The positive: This place is clean and well run from what I saw and experienced. The bathrooms were clean. The workers were friendly. The food: large 1/2 chicken platter with potato filling (mashed taters), and the salad bar. Had the potato salad and that was okay. The rolls are your average mass produced bleh. The salad bar wasn't anything special and nothing to complain about. The chicken was small for a half chicken. I actually questioned if my chicken was done cooking as it was rather tough. The other chicken was ordered, and I got to sample it. It was dry and overcooked. We both got our chicken at the same time as they were out at the time we were in line. Weird to have such a difference. The chicken could have used more seasoning. Slightly seasoned? The potatoes were okay. No complaints. The gravy had a strong chicken flavor and while I had no issue the other member of the party didn't care for it so much. They also wished they had more gravy to offset the chicken's dryness. The coconut cream pie was less of a custard and more of a solid mass and rather bland. It was tossed without being finished. Overall, I would not make a special trip to come back. You can make better chicken than what we had, however, this is a nice and clean place, so if we're in the area and need a meal, I would consider just for that and the fact the prices are reasonable. Then while standing in line, you can watch the wall of chickens work their way through the carousel. For $12 you get 1/2 chicken, a potato side which I got the homemade filling, and the salad bar. The salad bar is a large selection of fresh vegetables, a variety of dressings, and a choice of iceberg lettuce or a spring mix. The food is fresh, home cooked flavor on a budget. To begin with, if I were just reviewing dinner this would be lower, but Kaufman's has fantastic mini-golf and ice cream and those aspects make this a great place to take families. The facilities are very well maintained and the staff is friendly and helpful. Kauffman's is a cafeteria style restaurant. It's not BBQ no matter what they advertise as there isn't a Pit Master and their aren't any of the traditional BBQ sauces or side dishes prepared in the style of a BBQ restaurant. It is locally famous for their rotisserie chicken and deservedly so. It is excellent. However, the rest of the menu is less successful. Most of the other dishes are not freshly made but are from frozen and/or prepackaged items. The hamburgers my niece and nephew ordered were awful and were clearly from frozen grocery store bought patties on store bought buns (and not good ones either). The salad bar is ok, but is rather basic without exceptional quality in the produce. Overall I would skip dinner here but come for the mini-golf and the ice cream. First off, we stopped here only because of the supposed mask sign on the door. There is a decent salad and bread bar that comes with dinners. It's not one of those 100 item ones like in Lancaster, but everything was fresh and clean. The chicken was as others have said. Decent. Not overly seasoned. And the white meat was moist. The burgers were decent, Not a $10 bar burger, but much better then a fast-food chain and only $4.25 Fries were ok. We visited this restaurant two times in one week because it was that great!! The workers recognized us our second visit and thanked us for returning. Nothing beats Kauffman's BBQ! After hearing so much about their amazing chicken it became a quest to seek them out; it was well worth the adventure. When you walk in you're greeted with view of the rotisseries busily turning chicken after chicken. The menu is large and offers more than just chicken (sandwiches, steak, seafood). I ordered the 1/2 chicken meal with a baked potato. The chicken was roasted to perfection and has amazing flavor and matching juiciness. The 1/2 order is large enough to share, or enough to tackle alone if you're up for it. The potato was tasty and paired well with the chicken. The kids portions are favorable and were more than enough for our children. The pricing is fair and our family of four was fed for around $30+ which adds more to the value of our experience. Was in town with a friend of mine and we Yelped this location out while on the road. Nice place, heard it was the best place to get chicken in town so we figured we would give it shot. They have two options here, take out or dine in and its setup as follows; Once you walk in there is a dining area through a small corridor in the back right(if you entered via main entrance/parking lot) and before the corridor there is a window booth for take out orders to the left of said corridor. IF you go in and there is a line make sure you ask if its for the dine in or take-out line because the two get easily intermingled and you will find yourself waiting on the wrong line. The staff is very friendly(as is everyone around here!) and the food was good, was it the best rotisserie chicken I have ever had? No, but it was still very good nonetheless! The sides were fresh and delicious, I had the half chicken with coleslaw, frickles and a birch beer, which is a must-drink according to the locals. The chicken was fresh and I believe raised locally, which made for a great meal. This place is great for families and groups, the prices are very good and there is plenty to do for children/families such as the miniature golf, ice cream shoppe and pond near the outdoor eating area. Their "disappointment" is due to improper dining preparation. Kaufman's has been making BBQ chicken since 1956, often for huge gatherings, long before anyone in the Pennsylvania Dutch Country ever heard of rubs and BBQ Joints. Though, tomato sauce certainly was done, it was mostly at home, or on a picnic, with Kraft or Wishbone or other bottled-type, or now, some of the "joints"(Recently, I use Sweet Baby Ray's, straight, myself - much like I used to "doctor-up". Now, I don't have to - yay.). Just last week, made some excellent chicken BBQ, in my oven - very good. Still, tomato BBQ rarely seen, at our many, many roadside BBQ's. No "joints" at all, prior to about 20 years ago, here. This is PA BBQ chicken, at it's finest(Most often with a vinegar/butter baste, or even spray from a garden-type, pump-up sprayer!). The World's Largest Sertoma Chicken BBQ, Long's park, Lancaster, does this beautifully, every spring. No, there is no tomato sauce, no hot spices(OK, some black pepper.), and, yes, at Kaufman's Restaurant, it is done on rotisserie machines, indoors, and is a bit different, yet. Still, if you hire them for your event, may be done on an outdoor grill. But, BBQ it is - and it's excellent. The potato filling, with gravy is excellent, the salad bar, small, but fresh and good. The "place", is very nice, very "farm-dutchey", very, very good. Many other things on the menu, but the chicken is where it's at... Hint: When you go to someplace "different", be prepared for...... different! Don't tell yourself you know exactly what you are going to get because you will too often be disappointed, which is sad. 28 miles from my house and 58 minutes of driving. You wait in line, like in a cafeteria, and they make you feel rushed as you go through. 5. Sides are expensive and taste like they were purchased from a grocery store or a food service company. 6. If you want to eat a lot of bland food, this is the place for you. 7. I could be wrong, but most of their food doesn't taste homemade. 8. Salad bar is uninspiring. 9. Place was busy but I assume that's only because there isn't a lot of competition in the vicinity. 10. I honestly don't understand the hype. I can get the same type of food at just about any diner in Central, PA. 11. They get points for the yam sticks which are like motzarella sticks, but filled with puréed yam instead; a little on the sweet side for me, but my Dad liked them. Found this place on google maps and decided to try it. I went with the chicken since this is what everyone raves about. It's rotisserie chicken, no more, no less. I can cook the same at home or get it from a local grocery store just as good. It was alright, though the white meat portion was a little dry. I got the meal as take out and asked if butter had been included for the potato and roll. I was told it was in the bag. It wasn't. So I ate the baked potato, which was cooked correctly dry. The roll, right out of a bag from the grocery store. The slaw was good but again, you could get from any grocery store. The setting in nice, well maintained building, next to a pond, putt putt golf course and a working farm. Quite a pastoral setting but the meal itself is nothing I go driving out of my way to purchase. It turned out to be pretty nice. it sits on the edge of a family farm, where there is a restaurant, a take out ice cream section, and 18 hole mini-golf course and a pavilion rental area. There was a large lake closeby, as well as a huge chicken statue. We ordered the BBQ Chicken platter for aprx 7.00, one piece of chicken, mashed potatoes or fries, cole slaw or pepper cabbage, and a roll. Since it was a hot summer day, we got some ice cream, a three scoop dish of mint chocolate chip for 3.50. I'd stop back if I was in the area. read more

This is a hidden gem in Berks County. Tucked off 1-78 this great chicken place is worth the 15 minute drive from the Interstate.
