This was from a visit from April 24,2019. I arrived before 5 pm and walked through the outside-bar into the hostess station area, in the dining room. I must have waited 3 to 5 minutes and no one even walked by. I proceeded to the counter to place and pay for my all you can eat chicken with sides and a soda. The employee told me to have a seat in the dining room and I bussed my own drink before I took a seat. After a few minutes, a server appeared out of nowhere and waited on a waiting table and a party of 3 waiting to be seated. The counter help dropped off my food. My chicken was most likely reheated that day but could have been originally cooked a day or two ago. It was acceptable after I applied a nice amount of some bar b que sauce. The sides were frozen, from a can, and spent time under a heat lamp or on a steam table. When I went back to re order, I was asked where is my server? I dint know what to say as I had this same issue about 5 years ago. I was finally served my re order and again the chicken needed bar b que sauce and the sides were tired..... But, then the server who was nowhere to be found, came over to make some small talk and ask if she could get me anything. I kept my composure and told her I was ok. I was surprised when they took it back and fresh fries were brought back so that was good. The patio is nice, except that it provides a beautiful view of 422. Given the name of the place, one expects pit-smoked BBQ. The menu also boasted a fair amount of Greek specialty dishes. As a lover of BBQ and harboring a decade of nostalgia for Greek/Cypriot cooking, I was ready for both of these things. The problem is... neither of those were true to their essence. The BBQ was BBQ in the same way pulled pork or ribs in the crock pot (see: Pinterest) are BBQ. Sweet, soft (mushy even), drenched in sauce but without any hint of bark or dry rub. The BBQ beans tasted like they were from a can, maybe with extra brown sugar. To the establishment's credit, however the three meats sampled (chicken quarter, baby back, pulled) tasted fresh - neither had the warmed-over flavor I've experienced in other Berks county BBQ places where the meat might've been pit-smoked some time beforehand. So at least on a Friday night, one can expect the meat to be on the fresh side. As representatives of the Mediterranean inspiration of the menu, we tried the gyro platter. Whereas I was expecting slices off a spit, we received what looked like homogeneous, fried or pan-fried, pre-shaped (and probably factory-made and frozen) slivers of meatloaf. Pleasant tasting, but again not what one expects from gyro. Perhaps we should have ordered souvlaki - maybe those would have been cooked on a souvla and not a griddle. Then again, the village bread was a slice of white bread with garlic butter (poor psomi), so I wouldn't hope too much. Of note, the baklava was clearly homemade and richly spiced (was there almond extract in there?), and the galaktoboureko was also quite pleasant. Those were the only two things I ate that gave me the impression that someone cared to serve more than food to soak up beer. The place was clearly buzzing with a lively Baby Boomer/Early X crowd who were having a good time getting together on the patio. The music was somewhat loud for a 6PM dinner crowd. Service was courteous but a bit confused: four different people waited on us but did not seem to coordinate their efforts or communicate, and this seemed to occur at other tables. This is likely atypical - a result of adapting to rapidly changing circumstances due to covid-19 and a recent patio reopening. Would I come here again? Definitely not for BBQ. Perhaps foolishly, I cling to the idea that a restaurant that has pastitsio and galaktobourekia on its menu can deliver an OK piece of lamb. Or fresh pita. read more

My girlfriend and I went to the Bar-B-Q Pit two Saturdays ago. It was the first time that I've been in years (and she had never been there.) I've only ever had what I consider to be the best deal on the menus: the all-you-can eat "Super Special" BBQ 1/4 chicken for $9.99. It comes with a single 16 oz. domestic draft beer (including a bunch of "Lite" beers and Yuengling Lager), all the soda you want and 2 sides. And you can change your side choices with each reorder. My girfriend had the same thing but she went with the "BBQ Bonanza" (basically the same thing that I outlined above, with the addition of country-style ribs. Sides include coleslaw, applesauce, pasta salad, rice pilaf, baked beans, corn (not on the cob), garlic mashed potatoes (with brown gravy if you'd like), baked potato or fries. I'm sure that all of the sides are from a can or frozen (like the fries), but it's hard to argue with the price. It's not fancy, but their patio is nice for eating outside in the summertime. I got two 1/4 chickens (thigh & drumstick) with my initial order. Reorders were single 1/4 chicken with my sides. My girlfriend was served a single 1/4 chicken with two ribs and her sides initially. When you consider that a 1/2 chicken with two sides is $7.99 and it doesn't include the beer or soda (plus it's only two sides and that's it), it's easy to see the value of the all-you-can eat. My girlfriend said that she'd like to go back, but she would just get the $9.99 Super Special like I did... Bar-B-Q Pit is a staple in my family. We frequent here often for several reasons. First it's a very welcoming atmosphere. This place is perfect for a family dinner with children or a date night with your spouse. The food is very affordable. My 7 year old daughter loves the bbq chicken and mashed potatoes and it's only $3.29 I've never saw such a deal. They also have a freezer chest filled with ice cream the kids really love that. Our group visited for the first time this week and had an average experience. Our server was very nice, and all the girls seemed to work together to make sure we got our food and drinks quickly. All of our cocktails were good, but the Summer Shandy on draft seemed a bit flat. A few of us got the crab soup and didn't really like the taste, but the Mediterranean sampler and fried pickles were good. No complaints about the Gyros, or the Burger, but we did not like the Pulled pork sandwich because it was entirely too saucy and seemed like store bought pre-made Bbq. Fries were delicious! This was one of the worst experiences I've had a a restaurant in a long time. Once we finally ordered we waited for our drinks to arrive, beer and lemonade, can't mess that up. Then the salads came but before the person left not our waitress I had to ask for forks to eat the salad. Some time goes by and our (best in town prime rib show up). The waitress also did not bring this item either, we had to ask for a knife to cut the steaks; even though the person who gave us forks for our salad must not of thought we need anything else. During the unbelievable service nightmare the waitress that took our order never came back to the table. We finally stopped someone and asked to see the manager about our service. This was after waiting for anyone to stop by the table to see if we needed anything else like a drink refill. There was a large group from a local school there which was no problem. But it must have been for them tonight. The manager did take a percentage off the bill, which is not what I wanted at all. I would never patronise this place ever again. The corn was watery and the garlic mashed potatoes (a favorite of mine) were disgusting. They tasted to me like they used garlic from a jar and about 3x too much of it. The baked beans were OK, and the fries were not bad. The chicken was basically grilled over a fire in advance, so it was on the dry side, then slathered in a terrible BBQ sauce. I had one of their gyros on another visit, and honestly it was the best thing I had there. It was pretty good, though the meat was very dry again. We waited over 20 min in the drive through when we were the only car. I ordered a cheesesteak with fries and my wife ordered pulled pork sandwich with fries. Even making everything fresh (which it wasn't) shouldn't have taken that long. The ribs were steamed, not smoked, then dunked in a commercial barbecue sauce which was the only thing that gave the meat any flavor. The chicken was baked, and dunked in the same sauce. For one I have never been to place that considers itself a "barbeque pit" that didn't offer a selection of bbq sauces to add to your food. I have been driving past this place every week for about 2 years going to work and always wanted to try it out. With a souvlaki platter special on the sign for the drive-thru I decided to give it a try. That's right a drive-thru at a dinner! How convenient. Ordered the platter and took it home for dinner. It was very tasty. The pork was tender and seasoned well. Next time I will ask for the tzatziki sauce on the side( they put a little too much on). The pulled pork is meh - the meat does not taste smoked at all, and the sauce is nothing special (Open Pit?). The ribs are not smoked either.
