a freezer bag. But the corn bread. Soft, moist, and came with a honey almond butter. It was like desert. The service was pretty slow for a Saturday afternoon with only about a quarter of the restaurant full. OK, where do I begin the barbecue here is not that great. I order a platter with some beans some pulled pork and a sausage. I will tell you this the pulled pork was dried. Super dried. Have always liked Smokey Bones and this was my first time to the Reading location. So good. Friendly staff, place had strong BBQ smell and the food was perfectly prepared. Good ribs with chicken and sides of coleslaw & baked potato. Took less than 15 minutes from time of placing order to receiving the meal. Extra sauces on table for ribs and chicken & really like the selection. Nothing went to waste as the food tasted good. -We came through on a Saturday afternoon, about 3pm. It was the opposite of crowded- we were immediately seated, though it was odd that with the abundance of empty tables, even by section, we were placed right next to other full tables, making it a little awkward. When I first went in, I used the restroom where 2 of the toilets were clogged. After I used the toilet, i washed my hands and saw someone walk by me without washing and when I followed them out, they walked straight into the kitchens. Yes-an employee. My husband and I wanted something that wasn't fried fast food, and this was definitely better than choosing a mcdonald's or burger king. We ordered the pork belly sticks and the shareable plate. Everything was good. I enjoyed it all without the extra sauces, and my husband sampled the sauces, determining his favorites per meat. I also had a well made margarita (no complaints there!). Where to start...first and last time I will eat at a Smokey Bones. Waiting area was full when we arrived a little after 5p.m. Figured we'd have to wait a bit. Layout is open and loud -- like cafeteria loud with louder music blaring. Not sensory friendly if that's what you need. On to the food.... 45 minutes later we were seated. Our waitress was great, prompt, very attentive and quick with the refills. I got the rib feast - ribs with 2 sides, garlic toast and drink for $20. It said " house rack". A bit more than a 1/2 rack but just shy of a full rack. Sides were mashed with gravy and mac n cheese. See pic below. 1/2 cup of mashed with canned gravy. But the best is the mac n cheese. It's listed as a premium side for $4.99 extra. Please. Save. Your. Money. It was cooked literally plain cooked pasta with melted cheese over top. No sauce or anything. The ribs were ok. Very fatty and the sauce was just meh. The garlic "toast" was soggy bread wishing to be garlic and toast. Hubs got the pulled pork with fries and baked beans and 2 slices garlic toast. Was about $17. Healthy portion of pork and fries. Pork had no bones but a lot of extra fat. Fries were ok. No extra seasoning. He said they weren't bad but nothing special. Overall it was meh - it was a meal. Went to Smokey Bones with my mom to dine for her birthday. The food was super delicious. I got the rib special for $19.99 that came with ribs and two sides. I chose baked beans and a baked potato and it came with a slice of garlic bread yum. My strawberry lemonade was on point. My mom got salmon with broccoli and potato wedges and she was satisfied. The only thing that we weren't satisfied with was the piña colada that I asked them to make for my mom. The piña colada was not on the menu, but our server said that the bartender could make it. Upon arrival, I could tell just from appearance the piña colada was not going to be good. My mom is not one to complain so she waited until two days later to tell me that she really didn't like the piña colada. When the piña colada arrived to the table, it was already starting to break apart, and it was garnished with a lime, which kind of threw me off, because typically piña colada's are garnished with pineapple and cherry. I appreciate the effort, but for what was delivered to the table I would've much rather them say they can't make it. Other than that the service was pretty good. I also ordered some wings to go, traveled an hour with them and they were still in good condition. The wings had the right amount of sauce cooked to the right texture, super satisfied.
