Solid 4 stars. Not outstanding but definitely solid enough bars and good atmosphere. Trivia night is a lotta fun

Stopped in while on a work trip, ordered the Philly cheese steak egg rolls with a sweet n sour sauce appetizer, they had great flavor and the sauce went with it perfectly. For beer I had the Mexican laugher and black lager, both very tasty. I love the vibe of the brewery being an old fire house. The staff were friendly and made you feel like a regular. When your in the area, definitely stop in for a visit! read more

Super easy to spot and plenty of street parking in front. If they had a small lot, we didn't take advantage. Very friendly young woman at the counter to take care of us. Community tables only, plenty of board games and a Donkey Kong for 25 cents. Old Skool. Opted for a flight since this was my first visit. Two IPA, and two stouts for me. Reasonably priced at $8 for 4 tasters. Always expect to pay a bit more per ounce with samplers, but $8 perfect. Really enjoyed the IPA and regular stout. Kiddo had the pretzel twist that came with a generous portion of beer cheese and two small cups of mustards ($6). My wife had their standard grilled cheese ($10 with the soup) and I thought the Tomate del Sol sounded amazing. Despite the description of a house made pesto, not sure what I received. Don't get me wrong, it was delicious and the $2 substitute of the tomato bisque was fantastic, but this was nothing like any pesto I have ever known. More like stewed chopped tomatoes. Bread was killer! Not too greasy and perfectly grilled. Will surely return to try more of these sandwiches in the near future. I regret not grabbing a growler of that X50 to drink at home. Thanks to Doug at Hidden River for reminding me about Oakbrook! read more

Oh. My. Goodness! I've been following this place for a while on Facebook but just tried it this past weekend when they were offering a pizza version of their Great Googley Moogley where you could pick it up and heat at home. My husband loves specialty pizzas, I don't. But it was getting really good reviews and was only $10 for a 12in so I said, "what the heck." They were also offering beer to go so we figured we'd try some. 10 minutes after heating (we love pizza with a bit of crunch) our pizza was ready. We deVOURED all of it. The two of us, by ourselves lol. It was so delicious. I don't even like bleu cheese but I tore it up. It also had fig jam on it (like whaaaaat!!?) Wasn't overwhelming at all and left us wanting more... like a whole other pizza! lol... too bad they were sold out the next day. That's the only thing that stopped us. We also tried the blood orange ale since the peach was sold out. I wasn't a fan but my husband enjoyed it. They have a one-time $5 fee for the goblets so make sure to return them for more! We will be back! Can't wait to see what next week has to offer. read more

Oakbrook Brewing is an unassuming, humble operation in an old firehouse, situated on a quiet street in a residential neighborhood of Reading. If you blinked, you might miss it. I questioned my GPS directions, because it's kind of it's own stand alone spot, next to homes and a small Bimbo operation (the bread company). There was plentiful street parking, and while I'm not sure it's a very monitored area, pay mind to the painted curbs. When I first heard of Oakbrook, I imagined a chic, super hipster, maybe even slightly pretentious vibe. I could not have been more wrong. Long wooden tables and a plethora of outdoor tables make this a popular spot for locals. It's a very laid-back operation with a variety of beers and seltzers on tap, and some fancy grilled cheese sandwiches on the menu - perfect for kids, adults, vegetarians, and meat eaters. Sandwiches are made to order, full or half, and come with crunchy delicious potato chips. The beer far exceeded my expectations. Between my boyfriend and I, we tasted the Tainted Luv - Mango Sour, Oakbrook IPA, Cookie Crumble Stout, and the Joe & Dan's Black and Tan. The Tainted Luv was incredibly thirst quenching, and the Oakbrook IPA rivals my other favorite Blood Orange IPA from a bigger local brewery. The IPA was bursting with orange flavor, and it made me wish they sold it in bottles or cans. The Cookie Crumble Stout, one of their flagship beers, had a punch of sweetness but not enough to overpower the beer, making it a tasty stout (and perfect in the 8 oz. pour I requested). The most bizarre aspect of our visit was undoubtedly the cheerful, solo bartender/ cook. She was among the most chipper service workers I've ever encountered, and yet she was running the entire place by herself. How she managed to sling out numerous sandwiches and beer orders while staying sane was beyond me, but she deserved every penny of the extra tip we gave. I can't believe she was working completely alone - but she crushed it! I love visiting places like Oakbrook. Simple menus, delicious products, good people. What more can you ask for? read more

Sure, we've all hung out in a dark and dingy fire company before. But what about a beautifully restored, turn-of-the-19th-century fire station? This unique setting lies home to Oakbrook Brewing Company, which first opened its doors in March of 2016. And to think, at one time, the surrounding neighborhood didn't want Oakbrook Brewing Co. on the premises. When owner Kyle Neuheimer submitted his initial offer to buy the property, a nearby business filed a zoning appeal, claiming the pub would attract "undesirables." The case went all the way to the state Supreme Court, which, thankfully, denied it in 2014. These events paved the way for Oakbrook to become Reading's first brewery since Canal Street Pub and Restaurant closed its brewing operations circa 2010. If you're familiar with German beer halls, you'll feel right at home. The seating arrangements here are of the long, wooden variety - think extended picnic tables. So during your next visit, you may be sharing it with another group - and that might have been the intention. "We're kind of pushing that community feel," the owner stated in a local article published around the time it opened. "We want people to sit down and have conversations over great beer." The menu consists of appetizers of the finger food variety and entrees of the sandwich variety. Now that I think of it, the only thing you'll need an eating utensil for is the chili and the soup du jour. Literally everything else is eaten caveman style. Just pick it up, and shove it in your mouth. If you loved smoked meats, you're in luck. Some standouts include the pulled pork, kielbasa, Italian sausage, and sliced tavern ham. These are the primary components of Oakbrook's signature sandwiches, such as the Cubano, Polish Boy, and various pananis. There's a real sense of community here. When I first drove up during my first trip, I was surprised how situated it was in the surrounding suburban neighborhood. As you make your approach, it looks like just another house on Park Avenue. But as you get closer, you can tell this is no ordinary brew pub. The owners made a concerted effort to not dangle distracting TVs all around. In fact, there are no TVs on the premises. Only delicious locally brewed craft beers, comfort food, and good company. read more

Okay so I love this place. And I hate myself for taking seven years (yes that's an exaggeration) to write this review. But after two visits, I feel pretty confident in my overall impressions. It's a brewery. So that should play a heavy hand in stars here, except this is the main reason I'm docking them. Their beers aren't terrible, but I have just never had anything outstanding. Their NE's are eh, pretty basic, but I am not a fan at all of their Blood Orange IPA (I don't like West Coast IPAs though so I can't judge too harshly). Their stouts are decent, and I actually enjoyed their smokier Red Ale, but overall, they're just eh considering all of the other options in the area. Cheese doe. They do cheese right. In between bread. With customized toppings. I'm not really sure how, but fig jam and kielbasa work. Don't believe me? Take me on a date, I'll design your meal ;) Howeverrrr, where did the other sandwiches go? Compared to the first time and this past time I visited there are much less sandwiches, I was pretty upset the cheesy, mushroom forest disappeared (No that wasn't the name). Anyways. Still yummy, but the first time was surely better. Ambiance is where I fall for this place. I love love love the open space and huge picnic tables. I'm all about making friends while drinking beer, and this place doesn't disappoint. Especially with the shelves of board games! They also have weekly women's bike rides. Someone stand up and clap, cause I look weird doing this on my own right now. Okay I'm done. Go get some queso and brewios. Or better yet, who wants to make plans to go back? It's always a good time for happy hour. read more

This is an awesome brewery! If you are looking for your cookie cutter, big "name" brewery and expect that type of atmosphere you will be disappointed as Oakbrook has that small town feel that is just comfortable. No bells and whistles, no frills, no fancy stuff just good beer and decent eats. The brewery is located in an old Firehouse..i mean really how cool is that!!! Its a pretty residential area so I was a little worried we were in the wrong spot its on a quiet back street. It had that awesome old time feel when little firehouses were in every community. While its small inside (only allowed less that 50 people) that's what gives this place its charm. Music is played through the speakers, you sit at long tables with other beer lovers and get to know them, bond over beers and food and maybe even play some games that are provided. There are no tv's and as I looked around most people were not on their phones. They were deep in conversations and talking to each other (which seems like a lost art these days)! I know my fiance and I had a great time playing trivial persuit while drinking some brews. We stopped here on a beer day trip and it was by far my favorite of the day. We entered and went straight to the bar. The tap list is impressive and has a good range of beer variety. While we were disappointed they didnt do flights they did inform us that we could try anything we wanted. Staff was patient, friendly and courteous. The beers that we tried and ended up drinking were delicious. I like that they offer 10 oz pours as well since they dont do flights this is a great option. They are also able to fill growlers (although I didnt see any of their own there so bring one from home!) We ordered some food, a pepperoni pizza panini and a polish girl I believe it was called that had jalapenos, kielbalsa, mustard and cheese. I loved the sandwiches! They were grilled to perfection and buttery. They came with a side of chips and slaw too! I actually want to go back for them! :) I saw other patrons order nachos which were huge and can easily be shared between a few people. STaff asked us if we liked our food which was nice. Overall come for the ambiance, the cool experience, great brews and a fun time with friends and family. We will be back! read more

Awesome place! Extremely friendly staff. Food was good. And the beer was very good! Will be back!

Places with spirits in Berks County *never* have anything good for vegans, but this new brewery in a refurbished firehouse does -- and will be getting more! What a delight. We stopped in to taste their beer and to try the vegan kielbasa sandwich (with cole slaw and Dieffenbach's potato chips). My spouse was very excited about his sandwich, with liberal sauteed peppers and onions, and I stole the cole slaw, which I could eat a quart of. The Bell Alley pretzels seem vegan too, and you can pick your mustard. Meat dishes come from the local Muddy's BBQ. Good use of local stuff. However, the influence of the Pacific Northwest is very clear in the brewing profile (thank God). Beer comes in 2 portion sizes, 10 oz for $3.50 and 20 oz for $5.50 The smaller size is good for tasting IPAs since they are stronger, and you can try more than one when it is not a huge pint commitment. I saw plenty of people with flights of four 5 oz glasses, another excellent option. Reading Draft bottles of soda are also available, The Venerable Parrot IPA (named for the former mascot of the station) is fermented over grapefruit puree and served with a sprig of rosemary. This was so wonderful on a warm summer evening. I also sampled the more delicate Gearmasher, described as drier with spicy floral notes of Amarillo hops. There were 2 more IPAs and also a pale ale, smoky malted ale, a citrus wheat, and a brown ale. They list abv, IBU, and even SRM: Standard Reference Measure which describes color. Don't ask for a Yuengling or Miller Lite here, even though the ambiance is in no way snobby. Every time I go by, the main garage door is open, and you can see people relaxing on the large picnic tables which are community seating, though it is not hard to find a spot to enjoy with your group or sweetie. There are a few tables outside, and I hope there will be more. You would not expect to find a brewery in this area, and it is wonderful to see a building re-used as something where community members can gather. I thought it would be all Alvernia students, but the crowd was mixed in age. Check out the neat firehouse memorabilia on the walls. Amazingly, they are open every day except Groundhog Day, until 11pm except Sunday. I knew some of the staff but all were sweet, enthusiastic, and knowledgeable. And I love their olive logo shirts. All my vegan and/or beer-loving friends will be ushered in and soon. read more

Of all the local breweries that have cropped up in the Reading area in the last few years, I think I'm most impressed with Oakbrook Brewing. From the consistency of their brand to their involvement in the community, from their beer hall digs to their food offerings, Oakbrook is really doing it well and staying true to their identity and their community roots. The brewery is located in a former firehouse (circa 1905) and as such it's a pretty small but inviting space. There's street parking, and I believe they have a small lot behind the building. Seating is at long beer garden-style tables with benches, with the bar situated at the back. The walls are covered with vintage memorabilia related to the firehouse and Reading's history. There are card and board games available to take back to your seat, and a vintage Donkey Kong cabinet up near the bar. The place is very laid-back and family-friendly, particularly if you're there for an early dinner. Oakbrook also hosts different weekly and one-off activities like game nights (retro videogames, tabletop games), bike club events, seafood boils, etc. Oakbrook usually has around a dozen of their beers on tap, in a variety of styles from traditional to modern. I think they do everything pretty well, but for me their more traditional styles are better-executed; I really like their English Mild, for example, and they do a variety of stouts that are also very well done. Their IPAs are fine. Beers are available in 10oz and 16oz pours, and they also fill growlers and crowlers. The food at Oakbrook is a real stand-out. After doing some limited runs of a variety of specialty grilled cheese sandwiches this year and last, they've become a permanent part of the menu. There are some tasty premium and equally tasty standard options, and almost all of them have a vegetarian/vegan version available. The grilled cheese options are a little pricey ($10-14 range) and I feel like they occasionally skimp on some of the premium (meat!) ingredients, but overall I've been impressed and satisfied. They also have loaded nachos (also available vegan), kielbasa sandwiches, pretzel platters, etc. Occasionally they'll also have a limited offering of smoked wings with different glazes/sauces, which are available until they run out. Following them on social media is a must if you want to keep up with that sort of thing. If you live in the area and are looking for a cool hang-out spot or a casual date night, need a family dinner option that is a nice change of pace, or if you're visiting Berks County and want to get a good idea of what the local craft beer scene has to offer, Oakbrook is highly recommended. read more

Adapting my review from Facebook to Yelp, as well.... I've been to Oakbrook five times since they opened and I have consistently enjoyed the beer, the ambiance, the food, and the friendly staff. The beer is a refreshing break from the increasingly absurd and over-the-top beers that many microbrewers are putting out. The focus very much seems to be on making quality brews. The 1938 Special Brown Ale (5.7% abv and 23 IBU) is a personal favorite of mine, as well as the Smokey the Dog, an English Porter, (5.2% abv and 28 IBU). Rather than focusing on ridiculous and/or needlessly high abv or IBU, Oakbrook seems to concentrate instead on making beer that tastes incredible while still not lacking in experimentation. A lesson that I think they could teach to many other breweries! The old firehouse itself is, of course, a very unique environment. Spring and Summer will be extra nice because they open the large garage door and it gives the feeling of drinking outside while still having a roof over your head! When they have music on, it is pumped through vintage-looking speakers that hang from the ceiling, and has always been jazz, blues, or swing from the 20s-40s. An excellent match for the feel of the building! The food is a combination of BBQ-style options from Muddy's BBQ in Oley, and a few items made in house. My favorite has been the soft pretzels with house-made German sharp mustard! All of the staff I've had have been friendly, helpful, knowledgable, and attentive. The flights are more than reasonably priced and worth every cent and I recommend them so you can get as many of these delicious beers in you as fast as possible! Cheers! read more

So a fine brewing company - in an old firehouse. Great ambiance. Brews were good. They have food but we didn't have any.

Such a hidden gem! My boyfriend and I had 7 beers ( two flights) and three food items (veggie kielbasa, veggie chili and a smokehouse grilled cheese) and they were all delicious. So many vegetarian/ vegan options, too. A welcoming environment and friendly staff. One of our favorite micro brews. read more

Pretty cozy inside, we went straight to the counter to order beer. Server told us they don't do flights but we could sample whatever we liked, which was nice. We finally settled in with the beers we liked and ordered some food. They had a whole shelving unit of board games which was awesome! (we picked scrabble). Our food came out really quickly. We got a soft pretzel, a cuban, and a ham and cheese panini with chili. The food wasn't anything incredible but it was still pretty good. Chili is vegetarian and meatless so it's more like a vegetable soup with beans. Still, as far as a veggie soup goes it wasn't too shabby. All the staff was very nice and helpful when we asked for some paper to score keep scrabble with. Seems like a great place to bring friends and family together for a decently affordable night of fun! read more

I have been to the brewery twice before for 5K races but it is too busy post-race to go inside. I decided to go back and see what I am missing. FIrst, I am missing a lot of beer options. Their tap list is nearly 20 beers long but about half are unavailable. Tuned Up brewery in Spring City used to have the same issue of lack of capacity to keep a supply. Hopefully Oakbrook improves their capacity for brewing. There is a pretty good menu selection and I was happy with my nachos and most of the beers I tried. They do need to add TV's to the location. The brewery markets itself as a play to spend time with friends and make new friends but it would be nice to catch a football or baseball game. read more

Since my initial review of 3/2016 its due time that I update my review. Im not one to throw 5 star reviews around but Oakbrook deserves it. The beers are tasty and fresh. My favs are Malakai IPa ( did i spell that right?) and all stoudts, particularly cookie crumble. Ive tried a few.food items, nachos, kielbasa not too bad either, the vegan foods are a nice option. The setting is an old firehouse that is cozy and has long tables leaving room for conversation with old and new friends. Various board games to pass the time as well. Kyle, the owner is very personable, giving focus to commumity, LOVE THAT. Weather permitting they keep the roll up door open for fresh air and then movies are shown maybe once or twice a month on that roll up door once its closed. The servers are all attentive and pleasant regardless of how busy. read more

This is a really cool place. First of all it's in the old neighborhood firehouse, tucked away inside the neighborhood. The beer selection is one of the tastiest and most *innovative* I've ever seen - I had the second pint of pecan pale ale, which they warned me was experimental, but it was plenty tasty. And the crowd was a great assortment of relaxed cool people, multiple ages and demos, just a really great atmosphere. read more

Great neighborhood Brew Hall! Not the flashiest beer styles, but well executed, quality beers. Loved the Smoked Porter and can't wait for more experimental batches! I love places like this that are simple and local. The beer was good and so was the food - sausages and Bbq are quick and filling. Reasonably priced and nice turn over of patrons.
