    BBQ pulled pork sandwich
    Krys G.

We had dinner here while visiting Vancouver. We ordered a few happy hour drinks to start things off. We all ordered something different but mine was the winner. I ordered the bbq pulled pork sandwich. It came with a good amount of bbq pulled pork and tasty coleslaw. Chips were on the side. The Chili was presented nice but it was a very small portion. The bbq pork plate with sides was also a very small portion. The bbq pork Mac & Cheese had a very bland and way to creamy noodle thing going on. Not that great. The meat part was good. Service was okay. No one really went out of their way to check on us. Overall the bbq was very tasty at this restaurant. I would recommend getting the bbq pulled pork sandwich. Most bang for your buck.

They do two things really really well - their brisket is out of the world tender yet just crispy on the outside (ask for the fatty cut) and their fries are really well seasoned. You can sit outside, friendly service as well. I mean they have other good stuff too - Mac and cheese my kid ordered is good and the chili is decent. I would come back for the brisket though.

Wow this place never disappoints, I've had there pulled pork and brisket sandwich on multiple occasions with there perfectly seasoned fries. The prices are unreal for the amount of food you get compared to any where else.

Ended up eating there food twice in 2 days. First was at the restaurant and second was a catered event. At the restaurant I got a blackened chicken sandwich. The sandwich was so juicy and cooked perfectly. The side of potato salad was rich and delicious. The staff was awesome and ambiance was great. For the catered event they had brisket, macaroni and coleslaw. Even for catered it was fantastic. I'm not a big BBQ guy but it was excellent both times and everyone at the event loved the food. Would recommend.

We don't go for BBQ often, if ever, but with the States closed, we decided to try Smoke and Bones while we were out and about in North Van. It's located across from Hearthstone Brewery. We dropped in for a late Sunday lunch (around 2:45pm) and there were a couple other booths/tables occupied. They proudly have on display all their trophies won in BBQ competitions. Service is a bit strange (the one waiter working the front took off his mask to hear us better) and sketchy (we saw none of the kitchen staff wearing masks). The menu is split into share plates, non-meat, soup & salad, BBQ family style, BBQ supper, BBQ sammiches and mains. - 2 meat combo ($29.99) - for our two meats, we picked the beef brisket and sausage. For our sides, we opted for the pitt beans, house rub fries and cornbread. For $30, you sure don't get much of anything. Beef brisket was dry and desperately called out for the BBQ sauce (which was at least good). The sausage was also a touch dry (it needed some fat). The fries came out cold. The cornbread was terrible; it instantly crumbled when we tried to split it in half. Only the pitt beans were passable. - Dukes rib mac n cheese ($15.99) - pasta in a creamy white sauce with mozza mix, garlic butter crumb crust and topped with boneless pork ribs. Again, the tiniest amount of meat on top. This was one of the saddest iterations of mac and cheese that I've had in my lifetime. Bland. All you taste is cream sauce. The cheese isn't even mixed in. Pricey, dry and utterly bland dishes. Don't waste your money at S&B.

    Dry, overpriced, inedible ribs

Pre-covid I really enjoyed the food, especially the ribs. They use to offer full size ribs, but now it's only 1/2 for $29.00. For $39.00 you get 2 types of meat. I added chicken for $10.00 more. My friend orders ribs and brisket. I recommend this restaurant to him. Both came out fairly quickly. Everything arrived cold except the coleslaw which was room temperature. I had the fries replaced, because it should be against the law to serve cold fries. The ribs. It looked tasted 2-3 days old, definitely not fresh or made that day. It was such a small portion, about the size of my female hand and 4" across. Completely dry and the only flavour you got was the bbq sauce. (see my picture, dry, dry, dry) The chicken (1 leg and 1 thigh for $10 extra) was rubbery and dry. Coleslaw had absolutely no flavour, pickles were jared, corn bread dry and just horrible. I ate a few bites and left 90%. In my opinion it was completely inedible. I smoke meat all the time, as I have an xxl Big Green Egg. I just smoked 20 lbs of brisket, pork loin, chicken and 4 slabs of ribs on fathers day. I know what fresh bbq meat should look and taste like. This was pure garbage. Ribs you buy pre-made/cooked, pre-packed at Safeway for $12 full rack, taste better than this. I told our waitress and she said sorry. She mentioned that other customers have complained about the same things. During our conversation she mentioned that it's not that busy. It was a Friday night and only a handful of tables were occupied. The owner/manager came to apologize, but all he had were excuses. He said that the ribs were fresh. He lied, flat out lied! See picture. I know what fresh ribs look and taste like, it was an insult to try to convince me otherwise. He also said this place always busy. We paid our bill in full and tipped our waitress the standard 15%. $111.00 for 2 meals and a glass of wine we should have walked away from when served. Looking back at it I really regret that we didn't. My company was amazing, we had such a great time talking, and we liked our waitress. That's why we tipped her 15 % because the food was not her fault. We didn't like the food and we complained 2x. I repeatedly apologized to my friend because I recommend it. I was embarrassed, not only for my recommendation but for the restaurant itself. I will not be coming here ever again, not even to rib fest. The portions are a lot smaller than before, and the quality is non-existent. Nothing absolutely NOTHING was up to any standard of quality. Inedible! Such a shame the owner has no integrity and defends his poor-quality food.

Half slab ribs with Pitt beans and fries

Super yummy ribs and brisket here. I wish they bring back the old menu with the 2 meat-combo for $25. At least that allows to sample some meat if you are dining alone or with people who do not wish to share or do not eat meat. The only platter now is $70+ and meant for 2-3 persons. I like the corn muffin too. Not overly sweet and with a lovely crisp top. The pitt beans are on the sweet side, not too bad. Creamy coleslaw is not the wet and creamy type, it is on the dry side which is good as it does not soak through the liner. Fries are surprisingly good ~ crispy. Potato salad is meh though. The brisket is a big portion and very fatty but so delicious. Very tender and great with the house BBQ sauce. The ribs is also fall off the bone tender. Both meat are not served hot or warm, instead they are room temperature. The smoked jalapeno and chicken corn chowder is not bad, but the half portion is very tiny. For $6, it is not worth ordering. The food is good, service is nothing special. Just come for the food and do not expect anything more.

Delicious BBQ place in the North Shore. Parking is available on the side street next to the building. The venue consists of a large patio area (there's even a couch section) as well as bar style seating inside. Nice and classy. Staff were friendly. The best deal seems to be the 2 meat combo ($27). I got to try the ribs, beef brisket, and pulled pork. Out of these, I would recommend the ribs and brisket. The ribs are full of flavour and nice and smoky. The brisket is tender though a wee bit dry. The pulled pork was definitely more on the dry side, though the sauce really helped. For sides, I had the coleslaw and beans. Both are quite good. The combo also comes with a corn bread cupcake, which is nice and sweet. Overall portion size is very decent. I left satisfied. I'll be back at some point. Recommended.

Beef Brisket (cut with the grain)
    James S.

Pretty good overall. Texas style smoked brisket was good - it could have been great, if only it were cut against the grain :( . Smoked ribs were also good, although a bit overdone - they fell off the bone and were quite dry around the edges. Atomic poppers and fries were very good. Pickles are not house-made, they seemed like store bought hamburger dill chips to me, and this would be OK if the pickles were included with meals or plates: they are not, they count as a side. BBQ sauce is on the vinegar-y side as opposed to the sweeter side.

I just had an Original Gimbap and a Vege Gimbap for myself. It was a hot summer's day so I just didn't feel like ordering hot food. Everyone else ordered hot food though. My daughter has been getting into Tonkatsu at Japanese restaurants for awhile now. So when she saw Chicken Katsu on the menu here, she decided to give that a try. It was just OK for her. No comparison to any of the pork Tonkatsu dishes that she's been having at Japanese restaurants. She still ate it all up though and it was a huge portion. Other dishes on the table included Seafood Noodles, Pork Kimchi Stew, Soft Tofu Stew, Fried Chicken, and Kimchi Fried Rice. My one gripe would be that they took a super long time bringing out my daughter's Chicken Katsu. Everyone else had their food for quite awhile but she sat waiting and waiting for her Chicken Katsu. When we asked about it, they said it was coming soon. But that's what they always say when you ask about something that's taking a long time to come, right? Wondering if they actually completely forgot about it and then put in a rush order at the kitchen when we brought it up.

It's over fire on a hotplate/pan with the meat all around and kimchi in the middle. Perfect with rice or on it's on. The Japchae had plenty of beef and veggies. The potato noodles weren't overcooked and was a great consistency. The seafood tofu soup was favorful with clams and mussels. The raw beef was too frozen and needed to sit out longer. However, the flavor was still good, but I don't know if I'd order it again. The service was excellent and attentive.

Also...finally got around to trying their pie this time! Bought 2 slices of Lemon Meringue pie to bring home for an afternoon snack. Whoa...the meringue is sooo high! They left the box lids open cuz the meringue is really way too tall to be able to close the box. This pie was sooo good. Some of the best Lemon Meringue pie that I've ever had. Reminiscent of the Lemon Meringue pie that we used to get many many years ago from Saskatchewan Pavilion Restaurant that used to be at Park Royal Shopping Centre. Somewhat taken aback to look at my bill and realize that they charged me $2.25 for a hot water and lemon. Should have seen that sooner. My bad for not checking the bill sooner. Don't know there's anything much I could have done about it if I had seen it sooner. I think it's quite ridiculous though. I do see hot water with honey and lemon on their menu for $2.25 but I never asked for honey. I just asked for hot water with lemon. If I'd known they were gonna charge me for that, I'd have stuck with bottled water they put on our table for free. Still love this place regardless of the $2.25 charge for hot water and lemon. Will make sure not to order that again next time. I was ever so sad to hear recently that Tomahawk restaurant is for sale. This place has been a favorite of ours for a number of years now. There have been a lot of restaurant closures in the last few years but this one really hits me hard cuz of the sentimental attachment to it. Guess I'll just pray that it takes a long long time for anyone to buy it!

They also have hot soy milk for drinks. Their deep fried chinese donut has got to be the best I've ever had in my life. With the price of a pair of fried donut being over $6 these days, I get my fix here. Other things are standard, good but not outstanding. I really like having soy milk to drink instead of water. $18.88 is getting a little steep for a limited choice buffet with not too many meat choices. The crab/clam are a nice addition but if there are days without it, it wouldn't be worth. A Gastronomic Awakening in Chinatown! You don't truly know…read moreuntil you go--and now that I've been, I'm haunted. As I write this, I am literally still dreaming of the Hong Kong Style BBQ Pork. It didn't just "eat" well; it dissolved into a decadent, sweet, fatty puddle of pure bliss. Walking in, the vibe is quintessential Chinatown: a bustling counter, a glass case showcasing glistening roasted treasures, and a seating area that trades fancy decor for pure, functional authenticity. We were clearly out of our element, probably looking like deer in headlights, but the staff met our confusion with warm smiles. Then came Bobby--the absolute heart and soul of this place. We walked in expecting the standard American-Chinese routine, but Bobby whisked us away to a cozy table and treated us like family. He started us off with a fragrant jasmine tea so naturally sweet and floral it didn't need a grain of sugar--perfect for a biting winter night. While we flirted with the Happy Hour menu, Bobby took the reins. You don't say no to a man with that much charisma and passion! On his expert recommendation, we pivoted to the Two-Meat Combo (BBQ Pork + Soy Chicken) with a side of their famous Roast Duck. The food arrived in a lightning-fast 10 minutes, but the real treat was Bobby's play-by-play on how each dish was prepared. You can taste the pride in every bite. The balance was masterclass: a symphony of sweet, salty, and umami. The meats were succulent, the skins were shattery-crisp, and the glazes were perfectly sticky. The undisputed heavyweight champion, however, was that Hong Kong BBQ Pork. Imagine the best "burnt ends" of your life, drenched in a caramelized, mouth-watering sauce that demands your full attention. We left Chinatown BBQ feeling more than just sated--we felt enlightened. If you're looking for a "one in a million" meal, let Bobby order for you. You won't regret it.
